    I think we can look at the past examples of "East India Companies" to get an idea of what future space colonization may look like. After establishment, it will become necessary to make sure that they do not degenerate into wretcked hives of scum and villainy.

      The environment shapes the culture in many ways. Considering how fickle and fragile our presence on the celestial bodies would be even after a millennia from now, as any serious prospects for terraforming require from one and a half to few thousand years, I think there would be a lot of environmental pressure to tone down violence. Though the systemic lack of resources and poverty could still arise

    I disagree that there wouldn't be borders in space, just because it'd be difficult doesn't mean that people wouldn't TRY. IMO, when the Age of Space Colonization is underway, there will be borders, they'll just be fuzzy and permeable.

    Could you make a post nuclear apocalyptic scenario based in Europe and siberia. I think you could create a really cool in depth scenario.
    But if you do this then all I ask is that you make my home city of Hull a "new reno"(fallout 2) kinda place but it should be called "the Shithole". I imagine that after the government looses control of northern England the people would look towards criminal gangs for protection, small gang wars would appear across the city but soon they would unite under a single syndicate and organise the "reconstruction" of hull, which really meant the fortification of the gangs HQ soon to be center of government.
    Because of the syndicates lack of concern for the general population, survivors would start to use terms such as "shit hole" or "mos eisley" to describe hull as a reched hive of scum and villainy.
    Others would call it "night city"(cyberpunk 2077) due to the syndicate owned law enforcement making it a sort of anarcho capitalist city state. As time went by, all people would adopt shit hole as the name for the city as future generations didn't understand the references of a by gone era.

    This may seem like a stupid/basic question, but how would we get oxygen and food to these future bases on the moon, Mars or Jupiter’s moons?

    • @Neatling
      @Neatling  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You would produce oxygen locally, using water-ice deposits. Water is made of Hydrogen and Oxygen, so you can turn it into air.
      You would produce food locally in super efficient indoor farms. Early on settlers would probably have to eat a vegan diet, bringing livestock would be ridiculously expensive, and frankly a waste when you don't need them.
      But in the long term, you could cultivate meat (make lab-grown meat). Depends on when that technology is perfected.

      Yes you will see all of them. The UAE put a orbiter around Mars with japanese and american expertise. They propose on building a mars city by 2117 and right now, it's just in its early, early stages. Latin American and African countries will eventually look to space to solve problems that are plaguing their continents. Space is a big place so its not far off to think that almost every nation, group, and corporations will have their own 'colonies' in the solar system, whether they are o'neil colonies or planetary settlements. The future is bright for everyone on earth if they utilize this opportunity.

    I guide my thinking with economics. What would be the business case for Mars, the Moon or even LEO.
    At the moment humanity is one big, centralized economy. Everything we do has to be of some utility to our one and only market. LEO and GEO are the most lucrative regions of space as we can do communications and Earth imaging from there. But the Moon and Mars have far less economic purpose.
    We know that mining and shipping products to Earth makes no economic sense. Earth has everything we need much more inexpensively. Manufacturing on the Moon or Mars runs against the same drawbacks as doing it on Earth: gravity. Any zero-G manufacturing is best done in LEO.
    There is a small market for scientific data that can only be obtained on the Moon or Mars. Robots are forever going to be orders of magnitude less expensive to collect science.
    There will be idealists who will go just “because”. But unless launch costs go down by 99.9% idealists are going to need backers. So while “because” will be enough for the idealist the backers will want some path to making some returns.
