    I found a Stargazer skillet in the Goodwill shop for $15 it was my deal of a lifetime! The rest of my iron is Lodge and Wagner and I am very happy with all of them. Great video as always waiting for the iron shootout.

      Can’t beat that. I just bought the 12” seasoned skillet a few weeks ago. After tax and shipping and all it was $154.61. Worth every penny at that price. $15.00 you can’t beat it.

    Wow. Everyone whining about the price. Less than a dollar a day for the first year for something that will serve you the rest of your life. Sure there are cheaper options and if you are not one to splurge then you wouldn't get it. It is an heirloom piece. It would be a great wedding, housewarming, or Christmas present that is timeless. If you like all utility with no romance buy a lodge, or if you have no soul buy a Chinese pan.

    I just got the "Heather" that is reviewed here. Best cast iron I have ever bought. Everything was as described on this video. I also needed the extra flat bottom for my stove, where something like a Lodge would not work well. This skillet works perfectly on it. The Heather is a tad small. I can cook two pork chops on it. Its not big enough if cooking for more than two people. Might also mention it takes awhile to get these when you order. Might be more than a couple months. But worth the wait. I also would recommend ordering the glass lid.

    Hi Mr. Rollins, that hole in your cast iron pans does serve a purpose. It is to stick the handle of your spoon into. Then your spoon drips into the pan and not on your counter. Try it. you'll like it. keep up the good work.

    As the bacon heats up, the pores of the pan open up accepting the bacon grease. Best way to season the pan! Cook fatty meats the first few times on a new skillet! First few uses might not be as non-stick but it builds up over time!

    Fun tidbit. In 1976 was working in Chicago at O'hare airport. The baggage heading to China was almost too heavy to lift. The reason was that most had cast iron pans in them. Apparently they were tough to come by overseas and tourists took as many as they could fit back with them. Had people pay a $100 overweight fee rather than give up even one pan.

      Finex, Field, Stargazer, Marquette, Borough Furnace, or Smithey. Any of these are more compelling and also less expensive. Not to mention that these all exist to try and be half as good as an old Griswold or Wagner which you could also find cheaper.

    $395 for a 12" cast iron skillet!!!!!
    Hand made...Yes.
    Lighter weight...Yes.
    Smoother...Yes.
    BUT:
    My heavier $29, Lodge 12", stripped, lightly sanded, and now well seasoned cooks like a dream!!!
    At those prices, that's 13.6 Lodges and a little elbow grease to 1 Butter Pat.
    If you are wealthy, maybe.
    My $29 Lodge will still service my great grand kids.
    Just sayin.

      Sally - I have commented before, on other cast iron videos, that it is in some people's nature, to want to "break in", or "tweak" a new piece of equipment (tool, kit, housewares) FOR THEMSELVES - FROM SCRATCH. I happen to be one such person, as it seems you are as well..😁

    • @steveskouson9620

      Here in Arizona, I can get a 12 inch Lodge, for less
      than $20. $395? Almost 20 of them. Say, I only get
      10. And a random orbiting Skil sander, for $40. The
      paper will be another $10. I've now got 10 SMOOTH,
      seasoned 12 inch skillets, an orbital sander, paper,
      and $50.00 left.
      (Anyone want a $30 Lodge 12 inch skillet?)
      If I had grandkids, I would, But, with well over
      100 first cousins...)

    • @steveskouson9620
      @steveskouson9620 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Sally, I agree!
      $400 for a single 12 inch skillet?
      I can turn a Lodge skillet into the
      same finish. If I do 10, buy the sander,
      and buy the sandpaper, I still come out
      $50 ahead.
      Wally World, as well as Kroger has the
      12 inch Lodge, for less than $20. $380
      pays for a LOT of sanding. (And, I like
      the Lodge helper handle better. You
      can get some grip AROUND it.)
      Sorry Kent!

    Thanks for the review, Kent. I have to be honest here. If I were going to spend that amount of money on a skillet, it would be on a high-end All-Clad and not cast iron. It's a great pan but cast iron just shouldn't cost that much in my opinion.

