If you have psoriasis, do not use a derma roller. Those little spikes can set off psoriasis badly. Amy, this channel feels like it was always supposed to be yours and Mat just warmed it up for you. I started as a Game Theorist fan ages ago but Style Theory is my fave these days. Great work!
As a woman who has PCOS, I have the opposite problem: hirsutism. Would love to have Style Theory do an analysis of which method out there is most worth it for getting rid of facial hair (e.g. shaving, epilator, waxing, laser, tweezing, etc)
I also have pcos, and unfortunately have both 😭 I often wish i could take all of the hair off my face and just put it on my head. It's like PCOS is just choosing to mess with me by giving me so much hair in all the places i don't want it, and taking hair away from me in the one place i do want it! Endlessly irritating.
If you’re prone to ingrown hairs like myself then waxing/plucking/epilating are all out. They increase my acne. Electrolysis was expensive and too slow for progress. I’ve tried a prescription cream that was supposed to limit hair growth but it caused a lot of skin irritation and didn’t seem effective. Shaving requires finding the right products and shaving cream. I use an oil to prep my skin and make the hair soft, then a men’s foaming shaving gel with a straight razor and I replace the blade often which helps to prevent ingrowns, irritation, and cuts (once you get the technique down). Using benzoyl peroxide also helps with the acne side of it to eliminate bacteria that causes spots (and crops up more because of shaving irritation). The ultimate solution is going to be laser. If you’re pale with darker hair, it’s even more effective. It’s expensive though.
@@agoodwasteoftime Go to a dermatologist, they will prescribe you anti-androgens to stop both conditions from progressing and can offer many solutions for permanent hair removal and regrowth or transplants.

My husband has been using Rogaine for almost 40 years (since he was 30), and he hasn't lost more hair, but even at the beginning, his Dr said it wouldn't grow hair in the areas which were bald, an that has been the case, for him. I began taking a biotin supplement for my nails, but it has also improved my hair texture as well; it's softer and has more healthy curls and less frizz. However, I also do not use any heated devices on my hair, and I most wash it with conditioner, using shampoo 2-4 times per month.
There's a 2015 study that suggests that rosemary oil could be as effective as minoxidil. I've started spraying rosemary water onto my scalp and then massaging it in once a day. I've only been doing this for a week so its too soon to see results, and rosemary water is a weaker concentration than rosemary oil. I would have loved to have seen the theorists testing out rosemary oil/water since its so cheap and accessible!
I feel like, as a scientist, they ignored yet another variable with Steph. She probably lost a lot of hair when pregnant and is just still recovering it. So they were fighting genetics that she wasn’t.
Oh my gosh YES! I am so excited for more of this series. My hair is very important to me, but I've always been to skeptical of the big claims some hair products make. Thank you!
That's the thing my barber explained very clearly. These products can help you keep your hairs longer, make them healthier, but they will never make hair appear where they are not. I have patches in my beard, thankfully symmetrical, and I am my father's son, so according to him, I should get a full beard in my 40's, just like he did. Less than a decade away! Now, I just have to trim and take care of what I have.
i’d be very interested in seeing a diverse range of hair textures in upcoming videos! especially because a lot of cultures celebrate their own hair growth traditions that influence the western beauty world, i think that it could be really cool to have more perspectives.
I relate to Dan so much when it comes to facial hair. I was the opposite for a while, and I felt like having a clean-shaven face was what I felt more confident with. But then I tried growing out my facial hair, and I felt so much more confident!

I started losing my hair in my early 20s. I briefly considered Rogaine, but I didn't want to be a customer for life. So, I decided to let nature take its course and ultimately gave in entirely and started shaving my head. Until now, part of me has always wondered if I made the right call, but this video has made me feel a lot better about my decision. Having said that, I'm really curious to see if the vitamins work. Fortunately, I've never had the same issue with my beard. That's always grown a bit too well.
Same for me. In 2021 in my last apartment I was in my bathroom which had several mirrors and saw a giant bald spot so I shaved my head every week since then and have gotten more compliments now that I went bald
Thank you for all talking so openly about your hair loss. As a PCOS having person I deal with male pattern hair loss too, and it helps destigmatize hair loss when others talk about it!
Do you brush your hair often? If not that’s probably why. Your hair naturally falls out when you brush. If you don’t, all the “casual” hair loss will only happen when you shower and it’ll seem more dramatic then.
