I love this vlog! Im a middle school student aspiring to go to Stuyvesant because of the mathematics and science. I really have a passion for computer science and chemistry, and maths so happens to be a strong suit of mine that makes me happy. Thank you for sharing your experiences as a student at Stuy :)

hii sorry for the late response. the difficulty of the test depends on your skill level and test taking abilities. prep schools and practice tests tend to be a little harder than the actual test, but it's still good to prepare yourself for more difficult questions. good luck on the exam!
I have a few questions for the SHSAT since Im taking it in a few months: 1. What scores should I be getting before I take the test? What SHSAT score calculator should I use since I feel like some are different than others. 2. What are some tips to get better at the reading section? 3. What is your overall opinion on Stuyvesant? 4. How much should I be studying ever day?
hi! sorry for the late reply. im afraid i can't answer these questions too well bc i don't remember the scoring system, but i'll try my best 1. not sure what score you need but try your best :) i'd ask someone official or look at an official site to see what calculators are allowed 2. some people say to skim the questions so you know what to look for, and then go back and skim the passage instead of actually reading, but then some people say don't do that so idk. up to you. some other general test taking strategies are read the question carefully, use process of elimination, skip and come back if u are unsure, and trust your gut (i.e. if you were really torn btwn two answers, picked one, and then start doubting yourself, unless you find a genuinely better reason to pick the other one, just keep what you picked) 3. my overall opinion on stuy is it was hard. i'm glad i went there because it made me who i am today, allowed me to make good friends, etc. it's nice being able to say i graduated from stuy and it's an accomplishment i'm proud of. when i was at stuy and after i graduated, i thought it was worth it. however, i'm starting my second year of college now and i'm not sure if the stress was worth the name because where you go to high school doesn't really matter in the end. i wasn't sleeping properly and got stressed and didn't have a good work/life balance. but then again, stuy had a lot of educational opportunities and pushing myself there made college easier, so there's pros and cons to it, like with anything. it will be a lot of hard work, but it can also be rewarding. its up to u to decide what's worth doing for you, which i know can seem daunting but you'll figure it out eventually :) 4. how much u shld study depends on your needs. i'm assuming you mean studying for the shsat? i can't give u an exact hours per day, because i didn't study like that. i just took practice tests until i was content with how i was scoring and when the test came. if you really want an estimate, maybe study 3 hours a week? if you're not happy with your scores then study a lil more.
I love this vlog! Im in 7th grade right now and my dream highschool is Stuyvesant! I just have a few questions for you that I hope you can answer: -How hard was the SHSAT and did you get prep? -Is the school really 'academic trauma'? -Does it specialize in biology classes and things like college credits? -Do the teachers accept late assignments at certain times? -Do you guys get field trips or school parties/assemblies/celebrations at times? Its alot of questions but I hope you can answer them
hii thank you for watching :)) to answer your questions: to prep for the shsat, i self studied by doing practice questions and tests in a test prep book. the test wasn’t bad imo (but also i don’t really remember since i took it years ago). i found math relatively easy, and english was slightly more tricky/difficult. be sure to read everything carefully. “academic trauma” 😅😅 yes stuy is challenging and the workload is difficult, especially if you take a lot of ap classes. looking back i’m like “oh it wasnt thatttt bad,” but when i reread my journal entries from junior year, every day was about how i was getting 4 hours of sleep and how much work i had and how tired i was. be prepared to work hard, and hopefully you’re able to find a motivator. definitely reach out to teachers and your guidance counselor if you’re going through a hard time and need help. stuy has multiple biology electives and AP bio. stuy has a lot of other AP courses and interesting electives for each department too. for late assignments, it depends on the teacher but most do accept late work. i think the english department allows you to have a one week extension on any assignment, once a semester, but be sure to check your teacher’s policies each semester. field trips are up to teachers. they don’t happen very often-i think i only went on one and it was during freshman year. when you go on a trip, you need permission from all your other teachers, plus they take a lot of planning, so that’s probably why teachers don’t have class trips often. there’s no assemblies, and no senior trip or homecoming dances, which are two things i would’ve wanted :(( but i guess no trip is because of how many students there are. the main dances are jprom (juniors) and prom (seniors) but other events have been held for underclassmen. additionally, some clubs will host dinners/celebrations, often a cultural club celebrating a cultural holiday, but anyone can attend. good luck on the shsat!! you’ve still got time to prepare so don’t worry too much and you can do great things in the future, regardless of whatever happens 😊😊
@@emily.o Thank you so much for taking your time to answer these questions! And I do want to go to stuyvesant and I hope I can get admitted. Thanks for the affirmation aswell!
hey, so unfortunately if you don't put stuy first, you cannot get in, even if your score is high enough. this isn't a mistake necessarily though, because everything happens for a reason and you can do great things wherever you go. don't worry about the things you can't change in the past, and try to keep moving forward :) best of luck wherever you go!!
hey, congratulations to your friends!! looking back i’ll say “it’s not that bad” but during my time at stuy i was definitely stressed and not sleeping properly. workload depends on your teachers and courses ofc, but i’d say maybe 3 hours if you manage your time efficiently, but realistically 5ish hours including breaks, distractions, etc. when i was a student, the hw policy was max .5 hours of hw a night for regular classes, and max 1 hour of hw a night for ap classes. not sure if that’s still the policy. tbh some teachers assigned more than they were supposed to, but some teachers wouldn’t assign hw that often, so i guess it balances out. hope this helps!!
Do you know anyone who got in through the 9th-grade SHSAT? Also, did you have preparation for the SHSAT? If so, do you think it's a must? Additionally, do you have any tips for the SHSAT?
don’t know anyone personally, but there were definitely a few students. i prepped by doing a few practice tests. the amount of practice necessary is dependent on your skill level, but i would definitely suggest doing a couple practice tests to get used to the pacing and type of questions. that’s gotta be my main shsat tip. it’s all about seeing what you got wrong and practicing those types of questions, and that also applies to studying for tests in general. general test taking tips: - sleep, eat, properly hydrate, etc. - skip questions you don’t know and come back to them - answer all questions, even just a guess, if there is no penalty for wrong answers - use process of elimination hope this helps! good luck on the exam if you plan on taking it :)
Hey Emily! I’m taking the SHSAT in a few months and I am really nervous. Here are some questions I hope you can answer for me :) Did you pass Stuy’s cut off score by a lot and got in? If you can still remember from test day, what are some tips for the SHSAT exam? How much did you sleep as a freshman? (Average per day) Is Stuyvesant really that prestige just like the hype it receives? Tysm for your vids! My dream school is stuy and I hope I get in!!
Hey! - I passed the cut off score by 30ish points and got in (not sure what the cut off score was for my year, so I'm just estimating). - Day of the test tips? The day before, don't do any test prep and just try to relax. Make sure you get a good night of sleep and eat breakfast. I think you're allowed to chew gum, so I did that during the test, but check with your proctor. - I got maybe 6 hours of sleep per night as a freshman. - Stuyvesant is one of the best high schools in NYC and the name is well known, so yes I would say it's prestigious. There are a lot of course and extracurricular opportunities there that aren't available in other places. However, you don't need to go to Stuy to get a good education, and to be honest, going to Stuy will actually make it harder to get into a prestigious college if that's your goal. So many kids at Stuy are competing for spots in those schools, and there's so many qualified applicants, but a college can't take so many kids from just one place. Thanks for watching! Good luck on the SHSAT and remember that you'll do great wherever you go :))

