To be fair, I never expected a game from a smaller developer with history involving SOMA's development to operate at the same level as, say, the Dead Space remake or the modern Resi titles. Having played the original back in the day, I expected a game that developed its atmosphere using something other than tense encounters - and I got exactly that. The tension was in Derceto itself, in the patients all having that distinct "Roaring Twenties Antebellum Sanatorium" thing going for them, in the VO'd documents and the sense of history provided to the place. Yes, the shooting model was subpar and the enemy designs aren't jaw-dropping, but this isn't exactly trying to be a Resident Evil. I never played the initial "Alone in the Dark" because I expected inventive models; we barely had fifteen polygons to work with for the entire game! I'm deliberately exaggerating, yes, but the initial game expected you to provide a lot of imagination and forward thinking to its combat encounters, both in how to solve them and how to handle them more traditionally. If anything, I'm actually sad that the game calls "'tossing a rock or a brick" an "opportunity attack", seeing as you're never really given a chance to exploit the environment to get rid of the rank-and-file baddies, the way the first game asked you to.
I had to pick it up. As a huge horror fan, it being my favorite genre of games, I have to show support so we get more from. I really like it. Certainly not perfect, but pretty cool. Solving puzzles in a mansion sure is nostalgic. I personally am having a way better time with it than I did Alan Wake 2.
I bought the game earlier yesterday then end up falling asleep waiting for the release 😅 finna play now and just enjoy the experience for what it is. I dont expect this game to be objectively better than the new resident evil remakes or dead space especially from a smaller team of devs with no prior release of this magnitude from what i researched.. im just happy i get to experience this game in some form of fashion now modernized yet still feeling traditionally old at the same time..i hope anyone else who picks it up will enjoy it as a survival horror fan..
I played Alone in the Dark 2 when I was 12 when it came out. It was creepy and the puzzles were difficult, I put the game down more than a few times, but ended up finishing it and loved it.
SPOILER ALERT: I loved the mansion and its exploration. Although the trailers gave me the expectation that i was gonna face and interview its residents, and it totally wasn't the case; it was empty. All interactions reduced to cutscenes. I liked how they made this dark New Orleans ambience, which is something i haven't lived before. Although i would prefer to explore it, more than being just linear scenarios. The combat was questionable. The ammo is low, but you can find it everywhere (in some weird places), so it's less believable for me; it felt artificial. Going into the snow and into the desert felt like too much, for me. It was very far from the experience. You encounter the Dark Man some times, but you never beat it. The puzzles were okay, but i felt they were more interesting at the first part of the game. The reading, like in the classic Alone in the Dark, were pretty interesting as well. The final battle was so over the top. I mean, if you compare it to the classic Alone in the Dark, the final bosses are simple and you beat them by doing like a little puzzle (even in A New Nightmare). But in here, you face many enemies and a giant Resident Evil monster, and everything ends up exploding (like in so many games). But the story was weakest thing, for me. The characters and the set up were fine, were attractive. Yet, you feel that nothing happens. The 2 protagonists almost never interact with each other; they don't even seem to be both solving something; just the player (so there's just 1 protagonist). There's never any conflict with the residents, and you predict the ending ritual from the start. I mean, you feel you're just waiting for it. You know that everything will end up there, and everything you do before lacks importance, for that matter. Anyway, i think this game was a heroic bet, and i hope they can set the base to recover this franchise. I expect a sequel, but at the same time, i wonder what more can they do with the setting, with all that was shown in this one. An Alone in the Dark 3 remake would be very interesting, for me. EDIT: Although i think the music fulfills its purpose, it's very typical or appealing to the Noire and jazzy genre. Something i loved about the original 4 Alone in the Dark was how ORIGINAL the music was, and how it really helped build their dark worlds. Specially Alone in the Dark 3 and 4. And i prefer that; something new and refreshing, instead of an imitation.
Good take. I’m in the ‘support it anyway’ camp, and I’m not that far in but so far have enjoyed the game. Perhaps after I’m done I’ll have stronger opinions. I’m feeling the missed potential thing, though, and absolutely loved ‘New Nightmare’ - this was one of the very first video games I played on PC when I started to get back into them as a young adult. Laughed very hard when you in the ’BYB’ vid kept saying “Older-School,” basically calling out people like me who are … well, Old. And that’s fair. And funny. 😄
Alone in the dark a new nightmare is what got me into horror games, i remember being like 4 or 5 and peaking into my uncles room while he was up late and i asked what he was playing and he said scooby doo and invited me in and i remember pissing my pants when i saw one of the cutscenes. Been obsessed w horror and that feeling ever since. Im ngl i love playing horror games on lsd
Its one of these games where right now mostly got ngative scores but after like 5 or 10 years people will be like " Yeah this game was great, yes it has its flaws but the oldschool vibe etc etc:...''
