    The worst part is during the whole time that the truck was stuck at the crossing, nobody thought to call the number on the blue sign at the crossing to warn the railway. It literally would've cost nothing and would've probably prevented this entire accident.

      There's a lot of factors to consider before judging who did what wrong.. How long was the oversize load blocking the tracks? Had a call been put in to U.P. or 911 prior to the collision? The crash occurred near sunset while the train was going westbound. Was the engineer's vision impaired by the setting sun? Was the route pre-approved and permitted by DOT for O.S. loads? Had other wind turbine segments successfully traversed that RR crossing? Etcetera.

    I can tell you right now from what I have read this truck was stuck for 45 minutes on the tracks. That is more than enough time to stop that train from crashing into it if they would have contacted the railroad right away. This accident was totally preventable.

      agreed, but they should have gone one step further. A load that size should have coordinated with the railroad before even attempting to cross. Even if the load did not become stuck it is so long that the amount of time required to safely clear the crossing could put it in danger of being hit by a fast moving freight. The track speed limit in that area is 70 mph! Had they contacted the RR in advance they could have halted rail traffic until the truck was safely clear of the crossing. Or the RR could have advised them to wait to cross because a fast moving freight was already in the area.

    It's an oversized load that requires permits for movement. Who issued the permit to use that road and crossing? There should have been front and rear guard vehicles with dimensions noted. Even ground clearance. Something is not adding up. There should also have been state police escorts for such a large load. Someone cut corners and people died.

    The truck driver could have been ignorant of how to solve this problem. Thats why an escort is required. The escorts are supposed to be specialists not just for show. They should have known to immediately call the railroad. But "Just call the number on the blue sign". Not everyone knows there are blue signs with numbers to call. It is disappointing but not surprising to see a driver this dense. I would have called 9 1 1 first. Then look up a # for the railroad & call them. Then call dispatch to contact the emergency contact. After that, as a driver you do everything you can to get out of being high centered. But looks as if he just called it a day upon veing stuck. Thats a criminal level of neglect. The escorts are liable as well for doing nothing. I am tired of seeing railroaders pay the price for ignorance & neglect.

    • @rjb5847
      @rjb5847 9 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      Always call the blue number first. Then 911. Time is of the essence & 911 dispatcher would call the same number as on the blue sign. That could take 30 seconds or more, that might be the difference between accident & stopping in time, depending on where the nearest train is.

    It's mind-boggling how if the truck was stuck, that contacting the railroad via the emergency number posted at the crossing, and what I would think would be in the hands of the escort vehicles or local police, wasn't the first course of action. @@TheGospelQuartetParadise That is true , now the question is was the truck on the prescribed route? A few years ago an oversize load got struck by a train and come to find out they were off their prescribed route. Even if they were on the correct route it is ultimately the responsibility of the truck driver to determine if they can clear any obstacle. They have escort drivers and they are also responsible, but the truck driver is always in charge of the whole convoy. If there was any doubt as to whether they could clear or not the railroad should have been contacted ahead of time and advised of the situation. They will stop rail traffic in those scenarios until the truck clears the crossing, or if they get stuck then obviously they hold rail traffic until they can get unstuck.

      They have to do a full investigation. There's a lot more to sift through. You have to download the engines, pull radio call logs, dispatcher messages, and calls to the railroads public safety center. You have to review any and all possible footage of the incident from every possible angle. You have to basically reconstruct it. This is done because the NTSB will not only make a report, but the report also lists recommendations for how to prevent the accident from happening again. It's a thorough process and it's required. There could be information you don't know about such as a phone call to the 1800 number on the crossing. The train crew could have been notified and not done anything. They could have been notified and been trying to slow down already (doubtful since they hit at 68 ) these are all things that have to be looked into. It's really not always cut and dry.

      One faucet of this is the time it takes to go from a stop clear of the track until the entire vehicle is clear on the other side. Minimum warning time from activation of lights gates etc. until the lead equipment ( locomotive usually) reaches the CrossFit, is about 20 seconds.I don't think that huge load in this accident would make it across even if it wasn't hung up.

    Americans have little idea of how to build a Rail Crossing. In many countries they are called LEVEL Crossings for a reason.

    • @danlowe8684
      @danlowe8684 9 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +2

      The rail lines were placed long before the roadways were built. Generally, railroads build above the level of the highest historical floods in the area. They also keep their grades nearly flat. So, as the towns built road crossings, the horses and buggies had no problem crossing the tracks with the change in elevation. As transportation has evolved and cities built up around crossings, problems have arisen. Problems that are over a century in the making.

    Union Pacific is 100% to blame. That crossing is at an unacceptable grade and no warning signs whatsoever to indicate low clearance. Also, Union Pacific is liable because that train was going entirely too fast. The track speed may have been 70mph, but that speed limit is set by Union Pacific and that qualifies for negligent homicide. This is what happens when you let big corporations make their own rules for profit.

      That is absolutely not true, the railroad was there first, the highway has to be engineered or not engineered to permit certain vehicles to cross, and the track speed is approved by Federal FRA inspectors for a particular class of track. 70mph is the standard speed of mainline freight in the entire country and witwh good reason. The trucking industry is allowed to get away with murder to avoid having to deal with the same kind of tight inspection regulations the FRA imposes on the railroads, and in this case, they probably will.

      Correct me if I'm wrong however when hauling oversized loads requiring special route permits, isn't the company required to submit a safety plan and route, that can accommodate the load?

    I love how news stations do their investigating from the news room. witnesses said the truck had been on the track for 45 minuets and the RR said it had received no calls.
