I bbq'd many steaks when in my 20' - 40's, now I crave bbq'd burgers, always real coals, final step is bbq sauce on the patty with closed lid, then hot patty on the cheese. That's it.
My mom used to get these for going to the beach, it was fine for burning a couple packs of hot dogs to feed a bunch of kids while spending the day freezing in the water. I don't remember problems with them, they did the job and then went in the trash. The problem with them is the food is practically on the coals, so it's hard controlling the cooking without burning the outside with being raw inside, so hotdogs work fine, I wouldn't go too crazy trying chicken though. There's better portable BBQ's out there if you use one often enough to make it worth it.
They need to make a personal one that you can keep useing

Have eaten many hotdogs on the beach mom burned on them, they're fine and kids will probably not care when they're hungry. But if you don't have much space and like to BBQ once in a while, you can still find cheap hibachis.
