Lyrics
Well you didn't wake up this morning 'cause you didn't go to bed
You were watching the whites of your eyes turn red
The calendar on your wall was ticking the days off
You've been reading some old letters
You smile and think how much you've changed
All the money in the world couldn't buy back those days
You pull back the curtain
And the sun burns into your eyes
You watch a plane flying
Across a clear blue sky
This is the day, your life will surely change
This is the day, when things fall into place
You could have done anything, if you wanted
And all your friends and family think that you're lucky
But the side of you they'll never see
Is when you're left alone with your memories
That hold your life together, like glue
Music video by The The performing This Is The Day. (C) 1983 Sony Music Entertainment UK Limited
I'm sitting here in my car in the park, listening to this while tears flow down my cheeks... currently unemployed and homeless (living in my car).
Each time, I feel like "giving up," and feel hopeless, I look at the word "HOPE" taped to my dashboard above my radio, and I go on. I realize life can truly change in an instant, in an hour or even a day, and keep the faith.
I know I will someday rise above all I'm dealing with and be forever grateful I DIDN'T give up! 🤗
Wish me luck!
Good luck to you
Hope you already had your day! If you didn’t make it tomorrow 🤙 whatever you’re good at, go find someone who needs those skills and offer
Hope! I am with you, man.
Please ask GOD for help...& I'll keep U in my prayers, as I've been there myself many times...
❤❤❤
This low, smooth, velvet voice never fails to bring me joy.
Bought this album way back in the 80' in my 20's and loved it for its wit and great vocals and musicality. It's never failed to lift my spirits!
Confermo
gotcha beat we started into this trip in 12th grade if I can remember THAT FAR back. I was a teenager and this was hitting the FSU Alt radio station and 2 particular dance clubs. Club 506/Late Nite Library and CPA downtown. THE BEST OF TIMES the 80s
The harmonica really adds to the quiet hopefulness and bittersweetness of this song.
This song never fails to bring tears it is the last song I heard before I got the word my daughter passed. Miss you sweet Victoria!
RIP. Hope you're doing good, man.
Bless you. I haven't got your back story but this track has always brought a tear to my eye.
I'm really sorry about your daughter.
Need more than a song, from a strangely named, one man bad for that.
Be blessed, & I'm sure you will see you daughter again one day!
One of the staple in my playlist....gonna play this over and over all day....when THIS pandemic ends.....miss the best time being young during the 80s...the Generation of great artist and music....The The.....
Why wait till the pandemic ends to play this over and over all day?
we're still waiting, aren't we?
bring me back in a good and young time. Amazing
I think the entire world needs to go back to the 80's or another time. Massive paradigm shift.
me encantaría saber la traducción en español🥰
THE THE, maybe the most underrated band to come out of England. Matt Johnson is a genius. Infect me with your love!
Just probably the most under rated band.
Maybe it is because of his political T-Shirt ;@)
it's so funny and annoying at the same time when people overusing expressions like "... is a genius" - he is a good musician, had his good times, he had his bad times, just an human, that's it :-)))
Prophet . Soothsayer
Agree. This video should have at least 10x the views. I went through a big The The phase late 80's/early 90's. Matt Johnson is certainly a genius, and Johnny Marr isn't too shabby a guitarist either!
This bro on the harmonica is killing it!
alexander dragutinovic haha so damn true he goin in 🤟🏼 !!!!!!!!
Mr Fitting crushing it!!!
yES!!!! WOW!!!
the harBROnica
Creo la mejor de ellos en Harmonica es SLOW EMOTION REPLAY
Fantastic album, love this version but the album version with the accordion is unbelievably good, the lyrics are so deep and searching, it will be my funeral song for sure :-)
Excellent idea!
Infected is still one of my favorite albums. What a voice. Stunning lyrics.
Yes! Infected, it's just in us.💞
I CAN LISTEN TO THIS SONG OVER AND OVER AGAIN SO SO GOOD
Matt Johnson’s voice always gives me a goosebumps really nice deep voice still sounded like I’m listening to the vinyl 👍👍🙏
Beautiful song !!! Lyrics !!! Vocals!! Great baritone voice with great upper register !!! Voice is better than in 80s !!!
I love this song, I love his voice!
Genius in grace and sound. Smart, witty, dirty, and darkly optimistic.
I actually got his autograph on a T-Shirt and concert program! Thank you Matt and your office staff for helping to make an old lady happy.
Matt never got the recognition he deserved. Great singer and songwriter - definitely in my top 10.
I've heard all the versions with accordions, violins, guitars and keyboards, but this one with the harmonica is definitely my favourite🙂
Agree. And it’s so touching when he raises his right arm as he plays his solo.
Same here
If you like the harmonica, listen to the Aussie band, The Waifs, particularly 'Crazy Train'. Vikki Thorn is incredible.
