Alright everyone. I've now completed followed the tutorial and want to make a comment of a bunch of things I wish I knew before I started. Also to answer a lot of the questions I see asked on here a lot. FAQ + some personal tips as someone who has completed the project. If you have any questions, I'm on TH-cam a lot, and I hope I can come back to this thread to help out anyone trying this on their own. First off, thank AzureBlaze for an amazingly detailed tutorial. Please stop asking her to just sell it. She has already explained that she has no interest in selling it due to the time it takes to create. She went through the effort of a big and very detailed tutorial that shows you EXACTLY how to make it all by yourself. It costs about $40-$50 (USD) to buy the materials alone. Including the amount of effort and time and skill it takes to do it right, I wouldn't do it again for any less than $350-$400. It's honestly quite the learning experience too when you make it on your own, I learned a lot about patience and continuing to move on despite making what seemed like catastrophic errors, which were ultimately non-consequential. I encourage you to go on your own journey and complete this for yourself, if you have any interest in it. 90% of the materials I was able to purchase at Michaels, which is an arts and crafts store in New England. The last few bits like nails and a binder clip and hairbands I found at Wal-Mart. When you purchase the floss, you need 32 total strands of it. 8 of each color, you'll need the full length wrapped around each wooden pin. It really does only take about 3.5m like she says in the tutorial, but you want that extra for any mistakes, trust me. 38 small nails, 32 wooden pins (or doll pins), a ruler, a binder clip, rubber bands / hair bands. That was my shopping list. Do NOT separate the embroidery floss. Wrap the entire string around the wodden pins, if it separates it becomes too thin to work with and falls apart easily. The little clip used to secure it after she wraps it around her wrist is called a suspender clip, when I bought one, it's a little small for the big bracelet, so it kinda just clamps them together, I may buy a bigger one so the "teeth" of the clip dont "bite" into the braided cord. It takes a very long time. It took me about 10 hours just to wrap all the threads around the clips, and get it all lined up clipped and organized. 30 - 40 hours to actually do all the threads, and that's with really getting into a groove and going pretty quickly. I didn't create the jig, so what I did was use the big binder clip on top secured to the back of my monitor stand with some hairbands. You want this to be study and not bouncy or have any give, if you can help it. I just nailed all the nails straight into my desk, because I don't care for it. On that note, make sure you have the room for this thing. Because it is a long project, it is going to sit there for a very long time. It also takes up more space than you'd expect. If it's even remotely in the way, like mine was, it will start to be very annoying and you may even start rushing it just to get it out of the way. If you have a cat, cover the whole thing with an old t shirt or towel you don't care about anymore. My cat loved the little dangly bits, and the only way I could get her to ignore it was out of sight out of mind. Never ever EVER neglect the knocking. It's VERY IMPORTANT YOU DO THIS EVERY LINE (including that beginning segment! You can see in the video she even says it is malformed because she neglected knocking). If you don't it will look loose or start the slanting problem that some people seem to be complaining about. at some point you will notice it being very tight, this is COMPLETELY NORMAL if you've been knocking the whole time. You're tying a very tight knot, and then tightening it even more each time you knock. It may look a little warped, or like it's curving in the middle. This is VERY NORMAL if you've been KNOCKING EACH LINE. Just keep on going on. When it's done, you can put some heavy books on it overnight, or dip it in water and stretch it by putting heavy books on each end and making sure its tight and taught. Imagine working a very large dollar bill to put into a vending machine. Just have to straighten it out. Be careful though! The embroidery floss is sensitive and light material. When you get to the confusing middle part, make sure to TAKE YOUR TIME. As it's easily the most convoluted part of the design, it can be VERY EASY to mess up at this point. I was talking to a friend when I did it very late and night, and while I didn't butcher it, I definitely put in an extra red or two that should've been white. I recommend having your full attention when doing this part, pause your podcast or wait until you have some alone time and can really focus on it. The excel spreadsheet is exactly how you need to follow it. 1 cell = 1 knot. For the Red / orange bit at the beginning and end, do 16cm of each. If you want my recommendation, after you get all the floss bundled up the way she does in the starting bit, That is when you should START counting towards your 16cm of red. You'll see the bundling gives you about 1-2cm of length, but honestly, it just looks a little short in the end product if you count that. start the bundle, do 16cm, THEN do the slanted design. Same for orange, AFTER THE SLANT, start counting towards another 16cm of orange. Then do the middle design part, then do it all again. Basically what I'm saying is, don't count the starting or ending bit, and don't count the slants for "length". I did it so I could cheat a little and get it done just a little quicker, and I paid the price. Again it looks totally fine, but I do wish I did it the way I just described. The proportions would've just felt a bit more perfect. IF YOUR FLOSS BEGINS TO SEPERATE SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PROJECT DO NOT WORRY! There's a very easy fix I found in a forum. you'll notice working with split floss is very frustrating and messy and can start the alter how the braided cord looks. To avoid this, I recommend finding the floss that is splitting, cutting it off as close as you can to the braid without damaging anything else, and then cutting off any split part ( pull out some string from the pin until it's whole again). Then, take the new whole string, and feed it BEHIND the braid and up into the clip again, and place it back between the nails where it belonged. Then continue to braid as normal. Because this is so tight, after about 5-10 more rows you shouldn't feel it having any slack or like you can "pull it out" of the design. Then once you are complete, and you cut off any extra string dangling from the back via a nail clipper or other super precise cutting. This is everything I can think of mentioning right now. Again if you have any questions I will try my best to answer them no matter how old this comment is. Looking at you person needing answers in 4 years.
this is very helpful! im about 14cm from finishing my first cord (making another and giving it to my friend who also loves the anime) and i definitely forgot the knocking and made a couple mistakes for the first try. thanks for the tips for next time!
@@tinytem1306 Good luck on your second one! You have more patience then me if you're doing it again XD. Maybe someday I'd do it again but not any time soon. I hope your friend loves it!
thanks so much for this! but how did she start off the braiding(?) process? the first part of the excel sheet doesn't seem to be working for me so i can't see how many rows she did for the red
@@liayaaa do you mean the very beginning bundle part? She goes over it, but basically you have to look at the little green lines in the excel sheet. She starts with wrapping red fully around the entire bundle twice. Then, bundle of 1, bundle of 7. After that, bundle of 7, bundle of 1. 1-6-1 X2 1-1-5-1 And so forth Each time you make a bundle move all reds to the next left peg. If you mean how many reds after that segment, you'll just have to keep going until you can measure out 16cm of red with your ruler.

