I worked at a steel mill and was a crane operator on a 100 ton P&H gantry crane that could be operated by remote control. Everyday, my crane operation report said "brakes don't work." Well, one day the remote battery died. And you could hear the "clunk" of the brakes actuating when the remote battery died, but the crane didn't slow a bit. It was going at 5 points when that happened. By the time it reached the end of the building, it hadn't slowed down hardly any. It hit the stops and ripped them off (luckily, there was another building that ran behind it and was butted up against it and kept it from leaving the building) and all hell broke loose. It ended up sitting askew on the rails, with only 4 of the 8 wheels in contact with the rail. I got the attention of the roller on the line when it happened and he got on the speaker and informed other down the line and they were all running like Godzilla was on the loose. KER-BLAM!!! Instantly, I got blamed, until I showed the big boss a couple months of crane reports. It damn near came off the tracks.
Spring act as counter force to thruster movement. When thruster is activated spring compresses. When thruster released spring act its compression force on thruster and it helps thruster goes down quickly. If you adjust spring means you are indirectly setting thruster to close fast. Once thruster is closed spring duty is over. Then thruster uses its own dead weight to bind brake shoes around brake drum.
It honestly doesnt look right to me, it should be adjusted by the nut on the right hand side of the tie bar to compensate for wear. Those springs should be factory set to provide a specific load of braking torque. Its not clear to me why they are adjusting them unless someone has already messed about with them.
you can consider using a electromagnetic brake for EOT crane. safe and easy to install. no adjustment required.

It blows my mind how some boses seem to ignore what their maintenance guys tell them, or worst still let blatantly incompetent people work on them.

Should it not be factory set though?
The thruster speed is adjusted by the oil flow valve is itnot?
Why brake shoe burn or smoke release during operation
Its too tight if its doing that.
