As someone obsessed with Romamticism art, the phrase "time eats all his children in the end." It reminds me of the painting "Saturn devouring his son"(Saturno devorando a su hijo) by Francisco de Goya. I think I only relate them because in the painting Saturn, which is literally Chronos, god of time, in Roman culture, is precisely devouring the head of his son
to add onto this, the original myth that the title of the painting alludes to (which, as a side note, was not coined by the artist himself- he died before he got the privilege to name it) centers kronos eating his children, the first of the modern greek gods.
it's probably a purposeful connection. saturn/cronos (greek god of time) has a myth where he did indeed eat his children. the goya painting is just one of several on the subject.
I don't know about the Italians, but Kronos was the titan patron of agriculture, that's why he is also shown bearing a scythe. You must (as most foreigners bc of Turkish imperialism/west Europe supremacy at the time when the first excavations were made the foreign archeologists never bothered to ask locals and just made their own conclusions) The personification of time is Chronos (as all personifications; the name is is the relevant noun(like nyx=night, iris=rainbow and so on) , in this case Chronos= time) but yeah. Kronos had agriculture/farming idk the correct English word and chronos was time.
@@sweatpantsromance and to add to the foreshadowing, one of those sons is Zeus, which is the only survivor and eventually defeated Kronos by giving him a wine and mustard mixture which made him rebirth his now adult children and killed him with his scythe. It foreshadowed Jane Doe's fate.
I think its also a reference to earlier in the show when Jane Doe shares a fact about male lions sometimes eating their offspring and how she finds that idea terrifying, i always took this as her fear of dying without being remembered which is exactly what happened to her
I just can’t imagine singing this WHILE FLYING. Props to anyone playing Jane, that’s amazing. I get chills at all the “ahhs” and the descending runs… I think I have a new obsession.
let me tell you this: i saw a production of rtc in Princeton back in may and watching jane fly live is mesmerizing. she didn't fly too high but still had me with my jaw on the floor.
“Time eats all his children in the end” actually makes me so fucking feral oh my god, it’s such a good reference to Greek mythology and her earlier “fun fact” about lions
God Emily Rohm’s voice is perfect for Jane Doe the song and character she’s combines the creepy tragic and hypnotic feelings perfectly and the fact that she can hold her notes while doing a cartwheel in the air and being upside down with no wavering or strain shows how brilliantly talented she is
this song is absolutely beautiful but the most horrible part is that jane doe should NOT be a jane doe. she was apart of a choir- her family shouldve noticed she joined a choir and never returned when the choir got into an accident. but they didnt. and she is forever a nobody.
(also if she's 17 she _really_ should have a driver's license or something that her finger prints could attach to, and the fact she doesn't raises a lot of questions... None of them comforting)
They actually state in the musical that she joined last minute, no-one knew her despite everyone in Uranium City knowing each other, no-one arrived to verify her body(aka her parents), she lost her head so they couldn't use that, the machine didn't read her fate before the accident, and the ONLY person who could possibly know who she was died of a heart attack after the accident

It's probably a reference to the beginning of the show. They're all given catchphrases and Jane's is about how lions will eat their children when they get jealous of them and how that scares her. Which could also be a reference to Kronos, but IDK, I'm not a writer, lmao.
@@elliottheuselessgoldfish8236 Ooo I didn't know that! I think it's both then. Kronos is quite literally time, "chronos" is the root of words like "chronological".
that’s really interesting. I interpret ‘time eats all it’s children’ means that time robs everyone of their childhood,, and eventually leaves everyone as the same forgotten story that Jane is
Right afterwards she also says: 'When silence falls, does anyone care?' which seems to reference the saying "when a tree falls in the woods, does it make a sound" (ie. if something is not experienced, does it actually matter?). You see it in her name too, and in the way she references John Doe at the end of the song. I really like how the songwriter twisted common modern-day sayings and concepts just enough to make them feel foreign and otherworldly. They've also focused on evoking imagery that matches Jane's character. It makes the song feel 'bigger' in its subject matter than it would if we heard the same in more familiar language, which is particularly needed for this character.
I always figured it was a reference to her lion catchphrase, and also “consolation” in that EVERYBODY’s name will be forgotten one day, once the last person who knew you has died.
people say that the high notes are her screaming/that she died after the other kids so here's my contribution: 0:52 you can hear the other kids doing the almost high notes and then jane singing alone
I love how you can hear the desperation in her voice. Scattering for an identity when you have none is a fate more cruel than the death she experienced.

