Bring Me To Life didn't originally have a male part in it anyway. These are the original lyrics. Wind-Up records told them they wouldn't sign them unless they added a male singer, full-time. Evanescence said no, so they compromised on just having a male added to their first single. His lyrical parts were all written AFTERWARDS.
When someone says "no shit", it's to imply something that can easily be inferred has been needlessly pointed out. The information in the original post cannot be extrapolated from the song alone, therefore it's a perfectly reasonably and enlightening comment. However, your insecurity over your intellect is apparent and pointing it out does warrant a "no shit". Therefore, I will refrain from doing so.
There is also a version that exists that removes the male vocalist's parts entirely. I heard that version on my local hit radio station back in the 2000s, it made the song sound really weird, mainly for the male vocalist's part in the bridge. I never thought of his parts as rapping, but I know some people did (close enough, I guess), and some stations remove rapped parts from songs. I'm not sure why it was done in the case of Bring Me to Life, though, as there's no bad words (I could understand it if there was swearing or something), and they actually played numerous other songs at the time which were either straightforward rap songs or pop/R&B songs with guest appearances from rappers. Although in the 2010s, the local classic rock station added Bring Me to Life to their playlist, and they just play the regular version when they play it.
This is how Bring Me To Life was intended to be, I am so happy Amy got to perform it in a way she originally wanted to, can't wait to see her in Australia next Feb !
I was originally disappointed when I heard their new album would essentially just be remakes of old tracks. But then I heard this. I am no longer disappointed. I am hyped.
This is how the track was originally supposed to sound! The male vocals were added by evanescence's label (because they thought the song was too feminine). I'm glad Evanescence got to make the song as intended :)
@@alexs3290I still miss the way it sounded the first time. I wish there was a retaliatory version that was made where there was more screaming from the male vocals.
The version with the male lyrics always like a desperate conversation. This however, lacks that making it all the more desperate and sad as there is nobody calling back to her. It’s also strangely unnerving, and I dig it.
The song is just better with the counterpoint. You have staccato aggression juxtaposed with the more vowelly emotion with power chords you need some more percussive vocals to emulsify the thing as the operatic vocals are just too much on their own. It needs that call and response, it alludes to a more evocative story. It's far more dynamically interesting and stops it from sounding like one long unbroken whine. This is why this was their biggest hit by a massive margin.

It's great Amy's doing what she originally intended, and what the publishers did was indeed scummy - fuck them. Her vocals are phenomenal, but my ears tell me I like the initial release with the male vocals, it created a nice contrast.
Yeah.... I like the Radio Version better too. The guitar groove during the first and second verse sounds like a heartbeat, a pulse that gives the song life and meshes well the song's title and lyrics.
I am IN LOVE with this. I think the only reason it "sounds weird" to me is because I've been listening to the other version for 15 years. This actually manages to sound more powerful even without the backup male vocals.
I like both versions for different reasons. For example, I think the one with the male rap is better for radio and this version is SO much better for live performance. There are lots of songs done differently for radio and live. That said, they should have released both versions on the same album.
Especially the humming she does with the piano 🎹 sends chills I love the orchestra in the background but the tempo with the 2nd verse I love her voice in this but in my opinion it lacks the energy and the darkness (if you catch my drift)
Part of that might be the difference in arrangement (choice of instruments). Yeah, the way the male voice was written really wanted to sound like a "bad boy" and that was the principal turn off for me about the original, I love this version
"In the shadow of 9/11, American masculinity was in crisis and the music industry seemed keen to cash in on the resulting anxiety by assembling legions of male rap-rock malcontents. Meanwhile, singer-songwriter Amy Lee's sketches of gothic metal with classical foundations became Evanescence's 2003 debut, Fallen. But while shopping the band around for radio play, Wind-up Records head Ed Vetri was allegedly told radio stations wouldn't play "a chick and a piano." So Evanescence reluctantly agreed to add male rap vocals to its lead single, "Bring Me To Life." Paul McCoy, frontman of 12 Stones, came in to insulate chauvinistic rock listeners from Lee's operatic subjectivity. The song would peak at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earn a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2003 - yet its resulting acclaim was a double-edged sword for Lee. "I've never tried to abandon my femininity with the band," she said in a 2013 interview. "I think it's very aggressive. I embrace that femininity. Whatever, the originally distributed version is better. Her voice don't have the energy. It's beautiful and powerful, but she can only do pretty. The record company did them a huge favor. Their other songs would've gotten half the radio play on half the stations without them adding that dude. What, sober? I think are like 2 others. If she could sing with some more tempo it would be different, but she likes to stick with that opera style and let the instruments do all the rest to transcend genres. It don't work like that.