It's a hidden gem. Gmanlives gave a great and detailed review. He really likes the game a lot. I think gamers should look at his review to see the other side of the coin.
I pre-ordered the Collectors Edition of the 2008 Alone in the Dark... which ended up at a pawn shop a few days later. The original game was a long time ago, I can't remember specifics... but I do recall the game pulled you into it's eerie atmosphere. The game was fascinating, graphics and perspective was revolutionary (for its time!) and if I recall... it wasn't easy to survive! The 2008 version was none of those things.
I bought the game because I want them to have another shot at a sequel to build on what they've done and address the things that don't work. So far I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would.
7 hours in and I agree 100% it’s so close but the combat mechanics miss but I love the puzzles(no googling) and lay out of the house was fun and save system was very smooth.
The reviews of the main game seem to reflect how I felt about the demo….wispy and bare branches substantive-wise, yet simultaneously many different visuals going on. I love puzzles, horror and period pieces, but evidence of it being very mixed probably means this one is going to be bought later on in a sale.
I grew up with my dad playing the original alone in the dark trilogy before jumping into the new nightmare, years later. I cant remember which game it was but there was a clown thing in a room with a kid and a guy tried to save the kid but this clown would move closer and eventually get him... That was my introduction to the franchise, behind my dads desk chair, in the mid 90s
I loved it actually ... as I expected because I played a similar experience like Call of Cthulhu ,Sinking city.. psychological horror is right at my alley not just jumpscares.
I'm a fan of the Alone in the dark series, so this was always on my hit list, I had a feeling it my fall short of expectations, but I'm a very forgiving gamer, so I'm still gonna give it a chance, but taking all your points on board from both videos
This game makes me afraid for silent hill 2 remake because essentially alone in the dark got mainly criticized for it combat. I believe the original alone in the dark had terrible combat. Silent hill 2 also has clunky combat and the weapon variety was super dry. Reason being because it helps add to the story that the main characters are normal everyday people, not action hero’s like Leon or Chris from resident evil. On paper, this game should be praised for updating a classic, it checked most of the boxes and added some extra stuff like David harbor and Jodie comer. I am shocked it didn’t do better. I’m gonna give it a chance anyway.
The narrative and storytelling of this game is very Silent Hill/Twin Peaks-y vibe. There's much subtlety within the story and the characters. I think that's the best part of the game. Not surprising seeing that the writer of Soma (great story) is the head writer of this game
Just because someone likes/doesn’t like a game, doesn’t mean it will be the same for you. Just play what you want and don’t worry about everyone’s opinions. Make up your own minds.
Just by looking at this game, it seems they did a MUCH better job at rebooting their series more than Konami has with Silent Hill so ill give them a major break.
I'm only about 3 hours in but I think it's awesome. Its got a classic survival horror feel to it. The combat is pretty bad but my favorite game of all time, Silent Hill 2 has terrible combat but these types of games you don't play because of the combat. It sucks cause rise of the ronin and Dragons dogma 2 come out tomorrow so it's gonna be a busy month but I'm definitely excited to get back to alone in the dark.
The original Alone in the dark man, was my first 3rd person horror game. It was my favorite, unforgettable back in 1992. The 2 sequels were ok, but the first game was the best. The remake is not how I remember the first game.
I plan on picking it up tbh, love the setting and I honestly never wanted it to be similar to RE. Because as much as I love the RE franchise I just wanted something different.
Alone in the Dark 2008 was my first experience with the series. It wasnt as good as Resident Evil and Silent Hill but I really enjoyed it. It was something new with its own identity. I picked up the most recent Alone in the Dark and id say its the same again. Its not perfect but its different. I enjoy survival horror but dont want to play the same franchises over and over again. Alone in the Dark gave me a different experience and I enjoyed it. Hopefully they make a sequel.
