A few years ago I removed all synthetic fibers from bedding and replaced with wool, linen, cotton, bamboo, and down. Since the mattress is not so easy to do this, I put latex mattress topper with cotton cover that completely wrapped the mattress because I figured the worst thing we can do is breath in synthetic fibers every night for 8-10 hours. Funny thing is I didn't extrapolate this practice to clothing until very recently or my dishes. Your show is a good kick in the pants to just start getting rid of as much synthetics and plastic in my home as possible. Mentioning bedding would have been a good part of your discussion as to me this is the biggest exposure we have.

I believe nano sized zeolite can detox/remove microplastics. Studies have shown this can be done in wastewater, no published human studies yet, but zeolite is safe to ingest, so may be a safe way to mitigate the problem without chelating important trace minerals. No refrigeration, all these companies do not care about your health they will happily kill you sooner to make money. Some will refrigerate though, the smaller the company the more likely they are to use a refrigerated trailer, if it’s a mega corporation it’s about a 0% chance from my experience.

A very thorough look at microplastics and plasticizers. Probably the best video available talking about this! We definitely need 10000x more testing of food products straight off the shelf to help understand the patterns of the the most concentrated sources. One important source I've heard about is sewage biowaste grown crops and feed. Municipal sewage systems output is massive polluted with nylon and polyester microfibers from clothing. Applying biowaste to grow crops seems like a clever use of human biomass but it is believed that these fibers can directly enter the food being grown. Seems that until we can find a solution to filter it (is this even possible??) we should stop doing this, or know what crops are being most affected.

I’m so heartbroken. I just had a full on crying session. Humans have successfully found a way to toxify the earth at the micro level in a way that cannot be undone. What does it matter if we eliminate micro plastics from our own bodies if they just end up being dumped back into the environment? How can this be fixed? All the plants and animals accumulating this stuff in their tissues. I’m devastated. I haven’t felt this way since I learned where meat comes from and about CAFOs as a young child.

I think microplastics represent the purest form of the desecration of nature. In films it's always portrayed as the destruction of environments, such as in Avatar where the humans are mining and deforesting Pandora. But the form taken in reality has been much more pernicious. Small, microscopic, and invading every square inch of our entire planet, both inside and outside of all organisms.

I make a point of researching how people did everyday things before plastic was used. I read old books and ask my elders.
For instance, my dad told me that they used to freeze meat and fish by dipping it in water, freezing, dipping again, etc. until it had a thick coat of ice. This completely prevents freezer burn! So it's actually better than plastic wrap.

Thank you dr Rhonda. About 15 years ago, I had to do extensive research into micro plastics due to personal health problems. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be much progress regarding the decrease or elimination of those microplastics. Pretty much everything you presented was already available as information back then... The picture you painted is quite sad, that we humans are doing this to ourselves and our environment - without much hope for a change.
    A few comments/questions:
    1. I don't recall you talking about our skin absorbing microplastics from clothing. Is this the case? You recommend switching to natural fibers - for those of us in our menopause years, it could be impossible. I've been wearing a lot more fleece and "plastic" clothing since suffering from hot flashes. The sweat wicking fabric has made my life bearable. No way I'm switching back to natural fabrics and changing a few times per day... Hopefully I'm not absorbing too much microplastics though while wearing these.
    2. Reverse osmosis is an option to remove microplastics from our water; there are different types of filters and many of these RO waste a lot of water when flushing the filters, sometimes 5-6x the amount of water produced for consumption. Getting rid of one problem to create another problem is not ideal. Any other option you can suggest that would be mindful of water consumption?
    3. Growing our own broccoli sprouts seem to be a winning idea ;). For binding microplastics and getting them out of our body: how about cilantro / zeolite/ activated charcoal ?
    4. Sweating the microplastics out: do you think the microplastics expulsion rate could be magnified if doing thermal contrast therapy, meaning alternating bouts of hot/cold in an hour or two, instead of just sweating in a sauna?
    5. Is there a particular way that is preferred for reducing or eliminating microplastics that have crossed the blood brain barrier into the brain?
Many thanks - love your podcasts!

There are many sources of PFAS in the environemnt and in our households. But in addition to industrial exposures (workplace or dumping of chemicals that contaminate water sources), it needs to be remembered that freshwater fish and seafood are a major source of elevated PFAS levels in the general population. Bile acid sequestrants (pharmacalogical as well as natural such a psyllium) are one route for shortening the half life.

Hi Dr. Patrick, thank you so much for this informative video. I knew about some of these things, but I learned a lot as well. I have a question though. I understand RO water filters remove a lot including the minerals you mentioned. However, is water a sufficient source of your daily minerals anyway? Shouldn’t we really get these from somewhere else (food, supplements, etc.) in order to get the RDA necessary for your body? Thanks!

So, we need to be extremely wealthy to apply many of these methods to lower exposure. Also, the majority of the world is not going to do or be able to even comprehend this. Something like 70% of humans on earth live on less than $10 dollars a day. Governments need to be more mindful and we already know how impossible that can be especially with so many countries more concerned with greed, power and war.
I miss being a little kid. To be blissfully unaware of how awful humankind is.

BPA is also restricted by several of the aforementioned regulations, including the FDA. Each country has their version of it, but it is all similar.
BPA has not been used in the manufacture of water bottles nor indeed anything in contact with any food item for a couple decades.
The compound used now is PET and not PC, which is polycarbonate and contains trace levels of BPA, generally

If we spend all our time/money on all the micro things we won't have any left for the macro things that most people don't have managed yet, which have a much larger impact.
Example: I wasted a couple hours contacting plumbers who said they won't even install RO systems under the sink, because they're made of cheap parts that constantly break and flood houses (already happened to my neighbor). They want to do it on a main filter line but said not to bother until you need new pipes.
We can look at fear-based solutions not backed by science, but rather speculation "just to play it safe" but we'd get so much more bang for our buck by just doing something macro like not buying bottled water except on rare occasions like air travel.

    • @Elem70
      @Elem70 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yup. There’s only so much we can do/control, and best to concentrate efforts on the biggest offenders and/or low hanging fruit. Box fan + Merv13 filter = cheap and effective air filter for home. Bring stainless steel coffee mug to Starbucks. Get rid of Tupperware in exchange for set of Pyrex. Sleep well, exercise a lot, have good relationships.

Q for Dr. Patrick - I don't know if you communicate with Brian Johnson - he has a video and he talks about blood test kits for plastics - and he says he's compiling the largest dataset of this data. I don't take his claims of eternal youth very seriously, but do you have an opinion on either the blood test or the dataset? Is there another large scale dataset of plastic bioaccumulation?

There was a recent study that was testing micro plastics before and after RO. The RO did remove most microplastics but also released some. However the study did not cover the RO membrane itself so things like age of the membrane, maintenance schedule, brand etc was not listed. So more research needs to be done for a definitive answer.
      Geeze, stress never ends!
