    Great Video, i agree with Jerry. Buy the bike you want if you can afford it. But not everyone can afford their endgoal bike. Thats why my first bike was a XL1200. Also when shopping for a bike. Think about the custom work you can do to keep ya in love with it and the cultures that have been made around that model. Like the Cholo Heritage, a springer seat Fat Bobber, Club style Dyna, big rim bagger or the latest performance bagger. Have a plan for the bike you want.

    Jerrrrrrrrry! The 458th coolest white guy I know!
    I learned to ride on a Honda Rebel. After one month I bought a used Iron 883 and rode it for two years. I then traded the iron in for a Heritage 114, rode it for three years, then traded for a Road Glide Special. For me, as an older starting rider, this was a very good progression.

    Jerry’s right “buy the bike you want to buy” I started with the softail street bob with 0 experience, you get used to the power very quickly. You just need a level head. Sportster’s crap IMO.

    I agree with Jerry 💯 I bought fxbb my first bike I’m glad I did it’s the bike I wanted and I saved money and i love it enjoy every moment and take it slow and I got a crash bar ….thank you Jerry everyone gets pushed towards the sportys and waste there money

    I Agree with Jerry. Buy the bike you want. If you want to get a Low Rider S, get it, or even a Softail slim. If you do end up spending the money on the bike you want endgame, you will treat it with respect and you will be more responsible. Your hard earned money gets to your mind and will definitely change your mind set. Even though you’re a beginner, get the crash bars like Jerry said, and if you don’t like the look of them then take them off if you want.
    I went from a done up badass Iron 883 as I thought that was a good light beginner bike, traded in a year later for a 2017 CVO street glide, and 4 years later just traded to a 2021 Low Rider S.
    I went to the street glide because I was doing longer highway runs. Absolutely loved the street glide for it. I thought I had my endgame bike. BUT I found that I missed the sporty for bombing around town and wished I kept it along with the street glide. I also missed the customization aspect of the sporty.
    Life changes happened and had a kid and now onto my 2nd. Those long rides I didn’t see myself doing anymore. I held out in 2020 on getting the Lowrider S and this year made the decision to trade.
    Now with the Low Rider S, it feels much better than the sporty did. It does not feel as top heavy as the sporty did although it is a heavier bike. Love the look and feel of the low rider S. I’ve taken it on the same long rides I was doing with the street glide to compare and I could not be happier with the Low S. It is the perfect medium between around town and long day trips. It is a very capable bike. If you need saddlebags, buy bags. If you want audio, buy audio. The new Softail line is the way to go. Get a sport glide if you do longer runs. But in all honestly, anything can be added to the Low S, it all depends on what your needs and wants are.
    You’re going to end up spending money on modifications and customization on the bike anyway, so really are you saving any money going with the sporty and then trading in to do it all over again. Jerry is right in my opinion. Figure out what your needs and end goals are, and then buy the bike you want based on that. Don’t think about the cost if you can do it.

    I have a 2018 Iron 883, and besides buying the Hammer 1275 kit, it’s all the bike I need!!! I’m 5’ 10”, 156.... I could push a bagger easy, but I’m honestly happy with my Sporty!!!! All city riding!!!

    Picked up the Low Rider S as my first bike and no drops or issues after 600 miles in the first month ( touch wood). It’s definitely a mindset though, I ride pretty defensively and only open it up in space or on the freeways. In all honesty, it has grunt and torque but it’s not as powerful as people were scaring me into believing for a first bike. I’m definitely looking at stage 1 or 2 after 1000 mile service. The handling and stability on the bike is excellent which is why I don’t think it’s a terrible bike for a newer rider.

    • @chazlyle41
      @chazlyle41 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would agree. It could have just been me getting used to it, but I rode two 2021 Low Rider S models and they both seemed to kind of crack on the throttle quite suddenly and then putter out more evenly through the rest of the rev range? Do yall feel the same way or was that just me? Twas a bit snappy at first crack of the throttle and I thought, dang this has more power than I had heard. Then the rest of the way through I thought, oh, nope, little less then expected ha. Maybe just me from switching to a new bike for the day.

