Buying cheap knives. Even medium priced knives are mostly no good. You want knives that are 6mm thick at least. Even though Adam is now a greedy capitalist all things considered his knives are the best deal I know of and I speak as one designing his own knives and getting them from laser cutters. Unless that is whatt you want to do as a hobby I do not recommend this approach.

@@batzpfsaddict2806 Yeah, there’s nothing quite like sticking a knife in a tree. I think it it the sense of simplicity and accomplishment.

  • @utrak
    @utrak 3 ปีที่แล้ว +54

Most importantly: beware ricochets. Be very careful when throwing from short distance, avoid throwing at uneven targets. If you throw at a standing dead tree, you will mostly get ricochets to the sides away from you. MOSTLY. If you throw at a fallen dead tree, you can very easily get a ricochet off the upper curvature of the trunk and the knife will come straight back at'cha. I've tried this, lots of blood and a few stitches.
Safety aside, my biggest problems have been lost throwing items. I've started to add brightly colored tape and/or paint on my knives and shuriken, and I always keep a metal detector handy. The metal detector has saved the day countless times now, but the bright colors have made the detector unnecessary even more often.
I've also recently switched from dead trees to simple homemade targets. Just a wooden sidegrain board made from normal planks, so much better than trying to find the perfect dead tree in the perfect indisturbed location.

Just yesterday threw my knives at a tree from a few feet away and to my surprise it ricochet right back at me with the same force I threw it at. Hit me right in ribs but luckily it hit me with the bold side otherwise I would have punctured my lungs.😬

Only had problems with ricochet with cheap knives at close range. Never lost a knife, and I've always practiced at dead trees. It's quite obvious that you shouldn't throw those things like playing darts, but anyway.. Good tips for beginners is too always wear ample clothes cut resistant, and cheap working protective glass, and a beanie to protect your head, even in summer. This way I've never hurt myself. Never throw uphill also, THAT can be seriously dangerous, but it's quite obvious also.

Rope dart is my primary skill for ten years. And the one I've been using most is a throwing knife.
But in my years, man I have thrown everything. Silverware, chopsticks, nails, stars, spikes, screwdrivers, and all kinds of knives.
I got my whole family into knife throwing and you were the main thing I showed them for ideas.
I made many of these beginner mistakes but I will keep improving. I am getting your knives soon. And maybe someday you and I will throw together. I am also a lefty. 😊

One more hint: keep the knives in boiled linseed oil (rust protection). If you throw in the woods add a light ribbon in a neon color. It makes them much easier to find once they have embedded themselves in leaves or in the soil. Has saved me a couple of times.

Few weeks ago I made myself a set of 3 throwing knives from Ikea butcher's knives and I started practicing. Believe me, after a bit of sanding and hardening on the point, they started to stick like spears in the wood planks, also if not in the direction of the fibers. I'm having so much fun at throwing them and at building new ones from metal scratches. All this because of you, thank you so much Adam

On the point (pun) of throwing nets and back drops to retain your items when the target is missed, I've had good luck with moving pads. They're cheap, available at most hardware stores, and if you double or triple them up and drape them as a backdrop, they're dense enough to catch your items and deliver them to the ground/floor more gently, they're tough enough to take a lot of abuse. And the price is low enough that it doesn't hurt to tear them up.
The only draw back is that they can be a little small.

This video helped me a ton. My biggest mistake was definetely overthinking about the details, that you've told in your tutorials - especially the wrist ( not bending it during the release ). I was so focused about not doing it, that I overstiffened it and I can't still figure it out, how stiff is too stiff. Tell me, is throwing the knife in some ways similar to throwing for example a ball ( without bending the wrist etc. ) ?
My worst mistake is definetely the envirorment, that I live in - there's high grass everywhere, the ground for any target stand is uneven, so after 5 minutes it collapses etc. Thanks for mentioning those targets made from trunk or dead trees. I want to obtain those soon.
And lastly - thank you for everything, that you do.

What I still do often “wrong” especially in the beginning is throwing to fast take your time between the throws no one is pushing you. But on the other hand when I started to be too theoretical and to brain focused it helped me sometimes to put my throwing speed frequency up or down to get a different feel or to just get out of the often problematic over thinking process while throwing. Maybe that helps someone :)