So great to hear what Amy’s real creation sounds like. I know for the original, Ev had major fights with the label. But, I truly believe her intended version would never have led to the fame or created opportunities, like the resulting compromise did. This version may have sold ok, but would’ve never been very popular, outside of alternative/grunge genres
Exactly what I was thinking. As a fan of Amy's music and Evanescence in general, I find this haunting and beautiful. But it would have gone nowhere as a single.
People complaining "I like the original better" this is the original, the male vocals were added by idiot label heads because they thought a female fronted rock song wouldn't do well.
You're splitting hairs in a sense. You, I, and everyone else know exactly what these people mean. It's perfectly fine for them to like the original better, regardless of how it came to be.
To be fair, I do myself like the original more (never really cared much for so much orchestral melodrama in my music, it's kind of why Paramore was more my jam back in the day, but if it were Amy herself doing the "can't wake up" bits it would have been 100% objectively better) but this is fine. I mean, that we can even have differing interpretations of music is a beautiful thing. A-ha did a stripped down folksy version of Take On Me, and it's just... Better. At least it sounds that way to me. You might disagree with me and that's totally fine, but that's a beautiful thing, isn't it? Something that I didn't enjoy as much as you did now has a version that caters to my tastes. Even if it isn't my cup of tea, I am glad that this version of this song exists.
To nitpick, this isn't the original version either....but I know you mean the missing male vocals. I do have a copy of the original original...personally, I like the "Fallen" version better....it's just more fun to listen to.
If only people could understand how deep this song is.. Since little, I always knew the original song was only one person talking to herself. It's like she wants to be saved but at the same time doesn't have hope to be saved. And there are probably other message in it that I can't decode.
This version made me cry literal tears. Amazing what we could have had in the beginning if it weren't for record companies trying to pet the ego of the male demographic. This was seen as "too feminine" in an era where grungy male singers were the norm, and it pisses me off that we were robbed of this gem until now. Amy Lee is awesome for getting the chance to do her version and choosing to share it with the public.
Their label did it purely because they thought it would fill their wallets better. That's what labels do. Not because 'the menz no listen to whamyn-song!' She re-released Imaginary and My Immortal too. No evil men in those tracks save for the musicians who made up the damn band.
Same here, honestly, I prefer the duet version because I prefer the juxtaposition of differing elements, but this was her original version, and to each their own.
Honestly, I like both versions. The first one with the male vocals are more energetic and easy to listen (probably because of the nostalgia) but this original version feels so much more emotional and somber. Two different versions of the song, same lyrics, but completely different feeling. Looking forward to the other songs on this album :)
A lot of the comments focusing on the absence of the male vocalist keep calling him a rapper. He wasn’t a rapper, he was Paul McCoy, lead singer of the band 12 Stones.
I was never an "Amy Lee fan" or anything, I just liked a couple Evanescence songs. It's definitely weird hearing this song without the punching contrast, but it's also so satisfying to hear her round out all of her lines with room to breath. She's so talented, and the ends of the lyrics not being masked by transition really adds a new dimensions that more than makes up for it.
This is so cool! It really gives me a different perspective on the song which I really like! Her voice stands out so much against the orchestra. I love it!
God, I love both versions. Like, I respect the artistic issues with the "original." I'd never push that kind of top-down "we need this to be radio friendly," crap on ANY artist. But they made something amazing despite that. And now this takes the original essence and ideal, and just realizes it to such a beautiful degree. And so now were left with two different takes on the same song, by the same band. And they almost seem to tell the story completely differently, and Express the emotions differently. And I find that beautiful. X3
Incoming haters with the "ITS NOT ROCK" and "IM DONE WITH EVANESCENCE" Its different but that is what her intentions were with this project. It really showcases her voice even more so than it does with the rock instruments. Much like the other projects she has done like her children's album. Amy Lee's true fans will enjoy and find the beauty in this album. The symphony behind her makes it sound really epic and majestic. I bet her tour and seeing this live would be breathtaking.
It was always meant to be orchestra song when she wrote it according to her interviews. The Rock and Rap came in when they took it to production (she actually hates the rap parts). This is most likely how she would have intended it if she had to choose again.
