Well put. I was a fan of Peter's journalism work, before I discovered his personal history with Frank and the Williams team, before, during and after the crash. I think it says a lot about both of them, that their working relationship and personal friendship lasted for decades.

This right here. I've learned more from this tribute than most of the reading I've done about the man. Your personal experience and your remarkable attention to detail will be remembered and enjoyed for years to come. Thank you for doing this in such a personal and loving way. And thank you for remembering the accident as a Frank Williams event, not a Peter Windsor one.

I am.too young to really appreciate Sir Frank Williams and his contributions to F1 so that you Peter for that Glimpse.
However, thanks to that big smile he had on his face when Sir. Lewis Hamilton took him around the track a few years back made me identify with him for that moment...he has contributed immensely to the sport but it also showed he as big a fan as any of the Sport.
    Good Innings Sir Frank....Good Innnings.

Thank you so much Peter for a tribute to Frank which embodies so much of him. No nonsense, self-deprecatingly humourous and enthusiastic.
I got in to motor racing during 1981 and I've been a big Williams fan ever since. Two of my earliest and most treasured motor racing publications are your Autocar 1982 F1 season review and Doug Nye's Racers: The Inside Story Of Williams Grand Prix Engineering.

Frank Williams was certainly dedicated. Here's a little story of his dedication and my personal memory of Frank. Cosworth had a social club and from time to time they organised a "do". So , they planned a dance in the early 80’s at the location of Saint James Mill Road on a Saturday night and the club sent out invitations to different personalities, one of which was Frank Williams. None of the Cosworth management knew anything about this arrangement and of course Frank and his wife turned up on a Saturday night to join the workers in the social club dance. When I saw Frank coming through the door and absolutely no management being present, I immediately got on the telephone and call my boss Dick Scammell to tell him what had happened. Poor Dick had to down tools at 9:00 PM Saturday night, jump in his car and 30 min later arrived with his wife to accompany Frank and spouse for the evening. Well, we had a good time, and everybody finished off the evening in a nicely organised manner. I am sure that the reason Frank accepted the invitation was simply to be in the good books of anybody who was going to be remotely involved with the rebuilding of his engines and that might give Williams a small advantage over the other Cosworth DFV customers. It’s nice to think about these times and Frank dedication to his team.

As a teenager I would see Frank and his cars at various race meetings in the UK. In 76 I went to the Monaco GP - practise day evening I strolled around the paddock (much more relaxed in those days) and saw Frank in earnest conversation and had a thought "would like to work for his team one day". !980 I spent 6 months as a student intern - not normal practise then ( pestered Patrick Head). Then joined full time 1982 - 1987 in the composites workshop. Frank knew all of us and always came and and borrowed my Times - dropping back in my toolbox by lunchtime. I know all the sides of Frank . Also knew our nicknames given to us by - can't remember his name for now. For my time at Williams GP Engineering he always motivated us well and I always felt very proud to be part of WGPE. When an urgent job had been done he always found out exactly who had done what so they could be suitably rewarded. My time there set me up for a varied and interesting career in motorsport and composites. As Peter said a cliche but Frank had a good innings especially for someone with his condition. Oh yes I ran in some of the same half marathons as Frank - he would be top 10 , me at least top 200.

I was a Williams fan since I was 8 years old and his passing is very much an end of an era. I loved the independent nature of the team and their own quirky nature of doing things the 'Williams Way', though that caught up with them in the end. Frank's relationship with drivers was an interesting one, as the team often realised how good some of then were only in retrospect... He tried to palm Keke off to another team in his Championship year, which sounded just as ridiculous then as it does now, but that was Williams for you. Thanks for the memories Frank, there were many.

We live a short drive from Watkins Glen and were there in the 1970's. When F1 stopped racing at the Glen, we would venture to Montreal for the race. It was a different time and a completely different atmosphere at the races. Much more open and accessible around the paddock. Because of this, fans were able to meet many of the personalities in F1. Although we never met Frank, we always would hang around the garage at Watkins Glen on Saturday night and saw him many times. It was great fun and very exciting.

It was only a few weeks ago I learned that Peter was with Sir Frank on the day of his accident. Both men are strong as steel to come away from that and carry on. I watch F1 races from the early 2000’s on VHS, and listen to Peter do his commentary as well as seeing Sir Frank scowl at his team for whatever cock-up occurred. Williams was a great F1 team. As good as there ever was...
