Thank you, Reid. I often return to this video over the years for your soothing dulcet tones. Very relaxing voice you have mate. I loved the tutorial years ago and have watched these for years. I hope you’re doing well mate. Cheers.
i recently changed my mountain bike from a crappy square peg system to a solid crank, it now rides much better and with a slightly shorter pedal stroke i don't keep scraping the pedal on the ground!!!
oh my gosh, thank you for this video -- single mom here with crank issues with my son's bike. we will do it together then he'll know too! happy biking!
I've an all Aluminium bicycle, figured out the way to dismantle; however I'd love to fit the bottom bracket like say for good, and so I don't need frequent replacement, thank you, for the show and tutorials,
All techs should watch this as an excellent example of how to present a video tutorial. So many leave the camera running while they perform some tedious and repetitive action; also, using still shots as illustration is far superior to simply moving the video in closer. Narration stays on task the entire time with no inane digressions or gratuitous profanity. You'd think this would all come naturally, but apparently not. So, good work and thanks for posting.
Gosh, thanks a lot, William S. That video made almost nine years ago was my first tutorial and first ever disassembly of a bottom bracket! Being self-critical I only see the flaws. It was nice of you to see the good points, which I myself had not known of before.
If I found this video 4 minutes before, I would have saved 20$. But for the future, I love you for my whole life. Remeber it. You're a hero, now. You saved lives!
i would like to thank u very much u encouraged me to remove my old sprocket and put on a new 1 and thanks to this video i was aware of where the bearings were and why the there is no rubber seal near the pedal arm thank you
Hadn't messed with this type of fix in years! I am glad I watched I had forgotten about the reverse thread. I woulda gone at it until it was stripped if it wasn't for your vid. Thanks.
Hello you, me again. Just letting you know I used your video's to rebuild the bottom bracket on my old Mongoose looptail. Went without a hitch thanks to you dude!
Good video. I was looking for instructions how to remove the bottom bracket on my kid's Dawes Blowfish to make it a strider bike. This video gave me the info I needed.
Here's one thing I know from taking apart my crank system yep I to have an american one piece crank and I used red lithium Greece which is used in bearings in GM vehicles and I had to tighten the bearing housing because they made a clicking sound when I tightened everything up it stopped clicking
thanks very much for this video. i had to tear my bottom bracket down. turns out my right side bearings were shot. the ring was broke and the bearings were laying inside the frame. fixed it earlier this evening. never tore one down, but your video was extremely helpful
this helped alot as i was stripping down an old bmx for the frame, but im stuck in one place, you see where the bearings sit. i want to remove that to put in a new style bottom bracket. PLEASE HELP! :)
And one more thing the grease they usually put on there is so thin that it's easy to collect dirt but the grease I used is good for 500 degrees fahrenheit and I don't have very much dirt on my bearings because I loaded my bearings with grease
could the grease been anti seize? you put anti seeze on threads to make them not rust. anyways thanks for the video it was exactly what i was looking for
Nice vid BUT after your removed the nut and washer there is that one piece that sometimes does not come out by hand. What is the name of the tool to remove that?
You absolute star. Bought a second hand bike, it was new less than 3 years ago. And it had this style of crank, and everything else on it is non standard too. Incredibly infuriating, can't find replacement parts.