@@Bushkaboo Thanks mate. I'll check it out.
I'm fan of The The from more than twenty years... Matt's music helped me so many times...
I didn't have opportunity to attend in The The concert, but maybe in the future.
Did you ever go
Helped me greatly through a VERRRRRRY hard time -Thank you.
I was a gay cloested gay teenager 😔 when listening to this. Gave me strength
"There's a side of you they'll never see is when youre left alone with the memories that hold your life together like glue" wow.
My favorite band of all time! Im an 80s dude. This is the Day and Uncertain Smile are my anthem songs now I am in my 50s
I listen to this song regularly because it's effing wonderful, but this is the first time that I have seen this live version. It is superb. Please come to South Africa, Matt.
Great memories of the 80's.
this is the best version,no doubt !!! that harmonica is killin it 🔥🔥
That's overdubbed, the original was unbelievable, but I can't find it anymore.
Best concert 1992 St. Petersburg FL., They opened for Depeche Mode.
They sang and crawled around the Floor in front of us all.
These fellas fucking ROCKED MY LIFE.
1993 SOFAD
Saw that tour, too, Capital Centre outside DC…amazing night.
🤯
From St. Pete my friend, wish I could have been there for this one. Wow, amazing lyrics, so powerful, that harmonica, I think accordion with it would have been cool ...
Soul Mining is a massive album for me. Another amazing Some Bizzare band.
I’d put this on in the dark, headphones on and play it incessantly.
1983 aged 14.
Probably my overall all time favorite artist-can't get enough of them...I remember first hearing "Giant" at a party and was intrigued-found that jacket and I was off...I bought the 10 minute vinyl version of Uncertain Smile sometime after that and then Soul Mining and I was hooked. Still have the vinyl...Cheers!
Perfect lyrics to a 20 something yo guy in the completely headless decade of the 1990ies. Most of the time I was just waiting for the perfect day to change my life. It happend fotunately a decade later when I finally met the woman I love until today. But this outstanding song brings back so many bittersweet memories.
👍
Same. Don't ever get divorced.
Nothing is as headless as this goddamn decade.
I would spin at partying and going crazy having the greatest time, then wake ,turn this song on ,thank you,it's perfect
Heard this (thanks to my sister) in 1983, I was 20. June 2024. if you don't have tears in your eyes, you don't get it and if you don't get it you may be one of the lucky? No so sure. One of the greatest songs ever penned. Bitter sweet. Thank you Matt.
WOOOO! So glad a new generation will discover this wonderful band!! Congrats on the GTA Online placement!. Saw you at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver in .. the 80s . you guys were AMAZING. one of the best sounding concerts i've ever been to.
I can always credit the GTA franchise with finding me great music.
Que saudades....uma parte da minha adolescência foi embalada por essa música...volta ao passado....amoo!
I was only 5 years old when this song came out..... 10years later it became my one of my all time favorites... until NOW!! Thank you
Perfect age to be introduced to fine music!
Auto33bot I was 7.. I feel old.
As a DJ, I would play this song (vinyl) in this run-down dance Bar in NB, Canada. Played it almost every day for several months... because I thought some of the patrons needed therapy,
Matt Johnson is one of the greatest talents that England EVER produced. I bought Infected as soon as it came out and converted many to the greatness of that album every track is pure genius
They were so left field . Lyrically complicated musically seemingly simplistic buy fat from it. The collaborators with Matt Johnson ... Johnny Marr, Jules Holland , Nenah Cherry and his team. They are hugely underrated and it stands the test of time
I think this song could be prophetic❤ 🕊
Couldn't do much better than the original. And yr man goes and does his song like this💙🙏🍀
Got some good news today, so here I am. 🙂
The the this is the day...para sempre em meu ❤️, faz e fará sempre parte de minha vida! Obrigado 😊 Brasil 2021
Aaaaaamo essa música 😍
para sempre 😍
Exactly the sort of track you want to be playing when you walk into a record store.
Not sure how I have got to the age of 57 and have never heard this before - such an emotional song when you sit and look back on your life
That was the day when three musicians did something very special indeed!
Best song in Guardians 3
This song 🎶 brings me so much JOY 🤩‼️👍🙋🏼♀️
damn, dudes vocals are better than the mic.....
gd his voice is as good as ever.
such an underrated band and song.
Possibly my favourite track. I think I’ve felt every emotion when this plays. 35 years. I still think Matt is singing to me.
He is
One of the most beautiful voices of English pop of the 80s! The absolute class The The
It was so cool to hear this song being played in Gardiners of the Galaxy vol 3 I always liked this band ✌️👍
THIS IS F**KING GORGEOUS!
