The thing I like most about Wynton Marsalis is the respect he has for Louis Armstrong. He will forever hold a special place for me as does Stevie Ray Vaughn with his respect for Jimi Hendrix. Rarely do we get magnificence twice in a lifetime.
nuances are what make this so good. it's not that wynton never misses a note, it's that he hits each note perfectly. appropriate tone, volume, effects, everything. it's just amazing how every note is hit perfectly
Wynton Marsalis is not only one of the BEST trumpeters that ever picked up that axe, the guy is very smart and polished. I dig that he can not only make his horn come alive, but the Cat is still a student of the art, and a professor . So let whatever critics and haters blow into the wind; because they don’t want to cut heads with this Cat! If you can’t appreciate the Soul in his vibe, perhaps, it’s you that “aint got Soul”. Swing Man Swing!
At 1:42, that lady next to the guy in the yellow polo shirt is my great grandmother!!!!!! And off course I'm kidding, lol, but yeah, AMAZING trumpet playing by Wynton, as always!! :-)
I didn't know of him until he played with Shirley Horn -- he can really wail on that trumpet! Bravo! I knew "Satch" -- he would have been proud! I loved his triple-triple valve work!
I met him twice once at brown university the following year at the Newport Jazz Festival. He is very serious with his thinking and very intense with his playing.
Wow! I never heard of people hating or speaking bad of Wynton! I am sure there are a few, but surprised if it is more! What a Great Guy and a Great Musician! He carries a ton of knowledge and history with him!!!
i've been playin the sex machine for a long time now and a freshman just came into my high school and already knows how to do it. he's a freak. ur not alone my friend.
He views jazz as a type of classical music and thats where he is great at. He is a wonderful Classical Artist. Honestly though he is only making music to be in the eternal spotlight. He doesnt honestly have feel to music, he doesnt have a heart for music. Miles Davis, Dizzie Gillespie, and countless others have come out with at least one or more material that is extraordinary and boundary breaking that Wynton will never achieve in his life time. Something he will never have. Thats my opinion.
yes there is a waiting list and if you don't order by internet (can only do this if you already have gone through the process of testing and matching horn to player) then it can be quite some time before you get one. usually only the really really good people or people that can pay up front get in the door to monette relatively fast
@ZaneCase84 Indeed he is! I feel every middle school music class in America should begin with watching him and his friend speaking about improvising while playing music (jazz), In this case they use Happy Birthday as their Demo! Such a perfect tune to teach such a hard concept in music!
no its called circular breathing, players use it to breath in but exert air at the same time to keep the notes slurred and tied and play longer connected tunes.
Things tend to be really specialized. Lead trumpets are generally screamers and play all the loud and high section parts. It's very hard physically and they often lay out when their part is doubled by another trumpet. The best soloist is put in the "jazz" chair because that chair gets the most solos. Some composers will use the 3rd or 4th parts as the "jazz chair". Some bands will have the trumpets switch parts from song to song so a player may play 2nd on one chart and 4th on another.
What's crazy is hearing Rafael Mendez Circular breath and double tongue in moto perpetuo. Wynton slurs most of it. Which is actually a nice touch to it.
Well, he is playing the "jazz" chair. The jazz trumpet chair will naturally take more solos than the rest of the section. The same goes for the jazz bone and jazz/lead tenor chair although the lead alto does get it's fair share too. Solos are written into other parts, just not as often. Everyone gets a chance to solo eventually. It's just that some chairs get them more often.
As a (shitty) trumpet player myself, I was asked from our teacher during a jazz history class my thoughts on Wynton. I repllied, "I'm not sure if jazz lost a stellar player or if jazz education gained an incredible spokesman".
@Nobroa That is a Monette mouthpiece, a B2S3. Monette mouthpieces come in all different weights, and that one is a certain weight, although the name of it escapes me.
shop on ebay for a month or two to get a feel for a seller that you might be comfortable with buying from. and, or, yamaha is probably your best bet in that price range.
How does he make that sound at 1:06? (and several other places?) Unbelievable that he could do all this despite the fact that he is 12 days younger than I. UPSTART!

Such a fabulous performer! Rare is it that you find someone equally as acclaimed in Jazz and European Concert ('Classical') music as Wynton.
You can see how hard he's working to emulate Armstrong's sound here. Really great performance.

@AStateTrumpet I guess, lol...he's been great friends with Wynton for a long time now. He's an amazing guy...they both are! :-)
If you liked that, go buy the cd: Wynton Marsalis Potrait, he is playing the bumblebee. And the rest of the CD is also divine.
me likey!
I wanna learn to growl like that!! I might have to move to New Orleans to do it but it would be well worth it. :)
Any band with Wynton in the trumpet section has Wynton take the solos. Because he's there.
. . . plus, it's his band.
Como siente y expresa lo que esta interpretando siente la música esa es la clave para tocar mejor

1:25 he goes on the attack!
Even the back up trumpeter wasn't ready for it!
@ZaneCase84 Indeed he is! I feel every middle school music class in America should begin with watching him and his friend speaking about improvising while playing music (jazz), In this case they use Happy Birthday as their Demo! Such a perfect tune to teach such a hard concept in music!
sounds like you missed the show by a couple generations ;) What a lucky man to have seen that.
Wow! From 2:01-2:13, I don't think that I've ever heard anyone play that fast before!
no its called circular breathing, players use it to breath in but exert air at the same time to keep the notes slurred and tied and play longer connected tunes.
wynton sounds awesome...and his shape up is extra fresh...lol

@gitfiddle07 That's called circulation breathing.

How does he make that sound at 1:06? (and several other places?)
Unbelievable that he could do all this despite the fact that he is 12 days younger than I. UPSTART!

That lick at 1:14
Seneca Black (he's the white guy who plays lead) and Marcus Printup.
Jazzman you are right $300/- for a brand new mouth piece. There are many available on EBay for $100/ and even less. Check it out.
Anyone hating on Wynton is just that! A HATER!!!!
1:54 a quick round midnight
He can do that. It's called circular breathing. Listen to him play Paganni's Moto Perpetuo. That's all circular breathing.
