    Agree with Andy. Obnoxious behaviour and in the amateur game he’d have got lamped. Marler seems to thrive on this sort of thing and being in the limelight trying to be funny. He’s a typical bully boy prop. I’m not saying they all are, but I saw lots like Marler playing club rugby for 35 years. I’m English by the way, so no axe to grind.

    I agree that Marler had no idea about the medical status of Heenans mother. His utterance is juvenile banter which might fly with a circle of adolescent friends who know each other. But he wasn't with a circle of friends, he was in a professional environment and on LIVE TV! I like Joe but sometimes thinking isn't his strong point. The ban is deserved and he should seek some advice from the club about behaviour.

      You’re both absolutely correct, and now he has quite clearly lied about it his position as an international ref is at the minimum compromised, as for Marler, given his previous a 12 month ban and 40k fine should have been given to send a message

  • @struancochrane753
    @struancochrane753 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    The Big take away from this for me was, as AG pointed out, is the RFU circumnavigating the World Rubgy guidelines on this. The RFU statement said they had taken his previous poor disciplinary record into account.....and then said they had gone in at, what is world rugby's entry level, suspension and suspended 66% of it for 12 months. What sort of example does that set? Reply RFU or player on that question.
    Good point AG well made.

    Are people seriously entertaining that Joe Marler didn't know about this players mum being in hospital? Of course he did. Sure you can't say that with 100% surety but he said it twice specifically to him, didn't say the same thing to anyone else on the pitch for the entirety of the game (despite being his go to phrase). He definitely knew in my opinion.

    • @thewomble1509

    I'll probably get called out because I'm a Saffa, but this is another example for me of the RFU failing to act on their own while calling out other unions. Regardless of how innocent the ref is, that ref shouldn't have been in control of that game. Same thing if an international team have voiced (not publicly) their unhappiness with a particular ref, it's better for all to use another ref to avoid any outcry.

      @cybertrophic ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So if that is the case, why ignore Heenan’s assault on Marler and the Bear player who punched Baxter from behind when it all kicked off?
      The anti-Quins bias remains.

  • @cybertrophic
    @cybertrophic ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Let’s be blunt - it was a throwaway bit of sledging. Heenan was baiting Marler before they arrived at the scrum and Marler basically threw out a bit of a shit line to tell him to do one.
    Anyone saying Dixon is biased, think about this: Marler says something questionable (not racist, or any actual trigger phrase), without any knowledge of what Heenan’s mum was going through and Heenan then punches him twice and tries to strangle him after grabbing his face.
    How, in all this anti-Quins/anti-Marler diatribe, is the fact an *actual* assault goes unpenalised, whilst the Bears PR team went into overdrive to make Marler into the pantomime villain.
    The RFU got this very wrong - if we are trying to sanitise the game, how can you justify, in any way, ignoring the physical attack on live TV because a player can’t hold their temper? By any yardstick, Heenan should have been banned for his reaction, if Marler is going to be banned for a bit of poor banter.
    The fan of worms they opened is basically that any player can appeal to the ref at any point about having their feelings hurt and get an opponent immediately carded and banned. That’s the precedent they have set for refs around the world at every level of the game.
    As for crucifying Marler - he obviously wasn’t expecting a player who had been quite happily giving him grief to explode over a generic low-grade insult the way he did. He apologised when he found out why. End of.
    Move on, people.

    Any referee that's told you its a 100% red card is completely lying! at the very most under the circumstances of the game its a penalty and that's it.... if he said it to the ref then yes its a clear red but towards another player on field there is not a single referee that hands out a red for that... its simply not true

    Agree with wrong ref for the game and the rubbish disciplinary process. What JM said wasn't smart, however I was taught "sticks and stones".... When did professional rugby become so preppy? It's a contact sport and people act out of character from time to time. I might not like what he said but I would defend his right to say it. When did professionals become so emotionally weak?! It's a good example to kids of how not to act on both parts in my book.

How he wasn't red carded on both occasions baffled me because the referee and tmo picked up both incidents. Had a welsh player made a remark to itoje or vunipola and was heard would have had a life ban because of their skin colour double standards. The alyn wyn one was sexual assault. How does his current ban get reduced with his history. Glad to see him out of the game

    Just my view. Don’t expect anyone else to agree.
    Could be a generation raised on iPhones, SM and TikTok. Created a crave for attention and narcissism. The opposite of team dynamic and culture. Acting like a fool for ‘likes.’
    There’s an honesty about players like Richard Hill, Wilkinson, Fickou, Dupont, Tuigamala, Jason Robinson. They are/were class. Let their skill speak. Knew the best way to silence an opponent was to smash him/ out scrummage and dominate / gas him with pace and score.
    I don’t think I’d enjoy the dude’s company.

    You’ve gotta be careful lads judging this legend. You are legends yourselves, however you find yourself calling other players. Calling a mum a ‘xxxxx’ isn’t something you wouldn’t hear in the club house as a bit of bants and a bit of a joke back in the day. Howler I totally appreciate the level which which Joe is at, which should be an example, as he’s on the main stage. Getting bashed into the head, like yourselves, that many times, over so many years, on an already fragile brain (As Joe admits himself) he could be struggling to make sense of life and what he should and shouldn’t be doing. I totally sympathise with this. If you’ve had a few knocks, especially in the forwards, everything we think, and think is right or wrong, is totally put out of the window over time. Very difficult to explain and understand. When I could see I was not fitting in, I exaggerate myself to try and fit in. Mental health can’t be explained, but I do think it has to be factored in when the kangaroo court is in session. I’m not saying Joe is mental, far from it, I belly laugh when he’s being interviewed when I know he’s not enjoying the moment, I’m assuming a type of coping mechanism. It seems he’s facing his fears which is admirable. But as a man, meat and 2 veg, who played rugby, at a very low level compared to you guys and Joe, I think there’s more to it. All the best to everyone. X

      @@ABC-dw7pe If Marker was sued in his own capacity or taken to court, he would be found Not Guilty. It is NOT defamation to his mother at all. The entire rugby world world know what Marler said was just sledging and far from the truth. It is more how the spectators react after hearing what was said. You surely won't survive during a cricket match against the Aussies. You will run of crying the first session.
      Sledging is something you just laugh off.
      The next thing... If I call you a sissy on the field, is that abuse? The term abuse should be replaced with sledging. That will make more sense. The Rugby rules want to leave everything for interpretation. That's the problem.
      How would you react if Marker said: "Your father is a gigolo"? Is that abuse? Or is it not that bad because it was the mother? People would have laughed if Marler said that. The only difference here is that unfortunately, his mother was in hospital. If Marlin didn't know that, then all he did was sledging. Again, is sledging abuse or written in the law?

It's not speeded the game up you watch a game from the 70s the injuries are less because less play club's don't stay and have a sing and a boat race no meeting new friends no blazers looking smart and belonging to something the law changes no competition for the ball at scrums ball put in the second row might as well tap and go 50 20 great if you've got touch judge's and camera's what about the ref on his or her self water coming on every two minutes first aiders on for cramps the law is head injuries only unless it's bad the club tried to get as many teams at home to get money behind the bar it now cost to have a team one drink and gone after food stop looking at the top look at the bottom or die

    Marler is a loose cannon, on and off the field of play. In my humble opinion his game has deteriorated over the months, his attitude is not humble and he thinks he is above the law. You're not funny mate and you bring this great game down to the level of comedic football. You think you're great being interviewed, you're not, you are challenging to watch and to listen to. Pack it all in now mate and open a restaurant somewhere.
