Not all of them. This is homeport. Some are in for repairs, replenishment, refits, etc. The sailors live in the area would still need time to get their bags, get on the ship, get ready for sea, cast the lines, and get out of the narrow port entrance.
@@CombatIneffective if this were true there would be plenty of warning prior to any attack due to intelligence and ships would be able to deploy without a problem. Ships in for yard work could not deploy due to maintenance needs. There are usually two and sometimes three carrier battle groups deployed at any one time in the Pacific and numerous ships and subs off the coast of San Diego preparing for deployment doing local operations. Also, more than half the crew live on the ship.
I have a story about a real life scramble while the US was being attacked. I used to live in the Burlington, VT area. Roughly in the area off the NW end of the Burlington International Airport runway. This airport is where the Green Mountain Boys of the Vermont Air National Guard squadron is based. They were flying F16s at the time (they have since switched out to F35s). The morning of 9/11 one of my roommates and I were glued to the TV as we watched the first World Trade Center building burn. We watched in horror as the second plane hit. It seemed like within a few minutes the F16s were screaming into the air. We were all used to hearing the jets take off, but this was obviously something COMPLETELY different. None of us had EVER heard them come out of the airport that loud and fast. That sound, and the purpose behind it, still gives me shivers. The planes headed directly south 260 miles to fly air cover over Manhattan. It didn't take them long to get there.
But if you listen to the recordings you find out that none of these scrambled jets found a single hijacked plane! …NEAD was very lame ! …They couldn’t get out of their own way…They were too busy passing info “up the chain” to verify reality from drill…it was a “who’s on first” situation…Meanwhile the hijackers were completing their mission…A very sad representation of Air Defense Command!

Well the Super Hornets are grouped in 4 the F35 go up in 2's. In Key West that is. Over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. All they do is play all day every day now. Some of the Super Hornets have blue missles on them. So they do nothing. But others don't, so I say. This will Never ever happen again. Hahahahahahahahaha I'm kidding, this is nothing new. We been doing this since Pearl Harbor. Wayyyyyy Worse losing War Ships then losing life and buildings comparing the two. So , now that I know 100% because I asked every single fly boy. At every single base I ever been to. Not to mention when I was younger in my 20's im now 43. I was in Mississippi in Gulfport. And those boys fly 24/7 also. Over and over and over all you see is the Fighter squadrons taking off and landing. So we have groups in the Gulf playing around and patrolling at same time. We have groups all up and down the east coast in the Atlantic. We have groups all up the west coast in the pacific. I know this with my own two eyes. Soooooooo, 9/11 happened on purpose. I'm not one of those conspiracy people. But this is my own opinion. With the amount of Fighter Jets we have in the air. Knowing now that CIA said we getting attacked. Days before it happend. Cap, the US Marine Corps is receiving both F-35B and F-35C. The B was to replace the AV-8B Harrier, and some F/A-18’s. The F-35C will be replacing the rest of the F/A-18’s for use on super carriers to supplement the Navy squadron in the carrier air wing. B model will only be used by LHD and LHA vessels. Another thing that might need to get modeled is the Evolved Sea Sparrow and the rolling airframe missile. The later is replacing CIWS on surface vessels.

The very first GR video I watched was like this one. I served in the USMC and I was angered. I learned quickly that these are just randomly generated simulations that are amazingly entertaining despite not super realistic. DCS has limitations. I think GR does a wonderful job and their team are hilarious!

The fact that so many Americans like you are so easily angered by a game simulation or war simulation shows how unprepared and untested you guys are in the event of an actual invasion. Nearly every single country in this world has been invaded, and many of the people know that no one's invincible. They know there are weaknesses in their nations and strive to improve it. But it's always the Americans that get overly butthurt when their country "loses" in a simulation because they can't comprehend the idea that there is no such thing as an invincible nation. They stull have the American Exceptionalism idea in side their head that makes them think America somehow is just so special that they'll never lose a war.
I think that if the chinese started moving and splitting on the other side of the pacific, every major target on the west coast would have armed up and be on high alert.
In a war scenario, I'd expect the Aegis/SM equipped ships in-port to be at least partially crewed and able to slave their missile batteries to either destroyer outside the harbor via data link. In theory, that should provide a lot of extra SAM protection. TRs airwing would be shore-based at NAS Lemoore which is 255 nm away.
yhea i dont see how war ships would be completely uncrewed at shore. there would likely be a skeleton crew on board for maintenance and also to be able to scramble defences.

The actual reality is that the US has for decades been able to track not only every single surface warship anywhere in the world, but in the 1980s they could detect when Soviet ships were **preparing** to leave port. Not even moving yet. The Chinese are even easier to detect. If subs are brought into the mix this attack never happens. I think to make it sporting it's better to be kind to the Chinese and leave them out.

The USMC will be using a combination of F-35B (for LHD/LHA operations) and F-35C (some marine squadrons are part of naval air wings). So you can opt Marines with F-35Cs.
There are several bases that were not mentioned in the scenario, you have Camp Pendleton that also has an air base (mostly helicopters), NAS El Centro that is only about 120 miles away, Yuma Marine Corps Air Station that is about 200 miles away, Also we have submarine base that would probably have subs out patrolling. And there is a training island off the coast of San Diego and I would assume there is some type of air defense there. And there is an auxiliary air base down in San Ysidro area that is part of the City of San Diego. Also we have killer dolphins that the navy trainings here as well.
Yeah the entire west cost and south west is like nothing but military bases. Any attack on the west cost is going up against the Marines, Navy and Air force air power. They are fucked. Not to mention the reverse engineered UFOs we got in area 51.... hahaha.

