I am 100% a fashion person, and I have quit fast fashion. BUT I struggle to find things second hand in my size. So what do I do? I make my own clothes. Sewing, crochet, knitting, and embroidery are my biggest hobbies. I spend a few weeks to months making a single item. I'm currently working on my new chunky cable sweater and a fall skirt. Making my own clothes means that 1. they fit me, 2 I like them enough to spend that long making them, 3. I repair and repair and repair because I spent so long making my clothes I want them to last. The colour palette is VERY IMPORTANT. Mine is black, brown, pumpkin orange, forest-y and moss-y greens, and cream (seen in knits and lace trim). My pops of other colours come from for example my knitted knee highs that at rainbow, or other fun accessories. Perhaps embroidery on my clothes. My goal is for 80% of my wardrobe to be handmade and the other 20% be either what I now have which has lasted, thrifted, or sustainable brands in the next 5 years. I find having such a variety of hobbies that all work together in this way can not only fill my free time but end in a gorgeous one of a kind piece (even if it's from a pattern) which I will love and cherish.
Do you shop on Poshmark/Vinted/threadUp/Depop? That’s my preferred way to shop secondhand. It’s so much easier to find items that way than traditional thrift store shopping. At least for me, it takes the anxiety out of thrifting!
@@alexmcginness8859 I have tried all fo those places but I am a size 20-24 US or 2x-3x in most articles of clothing and truly there are so few options on these sites. It's even harder where I have a very clear vision of my style. Luckily I LOVE sewing! It is one of my number one hobbies - so it just makes sense for me to making my own clothes.

(she lived a happy live and was 93) But as we started decluttering the house, i found a beautiful wintercoat (its over 50 years old!) so its is my new wintercoat, and al the family loved that i wanted to have it☺️ I also took about a 100 Candles home, nobody wanted them and they wanted to trow them away, so I guess I’ll have enough candles for the next 5 winters😅 (don’t burn candles much, but couldn’t let them be trown out)
I was so sad, when my dad gifted me a new phone and it wasn't second hand. When my old phone was breaking it was shortly before my birthday and so my dad decided to gift me one. I begged him to buy one second hand but he didn't. Of course I was thankful that he bought a phone in general because I was just starting my work life and had not much money at that point, but still. My tablet is bought second hand and my computer is made from pieces that were supposed to be discarded. A friend a working in IT and is responsible for their tech. They need to strong and fast computer, so they change parts of them each couple of years. Her boss doesn't care if the things will be discarded or reused, so over a year she collected everything she needed to build me one.
It's so refreshing to hear someone be honest about cookbooks! They always catch my eye in shops and remind me of looking through my mom's cookbooks growing up, but it's true that I tend to leave them behind when I move since it's so much easier to Google! I've just started a document (searchable!!) of all my fav recipes.
I've started a physical cookbook with an old journal where I write down all the recipes I've tried and I know are good, I'll often find them online and tweak them to suit me(or take photos of cookbooks) and then handwrite them out so I know every page of the book is a recipe I'll actually use! I also found a basic notes app that I use everytime I find a recipe online and just save the link in there for future reference 🙂
6:13 I buy candles that are locally made from the wax leftover of soy products, by disabled workers. I stumbled upon it at a Christmas market in Limoges (France), they produce very little to no smoke, they’re natural and not from bee’s wax. Feel good all the way!

I use candles in my spiritual practice so for me I do still buy them. I don’t try to overbuy them, but every once in a while I do. I try to buy soy based or beeswax candles so they’re better for the environment. No bath and body works for me, lol. But I agree with you that it’s a personal thing.
My only perfume has lasted me for 3 years now and I'm coming on my three-and-a-half-year mark and I'm eyeing another bottle of it and it's $150 and I'm thinking... do I need this? No. Do I want it? YES! So I'm going to keep it on my list for another 3 months and see if I still want it. But yes you don't need perfumes🤗
the thing about low waste is that as long as you are putting in an effort to be mindful of your waste you are doing it correctly. if you’re saying that the perfume lasted you that long i yes clearly a good purchase. Maybe you can find a store that refills perfumes bottles for a discounted price over you purchasing a new bottle for the perfume. if not you can absolutely find a new use for the bottle, wether it be decorative and as a place to hold things in. nonetheless, i saw it’s ok to buy things you enjoy, this is a lifestyle not a restriction to your life