This is such a great tutorial! I'm a huge fan of Kimi no na wa and so I thought of making the hairband myself, as I like to craft things as a hobby. After looking at some other videos that didn't satisfy me I found this one. My first thought was: "This is way too complicated for me. I better search for something easier". But your kumihimo is by far the most detailed one and has the best tutorial for it. I watched this video over and over again and each time it got easier in my head to do it. At some point I was like "It sure isn't easy, but I think I can do it". So I started collecting all the things I needed, which is a huge task itself, as I live in a small town. With the help of my father I made the wooden frame and I even got the exact wooden pins that you used! With your detailed instructions and the pattern you made it was very clear what to do. From collecting the parts to the finished product I think it took me at least a month, maybe two or three (I don't really remember). I'm really satisfied with my kumihimo, although in the middle part it is a little wider than the rest, and overall it's not quite straight (but if you wear it as a bracelet it doesn't show). I often wear it as a bracelet and it's such a great feeling to know that I made it myself and that I invested a lot of time and work in it. Thank you so much for this tutorial!
@@soninho8248 Hi, i found them at a local store that had a small crafting-supplies-part. I live in Germany, so I can only speak for that. But I'm pretty sure you can find them online, I just searched for "wooden clothes pegs" and they are showing up :)
When I was making this as a surprise gift for my brother (who introduced me to the movie and is now both our favourite movies) I was using my art easel and hair pins and sticky tape as a makeshift frame but every time my brother (his room is right next to mine) would come into my room I’d have to shove my easel into my crowded closet and then when I’d take it out I’d have to restick all the pins that fell off bc the sticky tape wasn’t that sticky😂😂 this was A LOT of work but I’m glad I got to make it for him *THANKS FOR THE TUTORIAL*
7 years later and it's still the only good tutorial of this. Made a few for friends 5-6 years ago but didn't get around to making mine. Maybe it's time to do it again!
I started a year ago, gave up a day after starting... now i started again and it's making progress. I think i can give it to my brother when he gets his first child (he's 21 now and single...) you can imagine how long it will take... but by the way, thank you very much for the tutorial!! It looks so great and my brother will love it
For anyone asking: I think the clasp that they're using to secure the bracelet comes from a harness (the kind that you use to hold your pants up)! You can probably go get in a textile shop or a shop of that calibre, or just buy a cheap harness and cut it off!
Thank you so much this tutorial! I have never tried braiding anything this complicated but your tutorial gave me the confidence to try. It took a couple of years on and off but it was so worth it! What should have been a Christmas 2019 present for my boyfriend is now something for him to wear on our wedding day. Thank you again!
I just finished it and my girlfriend really enjoyed it! Thanks for the amazing tutorial, it's all in it, and it's really simple to understand and to do it but it takes a lot of effort.
Thanks for this, my girlfriend and I just watched this movie together. We're in a long distance relationship and the story really resonated with us so now I'm going to try and make this to give to her.
Same here, my partner lives on the other side of the country. I thought it would be great to exchange it every time we could meet, so we have it half the time and when we don't, the other is wearing it. So it'll be even more close to the movie and will really be something that belongs to the both of us and link us despite the distance. I'm eager to offer it and explain this to them ! ^^
Omg im really tempted to waste my time on making one myself since i just lost one of my braclets. God dang why do you have to post such nice tutorials.
Some of us are not waiting for others to do it. If you make it yourself, you'll like it even more because you'll know how hard it was to make and you will be proud of you every time you'll wear it ^^*
@@zebraxell2065 yeah I know, I just saw some random comment that the guy was gonna give this on a girl. So I just thought she's very lucky, but that's what I was planning on to do... I'm gonna do it on my own❤❤😊
Hi there! I really like your technique, it gives exactly the effect I was looking for. I have a question though: in the pattern you linked, the "total red" and "total orange" parts seem a bit too short compared to the central part, did you add extra rows to your braid that are not shown in the pattern?
so I am making myself one of these bands, but the back of it is absolutely atrocious. not sure if its the tying method? Any tips to fix this or to help from it further down the line?
@@Children-1 Maybe he's just not English and never saw that so he couldn't translate the name (like me, I was looking for someone who already asked this)
Excuse me i have a question about the distribution of the embroidery floss per wooden pin, you used 1 meter on every wooden pin for one colour? For example you had 8 meters of red floss and you distribuited in 8 wooden pins?
Hi, thanks for the tutorial! I have a question, how do you do the starting knot? It seems like all the threads are lining up accordingly (white-blue-orange-red-white-etc.) does it have to be this way? or can I just grab all the threads together and tie a knot? Thanks for your reply