If they're going after San Diego their going to be dealing with like 8 different enormous bases, Coronado, Miramar, Pendelton, Ventura, Edwards, March, Vandenberg and 29 Palms. Not to mention the small one and the various airpots that have armed jets. March Alone would probably blow a carrier group out of the water >_>
There is some other stuff in nevada US army. I'm sure that storage depot would be remanned and shipping Patriot missile batteries out... Also a direct attack on American soil, the response would be nothing short of hell on earth. Until our advisories no longer existed...
I want to see the follow-up revenge strike of 2 squadrons of P-8 Poseidons, each carrying 11 AGM-84H/K SLAM-ER Harpoons on the Chinese carrier. With a squadron of F-35s to deal with the half dozen fighters they have left aboard. lol
There is one major factor not being included in on this; NAS North Island. That's where that cold dark carrier's aircraft would be based at. Even taking into account the base is primarily used for ASW planes and choppers, there are always some F/A-18s out there. So they'd be amongst the first to be scrambled and you'd likely have an additional dozen planes ready to go along with anything else that could be thrown together for Anti-Ship duty. And it definitely has additional SAMs and whatnot.
Love ALL of your videos!! These "what if" ones are definitely fun to watch and I am sure they are a big challenge to put together. I didn't read all of the comments so some of what I am about to say could already have been said - sorry in advance. The setup for this video sort of treats San Diego as if it is a lot more isolated as a military facility than it really is. I am not sure if they are too far away to be much help in this scenario, but you have both Edwards AFB (North of LA) and Vandenberg AFB (NW of LA on the coast). Also, there is a HUGE Navy T&E facility with Surface AND Air Search radars located up and down the coast of SoCal and also on at least some of the islands off the coast. The Sea Test Range itself is 36,000 square miles in size (that is the area in which the official testing typically takes place). You can get an idea what this looks like by googling NAWCWD Point Mugu Sea Range. Point Mugu is/was also a Naval Air Station. I am not sure what is still stationed there as in the early 2000's I believe much of the tenants of the base we relocated to China Lake (further North of LA) as part of the BRAC actions taken by the US Government and the DoD.
There are several more bases in range for the parameters of this scenario that are even closer than the LA bases: March Air Force Base and NAF El Centro.
The last time I passed Miramar and my tractor trailer, British were training in the new 35s. A whole bunch of fifteens, and 18s were doing touch and goes.
Wouldn't an attack sub/destroyer group assigned to shadow the group sink that carrier as soon as it was designated as a hostile? I get that this scenario was limited to air assets, but I would have to think that some of the air units would be tied up trying to defend the carrier from this.
Maybe this has been addressed before... Can the F35 "Murder Configuration" not transform to a "Stealth" configuration after launching the external mounted missiles? Surely the boffins could find a way to detach/dump the missile mounts after use?
I'd imagine that the brackets that connect pylons to the wings would still be pretty non-stealthy, but it's doubtful that those would have a combined >1m RCS. Would likely result in the belly aspect being non-stealth, but anything coming in from above the nose (like a missile, terminally guiding) probably wouldn't notice any difference. Still, it's a pretty niche capability that probably doesn't warrant the cost, development hours or mechanical complexity IRL
I have wondered this too- the idea to me is that the racks would not be too stealthy, but probably not make that much of an impact. My only concern would be the mounts that attach the racks to the wing might not be outfitted with the correct stealth coating and maybe will have enough edges to emit a presence to an AWACS or a ship/land-based radar.

I have a suggestion for an alternate history scenario that would be really interesting to see how it would play out. Back story: At 19:57, 27 October 1981 the soviet submarine S-363 (Swedish designation U137, which i will use during this text) ran aground at Torumskär in Gåsefjärden, close to the naval base in Karlskrona. They are trying to pull themselves off, but are unable to do so and reports this back to base at 21:00. At around 22:00 they are spotted by a Swedish fisherman, who reports his findings to the naval base in Karlskrona the morning after at 09:54. At 11:30 this is reported to the Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces. This of course leads to mobilization of Swedish forces. The coastal artillery are deployed to the area, manning both fixed and mobile artillery systems. They also deploy coastal rangers with access to different kinds of anti tank weapons that can be used, such as m/48 Carl Gustaf recoilless rifles. At around 19:00, reports state that a Soviet naval force are on it's way to rescue the submarine. The Prime minister Thorbjörn Fälldin gives the order: Hold the border! When the vessels are roughly 700 meters from the border, the Swedish artillery switches it's radars from peacetime mode to the frequency hopping war mode. Within 30 seconds the soviet vessels reduces their speed, and at 21:00 they stop at the border. At 02:30, the soviets decide to cancel the rescue mission, which was planned for 03:00. The scenario: What would had happened if the Soviet forces had not decided to cancel their mission, but instead pushed trough? Swedish forces in the area: 4x 152mm Artillery based at Tjurkö island Coastal rangers with heavy weapons deployed at Östra Hästholmen island. Submarine Neptun Första flygeskadern aka ÖB:s Klubba (Three wings of AJ37 Viggen, 64-96 aircraft in total. Known as The Commanders Mallet. Probably carrying 2xRb04, with air defence provided by J35 Draken and/or JA37 Viggen) Icebreaker Thule, parked across the path to U137 Multiple smaller vessels Soviet forces: U137, stuck on a rock. Destroyer Obraztsovyj (Kashin class) 1x Destroyer Kildin class 2x Corvette Nanuchka class 1x Frigate Riga class Most likely at least one more submarine Several support vessels
There's a movie about this but it happens on the coast of New England. You're leaving out in your scenario that the Soviet Air Force was heavily based around the Baltic. Latvia, Estonia and St. Petersburg were at the time home to enough MiG-23s to dwarf the Swedish Air Force, a regiment of MiG-25s at Monchegorsk, and two regiments flying Su-24s for all-weather attack.
99.99% of the time aircraft flying out of Miramar depart west bound due to prevailing winds. I watch them every day. Also the US forces would have a much larger detection radius.
Can you guys do a alternate Falklands War scenario where the Royal Navy task force is built around 2x modernised Malta class Aircraft Carriers (the unbuilt equivalent of the Midways) with Buccaneers and Phantoms? Maybe do an operation in place of the Black Buck Raid or one involving searching out and killing the Northern Argentine task force based around the Colossus Class Carrier "Veinticinco De Mayo" and her 2x Type 42 escorts? I'd be really curious to see the latter scenario. Love the content, keep up the fantastic work!
One additional thing! By 1982 with 4x (or more 3x by that time) Malta's in service the RN would have likely replaced the Fairey Gannet AEW with either the proposed P139 AEW Aircraft concept or E2 Hawkeye's. I think the latter. Just something to bare in mind
@@vader1a Nope the Maltas were WW2 designs that were cancelled by Atlees government in 1945. They were open hanger carriers and about 10,000 heavier then preceding Audacious class Armoured Hanger Carriers of which HMS ArkRoyal R09 and HMS Eagle R05 were members of. Its been calculated that the Maltas would have needed less modernisation work to make them viable modern fleet carriers in the 60s & 70s, which could have seen them being retained in service until the late 80s or early 90s. Wow Violet went full Queen beast mode there . Really enjoyed that one . I've been playing DCS for a month now only got F16 and Nevada map (plus free ones like A4 and Marianas) really enjoying it , I'm ex-Navy aircraft technician (British Junglie) so training is not as bad for me , using things like HSI and understanding terms is fine (well done to anyone who had no experience) . The only thing I have struggled with in Air-to-Air is the JF-17 . I swear the F-16 has real problems detecting and tracking it , the Flankers are even easier than I thought to take down . I managed to land the F16 on my second ever try . Been doing loads of cold start takeoff/landings and CAP missions against a variety of enemies (AI of course) being outnumbered no more than 3-1 . Once I manage to get a grip with Air-to-Ground and purchase Flaming Cliffs 3 I will go multiplayer , not feeling confident about going multiplayer right now as I'd be more of a hinderance to people . Anyone else in the early stages of DCS ? .
Don’t forget that the biggest base in the US (Pendleton) is about 40 miles north of San Diego city and March AFB is about 80 miles north east. And North Island has air assets you can see them from Point Loma
Given that any Chinese carrier group would be shadowed by a US sub since leaving its home port, the Fujian would probably be immediately sunk just after launching is A2A wave and it heads out toward SD. The anti-shipping wave would never even get into the air.