I played for an hour tonight. I am a fan of Harbour from Stranger Things and Comer from Killing Eve. So far, it could be anyone reading the lines. But I’ll finish it anyway because if anything it’s dumb fun
Let's talk about this SET! JAKE! The set is looking MINT! I can smell the leather bound books and rich mahogany through the screen! But legit, if you were going for that Bruce Wayne sort of vibes, you NAILED it! Great job!
Everything I'm seeing from people I like to listen to indicates that I shouldn't buy it now but should probably check it out when it's on a deep sale. I was pretty hopeful for this one, this series deserves its place in gaming history even though it's not as prolific as other horror titles. But ultimately I don't think it's been good since the PlayStation 1
I kinda knew Jake was gonna like it some but find it lacking. I feel like I know his tastes a bit. Personally, I love these AA indie horror games. You can tell they're imaginative but just aren't very AAA in its systems and mechanics, but it's covered in good atmosphere.
Just finished my second playthrough and I mostly liked it. It did feel a bit rushed and there was some serious jank with the movement and combat. (got stuck in geometry stuck like 5 times). I thought the mansion was really cool though. They did justice to the atmosphere.
I see this game like Frogware's The Sinking City... a janky AA horror -- with some problems -- that I still want to buy and play because I want the series to continue. Now, will I pay almost full price for the experience? No... but I also won't wait until it's rock bottom pricing either. I want to encourage AA (and indie) game development as much as possible.
I like going in blind for movies because the entry cost is low or free but when it comes to video games I like to hear a few different opinions to gauge if it's for me or not because the cost is so high these days
I absolutely loved this game. Ran thru it in 2 days, thought the length was perfect for this type of game. Combat was definitely a weak point, but the story/narrative more than made up for it. (Tho i did rent it, cant say if itd be worth full price, definitely worth grabbing on sale or renting)
I’m not a fashion guy at all, I have like 5 or 6 t shirts and Walmart blue jeans I wear on cycle. But I’ve got to say, that jacket is really nice. I’d like to get one of those.
I'm loving it so much. I am so happy they didn't go for a crazy combat heavy RE clone, which is what I think a lot of people that don't like it were looking forward to. I don't particularly like RE, but I do love this, so I guess whatever type of person I am is their target audience. And all of the nods to the OG game is pretty incredible.
@@SadTown99I think I would! I even have them, just haven't had a chance to get to them, always trying to play new games. I definitely will play them soon though. Thanks for the reminder.
If you’re into good film and actors go check out Killing Eve. Jody Comer is an amazing actress and deserves a lot more credit. She plays a straight up psychopath professional killer and is really interesting to watch. Season 1 is the best, it gets weaker as they go.
I didn't love it, but I still think some of you should check it out eventually
Definitely, I can't get enough of Resident Evil-like games

I got it, because I want to support developers that try to do the more OG survival horror titles and I dig the New Orleans backdrop. I also like the simplicity of only having 3 guns.
Praying it inspires more old horror games to get remade, here's to hoping the devs from Obscure make a remake of 1 and 2.

Yeah, something like Silent Hill 4: The Room imo. Hated at first, but lately only heard praises about it
As a horror game fan, I think this actually was a top 10 all time for me. I was engaged from beginning to end.
The Vessi sponsorship was cool to see. I remember backing them on Kickstarter a long time ago. I will check these out with your link
Im playing this game now and i am really enjoying it. It reminds me of RE 2 remake. The sound and atmosphere is some of the best that ive seen
David Harbour was also in a movie called End Watch its a pretty good movie
7 hours in and I agree 100% it’s so close but the combat mechanics miss but I love the puzzles(no googling) and lay out of the house was fun and save system was very smooth.
How do you feel about the story I haven't played the game yet but did you at least joy the story?
I’ve never seen a game with such massive contrasts in review scores
I pre-ordered digital deluxe edition days ago for Xbox. I haven't played the game yet, but im sure I will enjoy it. I like David Harbour so yea
The jazz score is a complex reference to Twin Peaks, which has the same mystical vibes.
this seems AA right? why get big actors to play the role? should have saved the money to put elsewhere... no?
I loved it actually ... as I expected because I played a similar experience like Call of Cthulhu ,Sinking city.. psychological horror is right at my alley not just jumpscares.
I'm a fan of the Alone in the dark series, so this was always on my hit list, I had a feeling it my fall short of expectations, but I'm a very forgiving gamer, so I'm still gonna give it a chance, but taking all your points on board from both videos
Things are on the walls! Looking forward to the inevitable room tour video!