Hi! First of all great job on the video and making this kumihimo. I'm making one right now and currently at 14 cm and I just have a few questions.. 1. It's sorta more stiff than I imagined (the 14 cm can be straightened and it won't fall). I mean it won't be when it's longer but is this normal? or am I tightening it too much? and if ever. any tips to make it more soft? 2. It's sorta bending towards the right side and not really straight. I mean it's not noticeable but I'm just afraid that I'm doing something wrong. 3. Is the wooden pins suppose to be a bit heavy to pull the cords downward? I couldn't find any and used cardboard as a replacement. Again. Just wondering if this will affect the kumihimo in the long run. Will be waiting for your reply. Please and thank you :)
1.Once you finished it you can soften it up a bit by soaking it in water to release the tension. It also take some time to "wear" it down to become softer. 2.It is normal. Wrap it around a pole, apply tension and soak it should correct the shape more or less. 3.Using something that has more weight might be better, but right tools are hard to come by so I just use light stuffs I can find.
It's a suspender clip. You should be able to find it in some sewing/craft supplies shop. I used regular cotton embroidery floss on this and it's good enough for me.
I have a question that: After braiding the starting part ( that is to say before braiding the pattern), how many rows of red ( or orange) did you braid?
Hey, I am making this bracelet and i have a Problem. The row i knot are diagonal. So that the right end of the row is much lower than the beginning. I tried fixing it with neglecting the hammering for half of the row but still its diagonal. Please give my a hint how i can change it that would be really nice.
I hate to be that guy but this isn't kumihimo. Kumihimo is a type of braiding and braiding by definition doesn't knot the threads. I believe this is called macrame but I might be wrong about that. The result is really pretty though!
Hi! I hope I'm not being rude or anything but I think this closely resembles the Takadai form of Kumihimo... You're right about traditional kumihimo not knotting the treads but do you think it could be a modern form of it? Just asking out of curiosity!
When you started the braid, how did you prevent your rows from curving upwards? And how did you get each individual knot so tight? I'm pulling mine as far as they'll go but there's still a little "give" and my bracelet is looking like it'll end up wider than yours.
I'm really quite confused with the tutorial but I want to make the bracelet so bad. Please help. Also I would just like to ask on why is it that on the first part, on 2:00 to 6:00 it seems like you are already halfway with the braiding and then on the middle of the video (7:21) there's the starting part wherein you only got started? It kinda confuses me though. what am I gonna follow first?
It is easier to explain the ideal by using the middle section. The start, end, and pattern part is only a variant of it. See imgur.com/e4kIims for a better idea of what the whole thing looks like.
Has anyone braided the cord and ended with the patern braiding diaganally instead of horizontally like azureblaze was able to in the video? Im having trouble keeping my braid perpendicular to the braclet.
so it say's that i need 2 rows for a single pixel but the pattern already accommodates it. so is it just 2 layers across the entire band or is it four for the double row in the beginning?
Thanks for the tutorial, took me a total of 3 months to finish the project. Though for everyone watching you have to extend the pattern from the sheets in the beginning and ending red/orange sections by at least 4 time if you want a decent length. I extended my pattern to 344 rows, and it resulted in about a 40 CM cord. (The pattern provided and the cord in the video are not the same in length at all.) Most of the time and effort will go into the beginning and ending as after extension they are super long and take a while to braid. Here is my updated pattern sheet for anyone to use (docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/122j1ar2WX6AHbfd3SmWcGCMX2G981Uv3Nwy8-GPW5Bc/edit?usp=sharing) Column J is just a tile I colored in green to keep track of which rows I've completed, simply reset them all back to white to track your own progress. Column K, are just marked rows that show those are extension rows I added to the original pattern. Good luck, it's really a tough project but extremely rewarding.
hi sorry for the extreme late comment, but thanks that just a great video, currently buying all the materials to start making the kumihino, but i want to make it with extreme quality so i am planning to go with 16 columns, but your spreadsheet design has only 8 could you help me with how the spreadsheet will look if it were 16 segments , please i need to actually make tis for a special someone who also loves the film, thanks.
Quarantine project! I'm in love with this as a hobby though I think I'll make it a lanyard type as I'm not sure what else my future husband would use it for. Maybe make a second one for a obon festival yukata hmmmm
Do you think it would look good with 24 strands? My wrist is really thin... Also, is it possible to do it with those kumihimo discs? I'd like to do mine with less details, just full red, orange, blue and white parts. Thanks a lot for the videos!
It would be hard to make the pattern look good with less then 8 bundles (in fact I think 16 will be the best but that's too much work). You could try using thinner threads. These embroidery floss usually have 6 strands, you could split them into 3 strands. I haven't figure out a way to do it with kumihimo discs yet.
AzureBlaze I see. By pattern you mean the middle part right? The blue with white and red details. Well, I'll be starting tomorrow, super excited to try this out. Thanks a lot for replying!
It took a long time, but I removed two threads from each bundle to make the entire bracelet thinner. You unravel the entire bundle, carefully pull one thread out of the entire thing, straighten it, then pull another thread out. I tried pulling out two threads at the same time, but it tangled so bad I couldn't do it. Here's a video that shows you how: th-cam.com/video/6XfauuaNJ2I/w-d-xo.html