Just a little note the carriers air wing are generally at an airbase close to the carriers base where they go when the carrier is in port so they would likely be close enough for some of their plans to assist within this scenario. Can’t speak for west coast but east coast in Norfolk the air wings switches to NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach. So I would guess on west coast they air wing would be in the marine base.
I would love to see a follow up video with the whole US Fleet in San Diego; Carriers, LHAs, Destroyers, Cruisers, LCS everything hunting down the Chinese Carrier and the Type 003 meets up with some more destroyers and frigates but it only has its remaining aircraft.
I'm wondering how effective a swarm of drones would be against the ship's defense. 2-300 drones each carrying a 10lb shaped charge or a claymore type charge for crew in the open on carriers could crater the deck and stop air operations as well as take out the deck crews. Maybe Arma 3 can put this to the test.
I was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. There is one squadron on standby, maybe 2 planes, ready to go at any time. We have 4 squadrons. Black Nights, Vikings, Red Devils, and Vf-101 the training squadron. Vf-101 was the only f/a18 c/d. Everyone else had super hornets until the transition to f35. March Air Force base covers the west coast with ballistic missiles. Naval air station North Island also has around 2 to 3 SSN in Point Loma. One carrier is usually in port. Miramar also has three squadrons of v-22s. Three squadrons of ch53s two squadrons of c-130s. Sometimes, f-16s and f-15. Would spend a month on station cross traing. The only way we would be ready and waiting would be an early waring. Takes about an hour for the crews just to get to the missile bunkers. Also, there are rats in the bunkers that would routinely set off the alarms. Ask any questions. This is also public knowledge, so im not disclosing any secret information. But the rats might be top secret.
I'd like to believe that if china sent every piece of hardware toward the west coast, they would not even make it half way across the pacific and every bit of it all would reside forever more at the bottom of the sea.

All they do are launch satelites and test fire inert ICBMs into the Kwajalein Atoll off the Marshall Islands; they don't have any weaponry other than small arms. 18:00: Does anyone know how many CA compliant ARs it would take to shoot down a Chinese jet? I'm sure there's a lot of Californians outside of LA and San Deigo that would be more than willing to give it a try. I mean, if you put enough 5.56 into the air, it eventually functions like flak. 27:21: PLA cyber capabilities are unmatched... 28:57: Isn't there some legend about a Chinese general killing condemned prisoners in front of the enemy army? @18:00 it's an interesting question, I'm going to have to do some math on what the maximum altitude a round could reach. I would imagine if you had enough guys firing off rounds and saturating the air, if any made it to the right altitude it would be as bad as a small bird strike on the intakes at the very least. Of course with all of those bullets raining back down I'd wonder if they would do more damage to people and property on the ground.
I know this is an old video or if this has changed at all since I was USMC from 04 to 08, but Marines phased out Stingers and Avenger platforms during that time, so they wouldn't have them in this scenario. They were in fact retooling the Stinger Batteries to being standardized grunt units. I was deployed to Africa as an augment with 3rd LAAD back in late 2007 and the word at that time was that the USMC intended to completely retire the Stinger system and existing Stinger units be folded into other responsibilities, such as what we were doing in Africa which was being base security personnel. Don't know what we'd be using now, but that's just what I remember anyways.
Just in the San Diego port on cruz boat... went next to see the USS Enterprise, Aircraft carrier built in 1970... Never saw service. Great tour of boat.
I grew up in Bath Maine where both of the Zumwalt class destroyers were built, and its so strange hearing about them elsewhere because while growing up and watching them get built, I thought they were just normal ships, and had no idea of their significance. They’re awesome ships!
@@tetraxis3011 how so? They were definitely a huge waste of money for what they got back, but the ships themselves are literal engineering marvels. I’ve never heard anything bad about the ships except that they costed a lot of money.
A couple of things I think should have been considered in this scenario. You did not take into consideration NASNI in Coronado. This is where the carriers are docked and their would anywhere from 1 to 3 there. Sometimes, if they are coming in and leaving again, the fighter wing would be left on the ship. NASNI is the Pacific Fleet HQ and always has quite a few planes. Probably not all ready for combat as the base is a repair facility. 32nd Street Naval Base always has a lot of ships (I think you took that into account though). this is NOT where the carriers dock as they can't get in there. If the Chinese sent so many ships into the Pacific, by the time they got close to San Diego, we would have the entire Pacific Fleet either trailing them or on standby in positions where they could not approach get in range of San Diego or Los Angeles. In addition, air wings along the cost as well as inland would be notified and wings scrambled to the bases in San Diego and LA. In addition, the air radar on the coast is not something to be forgotten, though I doubt anyone really knows its capabilities. Our satellite systems can't be forgotten about either. It would be interesting to see how the Chinese would fair in a scenario where the US detected their fleet deployment and moved forces in preparation for some attack along the coast. I imagine that would take some thought and counting of available US assets that could be deployed.
I think the residents of Coronado would lose their shit over the emissions from the missiles if the Arleigh Burkes let loose while in port. The base switchboard would be lit up like a Christmas tree.
If you want it to be realistic : add escort ships for chinese carrier with cruise missiles and anti ship missiles + the strike would be coordinated (no j 15 going solo into the fight) and they would make an AWACS take off from the carrier as soon as possible plus you need to take into account the time necessary to put weapons and fuel and the US planes. (And there would most likely be 2 US carrier as generally 1/3 of the carriers that deployed. Also the j15 anti ship planes would be carrying pl 12 or 15 for long range self defense. Nato does the same, even in ground attack f18 generally have 2 aim120 and 2 aim9