Very early on as I started writing, I was inspired by the original version of this song. But as I got older, it kinda became this cheesy thing that felt hollow. Years passed, and recently I've been trying to work on a particularly difficult scene. I'm mainly inspired by music, so I've been searching for the right song. So many things either have the wrong lyrics or the wrong ~feel~ for what I'm going for. In a desperate moment, I came back to this song since the lyrics are kinda close to what I wanted... and I found this... and once again my creativity is sparked and saved. Thank you for remastering this. It's amazing.
Wow I'm years late and after hearing it hundreds of times I find out about the orchestral version and that it's what Amy Lee really wanted. Knowing the story behind it makes this version feel so powerful in a way. Even compared to the original, this one hits different, deeper into the soul and it's slightly painful to hear that pain in her voice. I always thought it sounded like she was singing her pain to us
I just spent a little time reading the various comments, some focusing on the " male vocals ", some comparing this version to the original release, etc. Personally, I like both versions, for different reasons of course, depending on the mood I'm trying to ride. But as a musician myself, I tend to appreciate any musician's continuous search for improvement, or feel of their music. I have to confess that I'm never satisfied with any version of my own songs, I change them sometimes nearly everytime I play them, for the simple reason, I want to be sure that I have made it the best it could be, given the outer limits of my talent. It's called " maturing" and it's a very natural progression in the lifetime of anyone who wants to grow and evolve. Amy I think has a clear understanding of that, if you compare her songwriting, singing, performance, and musical composition you can see it, she is constantly growing and improving. In my opinion, she is headed towards musical perfection.
You get it. Amy has always mentioned that she enjoys playing with instrumentation and changing songs up a bit over time. She dislikes doing the same thing over and over. She's even said she goes numb if touring for too long and needs to decompress afterward, live and then go back to create mode.
This whole album was amazing and deserves more recognition, this album has more passion than any of the music nowadays, why aren’t they popular anymore?
First three studio albums all went to No.1 in America. Then Amy took a break to raise a family, and then do this. Something she always wanted to do. New album The Bitter Truth is out now.
Tell the truth, I really like both versions. Sure, the "official" version is cheesy, but I like that it's cheesy. It's like victorian melodrama, angst that can crush walls! But it really was perfectly good on it's own before they had the rap vocals pushed on them. Though honestly, I wasn't really feeling it until the industrial drums kicked in.
Thank God for Amy Lee. That voice will Never be duplicated. So rich and meaningful. When she opens her mouth, I shut the hell up and listen. That voice😢💖💖💖
Label company was right... if this came out back in 2000s nobody wouldve pick this song up... not even me... cause i wasn't mature enough to understand or even handle these raw emotions of this song... but now, it is a perfectly aged bottle of wine.

I really like the initial version of this they released, but this one most certainly gave me chills. This has a more cinematic feel to it, but it's so cool. I'm glad Amy's had the chance to remake this as she originally wanted it to be
it's interesting to hear this version without the male vocals. her voice sounds more dramatic and the combination of electronica and orchestral blend in the background gives the song new life.
What a fantastic song by a truly transcendent artist and woman. I get this image of a black geometric flower opening and closing its petals like the layers of her voice. Love it.
Though the Fallen version will always hold a special place in my heart and is probably my favorite, this Synthesis version is like the grand cinematic stage performance version I can easily see in some never before seen Gothic Sci-Fi epic and I am all for it. Glad you got your vision Amy, it looks and sounds beautiful. Both of them. Rock on
I have goosebumps listening to this! It isn't my Evanescence's song but it certainly leaves an impression. It's not a phase,
It's part of you :)
On the bright side tho, that made it so this version didn't get meme'd to death
Shut up about male ego.
Their label did it purely because they thought it would fill their wallets better. That's what labels do.
Not because 'the menz no listen to whamyn-song!'
She re-released Imaginary and My Immortal too. No evil men in those tracks save for the musicians who made up the damn band.
if you want to compare this to the previous version, this will never be a hit as the previous version. Pls prove me wrong in real data.
It's not just you, I started floating at 2:25 or so, when the bridge kicked in.
Shout out from 12tone in 2019.
That's where I came from.
@@davidchidester5463 Me too. Never even knew this version existed before today.
It's amazing how different the two tracks are simply because a change of direction. Thanks 12Tone!
You too? Nifty!
I love how timeless this song is, and the orchestra definitely elevated it.