Can I use it as a hair tie... I think it has some traditional meaning in it and I don't want to hurt it so can anyone let me know it is not disrespectful..
How long is each strand supposed to be? Is each strand 8m long, so that we end up with thirty-two 8m strands (258m in total if we were to add it up altogether)...? Thanks!
does the 16cm length for the red end at the last row of the orange transition (where the first bundle is red then the rest is orange)? also for the orange, does the 16cm length stop at the row of just orange before the white comes into the braiding?
Lauren Houdson do you mean "slanted?" If so, just refer to the pattern sheet and the part of the video 3:07 on changing colors. To further explain, it goes from the 8th bundle where you tie with orange colors on two rows, then continuing on to the 7th, tying them on 2 rows along with the 8th, going to the 6th, so on and so forth.

Thank you! One last thing, can you inform me the weight of an individual pin?
How long is it?
This is like friendship bracelet making, but more advanced.
When I was making this as a surprise gift for my brother (who introduced me to the movie and is now both our favourite movies) I was using my art easel and hair pins and sticky tape as a makeshift frame but every time my brother (his room is right next to mine) would come into my room I’d have to shove my easel into my crowded closet and then when I’d take it out I’d have to restick all the pins that fell off bc the sticky tape wasn’t that sticky😂😂 this was A LOT of work but I’m glad I got to make it for him
*THANKS FOR THE TUTORIAL*
thats nice!!!! what did u use in making the pattern (wooden frame)
How did you do the wooden thing.. I want to make some of it for my friends and family😅
how long did it take you
7 years later and it's still the only good tutorial of this. Made a few for friends 5-6 years ago but didn't get around to making mine. Maybe it's time to do it again!
are you going to make this ?
I started a year ago, gave up a day after starting... now i started again and it's making progress. I think i can give it to my brother when he gets his first child (he's 21 now and single...) you can imagine how long it will take... but by the way, thank you very much for the tutorial!! It looks so great and my brother will love it
For anyone asking: I think the clasp that they're using to secure the bracelet comes from a harness (the kind that you use to hold your pants up)! You can probably go get in a textile shop or a shop of that calibre, or just buy a cheap harness and cut it off!
The clip's technical name is "fold over clasp", it took me a long while to find the actual name.
so, suspender clips?
Thank you so much this tutorial! I have never tried braiding anything this complicated but your tutorial gave me the confidence to try. It took a couple of years on and off but it was so worth it! What should have been a Christmas 2019 present for my boyfriend is now something for him to wear on our wedding day. Thank you again!
I want this on my birthday...but there's no one who gonna give me this .. so i think i will make it myself and gift it myself 💪