One of my pet peeves since trying to be more sustainable is how MANY conversations with people are centered around something they bought, or something they need to buy to make their life better. I have curly hair. Parallel to zero waste movement, I discovered that shampoo doesn't make any good to my hair. It's so much defined and beautiful now! Also, I wash it 2 (sometimes 3) times a week, not more - if more, it stays dim and not so curly. Talking with other friends that have my type of hair they totally agree with me and are happy for "discovering" this. For skincare I use the same creme all over my body made by a natural producer I know personally, but I suppose that's of no help ;)
Im the same way with mailing/package items! I have a whole dresser drawer full of boxes, little bags, tissue paper, containers, etc. Any time I receive a gift I save the box it came in and now I have this magical drawer for gift giving. ✨✨✨
I love the colour palette thing for your wardrobe! I’ve found my palette: white, dark green and blush. A little bit of gray and navy blue as well for summer time (wild). These colours work so well with my skin and look nice together. Makes it super easy to select new pieces when something needs replacing!

Same here! No trendy skin care or makeup, or perfumes. My skin is delicate and light soap and moisturizer are all I use. (And heavy scents also attract mosquitos to me! )

It’s ridiculous what a “revolutionary” thing not upgrading your phone is. I’ve had the original iphone SE for 5 years now, and it still works just as well as it did on day one, so why would I need to replace it. Yet I keep getting comments from people with their iphone 27s about just how “funny” it is that I still have a “grandma’s phone” with such a “tiny” screen. Like... why is that funny?

Immy I am almost 44 and the best thing to do for your skin is to wear sunscreen everyday and for the rest leave your skin the f..ck alone:) as much as possible. So yes minimal skin care and only what you need! My skin is lovely and I only cleanse with a face wash every morning and splash some water in the evening + use sunscreen as day cream everyday (SPF50 in spring and summer and SPF30 in autumn/winter). I started this type of skin care when I was 27 years old and because of skin cancer risks in my specific case. But I am happy about it because I have almost no wrinkles or blemishes and look in my thirties (also have a healthy life style and diet but still). All the 7 step skin routines etc are a bit bollocks in my opinion and a way to make you buy more and expensive items (PS I have had severe acne as a teenager so I am not someone with a naturally good skin!)
Totally agree with you - it's funny because every expert online says that these routines are all made redundant if we don't wear SPF everyday... so it definitely seems to be the best! I do use a few other things like cleanser and moisturiser but those are my 3 staples for sure! Thanks for your input, it's always appreciated xx
I don't use my phone as a computer (often), and I don't use the phone that much anyway, so I kept my number, cancelled my contract, and picked up with a prepaid phone service for a fraction of the price I used to pay.

Some time ago I were in an instrument shop and I found a concert ukulele with great sound. I love second hand shopping! We're in lockdown for weeks now and I bought basics made out of bamboo so that I can extend the life of the clothing I already have. Ie. A shirt that had become see-through with wear is now ok with a tank top underneath 😊

I have very dry sensitive skin so I'm hesitant to try new products but wanted to reduce my plastic packaging .I've discovered 2 excellent Utube channels ( WholeElise an Humblebee and Me) which cover making personal care products. I've managed to may a face moisturiser that I don't react to and a solid shampoo bar for my very dry curly hair. I also make deodorant, body lotion and leave in hair conditioner.
I bought a second-hand winter coat back in the 90s, so it's at least 25 years old. Still wearing it! Washes like a dream. To be fair, it was like brand new when I got it for $30! The only problem is that I'm heartily sick of it!! LOL It's a tan colour and I would really like something a little more colourful to brighten those dreary winter days. I always look, but haven't found anything to replace it yet. I figure 25 years is long enough, don't ya think? :D
Hey Jemma… I bought my winter coat in1987 when I moved up north for my first teaching job (I’m still here, and still teaching). It is such an amazing coat… I think I would call it a winter parka, and it has features that I never even thought about at the time of the purchase. The hood zips off, it has a nice warm closure around the neck, it has a big 2 way chunky zipper for the front closure that can be zipped up with mittens on (cuz we 🇨🇦ians spend our winters wearing mittens or gloves), and it is so warm. BUT… the best feature is that it has 2 huge pockets on the inside, one on each side that holds my mittens and toque etc. The colour is “eggplant” on the outside, and “teal’ on the inside… very 1980’s 😂. It’s an MEC coat, and I think I will have it forever. One of my best-ever purchases. I hope you come up with a solution for your winter coat blahs.
Jemma, I bought a Tommy Hilfiger winter coat 11 years ago and it's still very good and warm. But I have the same "problem" as you: nowadays I would buy another color and I am a bit sick of the coat. But sofar I haven't been able to donate or sell the coat because I have a hard time letting go of a quality item just because it's not longer 100% my taste. So the result is the coat doesnt spark joy anymore (as Marie Kondo says) but it still hangs in my attic and I wear it when it's really cold.....Yesterday I was considering why I have such a hard time getting rid of things that are still good and functional and I think it is because of my upbringing and childhood of not having much money and being frugal. At the same time when you have had a coat for so many years it has served its purpose for you quite well and maybe you can make someone else happy with it? What I did was buying another winter coat a few years ago and rotating the coats (as a transition method I guess:). But I don't know if that's an option space and moneywise for you.

