I have a mono-blue Commander deck that's focused all around gaining control of enemy stuff. It has Keiga, Entrancing Melody, Agent of Treachery, Vedalken Shackles, and Sower of Temptation in it. Some others from that decks that are really good: 1. Beguiler of Wills: Yeah, a 5 mana 1/1 is super rough, but tapping to be able to permanently gain control of creatures is really powerful if you can get her to stick. 2. Hypnotic Siren: While it's 7 mana cost to gain control of something is too much for constructed usually, it's flexibility with being able to come out early as a 1 mana 1/1 flyer plus the fact it leaves a creature behind in the controlled creature leaves the battlefield, it definitely has a lot of upside. 3. Blue Sun's Twilight: Basically just a strictly better version of Entrancing Melody because you get another copy of the creature if you spend 5 or more on X. 4. Mass Manipulation: I can definitely understand how this was too expensive to see a lot of use, since it's 6 mana to gain control of 1 permanent, 8 mana for 2, 10 mana for 3 and so on. Plus it's quad-blue mana cost. But it's certainly one of the most powerful mana dumps that doesn't just kill your opponent outright. 5. Invoke the Winds: For the same mana cost as Mind Control, making the effect a sorcery (so you can't gain your creature back with a disenchant), plus allowing it to grab non-creature artifacts, PLUS it untapping the permanent... Like Mass Manipulation above, I think it's quad-blue cost really held it back though. 6. Kiora Bests the Sea God: I know this has been on other top 10s, so was slightly surprised not to see it here. Gaining control of a creature (or any permanent) is just the cherry on top to steps 1 and 2 of the saga. 7. Lullnmage's Domination: Yeah, it's the same thing as Entrancing Melody or Blue Sun's Twilight but it costs 1 blue mana more, but the potential for 3 free mana towards its X cost is really powerful. I also kind of wonder about effects like Bribery, Spelljack, Gale's Redirection, or Desertion, spells which bring an opponent's creature into play on your side of the battlefield through other means, whether gaining control of a creature spell as it's cast, bringing it directly into play from their hand/deck, exiling it and getting to cast it (often for free or with any color of mana), or etc. I know I've seen a couple of those be played in certain formats like Smirking Spelljacker or Commandeer.
I'm guessing Bribery doesn't make the list because it's not technically a mind control effect since it gets the card from the opponent's deck. It's still quite a devastating effect. Bribery is no joke in commander though. Imagine taking someone's Blightsteel Colossus.
Someone attempted to mind control me into not finding this video, but luckily I broke free thanks to a Homeward Path and can now continue my quest for "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)"!
Thank you for stressing the syllables the way I like when you say Control Magic. It’s a small, petty preference, but it makes me happy. I honestly think the other way lots of people pronounce it contributed to control effects being called mind control effects.
not the same thing: but the other day a blue player played one of my cards form my graveyard. Bloodthirsty Conquerror... I used a spell that returned target creature to OWNER'S hand. Poof the card went back to Y hand :D and i cast it to win the game.
Thanks for update. I prefer term control magic effects, as the card is older. I think mind controll was unlucky card name. Sounds to me more like effect for controlling oponnent's turn.
Just played against a fella who used an Agent of Treachery to steal my Archangel of Suffering. Not a smart move, milled out in two turns. Just imagine spending 7 mana to get yourself what is effectively a loss condition in any deck that isn't buit for it.
You should refine this and create a distinctive “as long as you control ______” theft effects list. Then again, maybe there are too few theft effects to justify making two top 10s so similar. I just think that “Bribery” effects and “Temptation” effects are different enough that they could support their own lists.
Nizzahon, did you consider damage replacement effects? E.g instead of doing damage etc gain control of target creature? Would also be interesting to know about stealing and gain control enchantments
Archmages Charm is goated. It even earned me 1st at my lgs by taking my opponents Sigardas Aid. It's a counterspell that's okay to top deck the turn after their best card. Lol.
Whenever I watch these updated lists I like to ask myself if the cards knocked off the list would see play today. Control Magic might. It's not too expensive but there is a lot of enchantment removal. There are other enchantment synergies though
considering that we play weaker mind control auras in modern right now, I imagine if control magic ever got a modern legal reprint it'd imediatly see play. that 1 extra mana pip to be able to take anyting is very worth it. doubly so if it became pioneer legal
i would argue "i mind control your creature" is as much nonsaying to someone not knowing what it means as "i control magic" i would even argue that "control" is clearer that you get control "mind control" could be anything
Nizzahon, I have some sad news. I've been watching your channel for years and have seen almost every top 10. But with the new year, I'm cutting back on channels about content that doesn't apply to my current interests (I played MTG as a kid but haven't played in 10 or more years). So this means I'm going to unsubscribe from your channel 😢😢😢 You've consistently produced great quality and I'll be missing it! Thank you for everything ♥️
missed opportunity for the card kingdom plug at the end to say "if you want to gain control of any of these cards,"
We love you Nizzahon!

Gilded Drake is so powerful it even predates the creation of MtG
Imagine stealing a 5/5 Artifact Creature with Flying, Trample and Rampage 4.
God I remember Ikoria standard and how toxic Winota was with this

You should do this list again, but without blue.
Willow Satyr let's goooo
This would be like doing non-green ramp or non-red burn.
Its a top 10. Not a top 5.
Thank you for stressing the syllables the way I like when you say Control Magic. It’s a small, petty preference, but it makes me happy. I honestly think the other way lots of people pronounce it contributed to control effects being called mind control effects.
I've... always called these effects Control Magic effects, and never before heard anyone call them Mind Control effects? Is my playgroup that weird? 😅
Not at all, especially for us who have been playing for a long time.
My casual playgroup always referred to it as "thieve" or "steal" effects

Even after all these years, my heart still belongs to mega mana + Memnarch.
Treachery used to be huge back then…
Confiscation coup not targeting is cracked. Ive always wanted to brew an edh energy deck, and that on its own is a reason to include blue
Awesome! Easily my favorite effect!

Please do Top 10 Basic Lands! Thank You.
First comment. @ Nizzahon, I really appreciate all the data you present on the game.
Out of curiosity, what was Mind Control's score?
Typically the card the effect is named after sees lots of play, even if it's not top of the list.
Would 3-mana mind control even be good enough any more?
Yes.
10000%
Yavimayas embrace and the future sight enchant permanent with flash is nice as well
Guessing Vedalken shackles at number 1
Spoilers:
Damn, I missed. Didn't remember Threads existing
Also surprised that Mind Harness didn't even appear
I want to know when we're going to get an agent of treachery heist deck
My Sen Triplets deck thanks you.
I've been watching since 2019. 6 more years and it will be the 2031 version 😂.
That’s nuts 😵💫 I can’t believe 2031 is so close

Hostage Taker?
Edit:
Not even on the list damn
Hostage taker requiring casting the stolen card makes it ineligible for this list.
@@hawffensive644 Ah, fair fair.

What about Mind Harness?
"Control Magic" is also ambiguous, since control is a playstyle
I really wanna jam the majority of cards in this video into a deck and see what happens.
Agent of treachery is such a stupid and unfun card that i'm just taking it out of the commander deck i have it in

Alright, betting on shackles.
U forgot treachery 😀
i didn't forget it -- it just doesn't actually have that many points.
@NizzahonMagic control magic is on the list , treachery using 1 more mana but untapping all lands, I thought it would be in the first place .
card isnt very good outside Cube and EDH
Whos we? I've ALWAYS called these Control Magic effects lmao
At my LGS we call it Grand Theft MTG.
