My God....every time I listen to this I'm taken straight back to when I first heard this. This is ethereal. Breathtaking. This is not music for the children. There are so many emotional levels to this. I can cry to it. I can go out for a jog with it on my headphones. I can make love to it. It is powerful, motivational, incredible. When kids these days talk about heavy, they think just because the guitar is downtuned and distorted that it's heavy. Well......there is nothing heavier to me than this tune. Fucking fantastic.
+Matt Garvey Agreed!!! It made me pull my car over the first time I heard it in the 80s on the radio. What is this? Who is this (my mind said)? WOW the funky mindbending wildness of the silky playing is so fabulous!
ahh, shades of 1976 or so...while going to UC Berkeley, one day I took a hit or so of acid, spent a bit of time on the north edge of campus hallucinating while watching a field of flowers...it was astounding! Across the street was STILL the best record store I've ever been in...sorry, can't give the name yet...and I bought this album sight unheard. Took it home and listened to this very song and was again astounded and still am. IMPROVE REALITY!!
One of my favorite pieces... Abercrombie plays on and off, Holland does an amazing solo and Jack... well... what else to say. It's even better in headphones.
I love how the bass works with the drums and guitar yet are all isolated, I forget that music does not have to be so harmonic all the time, and that the slight pure dissonance can be magical.
Love this track - I have been having John Abercrombie moment lately - I bought current events his 1986 lp on Cassette lol - my car has a cass player in it - lol - awesome guitarist - first heard him on college radio in the late 70s - arnd 3am long before the internet - called the radio station WREK in Atlanta ga had to know who it was! Peace - the 2 people that didnt like this need to go back to listening to kanye west or whoever.
That guitar tone is just sick, but in a really good way! And that droning bass, and the drumming that, more often than not, keeps you searching for the "one." Genius, and it feels so good. I haven't heard this one in quite some time, and stumbled upon it after listening to Orient Blue Suite by McLaughlin, de Lucia, and Di Meola.
THE BEST!! it's been fifty yrs. since I first heard it and it's like it was yesterday. The whole draw to me, is Dave Holland's fat 'woody' bass sound right off the bat. I agree with jn89015...reality is for people who can't handle drugs!
siempre me gustó Abercrombie... (A) John Abercrombie - Gateway (B) David Abercrombie or the other way round. they bear the same name: Abercrombie ...that might as well be the reason why i follow John Abercrombie: I've been following him ever since his GETAWAY album back in 1975... Abercrombie: the author of Elements of General Phonetics I always liked phonetics (even Phonology)... i always liked the sound of guitar, acoustic guitar... that's why i like both David Abercrombie and John Abercrombie
if you are here....you have excellent taste in music

I saw Gateway live back in 1994, the best live performance I've ever seen, and it still holds today after many more concerts.
One of the best guitar tones of all time. RIP John
Some of the best drumming I've ever heard. Jack really makes the sound of the song.
John was so inventive and raw. Gonna miss him big time.

RIP John, thank you tremendously for your deep contributions.
Yes! Gateway my all time favorite trio.

"de Lucia, and Di Meola"
I can't get into those guys; they just seem like they're showing off or something, compared to this guy.
I can see that.@@christopherthomas7253

jeez, this is one of the best tunes I ever heard.
I always enjoyed this mixture of folk and jazz--you can almost dance to it! Like Maja Weber's fish in that pond...
RIP John Abercrombie :-(
R.I.P. JOHN ABERCROMBIE
Wow, this is a really great tune.
RIP John
Great Great tune! RIP
The stuff Abercrombie's doing at around 2:58 to 3:12 never fails to make me actually laugh out loud with delight.
It is very large work of contemporary jazz. The album is almost god's creativity. Sounding from heaven to hell loudly!
Jack DeJohnette… if I was asked to describe his playing in one word, I would say “Ocean”. Jack’s playing sounds like the waves of the ocean.
Thanks for posting!
Pure genius
John Abercrombie (g), Dave Holland (b) and Jack DeJohnette (d) in 1975.
Really nice. Shades of the Bass Desires stuff.
maravilha completa!!!!

Does anyone know what kind of guitar Abercrombie played here? SG? Melody Maker?
It was an SG melody maker INDEED! Nels Cline talked about it in an interview. Sick tone!