@@CallieRosesif your a girl or just with long hair you probably don’t wash your hair every day. Your head drops hair every day in small amounts, when you shower the small amounts are added up over a couple days and falls out. It’s mostly normal

I wonder if Stephanie’s results were related to why she was having thinning hair. Even though it’s been a few years since pregnancy for her I wonder if her hair loss was connected to that. I had the same issues after having my babies and vitamins with biotin helped it a lot. Hair thinning and loss have so many causes so one persons fix isn’t someone else’s. Also I’d love to see you test out brushing when wet vs dry. Using a microfibre towel or T-shirt for drying. Also only washing once or twice a week. All those things are supposed to help with hair strength and growth but do they? I’m also curious about that biotin hair mask and hair oiling for growth! Awesome video!! Excited to see more about this!

I wonder if African American hair is actually fundamentaly different from other hair. I was turned down at a salon because they said they "Dont know how to do black hair " 1. I have native American and Caribbean hair. My hair type doesn't curl, lock and fluff the same way some black American hair does. I am incapable of growing an Afro for lack of a better explanation. My hair falls down wavey one its own no tight curls. I want to know if that was racism or fact. Could you please do a theory on is Black Hair different/more difficult to handle then other hair types.
It's definitely different but the idea that it's more difficult? To a professional it shouldn't be, a lot of beauty schools don't teach beauticians how to do ethnic or more textured hair? Hence its "difficulty" in salons.
Most beauty schools don't teach how to work with African blood hair. I'm not black but my hair is very similar to African folks hair. That's why I don't trust any hair stylist or hair expert unless they know how to handle ALL types of hair.
There are plenty of great curly TH-camrs you can learn some things about curly/wavy hair from, such as the different types of curls there are, and also how certain shampoos, conditioners and stylers aren’t really great for your hair vs ones that can be! There’s also a lot of other factors that can cause issues with hair such as the type of water we use daily (hard water vs soft), how often we wash our hair vs how often we should, how much product we put into our hair daily, and of course our own stress levels and just our bodies and how they react to things as well.
1. It's definitely different. Growth pattern, texture, moisture - almost in every way. 2. If they don't know how to do it, you don't want them. It could be dangerous. If you need relaxers from tight/locked hair it could be dangerous if they don't know how to do it. 3. You might have a little black that is causing it to have properties of black hair, though not fully. 4. Get a stylist that knows both/all hairs to give you a unique treatment. 5. Getting hair done is intimate in that you're trusting them to treat you, be professional, and do it how you like it. There's plenty mixed-race stylists that know exactly how to treat it from multiple angles. 4. Amy's hair sounds similar to yours. She says she has to straighten it a lot to get it that way.
I am currently going to barber school and from what I’ve learned about hair types is that there are different porosity levels for different types of hair. For instance, individuals with fine or thin hair have a low porosity level, therefore will not require as much product as compared to someone with corse or very thick hair. Although hair is technically considered dead, they still react with temperature changes. When exposed to hot water, the hair follicles actually open up just like pours will when exposed to heat and will close when temperatures drop. As far as damaged or frizzy hair, you can actually add oils and treat it at a shop with what’s called a hot oil treatment, which uses cholesterol to add nutrients to the hair and somewhat make it healthier. For beards, the only real way for it to grow is taking some sort of supplement to help with the process. Using a derma roller doesn’t really do anything for beard growth other than just helping with blood flow. That’s pretty much all I know as of right now, again I am still in school and still learning about hair. Hope this helps in some way.
is it just me, or did anyone else notice sudden massive hair shedding when in the shower before your hair started to thin? I also lost quite a bit of body hair. Unfortunately, my doctor never understood what the cause for this was. Anyways, this was a very interesting video and very brave of her for talking about hairloss which isn't a comfortable subject to talk about at all. Big thumbs up from me.
Now, admittedly this is advice from a professional stylist who has their own line of products. Their advice to seeing hair growth to keeping your hair healthy and look to reduce shedding itself. Their suggestion to doing this, is ensuring your hair stays hydrated so it doesn't become as brittle and be prone to breakage.
I appreciate this video also tackling beard growth! I'm hoping for my facial hair to grow more than it has been lately - I have a Halloween costume based on a character with a decently thick beard, and I want that for that extra attention to detail. Great video, Amy!