I lived in San Diego for 5 years. It wasn't often that 2 carriers were in town at the same time. At least not for long. I know that the port can handle it. My father in law served with the Navy and said he remembers a time when 4 carriers were in port at the same time back years ago, but the usual here is 1.
Just had a thought while watching this one, dont know wether the americans do the same, but , when our carriers / ships go home to port, we generally land our air wings, so , perhaps the air wings from the carriers would also be available to scramble??

if i am not mistaken. that LCS is a Army vessel who hangs out and helps tracks vessels off nato borders. usually in Australian waters. & is rumored to have better tech advances than a fair portion of other military watercraft. i could be wrong though.
I know this is just a navy v. navy op however since it wasn’t mentioned up front I feel it’s important to add the fact that in real life there are USAF bases that would be “cranky” if the Chinese got even remotely close and would send the air defense standby aircraft immediately then followed by a ton of aircraft shortly there after. And there is also this tiny insignificant thing called NORAD. (North American defense) which is constantly watching everything even remotely close to all of North America and the Canadian Air Force will want to come play too. Lol! As always, such an attack would be preceeded by Chinese Subs getting as close to shore as possible and launching missiles to take out runways, radars, etc.

No F-35B at MiramarZ That'd be news to a lot of people. Anyway,, MCAS Miramar and North Island are only the two closest airfields. Well within aircraft range but a bit further from action are bases in Irvine (alsthough likely only helicopters nowadays), and a few bases in Los Angeles, and Imperial Valley. I suppose depending on how much a surprise attack a Chiense aircraft carrier might be, you could argue no aircraft would be loaded with weapons that can be used. Also, beside California Air National Guard, there is a multitude of light aircraft and vessels of the Coast Guard manybe not loaded with weapons but extremely capable surveillance. Additionally, commercial airdraft regularly fly in all directions up and down and around the coast at least out to 30 or 50 miles or so... It's very busy and I'm sure something like a Chinese aircraft carrier would be visible if not detectable at least 100 miles from the ooastline. In your scenario, you also suggest the Abraham Lincoln is currently ported in San Diego. Are you suggesting none of its aircraft is also local? Are you suggesting the entire air wing is deployed on another vessel and not spending time in San Diego for training purposes? From a Chinese logistics point of view, that would be some kind of achievement to disappear one of their 3 aircraft carriers long enough to sail across the Pacific to San Diego. It would have to involve at least one if not multiple refuelings and arrive at San Diego with practically empty fuel, ready to engage.. In a realistic situation, I'd expect that the US would be raising alarm bells once one of China's aircraft carriers had disappeared and be combing the entire Pacific looking for the ship using satellites, radar, visual sightings by commercial cargo and commercial aircraft, everything. So just raising questions about the realistic possibility of a surprise attack on San Diego... Slim and none beyond what you've accounted for in your proposed scenario.
This video brought to light something I have been thinking about a lot over the decades since VLS launchers. What stops a foreign aggressor from converting civilian cargo ships into launch platforms? Many missiles hidden in an inconspicuous trade ship. 20+ years ago the USA ramped up radiation detection in cargo ships entering US ports knowing bad stuff could slip through. But what about Mach 2+ missiles from a special cargo ship just entering US waters? Missiles fired at max distance. No need to get into port. I would love to see this simulation in the video run again with YJ-12 spawning from a location that coincides with both main shipping routes to major California ports and proximity to San Diego. The ultimate would be 2 or more converted attack cargo ships from multiple vectors as they approach the US west coast on differing routes. I'm hoping if such a simulation were run it would show that if you have a massive air defense ship in port, do whatever you can to keep the anti-air systems on. Your video of Russian attack on London definitely demonstrated this need if I remember correctly? The Royal Navy Destroyers were key players...
San Diego resident. MCAS flies F35s now. A month ago F15 from Oregon National Guard were cross training. Very often there are other "Red" squadrons flying here. F5, Israel's, other country jets. Etc. Don't forget Pendleton, 30 miles north. Mostly rotary wing, but can include attack helicopters. There are also quite often Asault carriers or destroyers off the coast of Camp Pendleton. There are also other air wings from other areas that practice near Catalina island.
MCAS Yuma is well within distance of SD (150 miles give or take), it has 5 F35 squadrons and 1 MQ9 Reaper Squadron. As is NAS Lemoore (250 ish miles) which has 15 Super Hornet Squadrons and 3 F35 squadrons, fuel probably wouldn’t be a problem as they can jump to MCAS Camp Pendleton or Miramar
Southern California has a concentrated Military presence from Camp Pendleton to MCRD San Diego (USMC bootcamp) and Navy bootcamp... plus the Marine Recon and Navy Seal training happens basically in Oceanside Ca.... part of Camp Pendleton. Camp Pendleton is a massive USMC base with many live fire ranges from everything from small arms to aircraft ranges. The Chinese would be signing their death warrant attacking us in So Cal.
This is the biggest what if of what ifs. You forgot Yuma Arizona USMC air base. Ik there’s a couple Air Force bases around that could get a couple jets going. And then the loads of missiles on the destroyers and cruisers, that are fitted up of course. And then you also have a few LA class attack subs, maybe a Seawolf class, which by itself was designed to take out a carrier group unassisted
There is a detachment of F-15s and maybe still some F16s at March in Riverside only about 100 miles from San Diego that are on alert. ANG fighter units for air defense- NORAD. Also Nellis AFB in Vegas (~300 miles) would have flight time for a lot of the aircraft there (everything from F-16's to F-22's are there) and be within radius of some of those aircraft, especially with drop tanks or aerial refueling. Then there's whatever whacky things are out at area 51 only 100 miles or so from Vegas.
MCAS Miramar is currently home to VMFA-314 Black Knights which flies F-35C. The Marine Corps bought F-35C's to help the US Navy with making sure that the Carrier Air Wings have their full compliment of squadrons.

