Seven years ago, I started following you. I got hooked and followed 30 thru hikers that year. It was a good way to distract me from my depression after my wife died. The depression is gone but, I still follow thru hikers each year. Consider a pocket warmer that burns lighter fluid. They work well to dry shoes and socks besides warming you up. Be sure to treat your gear and outer clothing with permethrin just before you leave. It was a tick bite that killed my wife. Good video. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick

Typical experienced Former Thru Hiker that knows what gear matches their style. The CNOC became my bag during the 18’ hike. My marcher changes have occurred in Rain Gear/Pack Covers because I kept with the ULA and didn’t pay the price of the higher pack materials. Good to see you Scoutmaster! I buy the looseleaf and PDF combo of the AT Guide. Then I print the PDF to 81/2 x 11 and put it in a binder for my husband (my trail boos). I use the looseleaf pages a section at a time. Works out really good.
Heya Scoutmaster, an Eagle Scout here. That's a nice looking pack, and zpacks is a quality company. My treat to myself this year (i guess last 2024) was a new pack similar to yours. I chose bonfus packs, because I was blown away at the price. I was able to customize an ultralight pack for my situation. My budget keeps me out of super ultralight, and so my total weight carry is a little more than others. My choice was going to get the runners vest style straps, but that lowers the weight carry by a little bit (and also adds a few ounces for the strap). In the end, I got a 38 liter pack that is going to weigh something like 13 ounces. Having it handmade to my choices feels nice also. My choice was to add on the back panel support system, where you use your sleeping pad as a frame and padding for the pack. I just wanted to mention this pack, because for 220 dollars, a 38 liter pack weighing 12.2 ounces is pretty phenomenal. I know that there are many choices these days, but I was impressed by the features that were on these bags, and I think that they are a very nice budget buy for hikers. Previously, I was suggesting backpacks that cost 130 dollars, but I would find for 99 dollars on sale online. The value of a pack being twice the cost but half the weight is enormous. That is one of the biggest weight savings per dollar that people can do. It is why I am not even considering upgrading my xmid 2 solid, as the upgrade that saves ten ounces is seven freaking hundred dollars, and less comfortable as a single wall tent versus my double walled tent. Sorry, not sure why I ranted or anything ......... but I am enjoying the video so far. I leave comments further in the video as replies to my own comment, so that might look confusing.
i absolutely love my fanny pack. Mine is from my old backpack the granite gear x60. You remove the hip belt, and wrap the brain around it to make a nice fanny pack. This has become my favorite tether for hiking with my two dogs, as it is very padded for my comfort. The coolest thing is that I found this lumbar pack to be the best place for my heaviest gear to go. With the most weight close tight against my lumbar, this removed most weight from my pack. Not having my pack tied to my waist was the best thing to help my back pain. With an injury from the military, this is a sensitive area, and somehow it helps me.
Those neotherms are very reputable. My pad on the trail was a nemo tensor insulated pad, and it ended up bubbling up. unexpectedly, Nemo upheld their lifetime warranty, and gave me a brand new one. I chose to use that as a credit to an upgraded pad, and got the tensor extreme. With an r value of 8.4, I was surprised that this was not too heavy. The choice was clear when I found out that it can be flipped over for zero insulation. This now has become my full year pad. If I need warmth, I flip it over. The fact that they honored their own lifetime warranty gave me confidence to upgrade. We'll see how it works out. I'm not sure the darn tough lifetime is such a deal. You have to buy them, and if you lose one it's done with. Then you have to spend more money to ship them to the company. Swapping them out while at trail days was memorable, but I just don't know if I am going to keep with the lifetime socks cult
Wow that pillow is HUGE. I'd never have guessed it was 1.5 ounces. Maybe the camera is fooling me somehow. My blowup pillow is almost twice that weight, the traditional blow up style. Yours looks really comfortable!
Yeah REI gave out little fanny packs at Trail Days in (2019?), and that has become my potty bag. It is super convenient that I can sling it over a shoulder or something. might be a place that I could save an ounce or two with an ultralight upgrade, at not too much cost. i'll need to remember to weigh that next time I pull it out. sentimental items are fun to keep though.

