  • After his outing from The Boondocks, Aaron McGruder pursued a new intellectual property, in the form of the live action comedy series, Black Jesus. It sparked controversy and many assumed blasphemy. This time, in Operation Black Steel, we're gonna look at the show for what is. The 'heart', so to speak.
    Shout to all the talented workers for Black Jesus. I didn't get to mention them all in this video, but they're amazing. Shout out to all of them, and all the great people that make Black Jesus possible. Keep up the awesome work, man.

    Best portrayal of Jesus in television, not because of his race but because his character was just a good guy who just wanted to try to make a community and the world a better place. The fact after every argument he goes “man I still love you though.” Is like your dad arguing with you but it comes from a place of warmth and compassion.

      The Christmas Episode was something that Aaron's been building up to for the longest time since the strip. He always said that he thought Jesus would hate the very concept of Christmas, not only because it's designed for profit, but it's not even his birthday. It's a pagan holiday. Everyone wants things from Jesus, but nobody wanna give Jesus shit.

      Aaron seems to have a knack for writing really strong first seasons. The first season of Black Jesus is great collectively, and I love the story they tell with the garden. But, the second season of Black Jesus is easier to rewatch because each episode feels like its own separate thing.

    Being a Christian that takes my religion seriously and being black on top of that.... I loved this video! I have many many problems with the way we practice our religion (especially in the so-called black church). Black Christians generally put a lot more emphasis on the miraculous part of Jesus, and God for and that matter, and I understand why, but I like how this video explores what it means to have faith and what Jesus would do with us and for us if he were walking around today. I could go on and on, but I'll just say that you've convinced me to check this show out.

    Here's some extended thoughts on the cast.
    After seeing Slink Johnson play Jesus, I know that nobody else could've played Jesus. His portrayal feels genuine and sincere, befitting of the show's vibes. Andra Fuller might not be with the show anymore, but he'll always be a favorite. Almost all of my favorite moments in the series involve him in some capacity, and I wish him the best moving forward.
    Angela Gibbs is an absolute goddess playing Ms Tudi. John Witherspoon, Corey Holcomb and Charlie Murphy, nothing needs to be said. Perfect. Valenzia Algrin is slept on, but she's honestly fantastic as Diane, up there as one of my favorites. King Bach and Antwon Tanner fill their respective roles in a way that feels so genuine. I can't really put it into the words, but I love these guys. Mike Clattenburg is slept on, but he's the reason this show nailed the Trailer Park Boys vibe, in the first place. Shout out to all of them, and all the great people that make Black Jesus possible. Keep up the awesome work, man.

      What you said about atheists is wrong...I know I can't enjoy the rest of the video without putting this out there, but if we saw the REAL Jesus we would have more questions than anyone and we would not "cuss him out" or sling hate at him. We might do so after he has answered our questions and did so with complete bullshit but we would be inquisitive of this strange man.

    My pops used to tell me Jesus stories except he'd set them in the hood. He called him Jerusalem Slim and he'd tell the stories depicted in the Gospels, but as if they were happening in the ghetto, so they seemed _real_ to me. When this show came out it was pretty much exactly like his stories. And for people who take issue with Jesus drinking, smoking, hanging in the streets... STOP IT. His first miracle was LITERALLY turning water _into wine,_ not the reverse. At his last meal he DRANK with his homies and told them to _keep drinking in his memory._ People just say whatever the heck they feel like saying and pretend the Bible justifies it.

    Like you said after season 4 of Boondocks I think a lot of his fans didn't come back to Adult Swim to give Black Jeuses a chance but this show sounds deep...
    Yet that seems like it's the problem; the show is too deep for the average person to get what message it is trying to project. Remember the Boondocks had the same problem

    • @TheStorytellerAJ
      @TheStorytellerAJ  6 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      It has some Boondocks elements too, I find. The biggest one I didn't mention in this video is simply how Aaron, supposedly, views your relationship with God. Season 1 of The Boondocks ends with Huey threatening to expose the governor's gay lover and lightening striking to stop the execution in time for the phone call.
      If the lightening hadn't hit, then the execution would've gone through before the phone call. And, if the Huey hadn't made the threat in the first place, then they would've just executed him after the initial failed attempt.
      Black Jesus presents a similar idea with Season 1 and how it uses the garden to represent God. God is like a garden, in the sense that it won't move unless you move. Unless you nurture and care for it. And, you can't just get frustrated and give up faith because things don't come immediately. It's an interesting metaphor for God, and our relationship with it.