Not all of them. This is homeport. Some are in for repairs, replenishment, refits, etc. The sailors live in the area would still need time to get their bags, get on the ship, get ready for sea, cast the lines, and get out of the narrow port entrance.
@@CombatIneffective if this were true there would be plenty of warning prior to any attack due to intelligence and ships would be able to deploy without a problem. Ships in for yard work could not deploy due to maintenance needs. There are usually two and sometimes three carrier battle groups deployed at any one time in the Pacific and numerous ships and subs off the coast of San Diego preparing for deployment doing local operations. Also, more than half the crew live on the ship.
I have a story about a real life scramble while the US was being attacked. I used to live in the Burlington, VT area. Roughly in the area off the NW end of the Burlington International Airport runway. This airport is where the Green Mountain Boys of the Vermont Air National Guard squadron is based. They were flying F16s at the time (they have since switched out to F35s). The morning of 9/11 one of my roommates and I were glued to the TV as we watched the first World Trade Center building burn. We watched in horror as the second plane hit. It seemed like within a few minutes the F16s were screaming into the air. We were all used to hearing the jets take off, but this was obviously something COMPLETELY different. None of us had EVER heard them come out of the airport that loud and fast. That sound, and the purpose behind it, still gives me shivers. The planes headed directly south 260 miles to fly air cover over Manhattan. It didn't take them long to get there.
But if you listen to the recordings you find out that none of these scrambled jets found a single hijacked plane! …NEAD was very lame ! …They couldn’t get out of their own way…They were too busy passing info “up the chain” to verify reality from drill…it was a “who’s on first” situation…Meanwhile the hijackers were completing their mission…A very sad representation of Air Defense Command!

I have GoPro footage of the F35's in Ket West Station with the Super Hornets flying around and taking off in groups of four.
Well the Super Hornets are grouped in 4 the F35 go up in 2's. In Key West that is. Over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
All they do is play all day every day now.

Cap, the US Marine Corps is receiving both F-35B and F-35C. The B was to replace the AV-8B Harrier, and some F/A-18’s. The F-35C will be replacing the rest of the F/A-18’s for use on super carriers to supplement the Navy squadron in the carrier air wing. B model will only be used by LHD and LHA vessels. Another thing that might need to get modeled is the Evolved Sea Sparrow and the rolling airframe missile. The later is replacing CIWS on surface vessels.

The very first GR video I watched was like this one. I served in the USMC and I was angered. I learned quickly that these are just randomly generated simulations that are amazingly entertaining despite not super realistic. DCS has limitations. I think GR does a wonderful job and their team are hilarious!

The fact that so many Americans like you are so easily angered by a game simulation or war simulation shows how unprepared and untested you guys are in the event of an actual invasion. Nearly every single country in this world has been invaded, and many of the people know that no one's invincible. They know there are weaknesses in their nations and strive to improve it. But it's always the Americans that get overly butthurt when their country "loses" in a simulation because they can't comprehend the idea that there is no such thing as an invincible nation. They stull have the American Exceptionalism idea in side their head that makes them think America somehow is just so special that they'll never lose a war.
I think that if the chinese started moving and splitting on the other side of the pacific, every major target on the west coast would have armed up and be on high alert.

In a war scenario, I'd expect the Aegis/SM equipped ships in-port to be at least partially crewed and able to slave their missile batteries to either destroyer outside the harbor via data link. In theory, that should provide a lot of extra SAM protection. TRs airwing would be shore-based at NAS Lemoore which is 255 nm away.
yhea i dont see how war ships would be completely uncrewed at shore. there would likely be a skeleton crew on board for maintenance and also to be able to scramble defences.

The actual reality is that the US has for decades been able to track not only every single surface warship anywhere in the world, but in the 1980s they could detect when Soviet ships were **preparing** to leave port. Not even moving yet. The Chinese are even easier to detect.
If subs are brought into the mix this attack never happens. I think to make it sporting it's better to be kind to the Chinese and leave them out.

The USMC will be using a combination of F-35B (for LHD/LHA operations) and F-35C (some marine squadrons are part of naval air wings). So you can opt Marines with F-35Cs.

There are several bases that were not mentioned in the scenario, you have Camp Pendleton that also has an air base (mostly helicopters), NAS El Centro that is only about 120 miles away, Yuma Marine Corps Air Station that is about 200 miles away, Also we have submarine base that would probably have subs out patrolling. And there is a training island off the coast of San Diego and I would assume there is some type of air defense there. And there is an auxiliary air base down in San Ysidro area that is part of the City of San Diego. Also we have killer dolphins that the navy trainings here as well.
Handful of air force bases within 300 miles as well. That's not a lot of flight time for a fighter.

