  • This is part one of a two part video this video will show how to find things in a koi pond. Before you learn to scrape a fish and find things on a fish it is important to be able to find things at all. Using this method you will quickly learn how to find things under the microscope so you can be sure that if you scraped a fish you did not miss anything.

    At 15 minutes & 32 seconds you say “thats a new one” “I wonder what that is?” It is a daphnia, commonly known as the water flea, & fish love to eat them, I have a tank specifically to raise daphnia for my fish.
    Love your Kio tank, awesome 👏

    I've just bought this microscope, time to finally learn, identify and treat my koi correctly and take out the guess work. Thanks for the videos.

    Adam this is a brilliant idea. Knowing how to use the 'scope was one of the most daunting things to learn about the hobby when I first got into it. Part of that was exactly what you said about not knowing what you were looking at to start with. I remember looking at a bubble with those perfect circular borders and thinking I'd discovered some new form of life ha ha. Great vid mate and really looking forward to part 2.

    11:29 cool grouping of ciliates! A lovely vorticella hanging off the 'rock' and lots of little 'Bob's ^_^
    Thanks for sharing! Love Microscopy!

    That's a daphnia, aka water flea - that "thing" that you said looked like a shrimp (at around 16 minutes). I enjoyed your video. Thanks...

      Do you know of any way to get rid of water fleas (springtails)?

    Great video! I loved those creatures in the end. I am no expert but they look like some sort of amphipoda.

    I would say the "small acorn thing" is Trichocerca rattus… Quite a common pond rotifer in the UK, but there are hundreds of species.

    Great Video. The larger critters at the end look like Daphnia.

    I think the two under your scope seem to be Daphnia. Your pond water must be good!

    also doesn't mean necessarily mean your fish have it ......It is very likely that small levels will always exist in our closed systems especially with a high fish load

    Those shrimp looking things... They aren't Daphnia to my knowledge but... I think they are Algae eater of similar level.
    An Anthropod. I think they are of Chydorus species which is a Water Shrimp of sorts.

      Thanks Helveteshit ,yes Daphnia look subtely different. I found another video of a Chydorus swimming and it looks very similar to Adams specimen thanks for the info. www.naturamediterraneo.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=120018

      I would say introducing Daphnia into a system with koi or pond is beneficial if you can. They work as fry food if you manage to raise any or similar. Plus they deal with free floating algae which can be beneficial for your system. Well, having UV on the system is bad then since it kills them. Either way, in a pond system I consider it a good thing. They do not contain diseases t my knowledge. Widely used as live feed for Aquarium hobbies that want to invoke a bit of predatory instincts in smaller fish like Neon Tetra etcetera.

    9:43 you mention costia are you saying that is costia?....the smallest black speck that's moving appears to be so....also the slightly bigger clear object appears like it might be chilodonella no?.....I have same black specks but more off them in my holding tank and am in the process of treating for costia and at the moment you can see they still show up in the microscope but appear to be dead as they are no longer moving ....I also believe I have chilodonella same as you....correct me if you have any insight ....thanks btw love your channel

    • @AdamJulyan
      @AdamJulyan  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was saying their size is similar to costia but i dont think they are costia. And the clear objects do look like chilodonella but they move differently and are smaller than chilodonella usually is. however like you say i dont know what they are so they might be an early stage of chilodonella for all i know but i find these in every fish tank i have taken a sample of so they are extremely common. they could be chilodonella and costia that have just chosen to live in the dirt rather than on fish or they could be some relative of them i dont know. There is a part 2 to the microscope video where i found trichodina but no costia or chilodonella on a fish from that same tank.
      Glad you like the videos thanks for the comment.

      Adam Julyan hey thanks for the quick reply I'm learning as well and some of these things are hard to tell exactly what they are ....I'm learning all this stuff bc me and my friend will be selling koi for the first time this year and I want to make sure that I give the customers a good healthy clean fish .......thanks for your advice your very knowledgeable ...I'll have to look into this more ....love your tanks btw!

    • @hilltopkoi6667
      @hilltopkoi6667 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      o btw would you treat your tank if you found any of these parasites in your water or would you wait until you actually see them on a fish scrape?

    • @AdamJulyan
      @AdamJulyan  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Defiantly only if you find them on a fish as it might not be something that would bother your fish. If you find it in the water then it is defiantly time to scrape a fish to see if they have it but if they dont i would not worry too much. If there are loads in the water but you cannot find any on a fish then it's just not something that will bother your fish.
