    In todays video we take another look at Bambu Lab's X1 Carbon 3d Printer. This printer blew me away when I first got to test it out a few months ago and has had quite a few updates since. We will go over those updates, the state of the Kickstarter and when ordering will be available.

    I still prefer open source printers (currently building VzBoT330) but really applaud Bambu Labs for shaking up the industry at lower price points. I hope to see more of these turnkey printing capabilities becoming commonplace for the hobbyist/enthusiast.

      @Cthulhu No. Supposedly it's running its own firmware that's not even a pirated fork of one of the big open source ones (which is what most closed source printers do) but completely their own thing they wrote from scratch.

    • @Xploit66
      @Xploit66 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@TripleJAu I think that they would charge a fair bit more since there is probably a smaller over all market for it. how ever, most of the cost of making the printer would be the same since they could reuse all of the same electronics just making things like the frame, gantry, build plate, etc. larger. It realistically wouldn't cost them that much more to produce especially given the volume discounts they must get on materials. But the issue is the market is smaller, and a good chunk of the people that want a larger build volume want it because they "need" it so they could charge a premium for it.
      The x1 carbon is actually incredibly cheap for what it is but thats largely because they're trying to break into a new market (for them) and get a decent market share.. once they do that they won't have to be so competitive with pricing (I hope they do continue to innovate and keep the prices down though and don't get greedy the moment they are able to)

    • @librasd8087
      @librasd8087 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Xploit66 i agree, they probably can jump to the professional with this software and all the feature they have and they can do it building a heated chamber printer even with the same printing volume as the x1 and they could charge a lot more

      Bamboo labs recommends you use to glue stick to actually make it not adhere as much. I know that sounds counter intuitive but it puts a somewhat weekend barrier between the plate and your build. I recommend trying that and using supports for any overhangs over 45° and you should be good

    Just for clarity: air shipping wasn't an add-on option you could ask for. Air shipping was required for certain destinations where ground and sea wasn't available. It did have a side effect of getting printers to backers in certain countries faster. :)
    That said, early backers in Canada, the US, and I think the EU are all seeing their sea-transported printers showing up. Mine came 3 days ago, and I'm super happy! Glad to hear that 2 months in you're not seeing any unexpected issues.

    Well, it looks amazing and there seems to be a pretty good price/quality ratio. Still, since I'm a casual user, I don't sell what I print and I only print something that I need, for example cover pieces for the ends on the staircase fence, covers for air ducts, a gear for a power tool that broke... The prusa mini I have, sits idle most of the time. I may not print anything for a month, then maybe spend 24-48 hours printing non stop, then nothing for a couple of weeks, then a 6 hour print, and so on. I think this printer is too expensive for someone like me. I might be much more inclined to purchase, even for a slightly higher price, if the build volume was as large as that of prusa xl, that is 8 times the volume of the mini, x1 is just under 3x mini's volume. Just today I wanted to print something that goes right to the limit of 180mm, which fits, but not with added supports. So, bummer.

      That's what I found. Selling plastic parts and making a living off of it is very difficult. Yes, it's fun to design things but unless your prints are perfect, customers will not want to spend more than what they are accustomed to seeing with inkection-molded parts.

    • @LilApe
      @LilApe ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would just stick with the prusa, more reliable and you aren't a beta tester for them. Check the sub reddit for the X1, tons of people are having issues. One guy didn't even have a dozen prints on his before his X axis seized up. And looking at the pictures, something got jammed between the bronze bushing and one of his rails, scuffed and gouged his X axis rail. Happened because bambu doesn't put wiper seals on their bronze bushings. So debris can get between the rods and bushings. Your MK3S has wiper seals to prevent that.

      @@LilApe thanks for this. As nice as the Bambu seems on paper and from their aggressive advertising, I've been skeptical about it at that price point. I didn't want to be an early adopter for such an ambitious machine. So I actually skipped the Bambu and bought my first Prusa a month ago after owning some cheap Anycubic printers for a couple years (lot of frustration with those but that's another story). Another thing is that so much of the Bambu is proprietary and built in such a way that sourcing/replacing/upgrading parts and fixing printer troubles seems like it will be pretty limited or difficult.

    It really seams that this company wants to be a trusted player in the 3D printing universe. Let’s hope they don’t go the way of Snapmaker where the buyers or the original model were kept on the hook by promises of expansion units only to be let down when the second model was issued, and the original expansion units failed to materialise.

      @@Xploit66 They probably will be around for a while, but what I mean is, they can stop support for the X1 at any time. Say if they come out with a new version or totally different printer. Flashforged, quidi ultimaker, anycubic are just to name a few examples of manufacturers that have had proprietary printers in the past that are now no longer supported. As they come out with new printers, they drop the old. no software updates, no replacement parts, etc. Open source keeps the updates and parts availability around. Proprietary is fine in come cases, but almost never a good idea when it comes from china, imo

      Honestly, my feeling is that the X1 and the Vorons epitomise the two different subsets of the 3d printing community. Which is to say: a few years ago, being "into 3d printing" meant "I want to fiddle around building, tweaking, tuning, and modifying the printer." The hobby was as much about building the printer as it was actually printing things. Now, however, there are a *lot* of people who don't want to futz about with the printer, they just want it to *work*. For these people, the 3d printer is a tool to help them turn their imagination into a physical object, and they are interested in working on the machine itself the exact same amount as a carpenter is interested in working on his table saw: zero.
      If you are into *building* printers because that's your jam, build a Voron. The experience will probably be fun for you and you'll probably learn some things.
      If you want a machine that produces 3d printed parts with a minimum of fuss and time, buy an X1. The effort required to make the printer go is... honestly, in my 3-day-old experience, I've spent more time trying to make my microwave do what I wanted it to than I have making the X1C doing what I wanted it to.
      In terms of print quality, I don't have 1st hand experience but 3DPNero - who is part of the Voron team and also has an X1C - says they're about the same. Slicer profiles and tuning matter more than hardware, assuming you've hit a minimum standard. I suppose if print quality is your highest priority - well, then it comes down to how confident you are in your ability to build the Voron correctly.
      Lil Ape has a good point about long-term security, but that's true of anything. If you have the skills to build your own *anything*, you probably won't save money but you'll gain "support security." And of course Voron has been out longer so it has a much more robust community with many of the little problems discovered and fixes proposed.
      But nothing changes the reality that Vorons and X1s are aimed at very different people, and your choice should be based on whether or not you think building the printer yourself will be fun and entertaining!