"I hear the anguish of the streets"is referring to how cut off heads remain conscious for 25-30 seconds. an experiment was formed a while ago where when peoples heads got cut off, a man asked the heads questions and they responded by blinking. this means jane doe was conscious for HALF A MINUTE, hearing people screaming when they saw her head
Just saw this show today and there was a Q&A session with the cast at the end. The girl who played Jane Doe said singing during the flying parts is like singing while keeping a steady plank.
"And she's asking Why Lord? This is no way to die, Lord" It must be horrible not knowing anything about you and at the same time knowing that the way you died was very unfair.
This song absolutely haunts me because when I was living in New York, I discovered the body of homeless woman outside my apartment building. It feels like her soul is crying out to me I can’t do anything to help her
I'm so sorry to her for what she went through in her life and the way in which it ended, and I'm so sorry to you for witnessing a part of it. By remembering her and grieving for her in a way that other people may not have, I believe that you are doing her justice. Be well
i love the polarity between jane and noel's songs. noel's lament is noel yearning for a life he never had. jane's is about a life that she did have, but had forgotten.
I like how the drumroll you hear at 4:30 is similar to one you would hear at a circus or carnival when a performer would dive into water from a very high platform. It not only feels like it signifies the end of the song but also Jane's "end" from riding the Cyclone.
@@americaroleplayer yeah lol, I kinda had the same conversation with myself, so it probably is a reference to Kronos, but I also read that it could be a reference to her catchphrase, about how the lion eats his cubs, but to me that doesn't really make any sense as to why she said 'time' so I don't really believe that one lol
@@m0thrtxic113 maybe its correlated to her catchphrase, but they made it more related to time, since she would be forgotten eventually because they didn't know who she was
@@americaroleplayer It could be a reference to Kronos, but I'm not entirely sure, because technically Kronos didn't eat all his children, and also I don't think she would see it as a consolation if it was referencing Kronos as if all his children were eaten, they wouldn't have been freed. However, as Kronos had 6 children that were gods, and there were 6 students in the choir, it could make sense. If it were to be interpreted as Kronos, then it could also represent Jane as Zeus, the last one to arrive/be born and the one who wasn't eaten properly, (Zeus was swapped for a rock, and Jane was part doll and "escaped"). If this interpretation is to be believed (the Jane Zeus one) then it might be predicted that Jane frees the other 5 choir students at some point after the events of the musical, just as Zeus did. I can't believe I just typed that all up. Anyways, it might make sense it might not I don't really know.
FINALLY! I saw the production in Seattle four times and I've been praying for a cast recording for years now! I can be at peace now, just like the kids.
I'm VIBRATING. I saw this show back when I was in high school and this song specifically influenced my path as an artist and to hear the full song after all these years makes me want to cry oh my goddd
Does anyone else try and figure out exactly how Jane died? I mean it’s implied that she died last as she must’ve been seated in the back but how exactly did she lose her head? I would accept the gruesome idea of she must’ve landed on the tracks again unlike the others but the way she sings about her head kind of implies it’s still intact somewhere doesn’t it? So I don’t think her head was crushed I think she was fully decapitated but simply how would that occur from a derailed rollercoaster if the others were presumably killed by impact with the ground.
I once watched a movie where someone looked out a car window while it was going really fast and got their head knocked off by a streetlight so I sort of have a theory that she may have gotten bonked on the face by a support beam while the cart was falling or something like that
Warning: a few spoilers, for those who haven't seen the show and/or listened to the album. This one just makes me sad, man. This whole show does, really, but there are plenty of comedic and fun moments sprinkled throughout before you get to this part that make you laugh and forget you're watching a show about dead children. When you get to this song, all the comedy vanishes (for now, anyway), and the reality of the situation comes crashing in. She's dead. They're _all_ dead, and she's the worst off because she can't remember who she is/was. You can just feel her confusion and sorrow and, later on in the song, her rage (during the _"Why,_ Lord?" parts). It's this anguished demand for an explanation, one that you really want to answer but, at this point in the story, just can't. It's depressing and makes your heart go out to Jane, and I think _that's_ a testament to how well Emily Rohm did in this musical! :)
For me, the only parts that really break my heart are Ballad of Jane Doe, and Talia. Because, on the flipside of your explanation. Talia is about a man who loves someone so much, he'd do anything for her. And knowing he's dead, and he can never hear her again, never talk to her. That all he has in the afterlife is whatever's on his cell phone. And he can't make good on all of his promises. The two songs utterly wrecked me the first time.
“Time eats all his children in the end” alluding to Ancient Greek mythology where Kronos, king of the Titans, is cursed so that his children will one day overthrow him. His solution is to eat all of the newborn children he has with his wife Rhea. In the song Jane uses it to say that no one can escape death, Time takes us all in the end. But the missing part of the myth is that this is the story of the birth of Zeus; after all her other children were eaten, Rhea became fed up and swapped out newborn Zeus for a rock wrapped in swaddling clothes like a baby. She gives that rock to Kronos instead, and Zeus grows up to overthrow the Titans and his father. So Time doesn’t eat all his children in the end. This one line foreshadows the ending of the show, that the other students will die and pass on, but Jane will not be eaten. She gets a new life. Favorite line❤️