It is black with a hood, very warm. I have kept it for those extra cold days. It's a little dressier than my other one, but also bulkier, so doesn't work well with a backpack, which I need as a pedestrian (I have no car). I hardly ever wear it, because winters have not been as cold here. I have debated letting it go, but haven't quite been able to. It's a 'what if' coat. LOL So, if I ever find my perfect coat, I can let go of both my current ones. :D
Knowing oneself is the best thing to do to be sustainable and save money. You get to understand your behaviour patterns and what you do and do not actually like. That way you're less likely to fall for the trap of new, ✨flashy✨ stuff! Loved the video as always! I'm with you on all of these. I am on a no-buy year and so only buying necessities. This is year 3 of not buying things that aren't a need. It has changed my habits, finances and thought processes. When I do NEED something, I buy second hand for almost everything (furniture, clothing, housewares, etc).
Tech is soo bad, both in terms of environmental damage and unethical work conditions. I’m proud of myself for not having bought new tech in a very long time (got my iPhone secondhand 5 years ago!) but I start working at a company as a software developer soon and there it’s completely normal to get new phones and computers every TWO YEARS 😰 I hope I can refuse that and just keep using my tech as long as possible 😕
My last laptop lasted 10 years. I held on to it as long as i could but it was Windows 7 and they no longer have the updates. I bought a new one last year and I hope I can go another 10 years with it. With phones it's way worse, either the battery says goodbye or you no longer have storage even with 1 single app (happened to me with my last phone). I wish household appliances and tech lasted longer, but they are designed to make people buy more.
Lovely video, I do many of the same things as you so nice to hear there are kindred spirits, so many things in life we just don't need, or don't need new! I love minimalism. I have a funny relationship with minimalism and 0 waste living as my mum is a hoarder who survived being a child refugee who had nothing. So she likes to have material things around her because it makes her feel safe. She buys way too much but ironically throws away very little. I have no judgement if people do impulse buy or collect things, there are so many reasons we do this, but I definitely personally feel freer and know I'm doing right by the environment being minimal. I buy way less clothing new. I have a small private owned thrift store above my office and i find very good stuff every few weeks. Its thrilling to not know whats coming in and i'll find anything on that day. Its like a Schnitzeljagd 😄 I also just redone my outgoing purse, its a gift i got years ago, the purse was made with fake leather that crumbled very badly and i took it apart and tried to fix it, its unique now 😄
@@marymanning5150 Have you seen those orangey-pink chunks of rock that glow? They are actually a big chunk of Himalayan pink rock salt which is mounted on a flat wooden base. They have been drilled out in the centre to make space for a small clear light bulb. When they are plugged in they give a soft orange glow... that’s a salt lamp. The salt attract negative particles so they cleanse the air around them. They have become very popular in the past 5 - 10 years. 🌎💦Ⓜ️ary
Any recommendations for active wear? It's one area I don't see much secondhand options for/ dont know how that would feel and the ethical ones are so pricy! But then the cheaper ones are sure to be fast fashion/have micro plastics )): But as a runner I'd like to have a few on hand rather than being minimal in that part so I don't need to keep washing etc
One thing I have found that has helped with active wear is buying it through consignment shops or over apps like Depop compared to thrift stores. I would also recommend knowing your size in a few different brands so you can scoop them up immediately when you come across them.
I have really enjoyed my pieces from Girlfriend Collective. I only buy when they are having a sale, but they are less expensive than designer active wear brands. They have held up so well, and they're cute!
i tend to save and then buy pieces from lululemon and sweaty betty. yes they are pricey, but most of my lululemon pieces are over 8 years old, and still look great. you can go to the store and get the stitching redone for free as well. so yes they are expensive but they last such a long time that i dont need to buy pieces all of the time. and i go to the gym 6 days a week. \
I am using a safety razor, but also I have a Gillette that I buy just the razor refills. honestly the safety razor isn't working when it comes to my legs....darn it