It sounds so much deeper and dramatic this way. Love it!
I completely enjoyed this. Agree with you, to see live would be amazing
Same as Linkin Park. Be grateful and thankful. Don't be assholes people. You might regret it later.
It was always meant to be orchestra song when she wrote it according to her interviews. The Rock and Rap came in when they took it to production (she actually hates the rap parts). This is most likely how she would have intended it if she had to choose again.
Her voice is AMAZING!
"true fans" jesus christ get over yourself xD
My life will be complete if Evanescence released one more album.
Andy Vegan They are releasing another album Nov 10th
They released their new album 😊 you have to hear it, it's fantastic ❤❤
The1JayBust4Life :0
There’s another new album now! The bitter truth
Glad she finally got to do the song through her original vision ❤
This is beautiful
Very early on as I started writing, I was inspired by the original version of this song. But as I got older, it kinda became this cheesy thing that felt hollow. Years passed, and recently I've been trying to work on a particularly difficult scene. I'm mainly inspired by music, so I've been searching for the right song. So many things either have the wrong lyrics or the wrong ~feel~ for what I'm going for. In a desperate moment, I came back to this song since the lyrics are kinda close to what I wanted... and I found this... and once again my creativity is sparked and saved.
Thank you for remastering this. It's amazing.
ive never realised before that this using music to set a scene for a written work is exactly how i write lol
She has an extremely powerful voice!
This is such an incredible introduction to Synthesis! Can't wait for the rest of the project to be unveiled slowly...
I always thought it sounded like she was singing her pain to us
Love this so much!!!! Hearing Amys backup vocals so clearly plus the band and no harsh male voice make this absolute perfection ♥️
As a kid I loved the original version, but thought the rap vocals were unnecessary. If kid me heard this version, their mind would be blown.
@Siddharti Tanashiri the Goddess or you could let people have their own opinions dickhead.
I'm so used to the other version but I LOVE this one. It's nice to actually hear her voice. Her voice is amazing
I have massive goosebumps and I’m not even halfway through the song, Amy’s voice is AMAZING!!!
It's like this version is so glorified, when someone like Amy has made her wings spread in full bloom.
"So, this is how it feels, the pain, the sorrow
and you, the only one how could see it in my frosty eyes"
I do like this version because it keeps the focus all on Amy's incredible, haunting vocals
Her voice takes me to places out of this realm 🖤🖤🖤
Tell the truth, I really like both versions. Sure, the "official" version is cheesy, but I like that it's cheesy. It's like victorian melodrama, angst that can crush walls! But it really was perfectly good on it's own before they had the rap vocals pushed on them. Though honestly, I wasn't really feeling it until the industrial drums kicked in.
Thank God for Amy Lee. That voice will Never be duplicated. So rich and meaningful. When she opens her mouth, I shut the hell up and listen. That voice😢💖💖💖
Label company was right... if this came out back in 2000s nobody wouldve pick this song up... not even me... cause i wasn't mature enough to understand or even handle these raw emotions of this song... but now, it is a perfectly aged bottle of wine.
this is so weird to hear without the male vocals, but i LOVE it! it really shows how beautiful Amy's voice is!
This is magical. It's so damn ethereal. I think I'm in love.
@2:50 - Chills. Man I love these Arabic strings.
Is it just me, or when you listen to this version, you get what this song really means way more
When I first listened to this it was on my phone and I hated it but now listening on my PC with ACTUAL speakers this is beautiful
try listening to it with good quality noise cancellation headphones. then the orchestra will be even more amazing... it is for me
Still makes me smile and tear up at the same time til this day. Thank you for literally saving me.
This gave me chills.
As a born again Christian I finally feel the original and true meaning of this song. I always wondered what it was about when I was a kid
I love this version. I'm so happy we finally got this.
I like both versions, to be honest. They both have a much different vibe to them.
How can you see into my eyes like open doors?