    • @anthonyr587
      @anthonyr587 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chazlyle41 I actually totally agree with you, I think it leads back to knowing that power is going to be there in advance and concentrate on smooth throttle inputs. You feel it in 1st and 2nd but after that it comes on a lot more moderately. I posted somewhere else that this WILL stand you up and run you wide in a turn if you are heavy on the throttle and not ready to lean or counter that. It is a great bike though, it should be respected and not feared. The fundamentals are the same on any bike, its a mindset. You just get punished more with powerful bikes lol.

    Dynas are great bikes to get these days. You can get one for sportster money (3000-6000$) unmolested and they are not being produced anymore. I need one before they skyrocket in price-- would love to do a 88 twin cam version with the FXR fairing

    Great video! I’m glad @40 years old w/ zero riding experience I went with what I wanted, a 2021 FXLRS and couldn’t be more happier thanks to your guy’s videos in helping me make a wise purchase decision. Now almost 45 days of ownership and a MSF course I feel comfortable but treat her with respect & dignity. My screaming eagle stage 3 gets installed next week so it falls in like with my additional 5 year H-D extended warranty purchase. I will keep this bike forever.

    Interesting dialog between you and Jerry. I am looking to buy my first Harley this year. But can't even think of buying new or near new softails, which are almost priced identically. I'm looking at a 2002 Softail Standard with 20,270 miles on it. Was thinking of that vs a new Iron 883. I think the Softail wins. Even though I am only using it to commute to the train station and for pleasure riding on back roads. The lower center of gravity and the balanced engine will make riding much more enjoyable at my age - almost 59. Even though the TC88 has the cam tensioner issue, it's a known issue that is easily solved, and the work should've already been done until the next time it needs checking in 40k miles or so. I have read that they don't really have the power to keep up with the M8s, but honestly if they made an 883 Softail that would be my choice. I am not looking for power so much as reliability.

    Buy the bike that you like. Not the bike peeps say are the best starter bikes.
    Take a class, practice your skills, and if worried about the famous drop that again peeps always say. Buy a engine guard drop damage safe.
    Just don’t buy and want to trade up in 6 months. Unless you like to burn money.

    I recently purchased a Low rider s as my first Harley, the reason being is number 1 it’s what I wanted number 2 I don’t want to ride a sportster for a year and go damn, maybe I should’ve went bigger, at the end of the day I believe you have to ride within your limits though, when I first bought it I would only got a couple miles a day. On top of all of this I also wanted to go on longer rides due to the significantly bigger tank the low rider s has

    The Sporty is the last REAL Harley left. I learned on a Rebel 300. Looking at (possibly) a 2015 Dyna Street Bob or the FXLRS. I think the rider responsibility plays a big part in it. A friend once told me "Its gonna give as much power as you give it." Hopefully if they are the knucklehead 18 year old, they have a wise family member that says no bike for you. Now I had a dealer actually tell me what Jerry said. Just go for your dream bike. Which at the time was the FXBB. Now I want fuel capacity.

    I started on a 04 shadow 1100 and just bought a 2020 lowrider S. I feel like a metric bike is the way to go for new riders because it’s a low cost of entry and they’re usually user friendly and very forgiving. I just think about the times where I did drop my shadow and how shorty it would have felt to drop a nice Harley that cost me double or triple the price of a cheap shadow.

    • @fahad6568
      @fahad6568 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shadows are actually very nice, reliable, efficient and enough power to them especially 1100s. Harley fan but nothing comes close to honda if we're talking decent power, reliability and value for money

    I see both points . If they have half a brain and take a bike class they could jump into a low rider s . I know from experience don’t think a bike is to much for you because you out grow it . I got a 750 street street rod mostly because it was a great deal and I hadn’t riden in years. I wanted a commuting bike . I loved the bike but I out grew it really fast. I did get sideswiped a few months ago and the bike was totaled and now I want a low rider s . For long rides and commuting . I think I am responsible and ride at my abilities. Some people will surely go beyond their riding abilities .