If they're going after San Diego their going to be dealing with like 8 different enormous bases, Coronado, Miramar, Pendelton, Ventura, Edwards, March, Vandenberg and 29 Palms. There is one major factor not being included in on this; NAS North Island. That's where that cold dark carrier's aircraft would be based at. Even taking into account the base is primarily used for ASW planes and choppers, there are always some F/A-18s out there. So they'd be amongst the first to be scrambled and you'd likely have an additional dozen planes ready to go along with anything else that could be thrown together for Anti-Ship duty. And it definitely has additional SAMs and whatnot.
Love ALL of your videos!! These "what if" ones are definitely fun to watch and I am sure they are a big challenge to put together. I didn't read all of the comments so some of what I am about to say could already have been said - sorry in advance. The setup for this video sort of treats San Diego as if it is a lot more isolated as a military facility than it really is. I am not sure if they are too far away to be much help in this scenario, but you have both Edwards AFB (North of LA) and Vandenberg AFB (NW of LA on the coast). Also, there is a HUGE Navy T&E facility with Surface AND Air Search radars located up and down the coast of SoCal and also on at least some of the islands off the coast. The Sea Test Range itself is 36,000 square miles in size (that is the area in which the official testing typically takes place). You can get an idea what this looks like by googling NAWCWD Point Mugu Sea Range. Point Mugu is/was also a Naval Air Station. I am not sure what is still stationed there as in the early 2000's I believe much of the tenants of the base we relocated to China Lake (further North of LA) as part of the BRAC actions taken by the US Government and the DoD.
There are several more bases in range for the parameters of this scenario that are even closer than the LA bases: March Air Force Base and NAF El Centro.
The last time I passed Miramar and my tractor trailer, British were training in the new 35s. A whole bunch of fifteens, and 18s were doing touch and goes.
When the last missile broke through the clouds to face four SM-2 trails incoming... priceless.
Wouldn't an attack sub/destroyer group assigned to shadow the group sink that carrier as soon as it was designated as a hostile? I get that this scenario was limited to air assets, but I would have to think that some of the air units would be tied up trying to defend the carrier from this.
Maybe this has been addressed before... Can the F35 "Murder Configuration" not transform to a "Stealth" configuration after launching the external mounted missiles? Surely the boffins could find a way to detach/dump the missile mounts after use?
I'd imagine that the brackets that connect pylons to the wings would still be pretty non-stealthy, but it's doubtful that those would have a combined >1m RCS.
Would likely result in the belly aspect being non-stealth, but anything coming in from above the nose (like a missile, terminally guiding) probably wouldn't notice any difference.
Still, it's a pretty niche capability that probably doesn't warrant the cost, development hours or mechanical complexity IRL
I have wondered this too- the idea to me is that the racks would not be too stealthy, but probably not make that much of an impact. My only concern would be the mounts that attach the racks to the wing might not be outfitted with the correct stealth coating and maybe will have enough edges to emit a presence to an AWACS or a ship/land-based radar.

one of the best simulations you have ever done. Unrealistic scenario? yes, up until the point of firing, then is was amazing.
I have a suggestion for an alternate history scenario that would be really interesting to see how it would play out.
Back story:
At 19:57, 27 October 1981 the soviet submarine S-363 (Swedish designation U137, which i will use during this text) ran aground at Torumskär in Gåsefjärden, close to the naval base in Karlskrona. They are trying to pull themselves off, but are unable to do so and reports this back to base at 21:00. At around 22:00 they are spotted by a Swedish fisherman, who reports his findings to the naval base in Karlskrona the morning after at 09:54. At 11:30 this is reported to the Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces.
This of course leads to mobilization of Swedish forces. The coastal artillery are deployed to the area, manning both fixed and mobile artillery systems. They also deploy coastal rangers with access to different kinds of anti tank weapons that can be used, such as m/48 Carl Gustaf recoilless rifles.
At around 19:00, reports state that a Soviet naval force are on it's way to rescue the submarine. The Prime minister Thorbjörn Fälldin gives the order: Hold the border! When the vessels are roughly 700 meters from the border, the Swedish artillery switches it's radars from peacetime mode to the frequency hopping war mode. Within 30 seconds the soviet vessels reduces their speed, and at 21:00 they stop at the border. At 02:30, the soviets decide to cancel the rescue mission, which was planned for 03:00.
The scenario:
What would had happened if the Soviet forces had not decided to cancel their mission, but instead pushed trough?

You're leaving out in your scenario that the Soviet Air Force was heavily based around the Baltic. Latvia, Estonia and St. Petersburg were at the time home to enough MiG-23s to dwarf the Swedish Air Force, a regiment of MiG-25s at Monchegorsk, and two regiments flying Su-24s for all-weather attack.

99.99% of the time aircraft flying out of Miramar depart west bound due to prevailing winds. I watch them every day. Also the US forces would have a much larger detection radius.

Can you guys do a alternate Falklands War scenario where the Royal Navy task force is built around 2x modernised Malta class Aircraft Carriers (the unbuilt equivalent of the Midways) with Buccaneers and Phantoms? Maybe do an operation in place of the Black Buck Raid or one involving searching out and killing the Northern Argentine task force based around the Colossus Class Carrier "Veinticinco De Mayo" and her 2x Type 42 escorts? I'd be really curious to see the latter scenario.

One additional thing! By 1982 with 4x (or more 3x by that time) Malta's in service the RN would have likely replaced the Fairey Gannet AEW with either the proposed P139 AEW Aircraft concept or E2 Hawkeye's. I think the latter. Just something to bare in mind

@@vader1a Nope the Maltas were WW2 designs that were cancelled by Atlees government in 1945. They were open hanger carriers and about 10,000 heavier then preceding Audacious class Armoured Hanger Carriers of which HMS ArkRoyal R09 and HMS Eagle R05 were members of. Its been calculated that the Maltas would have needed less modernisation work to make them viable modern fleet carriers in the 60s & 70s, which could have seen them being retained in service until the late 80s or early 90s.

