This was definitely not a crowd that was prepared for Babymetal. You hit the nail on the head about that. By contrast, Sonisphere 2014 was another crowd that was not prepared for them, but they were a massive crowd of Metalheads, and by the end of the set they were a massive crowd of Converts! Awesome, awesome job!

It is absolutely what you just asked for, a live performance with amazing audience participation! However I will say that no matter where or what size venue from the tiniest theatre to the largest arena, if it's a Babymetal audience, you will get a massive crowd participation throughout!

Glastonbury is a pop festival not metal. so for Babymetal to play there and get a reaction from the crowd is good but nothing like a true metal festival where most of the crowd knew who Babymetal was. and if you watch more of the videos from this festival you will Babymetal did have a small mosh pit at a pop festival. they were trying. lol. funny you say you wouldn't have heard of them from UK since there Babymetal has almost sold out wembley in 2016. they were just there at brixton. they come to download frequently. and their biggest beginning gig was Sonispere 2014 that showed the world three little Japanese girls could go to a metal festival and kick ass.

also, it can be hard to get into songs where they sing a language you don't understand. I know for a lot of people that's part of why they don't like K-Pop, J-Pop, etc....not because of the music, but not understanding the lyrics turns off a lot of people

Hey Drew! Nice reaction! You're right about Glastonbury, it's a pop festival really. As well all the tickets were sold before the lineups were announced so BabyMetal fans who didn't know they were going to play there couldn't get tickets. That all being said, I saw the whole stream live and by the time the band started playing KARATE a moshpit formed.... at Glastonbury! They won over the crowd and it was totally the right call for them to play there.

    💕 ⚡ 👋 ! / 🌞
    That was quite a run.
BABYMETAL played their first concerts of the year at Yokohama Arena on June 28th & 29th, then Glastonbury on the 30th.
They had the next day off, then played O2 Academy Brixton the day after that (July 2nd).
By all accounts the Brixton show was lit, but that was a headlining show, so the crowd was there for BABYMETAL.
They played both 'Starlight' and 'Syncopation' for the first time outside of Japan.

    • @dgray3771
      @dgray3771 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Also a lot of western fans that are particular Babymetal fans are more introvert. And would not totally be jumping and bouncing into eachother like the regular crowd for other bands would. And the show they put up is first class. There are not many bands that sound that close to their recording sound. They are that good. So even for non fans they are a delight to see on stage.

They were on early at 2.30 and yes the crowd were a bit unenthusiastic, but by the end of the set the crowd were won over..even had a mosh pit going !. A couple of days after this they played at Brixton... There's plenty of fancam videos, including one from the mosh pit during whole concert, it's like a pack of piranhas at feeding time ! .. check out karate live at download 2016, or "Ijime Dame Zettai" sonisphere 2014 and then "Road of Resistance" live in Japan.... And you'll see exactly what makes Baby Metal special !

I think most people have said the same thing... BABYMETAL did a 45 minute set on the Other Stage (right when Sir David Attenborough was on the main stage followed by Kylie). But they still got a good sized crowd. Yes it wasn't their usual crowd and at the start the crowd was quite subdued but by the end they were definitely alot more into the music. All the songs are on TH-cam from Glastonbury and if you want to watch them in order the set was
    1) Megitsune
    2) Elevator Girl
    3) Shanti
    4) Distortion
    5) PA PA YA!!
    6) Gimme Chocolate!!
    7) KARATE
    8) Road of Resistance
It should be noted the two days before the Glastonbury show (the Sunday) they played two 20,000 person gigs in Japan then flew direct, played Glastonbury the next day and then the O2 in Brixton, London before heading back to Japan for two more concerts!
As a suggestion compare the crowd in the official MV for PA PA YA! - that was recorded a week later in Japan - and you can see what one of their live arena shows is like :D.
As for ages Su the lead singer is now 21 and Moa turned 20 four days after Glastonbury.. (the other girl is Riho, one of three dancers that rotate to fill the spot left when Yui left the group last year).

The festival was sold out for months before Babymetal was added to the ticket, so not a lot of fans, and this was a pop festival, and not a rock or metal festival, so definitely out of their element. But the further they went into the set, the more the crowd responded. They made some fans that day, and had amazing energy considering this was on a Sunday afternoon, and they played a big show in Yokohama on Saturday night just hours before.
Babymetal is something of a reverse import, they had a cult following in Japan, but broke big in the metal/rock community in the west, which then brought a lot of interest in the rock community in Japan. Their last album broke the Billboard Top 40, which you don't see Japanese artists do. They transcend language and countries, truly an international fan base. They sold out Wembley SE Arena.
Karate from Download 2016 is a good video of them playing in England to a crowd; Road of Resistance Live in Japan is a good crowd reaction in Japan. Ijime, Dame, Zettai live at Sonishpere 2014 is another good video.

