      Membranes can definitely sound good, even rubber dome keyboards can sound pleasant.
      Old model ms had a quite nice sound to them imo, and those were buckling spring switch membrane keyboards. Out of rubber dome keyboards though, chiclets can also have a quiet and pleasant tactile sound to them.

      I do not have a video as I am not a videomaker, but I didn't do anything too different from this guy: I applied boron nitride grease in abundance to the contact points between key and keyboard. I used that product simply because it's what I had on hand, so it's probably not ideal but it works well for me.

    Technically a "membrane" keyboard just refers to the method of detecting a keypress and while almost all membrane keyboards use rubber as a switch, some don't (ex. The IBM Model M is technically a membrane board, but it uses buckling spring switches)

    • @estebandelasexface8193
      @estebandelasexface8193 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      yeah technically he's confusing membrane and rubber dome in his explanation, although obviously modern cheap keyboards like that are both. Like you say, a model M is a membrane board but not rubber dome, and topre is rubber dome but not membrane.

    • @strawberryshortcake1258
      @strawberryshortcake1258 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    A membrane keyboard is not where you have rubber replacing the key switches. A membrane keyboard is any keyboard with a membrane inside of it, even old IBM model Ms and such. Membrane keyboards can be very good at times, many people prefer the old model Ms over any modern mechanical keyboards. The membrane creates an output when pressure is put on it.
    What you are referring to are rubber dome switches, where you have a sheet of rubber with domes on it above the membrane, and when pressed put pressure on the membrane, creating an output. They are generally considered worse than most mechanical keyboards, but have the benefit of being relatively cheap and accessible, and being able to have a lot smaller form factor. Some variations like chiclet keyboards can have a little extra tactility and have an even smaller form factor, they dont feel half bad either.
    Both membrane and rubber domes can be quite good, ive seen some keyboards that have individual rubber domes instead of a sheet of domes, and some people really enjoy those. I think hipyo also did a video on a similar thing, where there are rubber domes inside of a housing.

    Just to clear things up, the mat of rubber domes used to get the tactile response is not the membrane. Topre and other electrocapacitive keyboards use rubber domes but don't use membranes. In order to cut costs, membrane keyboards typically don't have a PCB and instead use a couple sheets of thin plastic with conductive traces drawn on them, these are the "membranes". There are typically three layers: the top membrane, a spacer with holes wherever the keys are, and a bottom layer. Whenever a key is pressed it pushes the top layer onto the bottom layer causing the conductive traces to touch and thereby closing the circuit. Membrane keyboards feel like ass to type on because you have to bottom out every time in order to register an input. The feeling of bottoming out is mushy partly due to the mat of rubber domes but mostly due to the fact that you are literally forcing two pieces of plastic to come together. Funny thing is that you don't even need the keycaps, barrel plate (top half of the case), or even the rubber domes to use a membrane keyboard. Since all you're doing is pushing two layers of plastic together, you could just use the keyboard with only the membranes. Thought I'd clear that up since it wasn't really explained that well in this video.

    • @ryoukaip
      @ryoukaip 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      what happen if we put like a heavy ball inside the keycaps, or just somehow make the keycaps heavier, does it make bottoming out easier? i dont have stuff to mod a keyboard so i dont really know lol
      btw English is not my native language so feel free to correct me

    • @kyrian7600
      @kyrian7600 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ryoukaip I don't think so. If whatever you're adding is heavy enough to make bottoming out easier, it's probably too heavy for the rubber domes to bring the keycap back up. There really is no getting around the awful actuation from membranes, it would just be better to save up for a cheap Chinese $30 dollar mechanical keyboard and mod that instead.

      @@itzriverl0l540 it is double the price for much more than double the value in both typing experience and durability. Mechanical keyboards generally never break from regular wear, while a membrane keyboard will last a few years of regular wear at best. No matter the switch, a mechanical keyboard will have a stiff bottom out which after getting used to, makes it impossible to go back to the mushy bottom out of a membrane keyboard. Not to mention the fact that at this price point “double the price” doesn’t mean too much. It’s an extra 10-15 dollars at best
