The famous folding umbrella market [Talat Rom Hup] can be accessed either by road or train itself from the first station at Wong Wian Yai (Big Circle) where at the middle is King Taksin statute (who liberated Siam from Burma and established Thonburi as a new capital of Siam). If my memory holds, it costs no more than 30 baht (80 cents) for 3rd class ticket to arrive at this Maeklong station. Wong Wian Yai is about 5 km from Memorial Bridge, the first bridge built across Chao Phraya river about 100 years ago during King Rama VII. At the foot of this bridge is King Rama I statue (who succeeded King Taksin and moved Siam capital from Thonburi side of Chao Phraya River to Bangkok). Parallel to this bridge, there is another bridge Phra Pok Klao (King Rama VII) Bridge and at the center is 2-meter wide Skywalk Garden which is for people who enjoy walking/sitting/drinking Thai beer while watching sunset at Chao Phraya river. Highly recommended.
Having been to Bangkok twice, I would still like to see ICONSiam - it was being built when I went there a while ago. I have visited Wat Pho, Chinatown and Mahanakhon Tower.
Excelente.
The Sanctuary of Truth was also featured in the blockbuster movie The Creator.🎬📽 In the scene where the hero meets Maya who has become Sleeping Beauty.
Chinatown (Yaowarat) is just overwhelming. It reminds me always of the big markets like in Teheran, Cairo or Tunis, just in Chinese. I think even you ca not find something similiar in China itself.
Hi, thinking of visiting the skywalk, is it easily accessible as have a baby stroller, are there many steps or does that small escalator take you up please. Thanks
The elevators and escalators take you all the way upto the top floors for the viewing but I remember there only being stairs for the last 2 floors up to the roof/skywalk. Please check on their website but I don't remember there being an elevator to the roof.
Wat Pho is an old temple south of the Grand Palace. It is also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha rebuilt by King Rama III in 1832. The King also decreed that traditional Thai massage and traditional medicine be inscribed on stone tablets to disseminate the knowledge to the general public. The famous Thai spa and massage are believed to originate from such stone inscription. King Rama III was also known as Merchant Prince because when he was still a prince he conducted trade with China and asked the ship captain to bring back stone sculptures such as Chinese deities, mythical beasts as stabilizing balance in the ship's belly. These stone sculptures are now commonly seen at Wat Pho, Wat Arun and the Grand Palace. When President Obama had only one day to tour a Thai temple, US Embassy recommended this temple due to its unique architecture, history and beautiful reclining Buddha. Note all three famous temples: Wat Phra Kaew in the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun, there are two Yaksa (Hindu/Buddhist giant deity) Guardians at the entrance of the temple.