I love having a colour palette, especially for all of my basics. It makes deciding on outfits easier too, because every top works with every bottom and then you have multiple outfit options with less items overall. I used to have way too many special occasion clothing items.
I'd be really interested to hear how people go on holiday with a razor - I'm travelling soon and safety razors are not allowed in hand luggage, but disposable razors are (as their blade is not removable)?
Depends where/how long you're going on holiday, but I've brought my safety razor with me on airplanes just without the blades. I always end up having to take it out and take it apart to show them it doesn't have any blades, but they've been fine with it. Then I just buy some blades wherever I'm going. Not the easiest solution for shorter trips I guess. I also had it one time that I had the blade separate in the wrapper, forgotten in a pocket in my toiletries bag, and didn't I discover it until I got to my destination - it's not the kind of shape that shows up on their scans. Oops! Wouldn't do that again.
My friends and family make fun of me for dressing like a cartoon character because I've strictly adhered to the same 3 colors since I was a kid lol! It didn't even start off as a sustainability thing - just an aesthetic thing. But now I pride myself on wearing the same outfits over and over and not buying anything new. I also thought I was a candle person and realized I didn't like them. I have 2 that just sit as decoration but I never light them.

Hello! I suggest looking at providers like Giff Gaff - they buy used phones, refurbish them and then sell them sim-free on their website, sometimes for a fraction of the usual price. Some brands like Apple do this too. I would say this is the safest way to do it in the UK. I would never buy a phone from ebay etc.
Can not agree more about purses and candles! Before I began my minimalist journey, I had so many cheap and cute purses that never got used, and the ones that did get used would get worn out quickly because they were cheap. Now I invest in high quality bags and limit it to one bag per occasion/use. As for candles, hands down I was influenced by TH-camrs in the 2010s era where all the big fashion/beauty youtubers had a candle burning in the background of their videos. I have a sensitive nose, why did I think the overpowering scent of candles would be a good idea? 🤦♀️

I have a question! :) You mentioned your mom buys a lot online...how do you deal with parents or friends who are still heavily into consumerism or maximalism? I find it difficult to explain to my mom how to not only buy eco-friendly but also just buy less!
Great question! Tbh it depends on where people are coming from - I have friends who grew up really wealthy but are very cognisant of not buying too much, spending wisely and being frugal, then you have my mum who grew up extremely poor and buys a lot now because she can and I can't really judge her for that. But she also has wonderful attitudes towards repairing everything, selling her old clothes on ebay, buying from her local farm shop, knitting sweaters for her grandchildren... so in some ways habits all even out but at the end of the day I would always try to lead by example!
You could never get a plan that cheap in Canada, I always buy my phone outright and my phone plan is $60 cad and most people think that's cheap. We dont have any safe ways to buy 2nd hand tech here, people get ripped off all the time or sell it to you then report it stolen. Its such a gamble and if the tech is expensive, hard to make that purchase, hopefully something comes up but until then I use my tech until it literally craps out.
Buying tech second hand from some random stranger is never a good idea. But there are actually a lot of companies nowadays that sell refurbished tech (they check if everything works and replace any broken parts) and will give you a warranty for it. Some brands (e.g. Apple) actually sell refurbished products themselves on their official website with the same service and warranty you'd get for a brand new item.

We have a lot of these kind of contracts in Germany. Nearly every time you choose a contract instead of a prepaid simcard they give you a new Phone every 2 Years.
*As a minimalist, I have learnt that saving is a good thing, thank God I learnt frugal life on time. Well , last year I saved over 100k off things I do not need. I then invested the money into Crypto(through the assistance and supervision of an investment adviser of course) and made a 400k ROI this year . This crypto thing is really becoming a trend and it has really made a lot of people rich .They FED can’t stop it no matter how hard they’ve been trying. I was skeptical at first about it and that had been my biggest regret, if not ,I would have probably been a millionaire by now . Regardless, I’m glad I began last year and so far , I have made a couple of thousands from it . Although , I wished I had started it 4 years ago when I first heard of it .

