If there no discoloration to enamel on the stator, or smoke pouring out from the diodes in the rectifier, don't worry about it.
I had a small case hairpin to 343 degrees for over an hour strait, torture testing it, after being rebuilt into a 180, then reconfigured to 240, and ran at 350+ degrees, also for an hour strait.
You could sear a steak on it. No issues at time of testing, or weeks afterwards of using it hard, on the daily.
I heard the enamel that insulates the wire can go to 400 or so before charring..
Would take some crazy abuse to get that hot. I had to work at it pretty damn hard to get it above 300.

That’s what I thought when I got a new alternator.
the coil pack gets even hotter. I measured mine (old alternator) and to went up to ~290F with the outside at 240F. I’ve also seen specs for a modern regulator and it had three thermal shutdown points selectable 240F, 280F and 300F. The temperature is measured in the regulator region so the coils can get even hotter.
for example 3d printed annealed plastic PLA can held up to 350F.

Yes people know that anything on the engine compartment will be hot bit as a technician myself i can tell you that extreme hotter then what you were getting is often a poor ground of the alternator case to the mounting point so it a valid concern when people ask those questions. It's a good habit especially with older vehicles to clean your grounds keeping the resistance to a minimal bc that will cause the alternator to perform poorly and take it out eventually. The more resistance the more amperage it will pull to satisfy what the vcm is requesting.

My alternator was very hot but I didn't have the truck running at all. It was off all night and I had disconnected the batteries for 2 hour charging before connecting again. After 5 minutes from when I reconnected the batteries, I touched the alternator and I couldn't keep my hand on it for more than 3 seconds before it burned like hell. Is that normal? Again I never started the truck AT ALL, just reconnected the fully charged batteries. Shouldn't it only get hot when/after running? Please give me an opinion, I'm buying a new alternator tomorrow. Batteries died on me while truck was running the night before.

It sounds like you have something going on somewhere else in the vehicle or there is a constant parasitic drain in the vehicle.
You can always check alternator performance/health with a simple voltage/multimeter. The alternator should see the same voltage as the batteries when the vehicle is off (12.XX) and then be in the 14 volt range when the vehicle is running.

Well maybe for a short time, however.... The power has to come from somewhere. The alternator is the sole provider of electrical energy for everything, all the on board draw, as well as battery charging and other additional loads.
Without the alternator, you'll have nothing to work with in very short order. Unless you have a massive headway bank, but ya still have to charge it somehow.
Every single watt consumed in a vehicle comes from the alt.
The most important piece of equipment in the car. Without it, you'll be stranded in short order, never mind the tunes not cranking.
I see lots spend thousands on equipment, only to sidestep the main source itself. $700 is nothing compared to all the $ in equipment some have, and in my opinion, a wise investment.
