蝴蝶蘭花型有如蝴蝶，開花時，花莖下垂微彎，微風吹動有若群蝶飛舞。在蘭花界有「蘭花之后」之稱。
♦ 學名：Phalaenopsis，是由 Phalaena（蛾）與opsis（外觀）組合而成。
♦ 名稱由來：以其花型有如蝴蝶而命名。
♦ 原產地：分佈以東南亞高溫多溼的熱帶森林中為主，原生種類約有50多種。
♦ 花期：通常是為春季，但經由現代栽培技術與穩定的溫室環境，幾乎全年都能欣賞到盛開的蝴蝶蘭。
♦ 發展：台灣蝴蝶蘭也在育種家與栽培者的協力合作下，已成為世界蝴蝶蘭種原最豐富的國家，每年行銷世界，產值超過三十多億台幣。台灣原生種白花蝴蝶蘭（amabilis，俗稱“台灣阿嬤”），曾連續兩年奪得國際蘭展的冠軍獎盃，使得Phal. amabilis聞名國際。台灣已然成為「質」、「量」兼具全球最知名的「蝴蝶蘭王國」。