I've been playing DCS for a month now only got F16 and Nevada map (plus free ones like A4 and Marianas) really enjoying it , I'm ex-Navy aircraft technician (British Junglie) so training is not as bad for me , using things like HSI and understanding terms is fine (well done to anyone who had no experience) . The only thing I have struggled with in Air-to-Air is the JF-17 . I swear the F-16 has real problems detecting and tracking it , the Flankers are even easier than I thought to take down . I managed to land the F16 on my second ever try . Been doing loads of cold start takeoff/landings and CAP missions against a variety of enemies (AI of course) being outnumbered no more than 3-1 .
Once I manage to get a grip with Air-to-Ground and purchase Flaming Cliffs 3 I will go multiplayer , not feeling confident about going multiplayer right now as I'd be more of a hinderance to people .

Don’t forget that the biggest base in the US (Pendleton) is about 40 miles north of San Diego city and March AFB is about 80 miles north east. And North Island has air assets you can see them from Point Loma
Given that any Chinese carrier group would be shadowed by a US sub since leaving its home port, the Fujian would probably be immediately sunk just after launching is A2A wave and it heads out toward SD. The anti-shipping wave would never even get into the air.

if the chinese were smart they would put dozens of antiship missiles onto civilian cargo ships and fire them off at less than 50 miles range, containerised missiles are a thing these days.

Just a little note the carriers air wing are generally at an airbase close to the carriers base where they go when the carrier is in port so they would likely be close enough for some of their plans to assist within this scenario. Can’t speak for west coast but east coast in Norfolk the air wings switches to NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach. So I would guess on west coast they air wing would be in the marine base.

I would love to see a follow up video with the whole US Fleet in San Diego; Carriers, LHAs, Destroyers, Cruisers, LCS everything hunting down the Chinese Carrier and the Type 003 meets up with some more destroyers and frigates but it only has its remaining aircraft.
Don't forget B-52s spamming cruise missiles.

I'm wondering how effective a swarm of drones would be against the ship's defense. 2-300 drones each carrying a 10lb shaped charge or a claymore type charge for crew in the open on carriers could crater the deck and stop air operations as well as take out the deck crews. Maybe Arma 3 can put this to the test.
I was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. There is one squadron on standby, maybe 2 planes, ready to go at any time. We have 4 squadrons. Black Nights, Vikings, Red Devils, and Vf-101 the training squadron. Vf-101 was the only f/a18 c/d. Everyone else had super hornets until the transition to f35. March Air Force base covers the west coast with ballistic missiles. Naval air station North Island also has around 2 to 3 SSN in Point Loma. One carrier is usually in port. Miramar also has three squadrons of v-22s. Three squadrons of ch53s two squadrons of c-130s. Sometimes, f-16s and f-15. Would spend a month on station cross traing. The only way we would be ready and waiting would be an early waring. Takes about an hour for the crews just to get to the missile bunkers. Also, there are rats in the bunkers that would routinely set off the alarms. Ask any questions. This is also public knowledge, so im not disclosing any secret information. But the rats might be top secret.
I'd like to believe that if china sent every piece of hardware toward the west coast, they would not even make it half way across the pacific and every bit of it all would reside forever more at the bottom of the sea.

17:42: IIRC, Vandenberg does not have any LIVE ICBMs; its solely a rocket base. They have ICBMs with inert payload simulators, but no nukes. All they do are launch satelites and test fire inert ICBMs into the Kwajalein Atoll off the Marshall Islands; they don't have any weaponry other than small arms.

48:44: CVNs don't have thier airwings in port. The CAG is not part of the ship; its its own organizational entity. A CAG relocates to a NAS when the ship is in port.
@18:00 it's an interesting question, I'm going to have to do some math on what the maximum altitude a round could reach.
I would imagine if you had enough guys firing off rounds and saturating the air, if any made it to the right altitude it would be as bad as a small bird strike on the intakes at the very least.
Of course with all of those bullets raining back down I'd wonder if they would do more damage to people and property on the ground.
I know this is an old video or if this has changed at all since I was USMC from 04 to 08, but Marines phased out Stingers and Avenger platforms during that time, so they wouldn't have them in this scenario. They were in fact retooling the Stinger Batteries to being standardized grunt units. I was deployed to Africa as an augment with 3rd LAAD back in late 2007 and the word at that time was that the USMC intended to completely retire the Stinger system and existing Stinger units be folded into other responsibilities, such as what we were doing in Africa which was being base security personnel. Don't know what we'd be using now, but that's just what I remember anyways.
Just in the San Diego port on cruz boat... went next to see the USS Enterprise, Aircraft carrier built in 1970... Never saw service. Great tour of boat.

I grew up in Bath Maine where both of the Zumwalt class destroyers were built, and its so strange hearing about them elsewhere because while growing up and watching them get built, I thought they were just normal ships, and had no idea of their significance. They’re awesome ships!

A couple of things I think should have been considered in this scenario.
You did not take into consideration NASNI in Coronado. This is where the carriers are docked and their would anywhere from 1 to 3 there. Sometimes, if they are coming in and leaving again, the fighter wing would be left on the ship.
NASNI is the Pacific Fleet HQ and always has quite a few planes. Probably not all ready for combat as the base is a repair facility.
32nd Street Naval Base always has a lot of ships (I think you took that into account though). this is NOT where the carriers dock as they can't get in there.
If the Chinese sent so many ships into the Pacific, by the time they got close to San Diego, we would have the entire Pacific Fleet either trailing them or on standby in positions where they could not approach get in range of San Diego or Los Angeles. In addition, air wings along the cost as well as inland would be notified and wings scrambled to the bases in San Diego and LA.
In addition, the air radar on the coast is not something to be forgotten, though I doubt anyone really knows its capabilities. Our satellite systems can't be forgotten about either. It would be interesting to see how the Chinese would fair in a scenario where the US detected their fleet deployment and moved forces in preparation for some attack along the coast. I imagine that would take some thought and counting of available US assets that could be deployed.
I think the residents of Coronado would lose their shit over the emissions from the missiles if the Arleigh Burkes let loose while in port. The base switchboard would be lit up like a Christmas tree.
What about Air Force/ANG assets? They could get there!
Let’s not forget there are numerous military bases in California. You have Edwards AFB, March AFB, and others.
If you want it to be realistic : add escort ships for chinese carrier with cruise missiles and anti ship missiles + the strike would be coordinated (no j 15 going solo into the fight) and they would make an AWACS take off from the carrier as soon as possible plus you need to take into account the time necessary to put weapons and fuel and the US planes. (And there would most likely be 2 US carrier as generally 1/3 of the carriers that deployed.
Also the j15 anti ship planes would be carrying pl 12 or 15 for long range self defense. Nato does the same, even in ground attack f18 generally have 2 aim120 and 2 aim9

I lived in San Diego for 5 years. It wasn't often that 2 carriers were in town at the same time. At least not for long. I know that the port can handle it. My father in law served with the Navy and said he remembers a time when 4 carriers were in port at the same time back years ago, but the usual here is 1.

if i am not mistaken. that LCS is a Army vessel who hangs out and helps tracks vessels off nato borders. usually in Australian waters. & is rumored to have better tech advances than a fair portion of other military watercraft. i could be wrong though.