Please I'm literally hyperfixated on this musical and if it mixes with one of my auditory loves I'm going to overjoyed. Like genuinely I catch dies irae so easily, but it's not catching properly this time for some reason I'm referring to: "A mel-o-dy floats through the air when sil-ence falls does no one care? Jane Doe." It's used so often in media, and I love it. Some examples are the "siren" esc call from Frozen 2, a background noise in the pink shape guys song from Squid Game, and even a scene in Star Wars I think. Once you hear it, you genuinely can't unhear it. It makes absolute sense for this musical too, as dies irae is a song used as a symbol for death.
Omg- a figured this too some months ago but with the “And from the ground beneath my feel” line but didn’t catch that it is way more present in the part you pointed out!
“Time eats all his children in the end” I like that line and idk if I’m the only one who got this or I’m just slow. But it is referencing back to when she talks about the lion eating his children, then making more, then eating them again, just to make more. It’s beautiful.
it’s a very cool line i believe it’s referencing this and the painting “Saturn Devouring His Son” because Saturn was the Roman God of Time, it’s crazy how detailed this show is.
Jane has the only choir-esk song, this song also has carnival type music in the background, I think it is because thats all she knows about herself. The choir, and the cyclone/fair.
This song has such great potential for OC playlists. It can be for a character who died and is afraid of being forgotten, a person who killed themself and was hoping to know what they would be after they died, a person who is feeling all kinds of emotions at once during a breakdown. This song has a lot
Having seen S. J. Pelzer perform this live (multiple times, about a decade ago) nothing compares to it. The richness and fullness of SJP's voice cannot be replicated outside a live performance, simply heart-wrenching this performance.
so, y’all i figured out how her skirt stays up when she’s upside down! she has a shirt she puts on at the end of ricky’s song that has boning in it (basically just long bits of plastic) so it doesn’t flop
I like to think the line “when silence falls, does no one care?” Is about how when people stop talking about the cyclone accident, no one will care about the ‘Jane doe’ in the story :3
3:50 I like how the notes rise in this part, almost symbolizing a roller coaster train slowly moving to the peak of the track, before everything derails and goes chaotic once more.
To me this song also symbolizes a young person who used to be a normal active teenager then later became ill and as their body gives out they beg why it had to be this way and how. The anger, the screams, the operatic highs and lows. But there are multiple takes on every song, all are correct it’s up to you
It's actually from a musical called ride the cyclone. Essentially some choir teens die while riding a faulty ride called the cyclone and jane doe here lost her head in the accident so nobody was able to identify her.
I’ve noticed that’s Jane sings “ if this is how I die why be left with no family and no friends “ and since later on she makes friends with the others it symbolises this is not how she will die like this and that she will be brought back
I don't know much about this musical so I'm just spit balling but since she had no head we can assume she was decapitated while on the ride one way or another. I find this frightening as, for anyone who doesn't know, when you're decapitated your brain still works and you're still awake till it shuts down like, twenty-ish Seconds later due to the lack of blood. This means that not only was she decapitated, she'd probably watched her head hit the ground before she officially died. Of course, it's possible that her head was mangled upon decapitation which would've rendered the death almost instant so she wouldn't of had to deal with that. But in the situation she was *just* decapitated she'd of been awake for it. This is not important to the story in any way as it appears she has no clue who she is. But imagine not only having to basically watch and feel yourself die, but also have no one not even yourself remember who you are. Once again, I haven't watched the musical so I have no clue what I'm talking about. I just found this interesting and wanted to share my thoughts.
i believe she was decapitated as how she sings about her head "or is it rotting somewhere with my head?" that makes it sound like the whole head is somewhere out there, **rotting**

I think its also a reference to earlier in the show when Jane Doe shares a fact about male lions sometimes eating their offspring and how she finds that idea terrifying, i always took this as her fear of dying without being remembered which is exactly what happened to her

this song is absolutely beautiful but the most horrible part is that jane doe should NOT be a jane doe. she was apart of a choir- her family shouldve noticed she joined a choir and never returned when the choir got into an accident. but they didnt. and she is forever a nobody.
(also if she's 17 she _really_ should have a driver's license or something that her finger prints could attach to, and the fact she doesn't raises a lot of questions...
None of them comforting)
If only anyone on the planet had ever seen Legoland, we’d be able to piece things together

I'm pretty sure "time eats all its children in the end" is a reference to Kronos (the titan in greek mythology) eating his kids (the olympians)?

