A mild solution, would be to write an autobiography before becoming a Cast, including your thoughts and feelings about becoming a Cast, and having a trusted person either hand it to you after the processing, or find a way to download it into your new mind. You won't necessarily feel any attachment to those memories, but it will make the change a little easier to deal with.
Just wanna say that not all CASTs are doomed to get the memory loss problem, since Maria, Regius, and Lucotte all retained their memories, among others
imagine on your dead bed, the guy making your coffin come up and said "hey would you like to become either a human-size Gundam or a sexy robot maid ?" if your answer is yes, then you will become a CAST
1:59 Actually the terms "CAST and Android" are interchangeable in PSO and "Android" is what the CASTs were called in PSIV with Forren Wren being an Android in contrast to his cyborg predecessor, Shiren Wren. I think this distinction is pretty important as while CASTs could use techs in PSU, they were still androids and not cyborgs like Shiren Wren and the PSO2 CASTs.
I swear in one game, I think it was PSO Episode 3, the CASTs actually decided "Android" was a derogatory term, which I found interesting. Heck the rise of the term CAST is interesting because it comes from the weird abbreviations of PSO1 with characters called HUnewearl, FOmar, and RAcast, much of the playerbase just sort of adopted "CAST" as a term because it was shorter than Android. It's also amusing because I'm 90% sure the name comes from Dreamcast since that's the system PSO was on and all that. Hmm...maybe I should make my own CAST video sometime since Phantasy Star Zero switched me from a Numan main to a CAST main thanks to Ogi and Lindow being too awesome. There's a lot of unique quirks to the race that have appeared throughout the series. I'm particularly fond of how in PSU, the CAST planet DIDN'T become a machine covered polluted wasteland but basically a giant freaking nature park because the CASTs actually CARED about nature and the planet.
@@GELTONZ "I think it was PSO Episode 3, the CASTs actually decided "Android" was a derogatory term, which I found interesting" Didn't they favor the term "humanoid" over "cast"? "It's also amusing because I'm 90% sure the name comes from Dreamcast since that's the system PSO was on and all that" Seems like a bit of s stretch to me. Wouldn't "cast" as in a mold, like the "cast" in "die-cast" make more sense? Depends, if I could finish up my life first, once I start getting old and tired, and maybe I could keep a record of my past life, or have people I know and trust guide me after conversion. That being said if it was possible without memory loss or other mental issues I would 200% go for it, cast my flesh aside and embrace the durability and endurance of steel!
Being a CAST would be kinda fun... I didn't know the memory loss was a thing though. Thanks you for making this video! I love CASTS and have been begging for lore!
The memory loss started to be phased out at the turn of the new century. Thanks to technological advances, photon sickness could be detected and treated earlier, creating a breed of both combat and civilian CASTs, the latter of which would be easily upgraded to combat upon the individual's request. Older casts like Regeus, Maria, Risa and KIREEK were prone to mechanical failures and random reboots if not properly maintained. None of these issues were possible to cure as crucial files on CAST conversion procedures were destroyed, possibly by an internal entity within ARKS.
Despite the downsides, I'd probably bite the bullet and become a CAST, since the memory loss is a very negligible downside, and the sanity thing, seems to be a pretty rare issue as while I have only recently gotten back into Phantasy Star with the NA release of PSO2, I think Risa is the only example of a "insane" CAST.
The story I came up for my CAST in NGS reflects this. Her photon affinity was too powerful that ARKS would rather weaponize it, but in order not to risk dying, she had to get a CAST body to limit herself. She wrote her memories down and though her change was a success, it was at the hand of unlicensed black-market surgeons, which caused her have dulled emotions and act somewhat more robotically. She tries to make the situation lighter by often speaking like a robot with lines such as "You are being terminated, please do not resist." And such when a trial starts, but sometimes gets carried away, and makes those around her worried that she might be turning actually robotic and losing her upbeat, passionate self forever. Regardless, she remains a very powerful ARKS defender, now with proper control of her photons, and is no longer a danger to herself, and others around her.
being a cast doesn't seem so bad the memory loss is acceptable to be almost immortal and defend people losing memory seems like a good deal in most scenario's

@@Zeomantic they are built with administrative prowress over photon capability and intended to reduce the number of people required for a certain task. Xierra was designed to take over administrative control, while Xiao was "off duty", as well as tending to the needs of the Guardians (being you and Matoi). This was due to the sheer amount of information that required to be processed and thus she would spend all her days doing research (notably asking ARKS about their experience with VEGA, and how to improve them further. and example is the introduction of "older tech" to use visual recognition as well as photon radar to track Luminmechs).