I'm so happy this episode was made. I requested something similar a while back on reddit because I've been struggling to grow my hair due to hormonal problems, and this episode made me cry happy tears because Amy's trying to find the answer to what works to grow hair and is continuing to look into it. I'm so happy. Thank you so much, Amy. The production of this video and its inevitable sequel mean so much to me.
Maybe also do one on the opposite side of this. Using Hair regrowth inhibitors. For those folks who would like to get as close to hairless body (chest, legs, arms, etc.)
I think Style Theory has grown enough as a community to recruit help from top fans to make bigger experiments. Specially in all this cases in which bigger numbers are important for the experiments
Amy, you need to find some volunteers for those who want to stop hair growth for those of us who have unwanted hair that refuses to take the hint that it needs to stop
I'm excited for the hair series. My hair is also thinning. Can you guys also do a curly/wavy pattern episode? Also it makes sense to me that it's a diet thing. Most nutrients our body needs is broken down through digestion and sent to where it needs to go. Topical never made sense to me when it comes to our natural body functions (like hair growth). For other things, I'd consult a professional like a Dr.
Yes! Hair is so much to style, grow thicker, grow longer, make follicles start producing hair again, there's so much to explore from supplements to oils to scalp care, I would love to see more on this topic
You have NO idea how much I needed this video! Female pattern baldness runs in my mom's side of the family and its been such a worry for me. I've never been able to find a clear answer on what to do about it. Glad that despite the products not really working, that the vitamins are also gonna get a test! Or at least I hope they do.
I actually use rosemary and mint conditioner/oil to stimulate hair growth because if I wash my hair multiple times within a week, it severely drys it out and makes it frizzy.
Always be careful with topical treatments like minoxidil around your pets as they can be dangerous for them. If you are a man or trans masculine or wanting to look more stereotypically masculine, topical testosterone gel can also help with hair growth but again, be careful with it if you have pets. I also had wavy hair as a kid but now I’ve dyed and bleached it constantly for years (that’s the only way I feel comfortable with it) and it went straight for a while until i retrained my curls. I also shave my hair off semi regularly and wear my hair in braids, ponytails or cornrows for health reasons. Some tips I’ve learned being chronically ill taking care of my hair: I’m only able to shower once a week if that, but baby powder is way better at absorbing oils than dry shampoo when your hair gets greasy having your hair tied back makes it less prone to knots, especially in braids, but not too tight of you can get tension alopecia and headaches brush from root to tip, especially if you have thick, curly or wavy hair never sleep with wet hair if you can help it or it tangles and can lead to breakage and you can even a cold Condition thoroughly after bleaching or dying to restore some of those oils back into your hair You should also skip conditioning if you hair gets greasy fast It’s okay if you can’t manage a curly girl hair routine
Never skip conditioner! If someone’s hair gets oily quickly there’s alot he or she can do, lots of do’s and don’ts to research. Like clean your hairbrush and other products/accessories regurarly, find out how often you should wash your hair (trial and error here), change bedsheets regularly…
Also it’s better to go slowly from the ends and then up when brushing your hair, like take little by little. In case there’s a knot, stop and then go again.
I was told by a hairstylist ones that The biotin molecule is too big to be topically absorbed that needs to be consumed for it to work but then I stopped taking biotin altogether because my primary told me that there was a study done showing that if you take biotin supplements and if you’re having an active heart attack the machine can give you a false negative so I started taking collagen instead
Minoxidil didn't seem to do much for me, but I now have a mixed finasteride and minoxidil lotion, and after a couple of months I'm already seeing new growth.
Basically, y'all tricked yourselves into taking care of your hair, which gave the majority of your results, with the most noticeable result showing the problem was agitated by a vitamin deficiency.
Something i found helpful for hair loss is to use ground up aloe vera to wash your hair instead of shampoo. grind up the aloe vera until it’s a paste, strain it through a filter so the particulates left behind by the aloe is separated from the liquid portion, and use the remaining aloe to wash your hair. Put it on your hair while showering, let it sit for a bit and not rinse it off immediately, scrub thoroughly to stimulate hair pores, then wash it off. It massively decreased my hair loss and made me grow more hair, although the effects for me kicked in about a month to a month and a half in. it definitely works, and if you have just some aloe in your front yard, use that. wash your hair 2-3 times a week to conserve aloe if you don’t have any, and the biggest part is not using shampoo so the hair and follicles maintain their own natural oil. everyone who tried it works, and it was recommended to me by an oriental doctor. Just another way to prevent hair loss.
