the version most faithful to the book by far. The solarization effects are dated and distracting but the rest is right from the book. The Langella version I saw in cinema and it seemed a return to Hammer Horror for me, good but I also saw the play version Langella rose to stardom with and REALLY loved it because it was a more humorous take.
Actually watched this on the night before Halloween last week. Loved it. I've loved Frank Langella since I was a kid after seeing his portrayal of Skeletor in the Masters of the Universe movie. He makes an awesome Dracula! I can't say it's my favorite Dracula adaptation, though. It's more a modern adaptation of the stage play and it has more in common with the Lugosi film than it does with the novel. It's definitely better than the Lugosi film, but to this day, despite all of the flair and additions, "Bram Stoker's Dracula is my favorite adaptation because it's the closest a film has gotten to the novel.
I saw the title of the video, and we were gonna fight! lol But, to my surprise and joy, you made the right call. A lot of people have never heard of the Langella version, which is sad, because he IS Dracula, and the movie is so beautifully produced. Bravo Cole. Happy Halloween.
I'll have to check it out. I'm not a big horror fan. like yourself, I enjoy the classics but as far as modern horror movies go, the only ones I'm interested in are vampire themed. Possibly because Dracula is based on, or rather... his lore is attached to a real person that existed. Also, he's the most complex- well above any wolfman, mummy, zombie, slasher or sadistic psycho. I recently watched a couple videos- one ranking all the Dracula films, and another ranking all the depictions of Dracula's brides titled "Which ones would turn me the fastest?" haha I'd like to rank them myself based on faithfulness to the novel except I never read it. Haven't done much reading since college. I have a nice leather bound copy on the shelf looking impressive, right between Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Alice Cooper: Golf Monster. =D There's several other classics that "...I'll get to one day!" In the words of Nate Bargatze - "I'm not smart. I don't read ANY books, and I think that matters! Reading, I believe, is the key to smart. That's what I've always said!". =D

(Paraphrase) "Even though they show him being shot at the beginning... it made more sense to me that his wife was just not talking to him for an entire year, rather than him being dead the whole time. Yeah- i know what THAT guy's going through. I've been THERE! "