WOW Love that song --- THAT WAS A FANTASTIC VERSION --- Loved that song for many years - Thanks --- Cheers
one of my favorite. songs. instantly Cheers me up
Empire Records! Such a great film with an awesome soundtrack! Ah good memories of being a tv/movie watching teen before the world went mad!
This is the soundtrack of the movie title every day...i love this song
This is unreal, first time I have heard this live
It isn’t live.
I think this is the same harmonica player from the "Dusk" live tour (Johnny Marr played harmonica on the album). Just killing it. This song, no matter which version, lifts my sunken spirit. Bless The The.
3.54 seconds with continuous goosebumps... thats a record!
This song is a masterpiece and it´s very difficult to sing. This guys is simply great.
Fitting on harmonica really makes this my all time fav version of this track!
Wow. I only recently discovered this song and I've been listening to the studio recording over and over again. This is an absolutely incredible alternate take. I'm going to listen to it again immediately. Leave me alone.
I remember this song from when i was a child on top of the pops UK, especially the guy with the harmonica . Oh i just heard it on the movie 'i feel pretty' oh my God such a lovely childhood memory. Specially as an adult when someone tells you 'this is the day ur life will surely change, this is the day when things fall in to place' tells you something strong 💪
Lots of love THE THE
this version is called "That Was The Day" and it was made a decade later.
yes, it was released on the Dis-Infected EP.
Were they more popular in the UK , Australia ? I’ve loved them from the beginning - or close to it . One of the first albums I bought . Wish I still had it . Soul Mining , was it called ? Never worked out how come they’re nearly never spoken of when 80s music is hashed over or played .
00
I've no idea but this song always make me cry, I can't explain it.
Oooooh ooooh! Just “found” this song! I’ve got a brand new favorite for the day!! Weeeeeee! God is good! 😜🥰💗
First time seeing this’! ❤
This is one of the most underrated songs ever
So many memories!!!
Love to hear it .... once and once again .
This is so damn good. I’m just rediscovering The The since those old days mid 80s. So underrated.
A lifelong love song.
Genius Matt
genius! one of my favorite songs ever !!!
I played this song while I was high on weed and alcohol, and playing a videogame. And they're already nostalgic
that what a real singer sounds like
Cara...que época boa foi essa!! Era só curtição 😎
Great rendition. Love to play this as my nye song and bump it!
That harmonica playing is simply heaven, I'm torn which version I prefer. But going by the meaning of the song as being stuck in your bedroom faffing around wanting change, wallowing in self pity but actually not doing anything about it -the amateurish and deliberate use of a bontempti / casio organ which we all had in our bedrooms the 80s is pure genius
Never heard this version OMGAH rock on! Hold your life together like you & me
Damn the man, Save the Empire.
Saw them on the Dusk tour with Depeche Mode at MSG. I wish money "could buy back those days" :((
Dude
Discovered them with Depeche Mode too. Incredible! 😿 I would give anything to go back to that concert. Where has the time gone?!
sigh :)
Damn! I was supposed to see them then too!! In Seattle, but the line to get in was so long that I missed them completely! Still kills me. I could hear 'The Violence of Truth' starting from outside, everyone going wild inside and just wanted to leave lol. I did watch Depeche Mode play and Martin Gore saved the night for me. It wasn't quite the same though. The The was the whole reason I was there.
Canção maravilhosa marcante Lindíssima e inesquecível
Voice still pure as ever! Amazing 👏
Like this melancholy tinkly synthy track by the long standing The The 🎶
Empire Records!!
Jim Fitting's harmonica playing nailed it down
The tears also, my youth, bloody brilliant.. Jools Holland Smashes this..The The so underestimated....
"...hold your life together like glue... "
one of my go to songs to get me out of a funk. : )
What a relief to hear this song
Great music, unique, original, expressive vocals.
this reminds me of my 1st job in 1988, I guy I worked with was a fan of theirs, I worked as a Runner in a video duplication company in Soho, I loved it, life was just beginning for me as an exciting, uncertain, adventure
looks so cold in that stage brrr (love this song)
Espetacular él sonido de la armónica . 👌👍👊💪👉 🇬🇧 🇬🇧 🇬🇧
Eccezionale gruppo. La sua voce è meravigliosa, stupenda. Ho sempre amato i the the.
My man Peter Quill has a great taste for his "I'm gonna f things up" music
Gorgeous voice!!! Love it!
I can't get enough of listening to this song. Play it again! ❤❤❤❤❤
I still LOVE them. 😊
One of my favorites
Could listen over and over. Never irrelevant
Brilliant song Mr J. Love Soul Mining and Giant gets me every time I listen to it.
A Killer track 😂love it so much...remember me on good childhood times...matt at his best...
Das war noch musik 🔊🎶👍🏻 alleine die Mundharmonika, einfach klasse