"I hear the anguish of the streets"is referring to how cut off heads remain conscious for 25-30 seconds. an experiment was formed a while ago where when peoples heads got cut off, a man asked the heads questions and they responded by blinking.

"And she's asking Why Lord? This is no way to die, Lord" It must be horrible not knowing anything about you and at the same time knowing that the way you died was very unfair.
This song absolutely haunts me because when I was living in New York, I discovered the body of homeless woman outside my apartment building. It feels like her soul is crying out to me I can’t do anything to help her
That's sad and terrifying. I don't like it.
That is... certainly unfortunate. I'm sorry.
I’m so sorry, Jesus…that kinda thing has a long lasting effect on someone :((
I'm so sorry to her for what she went through in her life and the way in which it ended, and I'm so sorry to you for witnessing a part of it. By remembering her and grieving for her in a way that other people may not have, I believe that you are doing her justice. Be well
no because my jaw DROPPED when she started singing “this is how i die lord” her voice is so deep and unexpected
i love the polarity between jane and noel's songs.
noel's lament is noel yearning for a life he never had.
jane's is about a life that she did have, but had forgotten.
I like how the drumroll you hear at 4:30 is similar to one you would hear at a circus or carnival when a performer would dive into water from a very high platform. It not only feels like it signifies the end of the song but also Jane's "end" from riding the Cyclone.
It’s also played before executions!
"Time eats all his children in the end-" Is that a reference to Kronos the Titan of time??? DAMN!
That's what I thought too! But it could also just mean that in a few decades none of us will be remembered if we aren't important or whatever lol
@@m0thrtxic113 I'm pretty sure it's a reference to Kronos because she says HIS children. Otherwise it would just be IT'S children.
She sings this beautifully while spinning in the air and I can’t even sing it sitting still

“AND AM ASKING WHY LORD??? IF THIS IS HOW I DIE LORD??” 🗣️🗣️🗣️🔊🔊‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️🔥🔥🔥

My mom laughed when she was floating and I was just in silence taking in the lyrics

"Is there anyone to tell me who am I" is so real omg
also "no singing songs of celebration, just this sorry speculation" and "cruel existence was only a sham" hit hard

Like genuinely I catch dies irae so easily, but it's not catching properly this time for some reason
I'm referring to:
"A mel-o-dy

It's used so often in media, and I love it. Some examples are the "siren" esc call from Frozen 2, a background noise in the pink shape guys song from Squid Game, and even a scene in Star Wars I think. Once you hear it, you genuinely can't unhear it. It makes absolute sense for this musical too, as dies irae is a song used as a symbol for death.

it’s a very cool line i believe it’s referencing this and the painting “Saturn Devouring His Son” because Saturn was the Roman God of Time, it’s crazy how detailed this show is.
Jane has the only choir-esk song, this song also has carnival type music in the background, I think it is because thats all she knows about herself. The choir, and the cyclone/fair.
I wonder if the “John” is John the Baptist. Who lost his head. I know it’s also “John Doe” but I wonder
Could be ambiguous on purpose so both could be implied. That’d be pretty cool

I’ve noticed that’s Jane sings “ if this is how I die why be left with no family and no friends “ and since later on she makes friends with the others it symbolises this is not how she will die like this and that she will be brought back
GOD every single line of this song is gut wrenchingly perfect
Am i a male with a low voice? Yes. Am i gonna sing this shit for the rest of the day? Also yes.
I just found this interesting and wanted to share my thoughts.
i believe she was decapitated as how she sings about her head
"or is it rotting somewhere with my head?"
that makes it sound like the whole head is somewhere out there, **rotting**
@@unknownpasta8103eah, that could imply that her head was still intact, which means she was still conscious right after she got decapitated
@@a.w.istudios8702 i believe so
as the line "I *hear* the anguish of the streets"
presumably as her head hits the ground
I love this song so much, and the fact that Jane gets flung around while singing this is incredible. I could never!
as a soprano I love singing this song, (great practice for healthy high notes!)
For anyone wondering, the highest note in the song is a Db6(I think, I used my piano for this) , and if I had to guess the lowest note is a C4.
