  • "Nothing at All" by Shoose from The Bedroom Tape. 1995
Just after the death of Kurt Cobain, a wave of inspiration crashed over the US and the world. The grunge/punk movement in the 90's was still in full swing, and thousands of kids around the world picked up instruments and began writing and recording songs. These are a few of those kids. A 14 year old named Tom and his friend Mike began a band called Shoose, (that later became Honeysuckle). Tom picked up a guitar, learned a few chords, started to write songs and recorded them wherever he could. In this case they were recorded live on a cheap karaoke tape deck in his bedroom in front of a small group of neighborhood kids. For two 14 year olds who learned how to play their instruments and write songs only about a month before.... it's pretty punk rock. This may be one of the only tapes left from this short-lived band as the band and most else was lost to the dust of eternity. 8 songs of young teen, lo-fi, out-of-tune, punk rock splendor…. What a fu#@ing gem. “Fishy Tune” was a neighborhood hit, starting out with Tom declaring ‘This song is fucking awesome’. “Written on a Desk” was a deep cut within the friend group, and the last song “Peanut Butter and Jelly”, a punk cover of a tune from the children’s show Barney with guest vocals by friend Ryan was another favorite. At one point in the song “Barren”, you can even hear Tom's mother enter the room and complain that it was too hot in there. HA! But they kept going. Nothing could stop the energy that Nirvana and the alternative movement set forth back in the 90’s. Enjoy....
