    Great video, my dad also has one of these. Ironically my dad's car is also one of the 6 examples with rear seats. He bought it in 2004 when I was born so I could ride in the back. However I do prefer our spec because it's finished in speed yellow with the aero package. I have driven the car a couple of times now and everything you said is true. My dad used to own a 964 RS which was noticeably more hardcore in every way. I still prefer the 993 because it is a bit more civilized especially on longer drives while retaining the 'RS' character.

    I got to drive a friend’s 993 C4S on track. I was so amazed at how good the brakes were and how easy it was to steer with the throttle. The Porsches of this era were superb.

    • @nirfz
      @nirfz ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Porsches brakes always were top. When i was a child, a german car magazine used to go to the highest mountain road of one of their neighbouring countries for an annual brake test. (i am from that neighbouring country)
      They alaways took a 911 with them for benchmarking. What they did in these tests is what nobody should do: they went down the steep and long descent in the highest gear possible and just using the brakes to slow down. And at the bottom they accellerated and stopped 0-100kph 3 times and measured the braking performance. There never was a car that surpassed the 911 they took with them.
      There were cars that had good brakes like most cars of their fellow german premium brands, but none ever beat the Porsches they had with them.
      And that was before carbon ceramic brakes were a thing.
      And then there were the bad ones. I remember a Chrysler PT Cruiser where the breaks were on fire even before reaching the last few corners on the descent. And they had no braking left for the 3 times, so they had to skip it.
      One reason 911's are so good at brake performance (the mid and the front engined Porsches aren't that much better than the competition) is the rear engine layout with the flat 6. Normal cars have a brake distribution bias of 70% front and 30% rear. Because the rear gets light.
      And with the low cetner of gravity of the engine and it being behind the rear wheels it keeps weight on the rear axle like no front or mid engined car can.
      Thus 911s can brake harder with their rear axle. (which has 2 effects: more overall peak brake performance, and the front brakes have to work less than in other cars.)

    993 is by far my favourite generation of the 911. It’s just stunning.

  • @raymondgreaves6167

    Hi Ted. Enjoyed your review. I have a 993 RS which I've owned for 20 years and done many miles in all over Europe. They are utter superb. I driven and owned many other great cars, older and newer, but the RS is the one I will never sell. It's perfect!
    I disagree with you on the suspension: it works extremely well on track (esp the Nurburgring which of course is rather bumpy!). You didn't work the brakes very hard and I can report they are epic, with superb feel and fade proof - the best of any car I have driven.
    I agree on the steering weight with the airbag wheel. This is fixed simply by fitting the Clubsport wheel which is 1 inch smaller diameter, thus less leverage thus more weight. Feel are weighting are only bettered by a Lotus Elise in my view.
    In my biased view, this is one of the best super-sports cars ever made. I've done nearly 50k miles in mine and still find it totally absorbing and satisfying to drive.

    964RS feels like a 964 C2 drank a Redbull, whereas the delta between the 993RS and non-Rennsport variant(s) is so much more significant. And having driven both a 964RS and 993RS back-to-back, my opinion is the driving experience of the 993 is vastly superior.

    Were you able to verify via VIN that this is indeed an RS? There are so many things on this car that indicate not an RS, even your feedback on the driving experience doesn't line up. This car seems more like a standard carrera with some mods (notably a lightweight flywheel). Not trying to accuse anyone of anything, just wondering as a 993 enthusiast and very long time owner.

    Wow I'm kind of surprised this car comes from over here but it's so rare I shouldn't be surprised in fact. CL-xxx-XX tells me it was probably sold around 10 years ago when we changed the license plate format. 95 ile de France is the Northern area of Paris (but that doesn't mean anything as we can put any region tag wherever we live ..). The 993 really is a special car I think, last air-cooled, 90's icon, it had a spot next to the Lambo Diablo poster ahah

    Amazing car, amazing video! The last true aircooled 911s, although I agree with your last comment that "you prefer the 964". The 964 had the looks the character more of any 911.
    P.S. I've seen so many videos in AutoTopNL TH-cam channel that everything looks so SLOW when you drive the 911 in the national road. When I see the speedometer and the RPMs rise, I get excited and believe you will continue that way, it would be so awesome with such a car! But it is US there and unfortunately you cannot do that..!

    Excellent car! I could tell that this is a rev happy car from the moment you first started the car. Are there really and budget Porsches that are revs happy like this? You can tell even watching this video that this is one special machinery, I can almost feel the way it drives.

    • @alanfish3317
      @alanfish3317 ปีที่แล้ว

      A Boxster or Cayman can be had for reasonable money and are just as rev happy, if not more so. The gearing is not quite as advantageous though, and the shifters require some reworking to have good feel. They sound totally different, but it still an excellent sound. A bit less raw, with more of a howl at high RPMs. They sound really excellent with an exhaust upgrade.

    Probably the best drivers's car in recent history. I heard that unlike many 90s performance cars the 993 Carrera RS actually does benefit from modern rubber and super grippy compounds because of how dialed in the suspension is it doesn't become a wallowy rolling mess like many other faster cars from this era do.

    The 993 Porsche I want most in this world is the EU spec 993 Turbo S from the porsche exclusive line. 444BHP 0-62 in 3.6 seconds quarter mile done with in 11.9-12.0 seconds. 6 speed manual AWD with surprisingly high ground clearance. If I had one or two of those in a perfect world I'd put winter tires on it and take it out in the worst snow storms drive it through deep snow & practice rear engined driving maneuvers low speed on snow covered roads. Only a perfect world or a net worth of 8-9 figures would allow for such wasteful reckless behavior like this though.

      I believe the main reason for this, is a very light flywheel.
      Which is part of what makes the engine so responsive to the throttle.

  • @alanfish3317
    @alanfish3317 ปีที่แล้ว

    Watching this video, I do not believe that the first gear is lower than the standard Carrera gearing. If anything, I think it is higher, which is a good thing. Second and third are definitely lower though. In the standard Carrera, the first gear is practically a granny gear, and second is far too high. It leaves a large gap between the two gears that makes shifting a slow affair as you have to wait for the revs to come down a bit in order to shift smoothly due to the heavy flywheel. It is also frustrating on a steep mountain road, as there is no correct gear to come out of a tight uphill hairpin. Second is too tall and you don't have any grunt, and first is so short you hit redline in less than a second if you mat it.
