Angel Genchev a.k.a. The Pepper was a real pioneer in what he did. If my memory doesn't lie to me ... This is the only athlete in the story, who has been a four -time world and four- time european adolescent champion. Even Sergei Bubka has not achieved... Of course, all this would not have happened if it weren't for Ivan Abadzhiev (Goat) coaching. He himself says that the Pope is the greatest coach of all time in all sports, since he is the first to conclude that an athlete should train only what he does in a race. And before Ivan Abadzhiev, the weightlifters played Ferbal and pushed and threw away in just 1-2 hours. Unfortunately, Russia and the United States hit us firmly during the 1988 Olympic Games, because Bulgaria became the third power in the world, and our weightlifters (Neno Terziyski, Ivan Chakarov, Stefan Botev, Asen Zlatev, etc.) would have they take the gold medals and the USSR would be beaten by them. In fact, Genchev caught him with Flurosemide and he ended his career early ...

One of the best ever. I had a coffee with him a couple of years ago. Great athlete indeed. Shared lots of stories of him and his teammates and coach, the great Ivan Abadzhiev. The heaviest man to ever cnj 3x body weight (202.5 at 67.5kg). The bulgarian team was sabotaged in the 1988 Olympics at Seoul due to the total domination in almost every category.

Russian intrigues and black propaganda ruined their career unfortunatelly.

Great athlete. With hard fate. Нe is not of my generation. I often remember Dobrev, Cholakov, Damianov, Sedov who died young, could not realize themselves in everyday life

What was he in prison for? Imagine the pressure of getting out to lift knowing you have this one chance before you got to go back in again. I think Boevski also served a long prison term.

For racketering accusations, brawling with cops swearing to judges at court and etc. That was tragic parts of his life.

To this day still exist the theory that in Seoul 88 the bulgarian team was boycotted by the almighty Soviet Union..Mr Guenchev and Grablev were the real victims of this situation..😐😐