  • @gaplauche
    @gaplauche 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

Nice reaction, Drew. You're right, Glastonbury is not their typical crowd. They did win more and more of the crowd over as their set went on, however, and I recall at least one moshpit by the end. The sound mixing and mic'ing of the drums were bad on the stream for this show. The official music video has amazing live footage and shows the featured artist, Thai rapper F. Hero, but it uses studio audio and Amuse is trigger happy on blocking reactions to it.
Su and Moa are 21 and 20 now. Yui left the band last year. The new third girl, Riho, is one of three rotating support dancers (she's not mic'ed like Moa) filling in Yui's spot in the formation. There's no full, permanent replacement for Yui, at least not yet, and there may never be.
Road of Resistance (Live in Japan) is an unmissable classic for crowd interaction. Ijime, Dame, Zettai (Live at Sonisphere 2014) is also important as their first major performance outside of Japan where they won over a huge crowd of metalheads.
Check out Rondo of Nightmare with the Mischiefs of God Intro for a powerful solo performance by young Su and solos by the musicians.
If you're into complex prog metal a la Dream Theater, check out the Tokyo Dome performance of Tales of the Destinies and The One as a single video on Daily Motion: www.dailymotion.com/video/x5ggoil.

Great reaction video. as suggested before : Babymetal Karate live in download 2016(in the pouring rain) or Babymetal - Ijime Dame Zettai live in Sonisphere 2014. The Glastonbury crowd didn`t go as mad as the audience at their own gigs - especially in Japan - because they were new to Babymetal, but they sure made a lot of new fans. I do love this video for the fact you can see the sheer joy of the girls performing

Another good reaction - and not a bad performance especially when you consider they played two big concerts in Yokohama on the Friday and Saturday, flew to the UK and opened the stage early on Sunday afternoon at Glastonbury.
Many have already said about Glastonbury being a mainly pop festival and the tickets selling out long before the line up is even announced, so the UK Babymetal army had no idea they would be there and couldn't get tickets when they were finally announced. The people in the crowd here didn't know them at all and were probably just curious to see what was happening as Babymetal was the first act on that stage that day. There was the one Japanese flag you spotted and the bloke on the barrier with long hair is in a Babymetal t-shirt, so there were at least two people there who knew them.
Two days later they played at a sold out Brixton Academy ... that was my first chance to see them live and neither they nor the crowd disappointed.
A better UK festival appearance for you to watch would have been them playing 'Distortion' at Download 2018 where a lot of people were there for Babymetal or going back further Download 2016 where a big crowd waited 45 minutes for the rain to stop and for the stage to be cleared of water just to see them - and then it rained hard during their set and the crowd stayed on. Sonisphere 2014 was a major milestone, most of the crowd didn't know them there before they started, a few that did were potentially hostile before they started ... they were calling for more when they finished their set after just 5 songs.
You asked their ages - as of today Su-metal is 21, Moametal is 20. They have been playing with Babymetal since 2010 when they we 12 and 11.

One of their first concerts outside Japan was at the Sonisphere Rock Concert in the UK with all the world's biggest rock bands. By mistake they were put on the main stage and went down really well. That's one reason why they are known so well.

Great reaction, this song is from their new album "Metal Galaxy" that will be out october. Personally, this didn't got me, but it's still fun to listen.
Like some people are saying, go for "Road of Resistance" live, check "Karate" at Rock am Ring, "Akatsuki" live (this is more traditional, less theatrical, to say something).
And man, do yourself a favour and react to "Ijime,Dame,Zettai" live at Sonisphere, that was different, cause the legend of Babymetal in Europe was born there, in the UK. The story behind it is epic, I just let you a part of the top comment on that video as a sneak peek: "OK, some background. The song title actually means "No More, Bullying, Forever". It was the ending song at this show, where they managed to turn an epic FAIL into an epic victory.
    - This was their first tour outside of Japan, and their first UK show
    - They booked a small stage but, for an unknown reason, they were moved to the main stage at the last minute. Instead of 3-5 thousand of their loyal fans they faced 30-50 thousand (?) trve metalheads."
And now, you are ready. Go and read the entire comment cause this is how legends are born: th-cam.com/video/Ro-_cbfdrYE/w-d-xo.html