Reid, Your mastery of the English language is outstanding, and I feel I should visit America simply to improve my vocabulary. I'm from Australia - an outpost on the outer rim. We say 'thing' for stuff, just like Smurfs say 'smurf' for stuff.
That brown nasty sticky gunk on the race & bearing is I think called kreoslole something like that most Asian parts are shipped by see its meant to stop Corrosion from the salt water. In my automotive shop all my brake disks drums ect. Come covered in it on bearings I think they mix it with grease. I may be wrong. But I always clean & re grease all new bikes I get hope this helps. Peace
my bike is all rusty i tried unscrewing that nut but it was rusted over and wouldn't budge i hit the end of the wrench with a hammer and it just bent i didn't think of trying to turn it the other way
of course for any type of freestyle a 2 or 3 piece crank is best. but for general riding a 1 piece would do. I have had my stock 1 piece bend on me riding dirt jumps on my first decent freestyle bmx. this is for people that might need advice in this area. They seem to be the same style as a freestyle 1 piece. I know they have 2 types of American bottom brackets such as this caged or loose ball bearing and sealed cartridge with cups installed. Typically not found in bmx anymore.
REID, YOU WON'T FIND LOOSE BEARINGS WITH THE ONE-PIECE CRANK OFTEN. IT'S HARD TO PUT LOOSE BEARINGS IN A ONE-PIECE CRANK. I'VE DONE IT AND IT HELPS BY HAVING THE FRAME STRIPPED DOWN WHERE YOU CAN LAY IT ON ITS SIDE. JUST MY OPINE. GOOD VIDEO!!
how can i get out bearing cups? i have same type of bearings on my old gt bmx bike. If you take bearings out then you can see the cups where should be bearings inside and i cant get the cups out. Help please!
my bike has the same type of bracket but it needs to be replaced because the part were the chain goes is dented but the left pedal is stuck is there anything i can do? Maybe break the pedal?
OH YES, THOSE ARE 5/16THS BEARINGS IN CASE I MISSED IT. NICE VIDEO, AGAIN. LOOSE BEARINGS HAVE THE ADVANTAGE OF SMOOTHER OPERATION, LONGER LIFE AND SUPPORTING MORE OF A LOAD. THANKS AGAIN.
hi man well i got my bmx bike about 9 mouths ago and i have 3piece cranks and the bottem bracket in this video. But i need a new bottem bracket and axal so can u sugest a bmx bottem bracket that will fit its a stolen getaway 07 bmx please help me thankyou
Believe it or not, I've actually had a one piece crank like this that fatigued and sheared right off! Definitly the most reliable type of crank, but its still possible to fail!
This is a "Ashtabula" One Piece Crank (O.P.C.) style bottom bracket crankset. An old style that was popular in America. You could update the title and/or details so that searches for the proper name can find your video more easily. Great Video, thanks for posting.
err correction, the one piece cranks WAS the strongest. They tend to bend and snap for bmx bikes... its actualy the lightest cranks you can get. the strongest so far are Profile 3 piece cranks. Jus though you would like to know lol.
lol. The way you speak you speak though, seems so patient and confident, it gives a strong illusion that wow, this guy really knows what he is doing. Fake it till you make it Reidy.
at the point you said Aaah but that , same thing . in between I you just blown my mind. cause if you were correct , I would die to know how did they do it :)
When i do this i USE park tool poly lube grease to regresses the inside of my one pice crank one of my friend did this to his BMX bike crank and used park tool poly lube and he said it made his BMX bike crank work like a brand new crank after he greased it with park tool bike grease
lol get a mis sealed...its soooooooooooo much better!! omg im so glad i spend the money on new cranks rather then having my shitty open bottom bracket thstam ade so much noise and came loose in like a day
Thank you, Reid.