Leading you down into my core
Where I've become so numb
Without a soul
My spirit's sleeping somewhere cold
Until you find it there and lead it back home
Wake me up inside (save me)
Call my name and save me from the dark (wake me up)
Bid my blood to run (I can't wake up)
Before I come undone (save me)
Save me from the nothing I've become
Now that I know what I'm without
You can't just leave me
Breathe into me and make me real
Bring (bring) me (me) to life
Wake me up inside (save me)
Call my name and save me from the dark (wake me up)
Bid my blood to run (I can't wake up)
Before I come undone (save me)
Save me from the nothing I've become
Bring me to life
I've been living a lie
There's nothing inside
Bring me to life
Frozen (frozen) inside without your touch
Without your love, darling
Only (only) you are the life among the dead
All of this time, I can't believe I couldn't see
Kept in the dark, but you were there in front of me
I've been sleeping a thousand years, it seems
Got to open my eyes to everything
Without a thought, without a voice, without a soul
Don't let me die here
(There must be something more) bring me to life
this is way better than the other version, i'm glad that she actually was able to achieve the original vision for the song
I really like the initial version of this they released, but this one most certainly gave me chills. This has a more cinematic feel to it, but it's so cool. I'm glad Amy's had the chance to remake this as she originally wanted it to be
Had the pleasure of finally seeing Evanescence live. Amy Lee is truly amazing.
it's interesting to hear this version without the male vocals. her voice sounds more dramatic and the combination of electronica and orchestral blend in the background gives the song new life.
Rock on
They made this song better and even more beautiful
I saw her sing this in concert on the 18th and it was so gorgeous
CHILLS. how am I discovering this now. This fills all kinds of emotional spaces.
Goosebumps, just goosebump. 💛💛💛💛😩😍😍😍😍
Ladybug Foreva I saw this in concert... it was 100 degrees out but I had chills the whole time
It was even better live.
The first song I heard from Evanescence when I was 11. Since then I am in love with this band! Now I am 25 and still counting!
Hope to hear this version in Daredevil season 3!
All jokes aside this sounds so good! I'm so glad to hear some Evanescence!
Lee-Vi Salinas I understood that reference.
@@aloysiuswhiteboat2934 lol references
I'm glad they were able to create the version they wanted to make. It's so gorgeously chilling
Goosebumps everywhere & chills down my spine.. 🖤💜🖤
I don't care what the original was or anything, can we be left alone to appreciate music when we hear it?
Trying to imagine how epic this would be live. Definitely sounds weird without the backup male vocals though, haha. I like it.
Splat The Male Vocals weren't intended for the song in the first place
I'll be finding out this December as I've got tickets to one of her shows :)
Lucky you ;-; They're gonna be near me soon though, so maybe I'll get a chance to see them lol.
Just bagged my ticket for the Synthesis live tour. ;)
SanSpooky At what location? I'll be attending the San Francisco one in December :)
This is beautiful. How have I just found this. I still miss the piano intro coz I’ve been listening to it for 20 years but I love this
Really cool to hear how it was initially intended to sound.
I have goosebumps listening to this! It isn't my Evanescence's song but it certainly leaves an impression. It sounds like mix of classic, decay, and futuristic at the same time - just straight of an apocalyptic horror movie! LOVE IT!! You guys been rocking since I'm 10 years old (now I'm 24). DON'T EVER LEAVE YOUR GOTHIC STREAK. IT IS NEVER A PHASE!
Both versions are Epic.
Love this song this morning
Thank you Evanescence!! ❤
I don't know what y'all think but since the moment I heard the Synthesis version I fell for it. This one is way better than the original one.
I can't believe Evanescence invented strings
Lucas Matheus - 😂
待望のニューアルバム。
「Evanescence」以来、言葉に表せないくらい感動です。
I'm angry at myself that I didn't find this earlier
Same. Literally how tf did I sleep on this?
I'm in love with this album. I'm just lieing here listening to each songs. Her voice is so enchanting so unique. 😍😍😍
Wow! This is much more powerful than the radio version
And I thought the song couldn't sound any better. The two versions are definitely fantastic. Different sound yet the same. I love it.
SONG ICON OF ROCK
this is beautiful and haunting, the beginning brought me to tears for some reason. its so well done!
this is beautiful
I found the lyrics in the first recording absolutely remarkable. Then i seen the video. The subtraction of the meaningful words were a total injustice. Amy i would certainly bring you to meet my mother.
Old version: Pure Edgy
This version: Pure Emotion
:-D
Amy you are amazing, you are definitely the Queen.... Thanks for this version .... I really love all your songs.

can truly appreciate the power and beauty of her voice!
magnificient singing!
O-M-F-G!!!I admire Amy Lee's voice SOOOOO much!!!
No memes.
Just art.
I really love this version, I wasn't so fond of the male screaming...so this is perfect for me :)
Yeah, I am crying, tears of joy.