Looks like a good load out. With that pack, you may want to have a carbon fiber stay that attaches the hip belt to the pack. Zpacks sells them, and they weigh nothing, but i had 2 break, and it's 4-5 days for them to get one to you.
On rehydrating the portawipes in a sanitary and efficient way -- take the cap off your smartwater bottle, and pour the cap full of clean water in Put the little tablet in the cap. It will soak up all the liquid and expand like a lil tower, lol. It will be moistened, clean, and ready to unroll and use for whatever you were wanting to use it for.
Great to see a tried and tested thru hike gear video. You likely know this but for other comment readers, the blue adapter on the sawyer queeze also allows you to back flush the filter with your clean water bottle. Also great to find a fellow rim-rim-rim Grand Canyon hiker. Will follow your 24 trek.

It seems to be a typical reaction - to want to hike the AT again instead of a different long trail. I considered hiking the AT again, right after finishing it, but realized I was just wanting to stay in my comfort zone. I was being overly conservative. I’m so glad I went on to hike most of our NSTs. They are all so unique. You grow in ways you don’t foresee if you choose to explore them. I’m headed out to the Hayduke in March. It’ll be so different than anything I’ve hiked before, I’m not sure if I’m ready, and that’s what I like. So many trails out there. And just one lifetime.
As far as being typical, yes and no. For me, I have done other trails since the AT to include the Pinhoti, the BMT, a R2R2R of the Grand Canyon, the Foothills Trail, and the Palmetto Trail to name a few. I also started a new Scout unit and started my own law firm all since my last AT thru-hike. Looking at doing the Camino in 2026, taking scouts along with me. I definitely get out of my comfort zone. The biggest reason I am doing it again is I was asked by a former scout of mine to accompany him on his first long distance trail. It’s hard to say no to someone who you helped to inspire to get into hiking. Best of luck on the Hayduke, it looks like a great hike. Let me know if you vlog it as I would love to check it out.
Have you thought about swapping to the Nitecore NU20 or 25? Rechargeable, waterproof, and ultralight. Might save you a bit of weight on the batteries. Good luck!!!
I will probably buy one eventually when the one I have craps out. The one I have is really light and works great so I just can’t bring myself to upgrading from something that works great just to save an ounce or two. Plus I hate having to charge too many things. I am carrying a smaller brick charger than I did last time so my electronics are actually lighter even with a couple of extra AAA batteries. I learned last time that gear does not get you to the end. It can help but the trail is 90% mental.
Your previous thru vlog helped inspire & inform me for my 2024 thru. Thank you. I started Jan 11 with the same zero degree quilt you have & switched to a 20 degree in March just before SNP. With a March start this time, have you considered a lighter but not as warm quilt? Happy trails.
My old quilt is still in good shape and the nice thing about quilts is it is easier to vent them if you get warm. Plus it would just save a couple hours of ounces and it isn’t worth the money. I do have a cheap Amazon quilt I can always switch to but I probably won’t. I still plan on finishing by the end of June before the heat.

Yep. Plenty of room. Not a bear vault fan. Don’t like the weight and the fact it is a hard shell that takes up too much room. I think they are good but just not my preference.
It’s down. As far as condensation that is something that single wall tents have to contend with it but I have even had condensation in a hammock. You just learn to deal with it and try to mitigate it.
Main reason is I live on the east coast and it is easier to get to for me. I have friends and relatives up and down the east coast. Plus I really enjoy the social aspect of the AT. I am really curious about how it will differ from the last time.
lol. Yep I did say that. Since I am leaving later, I am probably going to run into some full shelters. Plus it is nice to have the flexibility to shelter or tent. We shall see what I do this time.

I agree. You won’t see another video this long unless it is summit day. I made the gear one longer because if I didn’t , I would have about 100 questions about stuff. As far as subscribers, I am happy to share the info but don’t want to focus on subscriber counts and all that other stuff. Not trying to become an influencer lol. I just want to hike and share for family, friends, and anyone who is bored and wants to watch a 56 year old hike lol. I usually shoot for 10-15 min daily videos.

My recommendation would be to add a pill or two of diarrhea tablets, as this can save a life.

I saw somewhere that the trail was closed south of Damascus due to the hurricane damage.
They have made great progress and should be all open when I get there. There will be a few reroutes but no problem.

I do keep in touch with several hikers from 2018. FunSize is married and living in Canada with her husband whom she met on the PCT in 2016.

The biking gloves are Brzsacr. Found them on Amazon. The winter ones are Kyncilor.

Yep. Plenty of room. Not a bear vault fan. Don’t like the weight and the fact it is a hard shell that takes up too much room. I think they are good but just not my preference.
How is the condensation in the tent? Is your quilt down or synthetic? If down do you worry about it getting wet from condensation?
It’s down. As far as condensation that is something that single wall tents have to contend with it but I have even had condensation in a hammock. You just learn to deal with it and try to mitigate it.