I got rid of my buying too many clothes just because they don't cost much by choosing my favourite clothing brand (which is NOT cheap) and deciding I will never buy other brands of clothes. Since prices are not that affordable, I will buy clothes only when I truly need new ones. It works. (also, I must thank the pandemic for making me stop using make up, another thing I won't buy anymore. XD)

Making my own clothes means that 1. they fit me, 2 I like them enough to spend that long making them, 3. I repair and repair and repair because I spent so long making my clothes I want them to last.
The colour palette is VERY IMPORTANT. Mine is black, brown, pumpkin orange, forest-y and moss-y greens, and cream (seen in knits and lace trim). My pops of other colours come from for example my knitted knee highs that at rainbow, or other fun accessories. Perhaps embroidery on my clothes. My goal is for 80% of my wardrobe to be handmade and the other 20% be either what I now have which has lasted, thrifted, or sustainable brands in the next 5 years.
I find having such a variety of hobbies that all work together in this way can not only fill my free time but end in a gorgeous one of a kind piece (even if it's from a pattern) which I will love and cherish.
Do you shop on Poshmark/Vinted/threadUp/Depop? That’s my preferred way to shop secondhand. It’s so much easier to find items that way than traditional thrift store shopping. At least for me, it takes the anxiety out of thrifting!
@@alexmcginness8859 I have tried all fo those places but I am a size 20-24 US or 2x-3x in most articles of clothing and truly there are so few options on these sites. It's even harder where I have a very clear vision of my style. Luckily I LOVE sewing! It is one of my number one hobbies - so it just makes sense for me to making my own clothes.

(she lived a happy live and was 93) But as we started decluttering the house, i found a beautiful wintercoat (its over 50 years old!) so its is my new wintercoat, and al the family loved that i wanted to have it☺️ I also took about a 100 Candles home, nobody wanted them and they wanted to trow them away, so I guess I’ll have enough candles for the next 5 winters😅 (don’t burn candles much, but couldn’t let them be trown out)

I was so sad, when my dad gifted me a new phone and it wasn't second hand. When my old phone was breaking it was shortly before my birthday and so my dad decided to gift me one. I begged him to buy one second hand but he didn't. Of course I was thankful that he bought a phone in general because I was just starting my work life and had not much money at that point, but still. My tablet is bought second hand and my computer is made from pieces that were supposed to be discarded. A friend a working in IT and is responsible for their tech. They need to strong and fast computer, so they change parts of them each couple of years. Her boss doesn't care if the things will be discarded or reused, so over a year she collected everything she needed to build me one.
It's so refreshing to hear someone be honest about cookbooks! They always catch my eye in shops and remind me of looking through my mom's cookbooks growing up, but it's true that I tend to leave them behind when I move since it's so much easier to Google! I've just started a document (searchable!!) of all my fav recipes.
I've started a physical cookbook with an old journal where I write down all the recipes I've tried and I know are good, I'll often find them online and tweak them to suit me(or take photos of cookbooks) and then handwrite them out so I know every page of the book is a recipe I'll actually use!
I also found a basic notes app that I use everytime I find a recipe online and just save the link in there for future reference 🙂
6:13 I buy candles that are locally made from the wax leftover of soy products, by disabled workers. I stumbled upon it at a Christmas market in Limoges (France), they produce very little to no smoke, they’re natural and not from bee’s wax. Feel good all the way!

I use candles in my spiritual practice so for me I do still buy them. I don’t try to overbuy them, but every once in a while I do. I try to buy soy based or beeswax candles so they’re better for the environment. No bath and body works for me, lol. But I agree with you that it’s a personal thing.
My only perfume has lasted me for 3 years now and I'm coming on my three-and-a-half-year mark and I'm eyeing another bottle of it and it's $150 and I'm thinking... do I need this? No. Do I want it? YES! So I'm going to keep it on my list for another 3 months and see if I still want it. But yes you don't need perfumes🤗
the thing about low waste is that as long as you are putting in an effort to be mindful of your waste you are doing it correctly. if you’re saying that the perfume lasted you that long i yes clearly a good purchase. Maybe you can find a store that refills perfumes bottles for a discounted price over you purchasing a new bottle for the perfume. if not you can absolutely find a new use for the bottle, wether it be decorative and as a place to hold things in. nonetheless, i saw it’s ok to buy things you enjoy, this is a lifestyle not a restriction to your life

I have curly hair. Parallel to zero waste movement, I discovered that shampoo doesn't make any good to my hair. It's so much defined and beautiful now! Also, I wash it 2 (sometimes 3) times a week, not more - if more, it stays dim and not so curly. Talking with other friends that have my type of hair they totally agree with me and are happy for "discovering" this.
For skincare I use the same creme all over my body made by a natural producer I know personally, but I suppose that's of no help ;)
Im the same way with mailing/package items! I have a whole dresser drawer full of boxes, little bags, tissue paper, containers, etc. Any time I receive a gift I save the box it came in and now I have this magical drawer for gift giving. ✨✨✨

I love the colour palette thing for your wardrobe! I’ve found my palette: white, dark green and blush. A little bit of gray and navy blue as well for summer time (wild). These colours work so well with my skin and look nice together. Makes it super easy to select new pieces when something needs replacing!

