  • Quarterback Donovan McNabb and the Syracuse Orangemen traveled to Norman, Oklahoma to take on the Oklahoma Sooners coached by John Blake. The game featured two impressive offensive stars including McNabb along with Sooner's running back sophmore De'Mond Parker. Oklahoma would stun the Orangemen 36-34, blocking 3 kicks (2 punts, 1 field goal) giving Oklahoma it's first home win under John Blake, and first home win since North Texas game in 1995.

This is the first OU game I remember going to in person. Love Sooner football.

If demond Parker would have stayed his senior year he would have been on Bob Stoops first team at Oklahoma. His running with Josh Heupel passing would have been really dangerous.

Michael Bishop deserved the Heisman Trophy in 1998. He dismantled this Syracuse team in the Fiesta Bowl at the end of the 1997 season

These OU teams actually had some talent. Blake just wasn't ready. Syracuse was pretty Damn good.

De"Mond was a great RB for OU - one of the best I think. One thing though, Cedric Jones played from 92 to 95. Was drafted #5 in the 96 NFL Draft. Parker played from 96-98 (redshirt 95')..
We did have good defensive players though during that time: Kelly Gregg, Travian Smith, Tyrell Peters, Broderick Simpson, Dale Allen.

I remember watching this on tv and there was this Syracuse fan who lived above me that would cheer real loud when something good happened for them and then I cheered real loud when OU did something good. We were like that the whole game. I got the final cheer. GO OU !

I was there from 95-98! I grew up with Barry and the Sooners dominating. This was a bad time to be a Sooner. I still went to every game. Every time Eric Moore would drop back to pass you could hear the entire stadium hold their breath.

John Blake. Great recruiter, but not Head Coach material. He was a top tier position coach at best. He was the alumni scapegoat hire to make every one forget about the Schnellenberger debacle. We have to give him some credit. The guys he recruited had so much talent. We found that out 3 years later with Bob Stoops and a 7th National Title.

I would have loved to have seen Demond Parker alongside Josh Heupel in 1999. I think with Parker, we would have closed the door on Notre Dame, Texas, & Ole Miss. (all close losses). Could have won 10 games with him.

I totally agree. We went 7-5 that year we were up 17 points against ND and Texas. Parker would have sealed the deal. OU were in the lead in EVERY game

I was four when this happened and when OU football became great again, people tried to forget the 90s, so i ignored it as well. I really only watched this video to see how McNabb fared against my favorite team. But Demond Parker was apparently a monster.

you could smell in the air how ready we were for a winner...little did we know back then that we would return to glory and we haven't looked back. we'll never forget Big Bob yelling "it's blocked! it's blocked! it's blocked" on the radio call. our friend group still yells that at each other when we get together to catch up lol. My buddy delivered a Pizza Shuttle pie to the box once and got him to do it for him live on the elevator ride up lmao. too bad we didn't have cell phones to record it...back when word of mouth made a good story. I digress...BMRSNR

SU fan here. We had two chances to beat the Sooners when they were down and basically botched both of them. In 1994 Oklahoma got a shot at the game winning field goal because of a celebration penalty on Syracuse. This one was all about blocking for our kickers, which we didn't do. Now Oklahoma would probably beat us by 50 points. :(

I remember working on my car this day & listening to the game on the radio. If I remember right McNabb couldn't handle the heat and was throwing up on the field.

Yes, me and a buddy from HS drove down from Tulsa for this game... 16 years old, was really our first time *going anywhere since we'd gotten our license (lol the 90 minute drive from tulsa, still, at 16 its a big deal).. Both of us were huge OU fans, had endured losing, lots of losing. And figured this game with Mcnabb, Spotwood, Kevin Johnson, would be no different (truth be told that was half of it, wanting to see SU play)... We had seats waaaaay up on the press box side, south end of the north side if that makes sense. Right next to the big ass concrete wall that accompanies the stairs on the edge of the stadium... The sun beamed off of that, and onto us, ALL DAY LONG. And yes, it was hot. Damn hot. The kinda hot where all you wanna do is swim, nothing more. Id say a few OU-Texas games I've been to, and FSU in Norman in 09 were the only ones that could make a claim to be that hot... Anyway. We all couldn't figure out what Mcnabb was doing. They were huddling, like normal, then it looked like half the huddle started dancing... Mcnabb backed away, then we saw it spew from his facemask. His teammates in the huddle were dodging it, hence the dancing... It was really a great game. Back and forth. When they got it down 2 on their goal line, we went to the ol prevent defense (prevents you from winning) and rushed like one guy. Mcnabb just stood back there, eventually hitting 2 deep balls. You just knew in the stands we were gonna lose. People began packing their stuff up, cussing, you just knew it....Been so long since it seemed a good break led to an OU win at that time, them hitting a GW FG just figured it was par for the course.. So, when at the last second, you saw the ball go *DOINK off one of our guys hands...then looked up to see time had expired, and no horrible break was gonna beat us...Yes, the entire stadium erupted, then went barraling down toward the field. I looked up celebrating to give my buddy a high 5, he was already halfway down the ramp... As hot, and tired, and sunburned as I was...didnt feel a thing. The loooooong ramp that leads you all the way back down from the nose bleeds seemed like 10 feet, and I was at the white wall of the field. Leaped that, and into celebratory bliss. Lost in crimson and cream oblivion.... Sorry for the novel, just will always be a special day/memory.... Will cherish it forever.