    • @melissadana7829
      @melissadana7829 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      May I suggest that you look into the Demeyere brand, specifically the Atlantis/Proline product, as a better alternative to All Clad? You won't find it secondhand like you can AC, but the handles are far more comfortable, and the finish is better.

      @@joligarcon5970 I have a Field and it's the best out there, bang for buck, IMO. Paid $135, which is the most I would ever spend on cast iron. Lodge is cheaper, been around forever, but can't touch the Field skillet. It's half the weight of a Lodge, dead flat and polished smooth.

    • @LordStanley94
      @LordStanley94 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joligarcon5970 What’s your take out of all the Cast Iron’s out there, Lodge (although I think their QA/QC) is abominable, sanding it down and seasoning it oneself, it does the job. My Lodge is completely non-stick after doing it per Kent’s method. Oven 5-7 times. Non-Stick Perfection. Do you own any of the expensive ones? Or just Lodge? Thanks! Thoughts?

  • @paladin4570

    Looks good. Seems to cook good out of the box.
    I like you clean and reseason after every use usually as soon as I’m done cooking and before chuck. I use a wood spatula on the stove then dump the junk and hit with hot water a time or two.
    My wife gave me a piece of chain mail for cleaning at Christmas and it sat until mid February before I finally tried it. Now right after the steam clean I dump out all the water and give it a few swirls with that chain mail, hit again with hot water then back to the burner for heat then oil (I’ve used Grape Seed for two years now). To my shock, that chain mail has improved the surfaces of a couple of pans that have not made it through the shop yet. It has done no harm to any pan. I’m glad I broke down as that dog hunts.

    I wish I could find the article I stumbled on about lard and cast iron. As I remember this guy was a chemist. His conclusion was that GOOD lard was the best for seasoning. I kinda hear your point about lard going rancid, this guys take on it was that to properly heat and chemically change the lard fat, that it was so hot to actually change the fat into another type of inert material. Eventually that is pure graphite.

    Before you decide to go with something else cheaper remember that this is an amazing product that will last lifetimes and buying it helps keep Americans at work and feeding their families. I just picked up a Griswold #8 on letgo for 10 bucks but I do plan on buying as money of these cast iron USA made pans as I need and can (all different types of course) in the future just for the reasons above. They are all old griswalds and wagers except for my newist which is a stargazer which is still on the kitchen counter waiting to be seasoned. I think I paid about $90 for it, the rest all came from second hand stores and garage sales. They cost between 5-10 dollars each. Gotta love cast iron.

    I was not aware of these brands, well the two mentioned hitherto, but i am impressed. Yes the price is high compared to machined stock but blimey, that's what you are paying for. Handmade, American historic Craftsmanship that will do you and yours proud for another hundred or so years. Lastly guys, you are supporting American jobs and prosperity in these harsh times of global competition flooding the market with dross. I'm using old Griswold lodge. Considering a different brand. I love using the cast iron. My alclad and viking stainless steel pans sit without use now. Kinda sad seeing them expensive pans not being used. So you ask why. Cast iron just cooks better. If ya have oil in a pan it sits on the stove whether it's cast iron or not till it cools. You pour the grease off and clean when it's cool.
    I have a well seasoned flax seed cast iron pan. One drop of dish dawn soap and water and it's clean. Doesn't strip any seasoning off. I turn on the stove preheat and wipe with flaxseed oil. Sometimes I don't even. Preheat. Wipe off the excess. It's not a problem. And it's never sticky