As someone who is a frequent hair dyer, hair bleacher, and Covid hair-loss survivor....I can't wait to see what you guys find out! My hair used to be incredibly thick, but over the years its thinned out to half of what it was. If I can get it at least a LITTLE back to its previous glory, that would be amazing.
I have no idea how but this channel makes a video as soon as I need one I bought a treatment for loss literally 2 days ago [day of the video release] and it also had minoxidil it couldn't be more perfect also video on beard shaving when I started doing that, and leg/body shaving when I started doing that, and yes they were helpful. This is insane, my favourite theorist channel so far.
I was really hoping there would be some results with the beard patches. I've always wanted to grow a beard but there are just 2 big patches that just don't grow any hair for some reason! I hope as this experiment continues that the guys keep on board!

@@kimbrolyy well we don't know if she was taking vitamins because of a deficiency so either way I wonder about it
If you have psoriasis, do not use a derma roller. Those little spikes can set off psoriasis badly.
Amy, this channel feels like it was always supposed to be yours and Mat just warmed it up for you. I started as a Game Theorist fan ages ago but Style Theory is my fave these days. Great work!
Yea the channel being fairly new helped with the transition
@@KleioChronicleslasers aren't permanent either, which I only learned recently
@@agoodwasteoftime Go to a dermatologist, they will prescribe you anti-androgens to stop both conditions from progressing and can offer many solutions for permanent hair removal and regrowth or transplants.
Can we talk about how awesome and dedicated Amy is to this channel? Like she’s putting herself through actual pain daily and finding the science for us. Amy it’s okay to tap out 😅, girly pop it made you nauseous. We all understand. Also poor Tom, yall don’t have to do this to yourself 😢. But we love yall regardless ❤
I needed this! I’m growing my hair back after chemo now I know how to boost my hair growth
daily multi vits, if your body doesn't have all it needs it will pull from nonessentials, like hair.
Congrats on making it past chemo!
The thing is, massaging your scalp also increases the blood flow into the area, so it should have some effect anyways
i tried for like a year didn't work
lab muffin beauty science made a recent video about this you might wanna check out
@@tarynrila-smith392 very interesting, thanks for the recommendation
To that question right off the bat: Yes, every day since I was 23. Except it's reality, not a dream.
i’d be very interested in seeing a diverse range of hair textures in upcoming videos! especially because a lot of cultures celebrate their own hair growth traditions that influence the western beauty world, i think that it could be really cool to have more perspectives.
I relate to Dan so much when it comes to facial hair. I was the opposite for a while, and I felt like having a clean-shaven face was what I felt more confident with. But then I tried growing out my facial hair, and I felt so much more confident!
Round of applause for Amy and the team for doing this series, because I've lead a live of STRUGGLES when it comes to hair, and having you all trying to figure this out in the most scientific, empirical, non bulls**t way is a relief!!! ❤❤
Garvity Falls Style theory idea: *Sweater Parachute* -if you made a parachute using sweaters like mabel did in the fight against Bill, would it work? She was using handmade sweaters so would that make a difference?
As a girlie who is losing her hair, you ABSOLUTELY should get bloodwork done to confirm if you have nutritional deficiencies.
I also would recommend red light therapy - that was worked great for me
As a hairdresser, I was so excited when this video dropped😍🤩I really hope you guys cover the science of split ends, trims, & the different types of hair hydrators/moisturizers
Parasocial alarm going off in my head: Did you notice the intense amount of serotonin you received when you saw Stephanie?
Btw, I love Amy, I'm not saying anything bad about the new hosts. I just feel happy feels thanks to Stephanie and Matt.
My hair used to fall soo much in the shower 😭 I used olaplex and some other stuff and it slowed down a bit
Do you brush your hair often? If not that’s probably why. Your hair naturally falls out when you brush. If you don’t, all the “casual” hair loss will only happen when you shower and it’ll seem more dramatic then.
