10 yrs later, ALL MacBooks now charge with UBC-C, and MagSafe is back for fast charging, so the charging options are greater. Also, the Apple charger is also USB-C, so the MagSafe cable is replaceable. Oh, and MacBooks now have pretty much all day battery life thanks to Apple Silicone and their greater efficiency over Intel.
The reason Apple restricts who can use MagSafe is yes to make some money but also to control the quality of products. A bad cable or power brick can destroy your Apple product. Buy the good ones folks.