At that school ur going to is it worth going to like are the academics really good and my mom says it’s a lot of pressure so I shouldn’t try to go but what are ur thoughts
if you’re interested in stuy at all, i’d say rank it first on the shsat and if you do get in, you can always choose to not go. you don’t wanna regret getting a high enough score but not putting stuy first (you can only get in if you rank it first) there is definitely academic pressure but it’s bearable imo. the competitiveness can be good bc it pushes you to try harder. nobody’s gonna randomly ask you to compare grades and start bragging about their achievements. whether or not you compare grades depends on your friends and what you’re comfy with. with things like taking aps and getting into college, i’ve definitely felt like damn i’m not doing enough, but it all depends on how much work you’re willing to do. the kids who took a bunch of ap classes and kept their averages high and got into prestigious schools also worked super hard for it. stuy’s academics are rly good. it’s what the school is known for. there’s lots of ap classes to choose from and even the reg classes are challenging/rigorous. also the extracurriculars are good like theres a lot of sports teams and hundreds of clubs you can join. there’s j a lot of options which is nice. also theres p good mental health support systems and tutoring if you need it. most teachers are happy to help you and work with you and most students are friendly imo i hope this helps :)
everyone has gym every other day, and when you don’t have gym you either have a free period or an extra period of science (gym and science periods are usually back to back)
there are 10 periods a day, and you need at least 6 classes + gym, which counts as half a class bc it is every other day. So if you take the minimum number of classes (6.5), you’ll have 3-4 frees per day, including lunch. if you take more electives, you’ll have fewer frees, but everyone has a mandatory lunch period
public! nyc has 9 specialized high schools and for 8 of them, including this school, your admission is based on a standardized test called the specialized high schools admissions test (shsat)
unfortunately it is kind of true. i liked to think and teachers liked to say that if you had good time management, you could get sleep. i guess i didn't have good enough time management then, because i rarely slept more than 6 hours on a school night. the only people who i knew that got sleep weren't very involved in extracurriculars, but i stayed late at school almost every day, so i'd say that impacts how much sleep you get.
@@巴啦啦能量-x4x no worries! school is 8:00 am - 3:35 pm each day, although if you have 10th, or 9th and 10th period free, you can leave early. english and history homework are often reading based, other classes not so much.
hellooo, thank you! what does "good people" mean to you? stuy kids can be a bit competitive, but everyone's different. i did make good friends while i was there. you'll find your people because the school is so big and has a lot of interest based clubs/ways to meet people :) congrats on getting in and good luck with school!

