    Accidents happen but when they are avoidable like this it’s even more of a shame

    • @somedumbozzie1539

      When they are avoidable they are not an accident they happen because people think "oh it will be ok" if you ever hear this run far run fast.

    I’m a retired equipment operator & ran cranes for several years ( and did erection work on tower cranes ). The operator has the final world when making a lift like this & it’s VERY unfortunate that they GC didn’t respect their professional opinions! This was avoidable

    I guess the lesson got forced down the iron worker's union's throat, the words "stick together" means they should have all dropped their tools and walked out well before the accident.

      I have quit very well paid construction jobs for having a slack attitude, Australian work cover would crucify anyone in a man basket they are illegal here. Checkout the Westgate bridge disaster.

    I got shown this video while training to be an mobile operator in UK, The 1st operator wouldn't do the lift because of high wind, So they asked a second operator (adding a BONUS) To do it he obviously said yes and this is exactly what happens when you go AGAINST YOUR INSTRUMENTS.

    • @jackblack9208
      @jackblack9208 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think that it was the wind although because of the wind the lift shouldn't have been made. Watch the video and listen carefully. The operator starts lowering the structure and you can hear the engine reving fairly high. Then about 7 to ten seconds before you hear the pin break, you can hear the winch brake squalling. Seems to me that the operator got the load moving downward too fast. Keeping in mind, when dealing with a million pounds, going down as much as a couple of inches per second could be too much. And he was trying to slow it down. The weight of the structure plus the inertia of it moving too fast combined with the application of the brake puts tremendous stress on the pin, likely enough to exceed its limits. The wind could have also been a contributing factor adding additional stress. However, even if the wind wasn't blowing I think it still would have happened. I have worked in the gulf of Mexico for a while on oil rig tear down jobs dealing with similar weights. I have never heard a winch brake squall like that for that long when lowering a platform on to a material barge. Or let me clarify. I have heard the brake squall but no more than just about a second.

      @haughie61 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the squealing was the swing brake, he had to load up the swing motor to release the brake going into the wind ,took the brake off and had a definite spine chilling realisation, I'm #@&#%@ here and I can't stop it, poor bastard.

    Speaking ONLY about the lawsuit and money part. So what Mitsubishi loses 100 million. They simply add 2% cost increase to ALL their products and they made money on this. Consumers pay for this not the companies

    I was working at the Wood River refinery years ago and even though I quit smoking and tested myself multiple times at home and then passed a urinalysis at the lab I came up hot because I was dehydrated when they hit me with a surprise drug test so i was kicked out of the refinery.
    At the same time the operator for one of the world's largest cranes that they were using on the same project came up hot for THC also.
    When the refinery went to kick him out the company said if he goes so does the crane because it's his crane and no one else can operate it.
    Wouldn't you know....they gave him a waiver and he kept his job and finished the project.
    Just another example that it's all about the money.

    What a mess.
    Miller Park is a beautiful testament to the skill of mankind and the stupidity of people at the same time.
    I have been to many Brewer games there and am always impressed with the construction of that park. There are no bad seats in the place.

    Doing a heavy lift in 15 to 30 mph winds make about as much sense as alcohol and night boating.

      If you cause physical or emotional harm and you can prove it to a judge and a jury of your peers you can be sued for that. Obviously it has to be a strong case, you can't sue your girlfriend for breaking up with you. In this incident there was negligence on Mitsubishi part. Alex Jones and Amdee Hears vs Johnny Depp are cases where things was just said that was causing harm and the high profile nature of these cases will have high damages as far as rulings goes.