I know this is just a navy v. navy op however since it wasn’t mentioned up front I feel it’s important to add the fact that in real life there are USAF bases that would be “cranky” if the Chinese got even remotely close and would send the air defense standby aircraft immediately then followed by a ton of aircraft shortly there after. And there is also this tiny insignificant thing called NORAD. (North American defense) which is constantly watching everything even remotely close to all of North America and the Canadian Air Force will want to come play too. Lol! That'd be news to a lot of people.
Anyway,, MCAS Miramar and North Island are only the two closest airfields. Well within aircraft range but a bit further from action are bases in Irvine (alsthough likely only helicopters nowadays), and a few bases in Los Angeles, and Imperial Valley. I suppose depending on how much a surprise attack a Chiense aircraft carrier might be, you could argue no aircraft would be loaded with weapons that can be used.
Also, beside California Air National Guard, there is a multitude of light aircraft and vessels of the Coast Guard manybe not loaded with weapons but extremely capable surveillance. Additionally, commercial airdraft regularly fly in all directions up and down and around the coast at least out to 30 or 50 miles or so... It's very busy and I'm sure something like a Chinese aircraft carrier would be visible if not detectable at least 100 miles from the ooastline.
In your scenario, you also suggest the Abraham Lincoln is currently ported in San Diego. Are you suggesting none of its aircraft is also local? Are you suggesting the entire air wing is deployed on another vessel and not spending time in San Diego for training purposes?
From a Chinese logistics point of view, that would be some kind of achievement to disappear one of their 3 aircraft carriers long enough to sail across the Pacific to San Diego. It would have to involve at least one if not multiple refuelings and arrive at San Diego with practically empty fuel, ready to engage.. In a realistic situation, I'd expect that the US would be raising alarm bells once one of China's aircraft carriers had disappeared and be combing the entire Pacific looking for the ship using satellites, radar, visual sightings by commercial cargo and commercial aircraft, everything.
So just raising questions about the realistic possibility of a surprise attack on San Diego... Slim and none beyond what you've accounted for in your proposed scenario.

This video brought to light something I have been thinking about a lot over the decades since VLS launchers. What stops a foreign aggressor from converting civilian cargo ships into launch platforms? Many missiles hidden in an inconspicuous trade ship. 20+ years ago the USA ramped up radiation detection in cargo ships entering US ports knowing bad stuff could slip through. But what about Mach 2+ missiles from a special cargo ship just entering US waters? Missiles fired at max distance. No need to get into port. I would love to see this simulation in the video run again with YJ-12 spawning from a location that coincides with both main shipping routes to major California ports and proximity to San Diego. The ultimate would be 2 or more converted attack cargo ships from multiple vectors as they approach the US west coast on differing routes. I'm hoping if such a simulation were run it would show that if you have a massive air defense ship in port, do whatever you can to keep the anti-air systems on. Your video of Russian attack on London definitely demonstrated this need if I remember correctly? The Royal Navy Destroyers were key players...

San Diego resident. MCAS flies F35s now. A month ago F15 from Oregon National Guard were cross training. Very often there are other "Red" squadrons flying here. F5, Israel's, other country jets. Etc. Don't forget Pendleton, 30 miles north. Mostly rotary wing, but can include attack helicopters. There are also quite often Asault carriers or destroyers off the coast of Camp Pendleton. There are also other air wings from other areas that practice near Catalina island.
MCAS Yuma is well within distance of SD (150 miles give or take), it has 5 F35 squadrons and 1 MQ9 Reaper Squadron. As is NAS Lemoore (250 ish miles) which has 15 Super Hornet Squadrons and 3 F35 squadrons, fuel probably wouldn’t be a problem as they can jump to MCAS Camp Pendleton or Miramar
Southern California has a concentrated Military presence from Camp Pendleton to MCRD San Diego (USMC bootcamp) and Navy bootcamp... plus the Marine Recon and Navy Seal training happens basically in Oceanside Ca.... part of Camp Pendleton. Camp Pendleton is a massive USMC base with many live fire ranges from everything from small arms to aircraft ranges. The Chinese would be signing their death warrant attacking us in So Cal.

This is the biggest what if of what ifs. You forgot Yuma Arizona USMC air base. Ik there’s a couple Air Force bases around that could get a couple jets going. And then the loads of missiles on the destroyers and cruisers, that are fitted up of course. And then you also have a few LA class attack subs, maybe a Seawolf class, which by itself was designed to take out a carrier group unassisted

There is a detachment of F-15s and maybe still some F16s at March in Riverside only about 100 miles from San Diego that are on alert. ANG fighter units for air defense- NORAD.
Also Nellis AFB in Vegas (~300 miles) would have flight time for a lot of the aircraft there (everything from F-16's to F-22's are there) and be within radius of some of those aircraft, especially with drop tanks or aerial refueling.
Then there's whatever whacky things are out at area 51 only 100 miles or so from Vegas.
The F-35 does have a four-barrel 25mm gatling gun that is located in the left-wing root.
MCAS Miramar is currently home to VMFA-314 Black Knights which flies F-35C. The Marine Corps bought F-35C's to help the US Navy with making sure that the Carrier Air Wings have their full compliment of squadrons.
What about North Island Naval Air station on Coronado? You know where the new Top Gun was filmed. They have quite a few planes as well.
