1.0 Introduction
In the field of control systems engineering, attaining desired performance
characteristics requires a high degree of proficiency in modelling, analysing, and fine-tuning
systems. In this assignment, the Matlab/Simulink software tool is used to explore the
application of these principles. This evaluation focuses on three main areas: system
modelling, open-loop response testing, and closed-loop controller design using proportional
(P), proportional-integral (PI), and proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control strategies.
The main focus of the assignment is "Modelling and Control of Dynamic Systems
using Matlab/Simulink." It includes investigating both closed- and open-loop systems,
designing controllers, and using tuning techniques to achieve peak performance. The main
goals are to within the Matlab/Simulink environment, model a dynamic system. Analyse the
modelled system's open-loop response. For closed-loop systems, design P, PI, and PID
controllers with an emphasis on meeting predetermined transient response requirements. For
controller tuning, use Simulink's PID Tuner and the Ziegler-Nichols Method. Also discuss
and evaluate the findings to ascertain the best course of action for implementing the control
system.
The principles of control theory guide this assignment. The theoretical basis is
provided by closed-loop systems, open-loop systems, and the P, PI, and PID control
principles. PID Tuner and Ziegler-Nichols Method are essential tools for fine-tuning
controllers to satisfy particular transient response requirements. This is a cooperative project
that requires groups of students up to five members to choose a Matlab/Simulink model with
an online second or third-order transfer function. Students should become proficient in
controller design, open-loop testing, system modelling, and the real-world application of
tuning techniques by using these principles.
