    Am I the only who is annoyed more by the border police's attitude than the actual law? Yes the law was broken, but there was no need to call her a liar or treat her like she just smuggled 3 tonnes of cracks

      That kind of thing happens all the time. Do you imagine that government employees feel obligated to be nice in the way that private sector service workers are? The disdain many feel for them is earned. Not all of them are bad but so many are that on the whole they suck.

      That is not the case with an immigration infraction. They still need to be seen as eligible for American Citizenship, which a report of lying to immigration officials will bar for quite a few years. Unfortunately, it is a happy ending long into the couples future.

      my friend who is in states paid 175k for 6 years education as international student.
      so how come you say that, you should not take this much money, you imagine him to have earned this much money for his education by this age. I think americans don't have this much money even after they cross their 50's. Rich Asians and even those well to do middle class Asian parent’s prioritizes their children’s education and are willing to pay for their children’s college tuition. They are willing to shed even more money for those hard to pursue courses like law and medicine. It’s a normal thing in my country here in SE Asia that parents pay for their children’s education until college. For those who cant afford it, they apply for scholarships or be a working student.

      Ironically, this is what many US citizens complain of regularly in dealings with the police...sometimes, people use their authority to belittle others just to make themselves feel better... Just because they can... Or because they have a predudice against someone from another country, social class, neighbourhood... Or skin colour. Always wrong!

    This hit painfully close to home. My husband of over two years who lives in Egypt has recently been denied a visa to come to the United States. He already passed his I-130 (green card) and he had his interview at the American Embassy in Cairo a year ago. We just found out that they denied is visa because they said he married me for a green card. No proof, no asking for additional data, nothing. Just a bigoted case worker at the consular office at the American Embassy. And the case will take about two years to come back to the United States where I can appeal the decision. That is our immigration system for those who follow the laws and policies of the United States Of America.

    3)after informing the immigration officer that I am her husband, the immigration officer asks my wife why she has different surname to me;

Withing 3 seconds after she started talking, he literally yelled out to her (and i quote directly) "stop talking! listen to what i am asking you carefully, what's your usual address in Australia..."

      On the flip side, on our way back from China in 2013, my (then) wife wrote "...and things" on a customs declaration form. I told her that is a red flag to ANY customs agent and we will be detained; she scoffed, "Do you really think we're supposed to list every single item we're bringing back?" YES. Guess which family was pulled aside for additional questioning? Guess who then threw his incredulous spouse under the CBP bus by saying, "You filled out the form. You tell him what 'and things' means."

    Every international student can relate to this story. You never know what is going to happen when you cross through immigration. Even if your paperwork is in order, you will always encounter an officer who does not understand your visa and wants to accuse you of something being wrong. If you are lucky the officers at the secondary inspection are more knowledgeable and will let you pass after a very long wait. This story is so true, any small detail that goes wrong can ruin years of studying and hard work, and close the door to any future job opportunities. This is so sad, as her next step was to either hire an expensive immigration lawyer, or stay in her home country or work somewhere else. The boyfriend would have had to follow her or move on.

For instance I've been asked "do you love your parents?", "what grades did you get on your exam? was it stressful?", "do you like living in UK?", "does your family miss you?". I mean that happens when they turn into small talk mode, but gosh these are not appropriate questions for border control, especially when it's such a worrying situation for international student, on the contrary, when I'm passing the control with my european friend, they don't ask him anything.. feels weird

But next to me was a guy with brown skin and middle eastern features, but his accent, his smart clothes, his mannerisms and sense of humour were 100% American. Upon return to the US at Niagra Falls, our passports were consfiscated, and told where to park the vehicle. Upon entering an office we were told to be seated. The wait was a while. We were told we were not detained, yet passports were not returned. Again we asked are we detained. The answer was no. No info as to why we were "waiting" upon multiple requests. Finally passports were returned and we were free to leave. Bor was a retired lifer Marine and Gulf War vet. Both of us over sixty. My personal feel is all about power and control. Until these personnel are videoed abuses will occur. I have learned to fear my government. The government that is to protect. Agents of my government abused me.

Immigration staff were rude and arrogant and for a while it looked like I would be turned around. In the end it turned out ok and my visit was a delight. In my 3 weeks there I met lots of people from all over the country. It's true, they don't have a clue what irony is. They get very defensive, even angry when confronted with anything that contradicts their mind-set. In many ways they can be very nieave. Their trust seems to be only skin deep. Everything is black and white to them It took a while to recognise this, then I enjoyed myself. Returning through the airport I had a gun pointed at me through the x-ray machine as I'd put my house keys in my pocket!I'd love to live there!

A little intelligent planning would have averted this ugly fact pattern from playing out as it did. Also, the U.S. boyfriend planning a proposal at the airport was madness. Sometimes I feel like, whether or not you're allowed into a country depends on which immigration officer you meet that day, and what their mood is like.
    I was once refused entry into into Singapore, for reasons I still don't know to this day. I was living and working as an expat in nearby Malaysia, and all I had wanted to do was cross into Singapore for the weekend to watch Scottish rock band Travis live.
    I had purchased the ticket before leaving, had more than enough money to spend for the weekend, had visited Singapore several times, never before denied entry, and was carrying a powerful British passport.
    But, all that meant nothing to the morose immigration officer who never even made eye contact with me. It was like he had made up his mind very early on that he wouldn't let me in, no matter what