Same for me, just opposite! Did you finish it? How did it turn out? Im planning to start mine in a few days when I buy the tread.

Excuse me i have a question about the distribution of the embroidery floss per wooden pin, you used 1 meter on every wooden pin for one colour? For example you had 8 meters of red floss and you distribuited in 8 wooden pins?
Hi, thanks for the tutorial!
I have a question, how do you do the starting knot? It seems like all the threads are lining up accordingly (white-blue-orange-red-white-etc.) does it have to be this way? or can I just grab all the threads together and tie a knot?
Thanks for your reply
Angkun Noomlamool line the threads up first and make a simple knot.
1. Line up
2. Grab them [lined up]
3. Make a simple knot
[7month late reply]
Did you use 8 bundles of 8m or just 1 and cut it into 1m parts? I was also wondering how many lines you used for the red and orange part. Thanks!
i praise your patience
hey! Did anyone know where I can buy the button like the one in 0:06

Can you please tell me where I could get that metal clasp and where to find good quality Japanese authentic string?
It's a suspender clip. You should be able to find it in some sewing/craft supplies shop. I used regular cotton embroidery floss on this and it's good enough for me.
You are most likely looking for silk
I have one but the clasp cannot close it. Idk where to find a bigger clasp

Hey is anyone having the problem of a strand of the string snapping or the entire string snapping
this is a cool way of making an alpha bracelet
I want to ask? what is the name of the silver tool/object in seconds to 00:05.
In 00:06
its called *suspender clip*
Only two years late, but is it suggested to hammer start/end in order to avoid an unequal plane?
And what are the dimensions of the weaving machine&
I did it, it didn't come out nearly as nice and is a little rough to look at, but I did it. Thank you, AzureBlaze.
Can you upload pictures of it?
AzureBlaze okay, I see. Thanks! also, great video 👍
Has anyone braided the cord and ended with the patern braiding diaganally instead of horizontally like azureblaze was able to in the video? Im having trouble keeping my braid perpendicular to the braclet.
I don't have any knowledge in braiding cords but I want to make one, I just dont exactly understand how the patterns work? 🤦♂️
so it say's that i need 2 rows for a single pixel but the pattern already accommodates it. so is it just 2 layers across the entire band or is it four for the double row in the beginning?
wow thanks for the clothespin idea! it's a lot better than using old credit cards and old school ID cards lmao
(The pattern provided and the cord in the video are not the same in length at all.)
Most of the time and effort will go into the beginning and ending as after extension they are super long and take a while to braid.
Here is my updated pattern sheet for anyone to use (docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/122j1ar2WX6AHbfd3SmWcGCMX2G981Uv3Nwy8-GPW5Bc/edit?usp=sharing)
Column J is just a tile I colored in green to keep track of which rows I've completed, simply reset them all back to white to track your own progress.
Column K, are just marked rows that show those are extension rows I added to the original pattern.
Good luck, it's really a tough project but extremely rewarding.

My bracelet's back is not as tidy as yours, there are some other color, like the red isn't fully covering the back section. How to fix it?
I want that way I see at Amazon but the price of ribbon is to much sadly I can't buy it
Do you think it would look good with 24 strands?
Here's a video that shows you how: th-cam.com/video/6XfauuaNJ2I/w-d-xo.html

also for the orange, does the 16cm length stop at the row of just orange before the white comes into the braiding?

Lauren Houdson do you mean "slanted?" If so, just refer to the pattern sheet and the part of the video 3:07 on changing colors.
To further explain, it goes from the 8th bundle where you tie with orange colors on two rows, then continuing on to the 7th, tying them on 2 rows along with the 8th, going to the 6th, so on and so forth.
