Back in the original Captain America comics Bucky was added as a character almost immediately after Dick Grayson was added to the Batman comics as Robin. And yes, they added Bucky as a *child* sidekick, he was originally like 13. Here's the thing though, even back then in the comics, Captain America had a 'no killing' thing, but as a soldier he shouldn't have kept the enemies he fought alive - so, after Steve would go and clear a room, Bucky would follow after him with a gun and kill all of the guys that Steve had taken out. Bucky was also put on Steve's team by the government. So, not only was Bucky a child, he was a government sanctioned child assassin and child soldier.
