Bowscale Fells Three Summits & Bannerdale Crags From Mungrisdale (The Lake District)

A curving ridge surrounds the head of Bannerdale, with Bowscale Fell at the northern end and Bannerdale Crags to the south.
The ridgeline is broad and grassy with occasional patches of bog and a couple of small tarns in the north. Bannerdale flows due east from the depression between the two fells to its junction with the River Glenderamackin.
A second tributary of the Glenderamackin, Bullfell Beck, runs parallel a little to the north, its source being directly beneath the summit of Bowscale Fell.
The heads of the two valleys are divided by a truncated east ridge, The Tongue, which sports a top at 553(m) at the far end.
From below, The Tongue appears as an impressive pyramidal peak with steep slopes on all sides, obscuring the higher ground behind.
A second, longer eastern ridge runs out to the north of Bowscale Fell, forming the northern wall of Bullfell Beck. This has two subsidiary tops at 615(m) and 604(m).
It ends steeply at Raven Crag above the Mungrisdale to Heskett Newmarket road.
Perched in a bowl scooped out on the northern face of this ridge is Bowscale Tarn.
This is a classic corrie tarn, held in by a whalebacked moraine and having a depth of around 18(m).
Bowscale Tarn was a popular tourist attraction in Victorian times, visitors being brought by pony to observe its wild and moody setting.
Tastes change and the tarn now finds itself on few itineraries for a grand tour of the District.
Legend had it that the tarn was home to two immortal fish, one version of the tale also crediting them with the gift of speech.
Above the water is Tarn Crag, the steepest face on the fell.

Firstly I'm so sorry to hear the sad news about your Dad condolences to you and all your family sadly I know how you feel I lost my Step Dad last August his resting place was Newlands Valley where he grew up and worked...these places now hold very special memories and thoughts for us.

Another brilliant video, Andy, Tracey and Billy. We love those fells and this is one of our favourite local walks when we're staying at the farm in Mungrisdale. We rememeber that bog at the bottom before they put the slabs there - pretty messy stuff 😂😂 Lively wintery drone footage and evening light and we like that new 3D route mapping feature at the end. You do a fantastic job Andrew and we think the best guide on TH-cam for walking the Lakeland Fells, knowledgeable, informative and a great watch , we just planned this very walk but will alter our route and follow yours as we think it’s better and we loved that aerial view map at the end of the video 👍👍👍
Wow awesome feedback thank you so much guys...i guess for me it's all about making memories something to look back on when I'm an old man...I'm no Mountain guide helping folk out kind of just comes from experience (every week for over 20 years) so I've been around a bit...I put my best into getting things right in the video if I go wrong (and I often do) I always edit the route and video to make a proper safe route for folk to follow.

What a treat seeing these fells from above! The sky, at the end of the video, was absolutely gorgeous. I've done this exact route and loved it. Well, I've tried to keep away from the edge. It was hard to see Billy so close to the big drop. But I believe, he is a clever dog and wouldn't do any silly things. Loved the map at the end. Great information like Tracey's map time. Please, keep the videos coming....😊

I love Mungrisdale such a beautiful location. I remember well the slog up to Bowscale Fell but the views make it all worth while. It's a beautiful area in't it mate I love it especially early morning (great for a Sunrise) thanks as always for the great feedback I'm pleased with the 3d flyover at the end and it was great to get that drone back up...just uploading my next video should be online Friday morning...something a bit different from my usual stuff and in a different area hope folk enjoy the video it was a nice interesting walk and a great location for the Drone.

Hello back 👋 from Tracey...that bog where the slabs are was hellish after the path disappeared into the river it was the only way across and almost impossible that la'al bridge was also upside down and closed what a mess the place was it took a couple of years to sort it all out.

Love this area, it's such a fascinating quiet corner. I've spent ages at Bowscale Tarn over the years - one of those hidden gems. Superb video as always, Andy. You've really highlighted the variety of this bit and the craggy nature of corners of it. And your narration is just right. Just enough of the route directions, a bit of the landscape, the history and the sheer beauty of the place. It's a hard balance to achieve but you've cracked it. Love the drone footage, absolutely stunning. And I much prefer the colours of winter to the uniform summer green and somehow the footage captures that really well. And you do really well considering you're carrying that big drum in your rucksack to accompany the dramatic drone music! 🤣I remember slithering down the path through the gorse on Raven Crag - hell on the knees at the end of a long day, even with poles!
Lol aye it takes some effort gitting that full size orchestra up on't Hill with me but I've invested in a bigger rucksack now so no problem 😁...I love these Hills especially early morning (great for Sunrise) it's a good few years since I was down at Bowscale Tarn it's nice just sitting there having a chat with the talking fish that lives in there... I'll need to take a visit sometime soon 🤣

@@RockStar67 Incidentally, it was great to hear you really enjoy the filming and the editing process. I don't underestimate how time consuming it can be, so all the effort is much appreciated. I remember trying to spot the caves in the crags underneath Bannerdale crags - I think I sat with binoculars below the path on the Tongue as the path in the valley botton was so boggy. I think I managed to see a couple of what looked like mine levels but didn't have time to go and investigate.

@@RockStar67 Just looked that one up, looks very interesting. I've got quite a lot of Cumbria books on its history, geology, landscapes, natural history - always room for one more! The Coppermines book by Eric Holland is really good too. Just finished Cumbria's Prehistoric Monuments by Adam Morgan Ibbotson (which is not aobut me, oddly enough!)

Great video Andy. I’ve been down that path off the end of The Tongue and it wasn’t nice. Nowhere near as bad as dropping down from Dollywaggon Pike to Grisedale Tarn last Saturday though!
I know what you mean about TH-cam - I love the whole process from planning the walk to uploading the video.

Loved this one so much. I love they way the whole Blencathra and beyond area looks and pumped to walk there when we return . Your climb up Raven Crags to Bowscale is the route I have mapped out for our descent (Souther. Blencathra, Bannerdale, Bowscale route). Other than it being steep, anything tricky about that path? And did you change your recap at the end, love this tweek to the format

Hi Guys, absolutely brilliant video as always Andy. The drone footage and was spectacular. I came down Raven Crag when I did Bowscale Fell and I can concur it’s steep. It felt like dropping 300m in about 5 minutes. 🤣
