Will you guys ever look at Ultimates 2 and 3? Though I understand why you wouldn’t do that, especially for 3 (that one is legitimately hard to read at times with how…problematic it gets).
"This tricks you into thinking Ultimatum was good!" Okay, story time. Ultimate Spider-Man was my first comic. I got Vol. 6 when I was maybe 5 or 6 and my love for the book and the Ultimate universe officially started there (it helped that I recognized lines and designs from the game). Didn't really get many other volumes because of some family drama and I just kept that one book close to my heart. Years later, I'm at the library, waiting in line with my dad for something. I look over and, on a rack, was Vol. 22 with THAT cover of Spider-Man's mask. It strikes me because 1. They got all the way to 22? 2. Does Peter die in this book? So I flip through, not enough time to read it, and I see the final page of the mask in MJ's hands with "End." on the corner. My child brain explodes. At some point, I'm older, and I star collecting all of the volumes and finally get more context about the universe, about Spider-Man, and about Ultimatum. And for another few years, in the back of my mind, I thought that event was going to be awesome. And I don't read it until I have a Kindle and discover I could read comics on it. Like Ultimate comics. They were in black-and-white, but that didn't bother me--I could finally read Ultimatum. For the last 5 or 6 years, I felt like everything was about to be paid off. My disappointment was immeasurable, and my day was ruined.
Ultimate Spider-Man was the first comic series I read all the way through from beginning to end. I believe my first comic ever was a Random issue of Spawn I got at my local drugstore when my mom said I could get a comic. I chose it because it looked cool as hell, but it was like issue 50 something so I had no idea what was going on. Ultimate Spider-Man is probably still my favorite comic series to this day though. I haven't yet gone back to read Spawn
The funniest thing about Miles is when he meets the maker their speech balloons for their dialogue is lowercase instead of the traditional marvel 616 font to show they’re both from alternate realities, which is a pretty fun detail that Hickman put in
I heard, "I have to go get more." and it gave me the will to live. when you're done covering Ultimate Spider-Man, I'm going to binge these episodes the way people binge The Office
I'm only halfway through and this may be an all time episode. The 911 tangent, the Ultimate Universe tangent, the Spider-Woman/teleporter tangent... this is f'in great
I love the idea of Stark just super bored walking into school and going " Yeah, let blondie in, I just bought the school" and then promptly walking out with any explanation.
As an English and Philosophy teacher, who happens to be a comic book nerd, I love your show, your tangents and your "transporter/teleport" debate! Of course you could side step the issue by having your mode of teleportation be like a gateway so space and time folds to accommodate you and there is no breaking down of your molecules! You just mess with space/time instead! Or, like me, you could sidestep the issue by belief in the existence of a soul or consciousness that identifies as you! That way a physical destruction of the bodily form is irrelevant! Problem solved! Thanks as always for the great show!
@@brianwilcox1686i love the redux episodes because the amount of context and understanding of comic books for Ben and Ethan has grown immensely. I also love sal spending a good chunk of each episode explaining how a book got made
Just hearing how convoluted and hilariously ridiculous the Ultimate universe ended. Then how Miles ended up in the 616 universe, is completely random to me. It’s jarring to follow.😅 Thank God for Sal telling this story the way he does.
I think molecule man brought back Miles's mom back because he gave him a cheeseburger when he was starving. Owen Reese will warp reality for food. If he liked ice cream, that obscure mutant that literally makes and becomes it would be walking him around on a leash. "Molecule man! Make me some sprinkles, my pet!"
This episode might be one of my new favorite Back issues episodes. The bits and banter with you guys is great! The story is really good and the only good thing that came out of Ultimatum. I also like that you mentioned Rhode Island for a big, I’m from Rhode Island!
When you guys do finally get to Death of Ultimate Spider-Man, please also include Ultimate Fallout. It acts as an epilogue of sorts and for me it was where the tears really started flowing
Oh my gosh! A Woonsocket reference!!!! I live in RI and I’d be stoked to see you guys at RI Comic Con! I know what you’re thinking but it’s actually a pretty large con and it has some super big names at it! C’mon guys it’s not like you have anything better to do!

9:40 "Wait, wait..." lol. Thanks Ethan for bringing that up, because I was also confused about that as well. If there are seemingly multiple Ultimate's comics, does that mean that Ultimate has it's own micro-multiverse? Or is it like a hypertime kind of thing? Not really a multiverse, just different timelines that are connected to one specific thing.
I think my first comic was spidey finding one of harry or normans old labs and then the place blows up after he thinks back on his gonlin problems, but the first comic i bought my self was a scholastic school subscription to ultimate spider-man i was so excited i’d read library copies of the early trades and i open up the mail and the first issue i got was the one with peters mask washed up. They killed him, great book glad to see you guys cover it. The good one i too am mortified by the event it’s self and the ultimates 3 that set it up.
The big point regarding the dead Gwen/teleporter tangent I'm surprised Sal didn't bring up is that the new Gwen's existence doesn't negate the fact that there's still a dead Gwen buried in a cemetery somewhere, so you can definitively prove that someone did in fact die and isn't coming back
I love this so much. I'm quietly laughing with tears in my eyes in the office because Sal demands that he died regardless of his body being reconstituted.

The Axe Hammer hybrid was mad made by the European government while in Ultimate 2 I believe he gain the traditional Mjiolnir from Odin after fighting against Loki's defenders he gains the Axe Hammer Hybrid back in Battle world 2015 event via God Emperor Doom
I never read Ultimatum because of your scathing review of it back in the day, BUT when I read the entirety of Ultimate Spider-Man as a teen, I loved the Ultimatum arc and how Bendis made use of the event in service of his narrative in USM.
This book was one of the few Spiderman books available at my local library, and that page with J. Johna Jameson was so amazing. It just captures both of their positions so well. Peter feeling so helpless agains this "natural" disaster, this unrelenting nature of his world; but he just keeps doing what he can. Jameson is in an even more vulnerable position, seeing water above his head, a cracked glass away from death and only able to see a world in chaos. Then he sees Spiderman, someone hes slandered for years. Someone he would expect to run, but still fighting this unstoppable wave, doing what he can, being a true hero. So what does Jameson do? He does what he can, in a world in turmoil, when he was nearly beyond hope, he does what he can and he writes. That one page that, that one short portion of story depictions heroism amazingly. How struggleing against the insurmountable, even in the smallest ways, is important. That when you do good things, no matter how small, you can inspire others to be better as well.