Same here! No trendy skin care or makeup, or perfumes. My skin is delicate and light soap and moisturizer are all I use. (And heavy scents also attract mosquitos to me! )

Plant milk is one challenge for my family of five because so far I have not made one all three kids like 🙁
Immy I am almost 44 and the best thing to do for your skin is to wear sunscreen everyday and for the rest leave your skin the f..ck alone:) as much as possible. So yes minimal skin care and only what you need! My skin is lovely and I only cleanse with a face wash every morning and splash some water in the evening + use sunscreen as day cream everyday (SPF50 in spring and summer and SPF30 in autumn/winter). I started this type of skin care when I was 27 years old and because of skin cancer risks in my specific case. But I am happy about it because I have almost no wrinkles or blemishes and look in my thirties (also have a healthy life style and diet but still). All the 7 step skin routines etc are a bit bollocks in my opinion and a way to make you buy more and expensive items (PS I have had severe acne as a teenager so I am not someone with a naturally good skin!)
Totally agree with you - it's funny because every expert online says that these routines are all made redundant if we don't wear SPF everyday... so it definitely seems to be the best! I do use a few other things like cleanser and moisturiser but those are my 3 staples for sure! Thanks for your input, it's always appreciated xx

I don't use my phone as a computer (often), and I don't use the phone that much anyway, so I kept my number, cancelled my contract, and picked up with a prepaid phone service for a fraction of the price I used to pay.
The phone thing is such a trap I fall into. Every three years I get a new. Going forward I’m going for five years.
It also helps to buy phones with bigger storage. I use a lot of apps and have lots of data and phones with bigger storage last me longer!
I had my last phone for over 4 years before it broke and couldn’t be repaired so I got a new one 😂 I used to be the same I wanted a new one every year or 2

I have very dry sensitive skin so I'm hesitant to try new products but wanted to reduce my plastic packaging .I've discovered 2 excellent Utube channels ( WholeElise an Humblebee and Me) which cover making personal care products. I've managed to may a face moisturiser that I don't react to and a solid shampoo bar for my very dry curly hair. I also make deodorant, body lotion and leave in hair conditioner.

I bought a second-hand winter coat back in the 90s, so it's at least 25 years old. Still wearing it! Washes like a dream. To be fair, it was like brand new when I got it for $30! The only problem is that I'm heartily sick of it!! LOL It's a tan colour and I would really like something a little more colourful to brighten those dreary winter days. I always look, but haven't found anything to replace it yet. I figure 25 years is long enough, don't ya think? :D

Hey Jemma… I bought my winter coat in1987 when I moved up north for my first teaching job (I’m still here, and still teaching). It is such an amazing coat… I think I would call it a winter parka, and it has features that I never even thought about at the time of the purchase. The hood zips off, it has a nice warm closure around the neck, it has a big 2 way chunky zipper for the front closure that can be zipped up with mittens on (cuz we 🇨🇦ians spend our winters wearing mittens or gloves), and it is so warm. BUT… the best feature is that it has 2 huge pockets on the inside, one on each side that holds my mittens and toque etc. The colour is “eggplant” on the outside, and “teal’ on the inside… very 1980’s 😂. It’s an MEC coat, and I think I will have it forever. One of my best-ever purchases. I hope you come up with a solution for your winter coat blahs.
Jemma, I bought a Tommy Hilfiger winter coat 11 years ago and it's still very good and warm. But I have the same "problem" as you: nowadays I would buy another color and I am a bit sick of the coat. But sofar I haven't been able to donate or sell the coat because I have a hard time letting go of a quality item just because it's not longer 100% my taste. So the result is the coat doesnt spark joy anymore (as Marie Kondo says) but it still hangs in my attic and I wear it when it's really cold.....Yesterday I was considering why I have such a hard time getting rid of things that are still good and functional and I think it is because of my upbringing and childhood of not having much money and being frugal. At the same time when you have had a coat for so many years it has served its purpose for you quite well and maybe you can make someone else happy with it? What I did was buying another winter coat a few years ago and rotating the coats (as a transition method I guess:). But I don't know if that's an option space and moneywise for you.

