  • We get it. You’re upset. How could Yamaha possibly perform something as sacrilegious as this? The name YZF-R7 belongs to one of the most iconic motorcycles in Yamaha’s history. A 750cc screaming inline-Four that was basically purpose-built for racing, with looks that have stood the test of time, the original R7 is a legend. To put it on this - on this - is simply unforgivable.
Are we right? Does the description above apply to you? We have news for you: You’re probably not Yamaha’s target audience with the new, 2022 YZF-R7. In fact, the new R7’s target audience were literally babies when Noriyuki Haga was sliding the old R7 all over the world chasing a World Superbike title. That was 20 years ago, people. It’s time to move on. If it weren’t for all the backlash about the name, today’s crop of up-and-coming sportbike riders probably wouldn’t have even known about the original R7.
Easily the most controversial new model of 2021, the certain uproar over calling it R7 certainly wasn’t lost on the folks from Yamaha when it came time to pick a name. But there’s a method to this madness, and to understand the thought process behind the name is to understand the sportbike world since July of 2008. Watch the video and allow MO's road test editor and resident fast guy Troy Siahaan to explain.

I really think this R7 was a genius decision from Yamaha. If you're into sport bikes and want to take your bike to a track day you'd either have to take an r3 or an r6. Thats a very big leap and like he stated in the video alot of people wont even use the r6 where its meant to be used in those high rpms. Im hoping this bike is a stepping stone for alot of people. I look forward to picking one up some day.

R6 was one of the best selling bikes Yamaha has ever sold, they discontinued it because for one they didn't want to spend the money to make it current emission complaint, but mainly because there is a hell of a lot more margin they can make on this new R7 (which uses mostly cheap stamped steel constructions), as compared to the very expensive to manufacture R6 (which is all high end forged aluminum and magnesium components). I'm sure the R7 will sell fine, but it will never achieve the same status as the R6 did. Since this review is at the racetrack, I'd love it if Troy would tell us if, given the choice of only two bikes to ride on track, the R6 and the R7, he'd pick up the R7 and not the R6. To me, this review sounded more like defending the choice Yamaha made than an actual review. It's not the bike itself that bothers me. It probably has its place in the world and the sales will show it. It's the name that bothers me. It's a slap over the face for diehard sportbike enthusiasts. So Yamaha... why pretend?

Agree with half of what you said. I'd only say it is not the bike itself that bothers me - it's the PUSH everyone is trying to do with this bike. Every reviewer on TH-cam this past week has been sucking this bike's dick and being DISINGENUOUS. @UCBrki65pkVNzYTNkPYVdqxA You just described ALL marketing for every product that ever existed. This is an entry-intermediate level sport bike that is a significant step up from the R3. Look at the ergonomics, the geometry, and the chassis, and the weight. It’s a proper sport bike unlike the CBR650 and Ninja 650. I have no qualms with them calling it the R7. Yamaha shouldn't have named it R7 though. It's an insult to the real R7, which is in my opinion the best looking Yamaha out there.

who cares? people are salty over an old and obsure racebike that theyve never even seen/ridden or even googled up until now

  • @makenzie71

I love the idea of the new R7 but I find it amusing that cost is cited as being one of the biggest reasons the R6 was axed and the need for a budget friendly sportbike commuter being the cited for the new R7's creation...but then making the R7 almost as much as an R6 was. That's going to cost people $10k out the door.

Around 8k so its like 7k difference

    • @makenzie71
      @makenzie71 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@BadEnglicInc MSRP for the 7 is $9k, which means it's going to be close to $10k out the door. R6's are still going $12k out the door. This is not a considerable price difference.

Great review and I agree with the other commenters: Yamaha needs to bring an R9.

UK watchers; will there be any spec difference between this and "ours"?
    Update:
There ARE differences between the 2021 and 2022.
    There ARE local differences too.
E.g indicators are different in size and shape even between Europe and UK!
Most changes are between US and European/UK though.

Hmmm? With CFmoto hooked up with KTM and announcing a suite 750cc paralell twins I bet we see an RC750 in the not so distant future, so watch out twin cup racing (750cc limited) with Blue & Orange rivals going hard at it. This has to be a good thing right?

We all that ride R6 wanted a replacement and this clearly is not it. Pretty sad I am stuck with no bike to replace my R6 because that R7 is not close to my R6 in anyway I do 30 plus track days a year dropped from liter bike to R6 it was so good. Maybe 636 the next gen.

Agreed they should bring out a engine with mid-range and smoothness of the mt-09 that is an extremely fun bike to ride! Now put that into the looks and setup of a R6! And the mt-09 was also still affordable!

The best thing about sport bikes is knowing they can beat a sports car if u really want to even if u rarely use the power. What we need is an r6 with no electronics to keep the price down. Just a raw mechanical machine that relies on skill to go fast. U dont need electronics on a 600.

To the people saying we shouldn't complain about Yamaha calling this an R7, how about Yamaha call it an R7 TURBO next year without actually installing a turbocharger on the bike? Because... Why not. The name doesn't matter, right? Just like how Porsche has a Taycan Turbo which is a 100% electric vehicle.
The "R" in the name used to have meaning. Yamaha is causing the "R" meaning to be cheapened because of their decision with this bike. That's similar to how ford made an electric SUV and called it a "Mustang". That was a slap in the face to diehard Mustang fans and it has caused the "Mustang" brand to be cheapened.
This bike should not have been called an R7! I'm not showing bias either. I actually don't even buy Japanese supersport bikes.

It’s a parallel twin MT-07 with fairings. Definitely not a SuperSport like the R6👎🏽
Euro 5 emissions killed the high-revving in-line four R6. She will be missed p😢