    • @333angeleyes

      So for people who have never seen the show would ONLY give it a try because of your video; what episode would you recommend that person watch to persuade them to start watching the show?

    • @TheStorytellerAJ
      @TheStorytellerAJ  6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Oof. Well, when you watch Season 1 as a collective, the ending pay off is one of the best feelings in the series. But, if you're looking for a standalone episode for someone who is still on the fence about the Black Jesus thing, I'd go with "Never Say When" or "Taco Sundays". Both Season 2 episodes. While, I'd strongly reccomend watching the first 10 episode of Black Jesus, if you still feel iffy about it, try one of those two. You can find them on Hulu, Amazon Video or if you're feelin' spicy, Dailymotion.

      just toke up and watch all of season 1 one sunday.
      Its a show I find fairly bitter sweet though, the idea is great, the acting is good, it has its deep moments without trying to hard, but it still seems to lack whatever made the first 2 seasons of the boondocks amazing.

    • @TheStorytellerAJ
      @TheStorytellerAJ  6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It's certainly not for everyone. And I think Season 1 and 2 of The Boondocks is a very hard bar to top. But, Black Jesus still feels sincere, imo. I, personally, think it's better than Season 3 and 4 of The Boondocks.

    The only problem I had with the show was that Jesus was a bum and non confrontational. He had a trade, and so did his disciples. They weren't just relying on the others to take care of them all the time. Also it didn't have Jesus calling out people on their bs all the time. I know it happened occasionally in the show, but Jesus always did that, religiously (pardon the pun).

    • @CTHD13
      @CTHD13 5 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Storyteller is arguing that this show is focused on how we relate to Jesus NOW though. He did those things while he was physically present, but now it’s up to us to work for our food, tithe, live righteously, and spread the word. Jesus isn’t handing out fish anymore.
      And you might say that God still visibly blesses us though. But that’s the second point. Miracles don’t come when you want them to, and if you get divine help it’s just barely identifiable. And Jesus won’t call you out audibly for wrong doing, you have to listen very very closely to hear the still-small voice.
      In a sense, Black Jesus isn’t meant to portray the Jesus that physically lived. He’s meant to represent what Jesus’ current presence in our lives actually feels like.

    I'm one of "those" atheists; i think I'd prefer to interrogate Jesus to see if he believed what he was saying about himself. There is a common trope in Christian apologetics that ask which of 3 "Ls" Jesus was: lord, liar, and lunatic. They missed one other L: legend. Was he a god (least likely imo)? Did he even believe what he was saying? If he believed it was he sane? If he existed then i'd argue that he was a legend: someone who existed and had influence but who's true story was lost to the ages.

      There is proof he existed. He was defended in several non religious sources that had no reason to side with Christianity. The question is if he had powers or not

    • @ProfesserLuigi
      @ProfesserLuigi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The idea that Christian beliefs about Jesus is only legend is not entirely sound mainly because the source of what they believe about Jesus, the four gospels(Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) from the Bible, are not written in the way that legends are typically written. We see that, particularly in the book of Luke, that they were, or at least were written as, eye-witness accounts or compilations of accounts of Jesus's life. They are written not as artistic stories meant to merely awe and inspire followers, but simply to tell what happened. This is evident by the lack of legend-like structure and the superfluous and unexplained details included in the gospels. For example, there is the story of the adulteress brought before Jesus (from which originated the phrase "let him without sin cast the first stone"). In it, it describes Jesus suddenly kneeling down and writing on the ground. If it were a legend, there surely would be some explaination of the significance of the act, but there is none. The practice of putting in useless details to make a story more realistic was not done in any writings contemporary of that time, yet thr gospels are filled with these details. The only other explaination is that someone gave an account of what they saw happen and nothing more.
      Since it is written like a firsthand account, we must then assume that was how the story was given when the church first started in Jerusalem
      This means that those who first heard it, among them being people who saw Jesus himself if his fame was remotely what the gospels detail, would have heard the story as eye-witness accounts. They would have been the first to notice if the original tellers of the story had added in that Jesus claimed to be God if he never did. At best, those telling the story would have been laughed at, or they would have been killed or beaten at worst. However, we read and see in history that, not only did people believe them, but that the christian movement exploded from there. It must be that Jesus really did make that claim, and so we are reduced to only the three L's.