    It's the packaging you're paying for 😄
    I've been looking for a great 2nd hand skillet but no thrift stores here seems to have any or not one that is right for me - size and form factor, non enamelled and I can very well strip the old seasoning and a little rust and start a complete new seasoning so condition isn't that critical as long as it's raw cast iron and not too rusted. But no luck so far (have people really thrown them out? They where once plentyful at fleamarkets etc. New cast irons are hard to find here as well)
    Settled for a 9" lodge. Gave it extra seasoning layers in the oven a few times and it's already great. Can be when I think it's time for a complete new seasoning I'll then smoothen the bottom a little as it's on the rough side - much more coarse than my 40 years (or so) smaller Høyang Polaris I like so much. But still it's great - even bacon doesn't stick.
    The fun thing is that on my infrared stove (they where once considered very modern - don't know what they're called in american) I find them way faster to heat up than my modern non stick pans - so fast that I don't miss induction - probably about 1 minute to reach 180 C while in the same time the Tefals would still be almost touchable. Most likely because the bottoms are just about completely black and thus takes the IR heat much better where as my modern pans are silvery shiny and therefore doesn't take the IR radiation as well.

    Kent, Shannon, I use metal tools, almost
    exclusively, in my cast iron. But, most of
    my CI is Lodge, and needs to be smoothed
    out. I use the "wear off the high spots, and
    build up the low spots" method.
    GREAT video, but $200 is a wee bit out of
    my price range.

      I've mostly removed the tops of the hills,

      I am a mechanic by trade, and we use a
      "surface prep" tool, to clean off gasket
      surfaces. Harbor freight sells them,
      that can mount on a drill.

    Awhile back I had mentioned to you about the quality of the cast iron pans from China. I said they made good dog dishes. I was at a flea market this weekend. Was talking to a guy that was selling cast iron. Was teasing him it looked like it all was Chinese junk. It wasn't it was all old even had one marked US Army. It was at least 18 inches across. We been talking just shooting the breeze. We we're talking about the Chinese stuff. Then his wife buds in an says she wouldn't even use it to feed dogs. She said the only thing they were good for was a frying pan toss. She said I'd end up in a body cast if she caught me using a good piece of cast iron for that game. Had a great time just standing around talking. An she made my day.

      I don't know of any quality cast iron being made in China today. It makes me feel sorry for the Chinese foundry workers who would rather make quality cookware. I have two 1960s vintage skillets that are made in Taiwan that are as good as the Wagner skillets from the same time.

  • @StellaWaldvogel
    @StellaWaldvogel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    No, they aren't cheap. And yes, you can cook great stuff in a Lodge, or even a $10 dollar store skillet from China. (And NO, those do NOT contain lead!) The cheaper ones don't heat as evenly, but you can solve that by pushing the food around in the skillet. And you can sand a Lodge down smooth. (But there are some who advise against this, since the bottom of the skillet is what retains heat.) You might even find old Griswold or Wagner for less than what Butter Pat costs for a skillet of the same size.
    But that's not the point.
    The point is that Butter Pat is making skillets on par with Griswold and Wagner - something that a lot of people said can't be done these days. (For one thing, use of the fine sand used in the old foundries has been banned by the EPA, as it's unsafe to breathe.) Dennis Powell simply refused to take no for an answer. It took three years (and a LOT of discarded prototypes) to figure out the process. You can read some about that here: www.lancastercountymag.com/interview-with-dennis-powell-founder-of-butter-pat-industries/
    It's rare to find ANY product made as well as it used to be. You can see a severe quality slide when comparing a current product to its equivalent made in the 20's, 30's, or 40's. Things are made of cheaper and cheaper materials, and there's no care or craftsmanship in the process.
    Butter Pat is bucking the trend, and I fully support that. Things are pretty uncertain now, but I purchased a skillet anyway because it feels good just knowing that Griswold-quality skillets are once again being manufactured. (And besides, it's pure pleasure to cook in it.) When this pandemic has run its course, I hope to get the full set, and some extras to give as gifts.

    I got the 12” stargazer a few weeks ago and love it. Not sure why Shannon is always obsessed with the packaging. It takes a hell of a hit to crack a cast iron pan in a box. I’m sure if it happens it’s extremely rare and these companies would certainly replace it if it arrived broken.

For that price I could buy enamel coated 'Les Cruset' and still save 70 dollars!! I know this to be true because that's what they were selling on QVC yesterday. They were selling a 4.5 qt.
