      Vermeil is bar none the best color commentator we ever had for college football. Also refreshing to hear commentators willing to call out the refs.

      Arizona St. had the National Title all but in their pocket. This heartbreaking loss made the Sugar Bowl a de facto National Championship game between Florida and FSU. Florida destroyed FSU 52-20 winning its 3rd National Championship.

    The final game for one of the best college football announcer duos of the 90s- Brent Musburger and Dick Vermeil

    • @peterdoucet7974
      @peterdoucet7974 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Then Vermeil got the head coaching with the St. Louis Rams...& what did they do? Beat Tennessee Titans 23-17 in Super Bowl XXXIV, & made Vermeil the oldest head coach in NFL history to win the Super Bowl...at that time.
      And who was the QB for the Rams in that amazing game? Some grocery clerk from a small town in Iowa named...Kurt Warner.

    32:30...one of the enduring plays in the history of college football. Snake Plummer evading that ferocious Buckeye blitz, turning a sack for most college QBs in to what seemed for a moment to be a possible national championship winning touchdown (I knew Florida was beating Florida State in the Sugar Bowl). Musberger's call and Vermeil's fan like whoop as he scored...I'll never forget it. Unfortunately for people who love underdogs like myself, Joe Germaine picked the one time in his underwhelming career to actually show up in a big time moment.

    As far as I'm concerned, this was the true national championship game this year. Those were the best two teams in the country that year. This was the best Arizona State team of all time, completely hammered Nebraska. Ohio State's 1996 squad may be the best one-loss team of all time. Their best game was dismantling a dynamite Penn State team piece by piece (a Penn State team that some years would've won the national title), but had a bad half against Michigan. They shut out four teams and only allowed more than 17 points once.

    • @harryhighland591
      @harryhighland591 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If the Buckeyes had taken care of business against Michigan like they should have, this would've been the national championship game between the last two undefeated teams in college football. I would think that ASU would've been a virtual lock for the title with a win in this game. I'm an Ohio State fan but they only had themselves to blame for not winning the title in '96. They should've beaten Michigan handily and they choked.

    • @AltoonaYourPiano
      @AltoonaYourPiano 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@harryhighland591 It's honestly amazing how many times from 1988-2003 OSU choked against Michigan. Outside of 2002, the only wins against Michigan in that stretch came when the national title wasn't on the table (1994, 1998, 2001). Then in 2004, the fortunes reverse and since then it's been 15-1.

    • @harryhighland591
      @harryhighland591 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@AltoonaYourPiano To be fair not all of those losses were chokes by OSU. In some of those years, particularly early in Cooper's tenure, Michigan simply had better teams. But 1996 sticks out because the game was in the Horseshoe, Ohio State was a 17-point favorite and Michigan was only 6-4 and had just lost to a bad Purdue team. No way the Bucks should've lost that game esp given the stakes.

    Crazy watching the score, time displays from the 90s or lack-there-of. I watched an interesting video that dug into the evolution of how fans experience the tv broadcast of football and they said up until the 2000s or so you had to just know what was going on, insinuating that you were invested in the game. There's literally NO CLOCK, DOWN or YTG display at all until the downs reset-minus the end of the game. I don't remember it being this lacking in that department in 1997! My lacking memory initially disagreed with the video until a few things like this remind you. Also THIS specific year made me SUN DEVILS fan. Im from South Carolina (unfortunately) and am a true and faithful (unfortunately) a Gamecock, but ya know, being a kid you have to have a few other teams you like. And ASU was my jam with fucking Jake "the Snake" Plummer and JR Redmond. As well as the BEAST GANGSTER AS DE #94 who fucking BLOCKED the SHIT outta those damn field goals 30:25 AND and did this during the season as well . Also that Hall of Fame CFB catch 11:07. and literally almost snagged another one hander AGAIN at 18:15. FUCK OSU but Big Props to KATZ Staple LB in College Football in the late 90s and great hit at 10:40. And the late, the great, head coach of the sun devils went on to have a great comedy career including SNL the great Phil Hartman.
    ASU got robbed from that EPIC ass FG block, then pitch back by the same GANGSTER!