    One thing I don’t really like about Jesus’s portrayal in media and even in black Jesus is that he stands out too much. Jesus was such an average looking guy that the Pharisee’s had no idea who to arrest because they didn’t know which one of the 13 most typical looking Jewish guys in the room was the messiah. Which is why they needed Judas to kiss him so they could know who to arrest.

    The devil took everything from Job not God. If Job had of came to God in the first place a lot of the bad things would not have happened, but it took him all the way to ch37 -38 to even speak with the Lord, before then he was only talking about himself. After he spoke to the Lord God was able to save him, before them Job was so focused on claiming the he himself (Job) was righteousness in everything that he did, but it was to the contrary and satan used that against him.

    • @twilightsparkle75
      @twilightsparkle75 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i remember reading it as satan talkimg to god saying that if God's believers were stricken with suffering and strife they would no longer believe or even blame god. god refused that poimt and as a way to prove it allowed satan to attack on of his well off believers to the point of near death to see if they would turn away and do it slowly to see at what point would strife be too much to continue to have faith

    • @aarontheruler
      @aarontheruler ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The devil took everything from Job because God gave him direct permission to do so as a test of Job’s faith. Job didn’t come to God about it, he waited until God came to him “in a whirlwind” (look it up) because that’s the entire point of the story: it was God’s Will for his life at that time to become afflicted, and Job *accepted* that.
      The only reason Job “claimed he himself was righteous” as you say was because he was trying to rationalize with his friends and figure out why this stuff was happening to him, as any human would.

    The Gospel Jesus drank wine and hung out with whores/paupers. He was certainly far from the sanitized American image of his Holiness and he wouldn't have made the waves he did if it was. The problem is how modern Christians are detached from any idea of Christianity as the homegrown cult that grew from Jerusalem. They have become the Senecas and the Neros of the era, the type more willing to conform to the stereotypes of the world and persecute the weak because that is what society mandates. Society is inherently against figures like Jesus because they preach a message that is equally against their world, and thus when Jesus became incorporated into society the "message" had to become sanitized. It had to conform to society when it clear as day meant to usurp it.

    • @melissaherrera940
      @melissaherrera940 ปีที่แล้ว

      If more people realized that Jesus would’ve stood by groups that were persecuted by “modern American Christians”, I feel like more people would find real comfort in his teachings as opposed to associate it with pain. But alas, that idea falls on deaf ears to everyone these days.

    Oh wow i never saw the show this way, i still think its not a show for me(I am still in the stigma of it being blasphemous to depict jesus as a seemling aloof person) but this made realize how much deeper the thought was in the entire series.
    I thought it was just a atheist joke series used to cut down the Christian religion when I saw them all sitting around smoking and cursing and now I feel like I jumped to conclusions.
    I would definitely watch a version without the lords name being taking in vein and bleeped cursing (which would probably take away some charm)
    But overall if I come across this again I think I can have a better attitude about it now.

    • @TheStorytellerAJ
      @TheStorytellerAJ  6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I can understand that perception. I initially felt the exact same way. Honestly, it's alittle much at first glance, and I'll openly admit to that. But, it's a really clever show with a really simple mask. Even small things like Fish, Jesus' right hand man, being a reference to Peter, who was a fisherman. The doubter who in the end, stood by Jesus' side to the very end when his faith was tested.
      Another key aspect of the show I love is how it uses the garden from Season 1, in order to symbolize ones relationship with God. Jesus tells the crew to invest time into making the garden, and after one set back, they essentially start to lose faith. Cause' God hasn't provided results when you want them to come, you start all that hatin' and begin to doubt.
      This is referenced in the video where Fish goes off on Jesus for God not providing when he wanted him to, not being able to appreciate the fact that they still have vegetables. Aaron did something very similar with The Boondocks in how he tackled the idea of God there. Your relationship with God is not a matter of praying, and just hoping things will get better. It's about working on, and towards the things you desire, and maintaining faith even when the world leads you to doubt. Miracles manifest themselves in crazy ways, after all.
      The final scene from Black Jesus I play in this video is where Jesus talks to this kid about how you're supposed to treat a garden, and it was designed as this clever way of discussing one's relationship with God. It's a small way of looking at religion, but essentially, Aaron presents this idea that we need to work hard to make miracles for ourselves, and not just blindly wait for the "garden" (that being God) to provide results for us.
      God is like a garden. Regardless of how he got there, or its significance as a whole. It doesn't move, unless you do. You need to put the effort in to see the results. And, you always have to remember that God moves at his own pace and works in mysterious ways. "He blesses us with struggle, cause' it makes us stronger. It's a test of faith."