It is black with a hood, very warm. I have kept it for those extra cold days. It's a little dressier than my other one, but also bulkier, so doesn't work well with a backpack, which I need as a pedestrian (I have no car). I hardly ever wear it, because winters have not been as cold here. I have debated letting it go, but haven't quite been able to. It's a 'what if' coat. LOL So, if I ever find my perfect coat, I can let go of both my current ones. :D
Knowing oneself is the best thing to do to be sustainable and save money. You get to understand your behaviour patterns and what you do and do not actually like. That way you're less likely to fall for the trap of new, ✨flashy✨ stuff!

I'm with you on all of these. I am on a no-buy year and so only buying necessities. This is year 3 of not buying things that aren't a need. It has changed my habits, finances and thought processes. When I do NEED something, I buy second hand for almost everything (furniture, clothing, housewares, etc).
Tech is soo bad, both in terms of environmental damage and unethical work conditions. I’m proud of myself for not having bought new tech in a very long time (got my iPhone secondhand 5 years ago!) but I start working at a company as a software developer soon and there it’s completely normal to get new phones and computers every TWO YEARS 😰 I hope I can refuse that and just keep using my tech as long as possible 😕
My last laptop lasted 10 years. I held on to it as long as i could but it was Windows 7 and they no longer have the updates. I bought a new one last year and I hope I can go another 10 years with it. With phones it's way worse, either the battery says goodbye or you no longer have storage even with 1 single app (happened to me with my last phone). I wish household appliances and tech lasted longer, but they are designed to make people buy more.

Lovely video, I do many of the same things as you so nice to hear there are kindred spirits, so many things in life we just don't need, or don't need new! I love minimalism. I have a funny relationship with minimalism and 0 waste living as my mum is a hoarder who survived being a child refugee who had nothing. So she likes to have material things around her because it makes her feel safe. She buys way too much but ironically throws away very little. I have no judgement if people do impulse buy or collect things, there are so many reasons we do this, but I definitely personally feel freer and know I'm doing right by the environment being minimal. I buy way less clothing new. I have a small private owned thrift store above my office and i find very good stuff every few weeks. Its thrilling to not know whats coming in and i'll find anything on that day. Its like a Schnitzeljagd 😄 I also just redone my outgoing purse, its a gift i got years ago, the purse was made with fake leather that crumbled very badly and i took it apart and tried to fix it, its unique now 😄

@@marymanning5150 Have you seen those orangey-pink chunks of rock that glow? They are actually a big chunk of Himalayan pink rock salt which is mounted on a flat wooden base. They have been drilled out in the centre to make space for a small clear light bulb. When they are plugged in they give a soft orange glow... that’s a salt lamp. The salt attract negative particles so they cleanse the air around them. They have become very popular in the past 5 - 10 years. 🌎💦Ⓜ️ary
Any recommendations for active wear? It's one area I don't see much secondhand options for/ dont know how that would feel and the ethical ones are so pricy! But then the cheaper ones are sure to be fast fashion/have micro plastics )): But as a runner I'd like to have a few on hand rather than being minimal in that part so I don't need to keep washing etc
One thing I have found that has helped with active wear is buying it through consignment shops or over apps like Depop compared to thrift stores. I would also recommend knowing your size in a few different brands so you can scoop them up immediately when you come across them.
I have really enjoyed my pieces from Girlfriend Collective. I only buy when they are having a sale, but they are less expensive than designer active wear brands. They have held up so well, and they're cute!

i tend to save and then buy pieces from lululemon and sweaty betty. yes they are pricey, but most of my lululemon pieces are over 8 years old, and still look great. you can go to the store and get the stitching redone for free as well. so yes they are expensive but they last such a long time that i dont need to buy pieces all of the time. and i go to the gym 6 days a week. \

I love having a colour palette, especially for all of my basics. It makes deciding on outfits easier too, because every top works with every bottom and then you have multiple outfit options with less items overall. I used to have way too many special occasion clothing items.

I'd be really interested to hear how people go on holiday with a razor - I'm travelling soon and safety razors are not allowed in hand luggage, but disposable razors are (as their blade is not removable)?
Depends where/how long you're going on holiday, but I've brought my safety razor with me on airplanes just without the blades. I always end up having to take it out and take it apart to show them it doesn't have any blades, but they've been fine with it. Then I just buy some blades wherever I'm going. Not the easiest solution for shorter trips I guess. I also had it one time that I had the blade separate in the wrapper, forgotten in a pocket in my toiletries bag, and didn't I discover it until I got to my destination - it's not the kind of shape that shows up on their scans. Oops! Wouldn't do that again.
My friends and family make fun of me for dressing like a cartoon character because I've strictly adhered to the same 3 colors since I was a kid lol! It didn't even start off as a sustainability thing - just an aesthetic thing. But now I pride myself on wearing the same outfits over and over and not buying anything new. I also thought I was a candle person and realized I didn't like them. I have 2 that just sit as decoration but I never light them.