if you’re interested in stuy at all, i’d say rank it first on the shsat and if you do get in, you can always choose to not go. you don’t wanna regret getting a high enough score but not putting stuy first (you can only get in if you rank it first)
there is definitely academic pressure but it’s bearable imo. the competitiveness can be good bc it pushes you to try harder. nobody’s gonna randomly ask you to compare grades and start bragging about their achievements. whether or not you compare grades depends on your friends and what you’re comfy with. with things like taking aps and getting into college, i’ve definitely felt like damn i’m not doing enough, but it all depends on how much work you’re willing to do. the kids who took a bunch of ap classes and kept their averages high and got into prestigious schools also worked super hard for it.
stuy’s academics are rly good. it’s what the school is known for. there’s lots of ap classes to choose from and even the reg classes are challenging/rigorous. also the extracurriculars are good like theres a lot of sports teams and hundreds of clubs you can join. there’s j a lot of options which is nice. also theres p good mental health support systems and tutoring if you need it. most teachers are happy to help you and work with you and most students are friendly imo
i hope this helps :)
@@emily.o As an incoming freshman, thank you!
@@anchineliu7355 no problem! good luck in the fall :))
Is the gym free for anyone who wants to go? Or is that a class?
everyone has gym every other day, and when you don’t have gym you either have a free period or an extra period of science (gym and science periods are usually back to back)
Can anyone who studies at this school provide information?
how many free periods are there in your school?
there are 10 periods a day, and you need at least 6 classes + gym, which counts as half a class bc it is every other day. So if you take the minimum number of classes (6.5), you’ll have 3-4 frees per day, including lunch. if you take more electives, you’ll have fewer frees, but everyone has a mandatory lunch period
Is that a public or a private highschool?
public! nyc has 9 specialized high schools and for 8 of them, including this school, your admission is based on a standardized test called the specialized high schools admissions test (shsat)
Oh I see, thanks for the answer bud :)

Is the last part of the video true? He says that no one can sleep more than six hours at night.
unfortunately it is kind of true. i liked to think and teachers liked to say that if you had good time management, you could get sleep. i guess i didn't have good enough time management then, because i rarely slept more than 6 hours on a school night. the only people who i knew that got sleep weren't very involved in extracurriculars, but i stayed late at school almost every day, so i'd say that impacts how much sleep you get.
@@emily.o I'm sorry, I still have some questions for you. What time does school end every day? Is the homework usually reading-based?
@@巴啦啦能量-x4x no worries! school is 8:00 am - 3:35 pm each day, although if you have 10th, or 9th and 10th period free, you can leave early. english and history homework are often reading based, other classes not so much.
does this school offer any scholarships or aids for students?
it is a free public school!

Are there any Indian students in your school!?
yup! about 70% of the school is asian and 20-30% of those students are south asian
Well..well..well I’m Asian too
Hi I’m a upcoming stuy student and I’m wondering r the ppl good there? Also ur so pretty
hellooo, thank you! what does "good people" mean to you? stuy kids can be a bit competitive, but everyone's different. i did make good friends while i was there. you'll find your people because the school is so big and has a lot of interest based clubs/ways to meet people :) congrats on getting in and good luck with school!