While this is the first song I've really liked from the new album, it still pales in comparison to almost anything from their first two albums. The rap segment in the breakdown was in Thai, by a rapper from Thailand called F Hero. Babymetal has more fans in the West than they do in the East, as heavy metal has a limited audience in Japan. It scares most Japanese people. For a better experience, I'd heavily recommend their performance of Ijime, Dame, Zettai at Sonisphere 2014: th-cam.com/video/Ro-_cbfdrYE/w-d-xo.html

P.S.: I seriously don't know, how Suzuka can sing a straight tone with all the jumping in this particular choreography...
P.P.S.: Next one: *"Road of Resistance"* live in Japan (at Saitama Super Arena in 2015). Seriously! th-cam.com/video/zTEYUFgLveY/w-d-xo.html

They are big in the UK. They sold out Wembley arena when their last album was released, and broke the record for the most merchandise sold at Wembley arena. This was a pop festival not a metal festival.

Welcome to The One! So glad you are enjoying them. Road of Resistance live in Japan is a great crowd interaction video. If you want to hear the Bands true talent (Kami Band is their name btw) check out Rondo of Nightmare with Mischief of Gods intro. It's amazing!! Oh, and the symbol the hold up with their hands is the sign of the Fox God! It 's all part of the bands lore. Love from the Babymetal family!

Good honest reaction. You should check out their official video for PA PA YA!! It's footage from a live performance with a true BABYMETAL crowd and rapper F. HERO present. i’m sure everyone’s said it already, but ijime dame zettai live at sonisphere 2014 is one you might wanna see-they got moved to a much bigger stage/crowd, so they ended up playing for 50,000 people instead of 5,000 (who for the most part had no clue who babymetal was), and they ended up winning them over at the end :)

  • @fiftysomething4717

It took a while in the UK metal community to get into them, but they picked up speed very quickly and a have sold out Wembley arena which is proof of their popularity.I think the metal and rock community are just more willing to embrace other cultures and styles of music in their own genre. Just look at this year's download festival and you will have seen bands from NEPAL, JAPAN AND MONGOLIA. I think the band from New Zealand called Alien Weaponary sing in Maori. Some of the older rockers did have a bit of an issue with watching them but even some of them slowly came around and got the vibe.Check out SHADOWMAKER by LOVEBITES if you want to see some great Japanese power metal sung in English.

They just had over 12000 people in Wembley. You can see also the reaction of the public in the download festival in 2016 or in Sonisphere in 2014. You can also see them singing with Rob Halford (Judas Priest) at the APMAs awards in 2016. You can also see reports of the tour they made um USofA to see that this isn't just music known by a small community of fans. (by the way j-pop is not japanese hip hop, but japanese pop)

hit the nail on the head with the crowd talk there. they rocked sonisphere because it was a crowd of metal heads, when this one was not. the Babymetal fans that WERE in the crowd are currently in a bit of a “shock” because Yuimetal left the group in 2018, and the girl(s) that replaced her took people aback. we weren’t expecting them to “replace” Yui in performances. we understand what’s going on now but the new girl definitely sent ripples in the fanbase, so there was a LOT of confusion.

    BABYMETAL - Ijime,Dame,Zettai - Live at Sonisphere 2014,UK (OFFICIAL)
    th-cam.com/video/Ro-_cbfdrYE/w-d-xo.html
Mentioned in the comments a couple of times already, just mentioning it again because this is a MUST SEE!
If you want to know how they won over a metal crowd on their first live performance in the UK, on their first EU tour, this video is it.
They were virtually unknown, were supposed to play on a smaller stage but for some reason the decision was made to move them to the main stage.
Several stories do the rounds, how the organiser of the festival wánted them to fail, how the change was last minute,.....
Since then these stories have been more or less "debunked", what the truth really is... well, does it really matter?
What you wíll see is Babymetal killing it on stage and warming up a huge metalhead crowd to them, when most of the crowd was just waiting for the band after them.
There is also a video of them performing Karate there, you should watch it, but you already know that song.

I saw them at London's wembley arena its was packed and the crowd action was great as you normally see in their video's but the difference with Glastonbury it's not really their fan's or a metal crowd to get the engagement they did their was amazing. But they did have London's Wembley packed with a very engaged fan base with a crazy amount of energy.
I would recommend you watch road to resistance live next :)