@@Imtrying_girl that makes a lot of sense! My hair is wavy/curly so I don’t brush often until I wet it! Thanks 👍
@@CallieRosesif your a girl or just with long hair you probably don’t wash your hair every day. Your head drops hair every day in small amounts, when you shower the small amounts are added up over a couple days and falls out. It’s mostly normal
If you have type 3 - 4 hair then it's best to brush your hair in the shower. Hair does naturally fall off
Derma stamps work. I used a derma stamp to help reduce a scar that was near my hairline and I accidentally caused more hair to grow. It doesn’t itch either
What’s Derma Stamp?
@@jackijax505
It’s kind of like the derma roller that was used in the video except instead of rolling it you literally stamp it on your scalp (gently tho)
Learned that the rollers puncture the skin at an angle… not desired I think
She's also older too. There are a ton of factors that could affect it.
The fact that Steph and mat are still with the makes me so happy
please please PLEASE do lash growth serums next 😭 i can never find an actual informative test i can trust. it would be awesome if you could cover ones without prostaglandins (the stuff in it that’s bad for you) ㅠㅠ
I'm pushing 50 soon, I have need needed a theory episode more! Not kidding, I was looking at Rogaine last week. Thanks y'all. ❤
Men's Rogaine has more active ingredient in it at the same price as women's
Drinking dozens of hair tonics sure does work fine for my buddy Arthur!

I adore Amy and everything she’s doing, but unironically calling the general public “chat” will always feel insane to me
Chat is he real?
I never liked my hair and just waited untell I had the face to pull off baldness. Shaved it all off. Saves money in terms of having to have it cut.
Wish you had more varying hair patterns in this video other than just straight and wavy
I was just saying the same thing.
That’s what hair thinning is? The hair has to go somewhere.
Nope, I have never experienced shedding. My hair just got thinner in some places.
Sounds like Alopecia. I have it too and most of my hair north oh the border is gone including eyelashes. All within 4 months.
Just want to say that you guys have been on such a roll with the videos!! Been so interested in all of them. Love the channel
8:07 my head got ichy thanks🫤
I appreciate this video also tackling beard growth! I'm hoping for my facial hair to grow more than it has been lately - I have a Halloween costume based on a character with a decently thick beard, and I want that for that extra attention to detail.

I think Style Theory has grown enough as a community to recruit help from top fans to make bigger experiments. Specially in all this cases in which bigger numbers are important for the experiments

Some tips I’ve learned being chronically ill taking care of my hair:
I’m only able to shower once a week if that, but baby powder is way better at absorbing oils than dry shampoo when your hair gets greasy
having your hair tied back makes it less prone to knots, especially in braids, but not too tight of you can get tension alopecia and headaches
brush from root to tip, especially if you have thick, curly or wavy hair
never sleep with wet hair if you can help it or it tangles and can lead to breakage and you can even a cold
Condition thoroughly after bleaching or dying to restore some of those oils back into your hair
You should also skip conditioning if you hair gets greasy fast
It’s okay if you can’t manage a curly girl hair routine
Never skip conditioner! If someone’s hair gets oily quickly there’s alot he or she can do, lots of do’s and don’ts to research. Like clean your hairbrush and other products/accessories regurarly, find out how often you should wash your hair (trial and error here), change bedsheets regularly…
Also it’s better to go slowly from the ends and then up when brushing your hair, like take little by little. In case there’s a knot, stop and then go again.
I had the opposite happen. My hair went a lot more curly either with age or with bleaching every few months.
Btw rogaine men and women have basically the same ingredients but the women one is much more expensive. So even if you are woman buy the men one
Minoxidil didn't seem to do much for me, but I now have a mixed finasteride and minoxidil lotion, and after a couple of months I'm already seeing new growth.
12:28 "It is truly an international incident!" It's no a Theorist episode if it doesn't have a cheesy joke in there somewhere.
Makes sense. You've got to fuel the growth, not just stimulate it
Basically, y'all tricked yourselves into taking care of your hair, which gave the majority of your results, with the most noticeable result showing the problem was agitated by a vitamin deficiency.
Gonna need a theory about how to get rid of dandruff in my hair one of these days
I was prescribed rogaine when I started losing my hair and it works pretty well.
Curious to see what style theory finds
As someone who still is trying to grow a beard at 20, since having a patch missing under my chin. Thank y'all for answering these questions.
