      That transition from the high-pitched "Don't let her get away mommy!" to "I won't, Jason. I WON'T" in that bloodcurdling voice. That was SOOO creepy. That was a masterful bit of acting on her part. It really drove home just HOW cray-cray this lady is.

    Saw it in 1980 late June in the theatre. The first reaction to seeing Mrs. Vorhees was -thank God, someone's come to help. And then when she started going bananas it was-son of a bitch. It was the first time, I can remember, that a woman was the killer and that was a big shock.
    For perspective, at the time Kevin Bacon was an unknown actor. If anyone recognized him it was because of Animal House.
    His death is the best out of all of the deaths in part 1.

    • @alucard624

    That was Tom Savini's idea to have the jump scare with Jason coming out of the water. That's the reason for the calming music at the end to make the audience think the movie is over only to have Jason appear.

    The jump scare was added by the producers who wanted a final zinger like "Carrie." It was not in Victor Miller's original script, and he hated it. Of course, without it, there would be no Jason franchise. It probably would have changed the horror cinema landscape forever.

    • @robertmcghintheorca49
      @robertmcghintheorca49 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      And ironically, considering that the ending of "Carrie" was paying homage to "Deliverance", it's arguable that "Friday The 13th" did a better job at paying that homage.

    The echoing sound that you hear is actually what's going through the killer's head, it's technically "Ki ki ki, ma ma ma" for "kill mommy kill". Or later it's seen as "kill for mommy" for Jason

      This movie was also Kevin Bacon's debut

    • @robertmcghintheorca49

      The story goes that composer Harry Manfredini was reading the script and the visual of Pamela Voorhees speaking in her son, Jason's voice stood out to him, so he broke those syllables down, spoke them as harshly as possible into a microphone, and then ran the recording through an Echoplex delay machine to create the echoing sound.

    One of the many things that are great about this film is the prophetic dream. The rain turning to blood and the storm seems to indicate that she will be finished off outside, but it's the name she has given her dream that should have been her warning, all along "I call it my shower dream". That's actually very clever and good writing.

The best thing like you said about this ground-breaking franchise is the suspense more than the actual kills and the music (the score) of this franchise is second to none. I first watched the original Friday the 13th in February 1988. I'd seen commercials for the sequels on TV and went into this expecting a guy in a hockey mask. I still remember Mrs. Voorhees showing up and thinking that Alice was saved. Then it was like "Why isn't this lady wanting to get them out of there?" Then the realization hit why she was going on about Jason. I was totally not expecting that. And then, just when you think that it's over and that the two cops on the shore are going to rescue Alice out on the lake in the canoe, they throw in Jason popping up out of the water to grab Alice. While not one of top 10 favorite horror movies, it is one of my favorites.

It was still cool, and my favorite of the bunch, but I wish I had seen it first without knowing who the murderer was.

    I love watching both of your reactions and I especially like the fact that you don't give anything away. I know for me that wouldn't be easy....as I've seen almost every horror film known to man a dozen times or more at least. You do very well not spoiling anything :) can't wait to see to see you guys view the Halloween franchise in October.

    I know you watched this a while back, but I am going to enjoy seeing the Mrs. Each one of these. I first watched the orginial Friday the 13th in the mid 80s. I was like 8 or 9 years old. I could not sleep all night.

    Love watching you guys. As for F13, I was one of the (lucky?) ones to see this in the theatre. I actually had a double whammy: I saw this when Part 2 premiered in 1981 and some local theatres ran Parts 1 & 2 as a double feature. I was 13 (so yes, I am an old fart) and it was my introduction to horror movies as far as the big screen, and what a helluva intro to the genre. It both fascinated AND scared the bejesus out of me, and thus began my lifelong love for horror flicks. And it, too, is one of my all-time favorite horror movies (I'm talking Top 5 for sure).
    As always, I enjoyed your reactions. It's so refreshing to see someone who is CLEARLY not the greatest fan of the genre watch these movies, even though I do feel sorta bad for ya, but kinda not really - lol.
    Take care. Stay safe.

I was looking forward to seeing how she responded to Mrs. Voorhees and the lake boy and she didn't disappoint. Looking forward to going through the rest to keep up with the back and forth between these and Freddy. Great one on NOES 4 DM too, BTW!

    I first saw the original Friday the 13th film nearly 30 years ago. I owned the Friday the 13th game on NES and have seen Jason Lives on television, so I was aware of Jason as a character. I was super surprised to learn when it was Mrs. Voorhees in the original. I always loved the original, because it’s such a great movie.

    GREAT reactions!
    32:04 my fave kills in this FT13 is definitely the sequence of Ned, Jack and Marcie. It is so well set up. And so morbid. You have Marcie and Jack doing it with a friggin corpse above them in the top bunk. Then when Jack is killed, now there's TWO dead bodies. One for each bunk! Marcie's axe to her face blew me away when I first saw FT13 on cable at a neighbor's house back in like 1982 cause my family didn't have cable yet. Great times and memories! It still looks amazing to this day, Marcie's kill. Tom Savini is a legend.
    I love Annie's death sequence as well. It sets the whole tone going forward in terms of just how dangerous this killer is. Also a great lesson on why never to hitchhike!

    The one thing I was they had done is this movie, is have sown Pamela in the background of the store giving her just a one liner so when she shows up you don't completely wonder who she is and why she's there.

    I have to admit that I look at these movies much differently now than I did back then. As a 10 to 12 year old kid in the early 1980s I only saw these movies as too terrifying to watch, as the television trailers alone scared the hell out of me. As a teenager in the late 1980s, I watched these movies on cable TV and enjoyed them, but also saw them as inferior to movies like Halloween, Psycho, The Shining, and A Nightmare on Elm Street. But now, I see those first four Friday the 13th movies are sentimental pieces of 1980s nostalgia, reminding me of a time when a mask wearing psychopath offered Generation X a harmless escape from the problems of the world, and where every year seemed like summer camp, with no social media, no political correctness, and people had much more freedom.

    #1 When someone asks if you locked the door during a horror film the response is "I'll get it after the movie"
    While I didn't see it in the theaters I watched it on cable around 1982 or 83 so I was about 9 or 10. This was the first modern horror movie I watched all the way through by myself. Granted who the killer was had already been spoiled (those darn kids on the playground) but enjoy watching this movie to this day. I wouldn't see a Friday the 13th in the theater until part 8 and have only seen 2 at the cinema, part 8 and Jason goes to hell ( which was the first midnight showing I ever attended.)

  • @jasonvoorhees310

    I can't believe they killed a real fuckin snake. The 80's were wild. And despite what people think, i don't hurt or kill animals like that Psycho Mikey. All the animals other than that poor snake survive the Friday films.

      On the contrary mr vorhees you have killed 2 dogs... one in pt2 ( a small dog) and 1 in pt 4 when you threw tommy jarvises dog out the upstairs window... just sayin

    • @jasonvoorhees310
      @jasonvoorhees310 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mikedavis1476 nope. Muffin survived. You clearly didn't see the end of part 2. And as for Martin, he wasn't thrown. He jumped out the window and got the hell out of there. You clearly don't pay attention while watching the film. So again no animals were killed by Jason Voorhees. It was those sex crazed, drugged fuled, beer drinking teenagers who killed the only animal on screen in the Friday the 13th franchise. Get your facts right before you come at the king. Now go lay day little boy. Make sure to say your prayers before bedtime.
