How Horse Riding Therapy Helps Children With Autism, Dyspraxia, ADHD And Other Learning Difficulties

  • You can find out more about what I do here on my website - www.hairyhenry.com
    Therapeutic Riding is the term that's used around working with horses to help children who have learning difficulties. It's not a very accurate term though, because you don't need to ride to get benefit from horses - just being around a horse can lower your heart-rate, for instance. But riding around on a well-trained horse (with a well-trained therapist!) can really benefit things like confidence, coordination and speech - and those things help all of us feel happier.
    Many thanks to Conor for helping make this video - what a star he is : - )
    And big thanks to his parents Irene and Anthony too, for allowing us to make it public.

    I've often read that the true greatness of a civilization can be measured in terms of how it's most vulnerabe citizens are treated. You folks are an amazing reminder of how practical kindNess can really help people. Thanks for your good work and helping the science of child development.

    In the beginning of the vid you let the child lead via a safety loop. That shows you have done allot of homework for your craft. Down to small details. What a blessing that you and Tim have the freedom to work the paths that you both love. And you both like allot of the same things (bonus).

    I always tell people “horses can be therapy animals too!” They look at me like I’m bizarre but you’ve proven my point wonderfully!
    I’m an animal care student and I’m doing some course work on therapy animals and I definitely wanted to include horses !
    Keep up the lovely work !!!

      Hi Sofie, Glad that our video helped you. Therapeutic riding can be great for people with cerebral palsy. Riding exercises would focus more on the physical benefits, and it can be a very effective sort of therapy - plus, the horse makes it so much more fun for the person!

    It’s so nice to see this. I’d like to extend my gratitude to Conor’s parents for allowing him to be filmed for the public’s benefit. I have a Masters in Counseling and would like to have a therapy farm once my own kids are grown. We’re homeschooling now, so time is pretty limited for homesteading and therapy work. I’d love to see some of your work with adults. I have a child with ASD, so I definitely want to work with children, but human trafficking and heroin abuse are big problems in our area, so I’d also like to work with teens and adults in recovery in these situations to assist their reintegration into society. I’d like to do skills/job training with farm chores, and other skills-based instruction as well as therapy work. I had kind of dismissed the dream, but watching your videos has me re-inspired.

    My son has Dyspraxia and Verbal Dyspraxia and he's just about to start riding with Riding for the Disabled in the UK. He's so excited! I volunteer for them and have been amazed at the transformation in childen, some with very severe disabilities, even after a few lessons. They are visibly (and sometimes audibly) less tense, their bodies loosen, become more flexible, their core strengthens and they become more able to communicate. It's a joy to work with horses, but it's even more rewarding when children with learning, neurological or physical disabilities get so much out of it. Good work!! I will show my son this video.

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right, Alison. And best of luck to your son. We always remind people that it doesn't suit everyone though. Some people tense up when they meet horses and never get over that - but it's very rare : - )

      Me too, I believe that experiential therapy is far more effective than talk therapy for children (and probably adults too), but it takes lots of repetition which makes it appear to be more expensive, and it can be harder work to move at the pace of the client. Our system seems to be more interested in making it look good rather than having it work. Keep it up you are doing something very few can do, and I know how effective it is and the kids you work with will have a far better life because of it.

    Heart warming...
    Regarding education, Montessori and Steiner were pioneers in education, linking movement and learning together. Forget about Steiner's rather silly world views and other beliefs; he was a child of his time. But education-wise, he is still top of class. Ever wondered why Steiner-educated children "can dance their name"? Or why things like "nature walk" and "circle time" are part of Steiner-based education? Or why rhythmic dancing tremendously helps developing mathematical skills?
    The knowledge of children with additional mental needs being comfortable in tight spaces is not new; my mother, as a physiotherapist, practised exactly that in an integrated kindergarden in Germany in the mid-60's, and still did until she retired. Whether she playfully stuck them in a box with weighty balls, or stuffed them tightly with lots of blankets, it always had the same beneficial effect. Ever wondered about baby carriers? They have the same effect, combining the tight tucking in with feedback of a living being (in this case usually mother or father) - in your case, you and Flora or Henry!
    It's just sad that science and education os so bloody ridden with dogma, otherwise we could have been so much farther as societies...
    Keep up the good work!

    • @rutgerw.
      @rutgerw. 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! But with attention for the needs of the individual child and by well-trained therapists otherwise such methods could do more harm than good. I myself started out at a Montessori school but that didn't work because I needed a more structured learning environment.

    • @argh02
      @argh02 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure. But then, not every education method fits every child - and that is my biggest criticism of the education system, that it uses *one* method for every child (I am generalising here), and not the method that suits the child. What's normal in engineering or science, to apply one of several methodologies depending on the context, seems so ridden with ideology and dogma...

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, it is frustrating to see that lots of things that help children learn have been discovered centuries ago, and are being re-discovered over and over, because they help children learn - without ever making it into mainstream education.

    My daughter had therapeutic horseback riding at our university when she was young. She had a naturally beautiful seat, they said. She loved riding the horses. She did mainly grooming and riding in the big indoor arena in figure eights and around posts independently, or out on a trail with the group, having someone lead the horses of the children. She would forget to "steer" the horse.We wish we could get a horse now that we have moved to some of my family's farm land, but I do not remember how to manage horses from my childhood (I used to visit other friends who had ponies and they did all the preliminaries for the riding) and also my daughter broke her tail bone sliding in the snow with my roasting pan. She loves to tell people that story about the turkey pan. So she gets sore just sitting in a chair too long, and we wonder if that would make riding horses painful....We have some milk goats now and chickens and ducks.

    • @Kirmeins
      @Kirmeins 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that could get painful. IF you consider having your daughter ride again then please get a specialist to make a saddle specifically for her anatomy and make sure it can be adjusted as she grows. Sounds funny, but women need different saddles than men because they usually sit not only on their seat bones but their pelvic too. When I think about it, this might also be her problem with normal chairs if those make her sit too straight on just her seat bones. Her tail bone might experience undue pressure because she is sitting in an unnatural position (for a female). While that has never been an issue before she hurt it, it certainly affects her now. Just a thought.

      Perhaps you can find a mentor who can help you getting set up with horses on your land? They are such wonderful creatures to have around, and horse riding can be so good for body and mind!

      Ooooh, I love the idea. It would certainly be wonderful for all of us. We might even do well with a horse and cart. I really appreciate what you do.

    Dear Sandra, thanks for those lovely videos. Your therapeutic work is amazing. It remains me a lot of my work with people and horses - may I ask where you learned about it? I finishes my education in therapeutic horse work (Heilpädagogisches Arbeiten mit Pferden, as it is called in Germany) ten years ago. As I still got my normal job as a social worker in a company I only work on the weekends with the people and the animals. It is the best work ever, to my mind.
    We live in northern Germany, between the towns of Schleswig and Flensburg (we also often struggle with the weather^^), and since last year we got a piece of land and a small farm we rebuild and renew by ourselves. Of course all our animals moved here with us such as icelandic horses, one highlandpony, two pigs, two cats, a dog and some hens which all also take part in the therapeutic work.
    Its always a pleasure to see you two working on your farm, which is really inspiring for us, especially sometimes when its getting hard ^^.
    It is so good to see you in the simplicity and normality, because it is the same with us, everything at least has to be paid and you have to find the time for everything.
    All the best from Germany,
    Lena and Tim

    I would love to see a video on what materials you used to make your therapy aids..I'm in America so I'm sure they will vary a bit but I could get ideas for my program, as I also work with children with Autism.