Thank you. The left hand nut was killing me. Thanks for the directional info. Wouldn't be able to do it without you!

Diana Tuggle. Haha. Crack issues.
And why don't you have a husband...?
Thanks, I've got an old (presumably 80's) Schwinn I'm restoring, couldn't find any other videos with this type of assembly.
I'm "resto-modding" a mid '80's 12 speed huffy road bike.
I never thought the nut was reversed threaded.
Thank you so much for posting this video!
Lll
I like your kind nature. And I appriciate the amount of detail that you put in this video.
I've an all Aluminium bicycle, figured out the way to dismantle; however I'd love to fit the bottom bracket like say for good, and so I don't need frequent replacement, thank you, for the show and tutorials,
Thank you for making this video! You're such a blessing. I'll finally be able to install the pedal assist sensor to the schwinn I'm trying to convert.

Hello you, me again. Just letting you know I used your video's to rebuild the bottom bracket on my old Mongoose looptail. Went without a hitch thanks to you dude!
Nice video man! I appreciate the detailed pictures and extra knowledge you provided. Thanks for making this, I'm off to tear apart my bottom bracket!
I like your pace. You keep moving and are interesting. Thanks!
Good video. I was looking for instructions how to remove the bottom bracket on my kid's Dawes Blowfish to make it a strider bike. This video gave me the info I needed.
I have a classic Schwinn exercise bike and I think it is the same as this bike so, this should be very helpful for me to pack or replace the bearings.
impressive how you were able to unscrew cone with your big toe.
Here's one thing I know from taking apart my crank system yep I to have an american one piece crank and I used red lithium Greece which is used in bearings in GM vehicles and I had to tighten the bearing housing because they made a clicking sound when I tightened everything up it stopped clicking

this helped alot as i was stripping down an old bmx for the frame, but im stuck in one place, you see where the bearings sit. i want to remove that to put in a new style bottom bracket.
PLEASE HELP! :)
@010194jpable try using pliers or a wrench to unscrew the pedal
And one more thing the grease they usually put on there is so thin that it's easy to collect dirt but the grease I used is good for 500 degrees fahrenheit and I don't have very much dirt on my bearings because I loaded my bearings with grease
Thank you so much I have not ridden my bike for so long bc I thought it was broken this helped a lot thank you
could the grease been anti seize? you put anti seeze on threads to make them not rust. anyways thanks for the video it was exactly what i was looking for
its the same size but the bearing is sealed and you just push it in like bearings on a skate board or roller skates
Nice vid BUT after your removed the nut and washer there is that one piece that sometimes does not come out by hand. What is the name of the tool to remove that?
Outstanding video - Best I've found on the topic - thanks for posting.
Is there a benefit to replacing the caged bearings in the bike with caged bearings that have a greater number of bearings?
You absolute star.
Bought a second hand bike, it was new less than 3 years ago. And it had this style of crank, and everything else on it is non standard too.
Incredibly infuriating, can't find replacement parts.

The outter bearing cup don't have that hexagon shape to losen it up. it just has holes in it, what do i do about that?
my bike is all rusty
i tried unscrewing that nut but it was rusted over and wouldn't budge
i hit the end of the wrench with a hammer and it just bent

Are you still doing vlogs ? This was years ago & my first time to see your video. GOD BLESS! 🙏😇
can replace a loose ball bottom bracket with mid sealed bearings
@ampdavolts if my bmx crank are similiar to yours can it works and inside is it all are the same?
How often do you clean it

I couldn't get the 2nd part to come off, after you use the wrench.
OH YES, THOSE ARE 5/16THS BEARINGS IN CASE I MISSED IT. NICE VIDEO, AGAIN.

how to change the chainring????????
hi man well i got my bmx bike about 9 mouths ago and i have 3piece cranks and the bottem bracket in this video. But i need a new bottem bracket and axal so can u sugest a bmx bottem bracket that will fit its a stolen getaway 07 bmx please help me thankyou
Would you be able to use the bb from a one piece crank set ina 3 peice set ?
titanium will rival steel at i think pretty much anything... ?
how do i remove the sprocket please help
Gray color could be metal shavings due to an insufficient amount of grease in the BB.
They still use those bearings on the cheaper bikes, I BMX so I have sealed.
Good video
Thumbs up
Why not replace the bearings?
aye what if u cant get that pedal bolt to unscrew.....in other words HELPP!!
Great Job!
This helped me a lot on my kids bike.
Thanks for your effort.
"...that way they self-tighten when a fellow is riding." Lool, luv it.
Believe it or not, I've actually had a one piece crank like this that fatigued and sheared right off! Definitly the most reliable type of crank, but its still possible to fail!
how do u get inside the bottom bracket? Do u turn it or u use a hammer or something to hit it loose?
This is a "Ashtabula" One Piece Crank (O.P.C.) style bottom bracket crankset. An old style that was popular in America. You could update the title and/or details so that searches for the proper name can find your video more easily.

mis sealed? What is that?

Water in oil turns it gray, maybe it's from water? If you ever check your engine oil and it's gray, BAD NEWS! Bad head gasket!
