Why was Bill kicking the bird. If the dog isn’t flushing the bird out for the hunter, what’s the point. If the owner knows where the bird is, and is telling the dog where to go, that’s hunting??? It’s not hunting when the guy is kicking the bird out of the brush and then shooting it.

Gotta remember that. "I'm going try not to over control", a dog that is out of control!

This is a really clever way to select Dogs
I run Trials on wild birds but im pretty sure you can select good lines from these trials
    Its awesome

I have agree with "Dillon's" comment. These dogs are not remotely broke - except one or two perhaps. You could get to the top rung in this sport fairly quickly just by having a better trained dog.
The inherent challenges of this sport - as I see it - is that the birds are synthetically concentrated to a confined area which requires a dog that handles under foot. Not productive for the bird engine dogs we typically aspire to have when wild bird hunting. This looks like a great flushing dog sport though.

hello, I'm wondering what it means for a dog to be broke, novice hunter and first time gsp owner here.

    • @shug2795
      @shug2795 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@clockfingerboards Broke is a vernacular within the dog world meaning steady through-out the flush, shot and fall. Many hunters will tell you they don't want their dogs steady and then you get a plethora of excuses for why they didn't put the time and effort into finishing their dogs. Regardless of what you hear, there are NO advantages to an unsteady dog.

Some of these guys yell at their dogs more then the yokels I run into at the state game area's back home. Whistle blowing, screaming, cussing. And most of them don't have a clue about teaching the "Whoa" command.

Just goes to show you that hunting safely is the best way! The guy who wins every year stienback his dogs at least stay until the bird falls from what I've seen they don't move after they point and they are still retrieving faster than the guys who let there dogs run in and he doesn't have to worry about a bird getting trapped because they are truly whoe broke. To the other competitors I understand the thought behind your training but you can't beat a finished pointer wit dogs who are unsteady and it is not safe for your dog don't take a chance shooting over a running dog at a low bird!!!

Well heck I may piss a few folks off but my great uncle raised pidgeons for field trials and he bitched on Dad fightin chickens. Dad said whats the difference? Uncle Ted never bitched anymore. Kick a raised bird up shoot it then fido brings it back sometimes not dead? Gamefowl forever!

I understand the competition and the idea behind it. Don't agree with the hunter tactics. I don't agree with the low shots, and disregard of direction of shooting.
First hunt they show had low shots, and 1 shot directly into the camera direction.
Very bad hunting habits and yelling at the dog doesn't help.

My GSP Is hanging his head in shame by some of the pointer work. Bumping birds, not retrieving birds, dropping birds. Not exceptional pointer work.

Because the bird was low. If he hadn't shot it the dog probably would have snatched it out of the air

Brittanys are used for effective wild upland hunting this is simulation with pen raised birds. Gsp and pointers are right for this type of game. Get a cooperative, intelligent, spaniel for western wild upland birds.

I know this will not make some of you happy. But from what I see here these are the worst dogs possible. Especially if you hunt ruffed grouse in the thick. These dogs are Way too far and way too fast. I've had too many guys show up with their supposed multi $1000 pure bread champion bloodline dogs do nothing more than ruin the hunt. Leave your dog home let's take my mixed breed that I've trained to flushing and retrieve. A much calmer and relaxed hunting environment.