Look at that Batcave finally on shape 🔥🔥 nice studio Jake 👌🏻👌🏻 where is the Metal Gear collection behind you? 👀
The office finally done ey, looks dope!! How about a tour?
New office room is lookin' good Jake. Vvvv good stuff
Just because someone likes/doesn’t like a game, doesn’t mean it will be the same for you. Just play what you want and don’t worry about everyone’s opinions. Make up your own minds.
He already said that lol
I remember playing the original Alone in the Dark on my Panasonic REAL 3DO! The REEEAAAL 3DO! I loved that game even with all the jank.
I imagine Jake purposely walking in the puddles then acting like it was nothing😂
Huge set up upgrade Jake !! looks lush
I’m definitely a horror fan that’s more forgiving. I’ve sat through a bunch of bad horror movies in the past just because I love the genre.
Let's talk about this SET! JAKE! The set is looking MINT! I can smell the leather bound books and rich mahogany through the screen!
But legit, if you were going for that Bruce Wayne sort of vibes, you NAILED it! Great job!
Your room is looking GOOD! The vibes are spot on for what I thought you’d do!
Fun factor wise, did you like this or Callisto protocol? Because I loved CP, even platinumed it
Loving your new setup, Jake! Any chance you have a gramophone to accompany that wingback chair?
"It cant just be Resident Evil... or i don't even know what else"
Silent Hill: 👀
Arriving today looking forward to actually finishing a game due to its normal length:)
love that black setting behind you! really nice!
I genuinely have had a good time with this one despite its shortcomings. I think it's well worth checking out, just not at a full $60+ right now.
Been getting that DIY down Jake? 😆Set looks great!
Oh! Your room is randomly completed! How good does it look!
Can’t wait to play it this week! Hopefully it’s just uphill from here for this franchise.
I am really enjoying it!
Great atmosphere!
Really good graphics!
And most of all its Survival Horror!!
I want to encourage AA (and indie) game development as much as possible.
looks like something i would of loved to rent at blockbuster when i was a kid
DUDE your backdrop is SICK. Good stuff.
I like going in blind for movies because the entry cost is low or free but when it comes to video games I like to hear a few different opinions to gauge if it's for me or not because the cost is so high these days
We are totally opposite. Just finished it. And i blew my mind 😂😂
Thq-Nordic is the so much potential almost there company but can’t never come true all the way
Room is looking good Jake 👍👍
I absolutely loved this game. Ran thru it in 2 days, thought the length was perfect for this type of game. Combat was definitely a weak point, but the story/narrative more than made up for it.
(Tho i did rent it, cant say if itd be worth full price, definitely worth grabbing on sale or renting)
You’ve really got that Bruce Wayne thing going on in that room! 👀
Mission accomplished! I'm glad to hear that lol thanks
@@JakeBaldino I know that’s what you were striving for! Speaking of which, do you have a favorite Batman comic run/story?
Your Bruce Wayne set up is looking great!
Never heard of it but just saw it on steam, seems interesting. Still gonna get it
New set ? Jake is really becoming the cool uncle with the even cooler rooms 👍🏻
I’m not a fashion guy at all, I have like 5 or 6 t shirts and Walmart blue jeans I wear on cycle. But I’ve got to say, that jacket is really nice. I’d like to get one of those.
Love the background aesthetic on this video
I'm loving it so much. I am so happy they didn't go for a crazy combat heavy RE clone, which is what I think a lot of people that don't like it were looking forward to. I don't particularly like RE, but I do love this, so I guess whatever type of person I am is their target audience. And all of the nods to the OG game is pretty incredible.
Sounds like you would enjoy The Evil Within 1 & 2
@@SadTown99I think I would! I even have them, just haven't had a chance to get to them, always trying to play new games. I definitely will play them soon though. Thanks for the reminder.
@@The_Chad_ Oh wow man hurry and get to them cuz you won’t be disappointed… also add “ Fear & Hunger 2: Termina “ to your list!!
Cant believe I was never subbed to you, love your gameranx videos!
thanks! glad you found me
If you’re into good film and actors go check out Killing Eve. Jody Comer is an amazing actress and deserves a lot more credit. She plays a straight up psychopath professional killer and is really interesting to watch. Season 1 is the best, it gets weaker as they go.