Hello! I suggest looking at providers like Giff Gaff - they buy used phones, refurbish them and then sell them sim-free on their website, sometimes for a fraction of the usual price. Some brands like Apple do this too. I would say this is the safest way to do it in the UK. I would never buy a phone from ebay etc.

Before I began my minimalist journey, I had so many cheap and cute purses that never got used, and the ones that did get used would get worn out quickly because they were cheap. Now I invest in high quality bags and limit it to one bag per occasion/use.
As for candles, hands down I was influenced by TH-camrs in the 2010s era where all the big fashion/beauty youtubers had a candle burning in the background of their videos. I have a sensitive nose, why did I think the overpowering scent of candles would be a good idea? 🤦♀️

I have a question! :) You mentioned your mom buys a lot online...how do you deal with parents or friends who are still heavily into consumerism or maximalism? I find it difficult to explain to my mom how to not only buy eco-friendly but also just buy less!
Great question! Tbh it depends on where people are coming from - I have friends who grew up really wealthy but are very cognisant of not buying too much, spending wisely and being frugal, then you have my mum who grew up extremely poor and buys a lot now because she can and I can't really judge her for that. But she also has wonderful attitudes towards repairing everything, selling her old clothes on ebay, buying from her local farm shop, knitting sweaters for her grandchildren... so in some ways habits all even out but at the end of the day I would always try to lead by example!
You could never get a plan that cheap in Canada, I always buy my phone outright and my phone plan is $60 cad and most people think that's cheap. We dont have any safe ways to buy 2nd hand tech here, people get ripped off all the time or sell it to you then report it stolen. Its such a gamble and if the tech is expensive, hard to make that purchase, hopefully something comes up but until then I use my tech until it literally craps out.
Buying tech second hand from some random stranger is never a good idea. But there are actually a lot of companies nowadays that sell refurbished tech (they check if everything works and replace any broken parts) and will give you a warranty for it. Some brands (e.g. Apple) actually sell refurbished products themselves on their official website with the same service and warranty you'd get for a brand new item.
@@inspiredby624 Ive brought a few items refurnished for sure but it wasnt that much cheaper then the regular ones but I hear other countries being able to easily buy second hand tech, just jealous is all and hope we have those options soon

We have a lot of these kind of contracts in Germany. Nearly every time you choose a contract instead of a prepaid simcard they give you a new Phone every 2 Years.

*As a minimalist, I have learnt that saving is a good thing, thank God I learnt frugal life on time. Well , last year I saved over 100k off things I do not need. I then invested the money into Crypto(through the assistance and supervision of an investment adviser of course) and made a 400k ROI this year . Well I would love to say that; as a minimalist I had realized , it’s a good thing Saving but it’s best saving through investment as it’s helps grow your money and leaves you with a good portfolio as well*
This crypto thing is really becoming a trend and it has really made a lot of people rich .They FED can’t stop it no matter how hard they’ve been trying. I was skeptical at first about it and that had been my biggest regret, if not ,I would have probably been a millionaire by now . Regardless, I’m glad I began last year and so far , I have made a couple of thousands from it . Although , I wished I had started it 4 years ago when I first heard of it .

I'm also into Crypto but it's not easy on me as I am combing both my regular work of 9-5 and also trading all by myself and so far it's really not working as I've lost most of my capital and no good returns. @@toddcraig9935 I am still lacking in experience. I am a banker and barely have enough time for myself let alone to trade .All my investments including crypt is managed by my investment adviser. I met him at a business conference many years ago in TX.
@@toddcraig9935 To cut the story short dear, my Cryvpto trading / investments was easy and stress free due to the assistance and directions of my investment adviser . HE personally managed my trades to avoid me making mistake or loosing out in a market uptrend as a result of my busy time frame .

I got rid of my buying too many clothes just because they don't cost much by choosing my favourite clothing brand (which is NOT cheap) and deciding I will never buy other brands of clothes. Since prices are not that affordable, I will buy clothes only when I truly need new ones. It works.
(also, I must thank the pandemic for making me stop using make up, another thing I won't buy anymore. XD)
